Use BitChord’s separate quality ceilings to match the network you are on: set HIGH for Wi‑Fi in most cases, select LOSSLESS on Wi‑Fi only when your source and complete audio path support it, and set LOW for mobile data when preserving your allowance matters. BitChord’s official product information says these independent ceilings keep playback from fighting your data plan.

Quality is also limited by the output device. A lossless request can produce a genuinely lossless stream only when the connected output is lossless-capable; BitChord’s Stats for nerds overlay lets you check the codec, bitrate, bit depth and sample rate that are actually being decoded.

What the BitChord quality ceilings control

BitChord treats LOSSLESS, HIGH and LOW as request ceilings rather than guarantees that every track will use one exact format. The app asks the available source or addon for the best rendition within the ceiling you selected, then resolves playback through the output path your device can use.

  • LOSSLESS requests a bit-exact rendition when the source and output chain can support it.
  • HIGH requests the best lossy rendition available, commonly near 320 kbps.
  • LOW requests a metered rendition, commonly 128 kbps or below, for situations where data conservation is more important than maximum fidelity.

The terms describe the target quality, not a fixed data rate. A track may have no lossless source, and an output device may prevent a lossless stream from reaching the listener even when LOSSLESS is selected.

Recommended Wi‑Fi and mobile-data settings

Network Recommended ceiling Use this when Main trade-off
Wi‑Fi HIGH You want a clear default that improves fidelity without requiring a lossless-capable setup. Uses more data than LOW, but avoids the larger streams associated with lossless renditions.
Wi‑Fi LOSSLESS Your source, wired connection or qualifying Bluetooth codec, and listening equipment can carry lossless audio. Renditions are larger and may consume substantially more data than lossy playback.
Mobile data LOW You are conserving a metered allowance, roaming, or streaming where coverage is inconsistent. Lower fidelity than HIGH or LOSSLESS.
Mobile data HIGH You have sufficient allowance and prefer better fidelity while away from Wi‑Fi. Higher consumption than LOW; the exact amount varies by stream and playback conditions.
Mobile data LOSSLESS You deliberately accept the largest data demand and have a lossless-capable output path. Usually the least suitable choice for a capped plan because lossless renditions are larger.

There is no authoritative universal MB-per-hour figure for BitChord’s tiers. Actual use depends on the rendition supplied, codec, bitrate, buffering and listening time, so a single number would be misleading.

How to change the ceilings in BitChord

Exact Android screen names can vary by BitChord release. The public documentation establishes the separate Wi‑Fi and mobile-data controls, but not one universal tap-by-tap path. Look for the playback or audio-quality area in BitChord’s settings and change each network ceiling independently.

  1. Open BitChord and enter its Settings.
  2. Open the section labelled for playback, streaming, audio quality or a similar function.
  3. Find the two network-specific controls: one for Wi‑Fi quality and one for mobile-data quality.
  4. Set the Wi‑Fi ceiling to HIGH. Choose LOSSLESS instead only after confirming that your source and output path can use it.
  5. Set the mobile-data ceiling to LOW if conserving data is your priority. Select HIGH only when the extra consumption is acceptable.
  6. Save or apply the changes, then start a track and inspect Stats for nerds to confirm what BitChord decoded.

If your release combines these controls under a single quality menu, update the network-specific values wherever the app exposes them rather than assuming one global setting applies to both connections.

Choosing between LOSSLESS, HIGH and LOW

LOSSLESS: maximum source fidelity when the path qualifies

LOSSLESS is a request for a bit-exact stream. It is meaningful only when the source provides a lossless rendition and every relevant stage can carry it. Larger renditions can increase network use and buffering requirements, so LOSSLESS is best reserved for Wi‑Fi or a generous data plan unless you have a specific reason to use it on cellular.

A lossless label in a source URL is not enough. BitChord’s addon guide states that the app verifies quality using the codec it actually decodes. If decoding ends up lossy, BitChord does not turn that stream into a lossless result merely because the URL or metadata used the word lossless.

HIGH: the practical everyday setting

HIGH asks for the best lossy rendition available and is commonly near 320 kbps. It is the sensible Wi‑Fi default for listeners who want stronger fidelity without requiring special hardware. It also suits mobile playback when you have enough allowance and LOW sounds too constrained.

LOW: the metered-data setting

LOW is designed for constrained connections. It commonly requests 128 kbps or below, reducing the amount of audio data transferred compared with HIGH or LOSSLESS. Use it for commuting, roaming, shared plans or any situation where avoiding unexpected consumption matters more than maximum detail.

