The Capricornian Home Buildings and Contents policy is a sum-insured policy: you choose a building sum insured, a contents sum insured, or both. Its current product page offers Standard and Plus options, but the public information does not establish whether the policy is cheap or good value. The Capricornian distributes the policy; Insurance Australia Limited issues it under the CGU brand. Your quote, policy documents and certificate are essential to judging whether it suits your home.

Who provides the policy, and what does “review” mean here?

The Capricornian’s product page describes the cover and its options, while Insurance Australia Limited (ABN 11 000 016 722, AFSL 227681) is identified as the issuer under the CGU brand. Those roles matter: the product-page descriptions are summaries, not the insurance contract. The official Key Facts Sheets, prepared on 24 February 2025, also say they are guides and direct customers to the PDS for full terms. The current full PDS was not available for verification here, so exact current exclusions, claim-settlement rules, excesses and pricing factors should be checked in the current PDS and your certificate before buying. The Capricornian’s home insurance page and CGU’s home insurance information are starting points.

This is a review of the public product information, not a claims test or endorsement. CHOICE classifies the policy as sum-insured and says its public profile is scored on cover because the insurer does not share price data. Its numerical ratings and recommendation fields are available to members, so public information does not support calling the policy cheap, expensive, best-value or a CHOICE recommendation. CHOICE’s public profile can help identify questions to check, but its listed details should be confirmed against current policy documents.

What Standard and Plus offer

The Capricornian advertises both building and contents cover as separate or combined choices. The table summarizes the distinctions on its current product page; benefits remain subject to the PDS, selected cover and policy conditions.

Temporary accommodation after a covered event Up to 12 months Up to two years
Building safety net above the selected building sum insured No additional 25% safety net advertised Advertised 25% safety net
Contents accidental damage Optional Included automatically
Contents motor burnout Optional Included automatically
Contents food spoilage Up to $500 Up to $2,000
Landscaping replacement Up to $1,500 Up to $3,000

Temporary accommodation durations, the building safety net and the other limits are advertised summaries, not a promise that the full amount applies in every claim. Check the current PDS and certificate for triggers, caps, excesses and conditions. The landscaping limits come from the official Building Key Facts Sheet dated 24 February 2025. The current product page and Building Key Facts Sheet contain the published descriptions.

What events are described as covered?

The current product page lists fire, including bushfire; theft and vandalism; flood and rainwater run-off; storm; storm surge; and tsunami. A listed event is not a guarantee of payment: the policy’s event definitions, exclusions, waiting periods, excesses and claim conditions determine whether a particular loss qualifies. The page specifically excludes action of the sea, such as tides and waves. CHOICE’s public profile reports a 14-day flood waiting period, but because the current full PDS was not verified, confirm whether that waiting period and any relevant restrictions apply to the cover you are quoted.

For contents, CHOICE also flags restrictions concerning water escaping from shower recesses or bases, and limits for valuables and portable contents. Treat these as points to verify in the current PDS rather than as a complete statement of the policy. Don’t decide whether a particular flood, storm or water escape is covered from the event label alone.

How much cover should you choose?

Buildings: estimate the cost to rebuild

Your building sum insured is the amount you select for the insured building. It is not automatically the market value or sale price of the property. If the selected amount is below the cost of rebuilding after a loss, you may face an underinsurance gap. The Plus option’s advertised 25% safety net may provide an additional buffer in eligible circumstances, but it should not replace a realistic rebuilding estimate or a check of the PDS conditions. The Capricornian says its calculator is a guide and that customers remain responsible for choosing sufficient cover.

Contents: value replacement, not resale

The official contents Key Facts Sheet advises valuing possessions by what it would cost to replace them. Make an inventory and account for ordinary household items as well as high-value belongings; the general-contents limit for some categories may be much lower than their combined replacement value. Contents cover that is too low can leave you underinsured.

Valuable and portable items need separate attention

The product page says general contents has a combined $2,500 limit for works of art, collections, jewellery and watches unless valuable contents cover is selected. Optional portable contents is described as covering specified items outside the home, normally up to $10,000 per item unless separately listed for a higher amount. Geographic and item-use exclusions apply. If you are storing contents, the page says you may need to notify the insurer in advance and obtain acceptance; valuable contents are not covered while stored. Check current wording and obtain confirmation for the specific items and storage arrangements.

What other limits and benefits should you check?

  • Liability: the product page advertises legal liability up to $20 million, subject to terms and limits. It describes building liability as applying to incidents at home and contents liability as potentially applying away from home within Australia.
  • Visitor belongings: combined cover advertises protection up to $2,500, subject to policy conditions.
  • Emergency repairs: the page describes emergency-repair cover, with the applicable conditions and limits to be confirmed in the current PDS.
  • Motor burnout: the page describes cover for motors up to 15 years old if they are not under warranty or used in a business. Check the current wording for eligibility.
  • Excesses: the official contents Key Facts Sheet warns that more than one excess may apply. Confirm the excess for the event you are most concerned about, not only the standard excess.
  • Cooling-off: the 2025 contents Key Facts Sheet states a 21-day cooling-off period if no claim has been made during that time. Confirm the applicable terms in current documents.

The Key Facts Sheets are summaries, not substitutes for the PDS and certificate. See the Contents Key Facts Sheet and Building Key Facts Sheet.

How to compare a quote with another policy

  1. Check the sums insured. Compare the building rebuilding amount and contents replacement amount, not just the premium. Note whether a safety net applies and how it is triggered.
  2. Compare the event wording. Review definitions, waiting periods, exclusions and excesses for flood, storm, water escape and other risks relevant to your property.
  3. Compare limits and options. Include valuable and portable contents, accidental damage, motor burnout, temporary accommodation and other benefits you may need.
  4. Read the excess structure. Check for multiple or event-specific excesses and consider what you would have to pay when making a claim.
  5. Get address-specific premiums. Request quotes using comparable sums insured and options. Public information does not provide a reliable basis for ranking this policy’s price.
  6. Read the documents before deciding. Check the current PDS, certificate and applicable guides for the exact cover offered to your address.

Is the policy worth considering?

It may be worth including in a comparison if you want a sum-insured home policy with Standard and Plus choices and the advertised options fit your needs. The public summaries reveal meaningful differences—especially the Plus building safety net, longer advertised temporary-accommodation period, and included accidental-damage and motor-burnout benefits for contents. But they do not establish the policy’s price competitiveness or settle whether a particular loss is covered. A sound decision depends on your address-specific quote, chosen limits and excesses, and the current contract wording.