Why your output hardware determines whether LOSSLESS is possible

BitChord evaluates the complete output route, not just the selected ceiling. The official addon documentation identifies these outputs as qualifying for lossless playback:

  • 3.5 mm headphones or headsets
  • USB-C audio connections
  • USB digital-to-analogue converters (USB DACs)
  • Line-out or auxiliary connections
  • HDMI, ARC or eARC
  • Docks
  • Bluetooth using LDAC, LHDC or aptX Lossless

It identifies these as non-qualifying for lossless output:

  • SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD and aptX Adaptive Bluetooth codecs
  • Bluetooth LE Audio using LC3
  • Opus output
  • Hearing aids
  • Phone speakers
  • Casting routes

Non-qualifying does not mean playback will fail. It means the route cannot preserve a lossless signal end to end. HIGH or LOW still work normally, and BitChord can select a suitable next source when a lossless-specific addon is not appropriate.

Using a USB-C DAC with a phone

A USB-C DAC dongle paired with wired headphones is a practical way to create a lossless-capable phone output when the phone supports USB-C audio. The dongle is an enabler for lossless playback, not a requirement for ordinary HIGH or LOW streaming. Check that the phone, dongle and headphones are connected before testing; otherwise BitChord may evaluate the phone speaker or another active route.

What the lossless-output gate does

Some addons use the parameter checkValidLossless=1. With that gate enabled, BitChord contacts the addon only when the connected output is considered lossless-capable. On a phone speaker or a lossy Bluetooth codec, the addon is skipped and resolution moves to the next source.

This behavior prevents BitChord from spending effort fetching a lossless rendition that the active output would immediately compress or discard. It also explains why changing from phone speakers to wired USB-C audio can change the source selected for the same track while the in-app quality ceiling remains unchanged.

Verify the stream instead of trusting the label

Open BitChord’s Stats for nerds overlay during playback. The overlay exposes the fields that matter for judging the active stream:

  • Codec: identifies the format BitChord is actually decoding.
  • Bitrate: indicates the stream’s encoded data rate.
  • Bit depth: shows the resolution of the decoded audio where reported.
  • Sample rate: shows the number of samples per second being decoded.

Use these fields together. A high bitrate alone does not prove lossless playback, and a lossless-looking source label cannot override a lossy codec in the active route. BitChord’s verification is based on the codec it decodes, which is why the overlay is more useful than a filename or URL suffix.

A simple verification checklist

  1. Connect the intended output device before starting playback.
  2. Confirm that the device is one of the lossless-capable routes if you selected LOSSLESS.
  3. Start the track and open Stats for nerds.
  4. Record the codec, bitrate, bit depth and sample rate shown for the active playback.
  5. Repeat the check after switching from Wi‑Fi to mobile data if you use different ceilings, because the selected network profile can request a different rendition.

Managing data use without sacrificing more quality than necessary

BitChord’s separate ceilings let you make a network-specific compromise instead of lowering every stream. Keep HIGH on Wi‑Fi when that is your normal listening environment, and reserve LOW for mobile data. If your plan is generous and your output is qualifying, LOSSLESS can be limited to Wi‑Fi so large renditions do not consume cellular allowance.

Because no fixed MB-per-hour table is published for BitChord’s tiers, manage consumption using your device’s network-usage tools and your carrier’s allowance meter. Compare usage over the same listening period rather than applying a universal estimate. Different tracks and source renditions can produce different totals even under the same ceiling.

  • Use LOW before travelling or entering a roaming area.
  • Return to HIGH on an unmetered Wi‑Fi network when you want better fidelity.
  • Use LOSSLESS only when the source and output path justify its larger transfer.
  • Check system-level data usage after a representative listening session to see how your own library behaves.

Common problems and fixes

LOSSLESS is selected but Stats for nerds shows a lossy codec

Check the active output first. Phone speakers, casting and codecs such as SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive or LC3 are listed as non-qualifying. Switch to wired 3.5 mm or USB-C audio, a USB DAC, HDMI/ARC/eARC, or a Bluetooth route using LDAC, LHDC or aptX Lossless, then test again. If the source itself has no lossless rendition, the codec will remain lossy regardless of the ceiling.

The lossless addon is never contacted

If the addon uses checkValidLossless=1, this is expected when BitChord detects a non-qualifying output. The app skips that addon and resolves through the next source. Use a qualifying output before troubleshooting the addon configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mobile data use is higher than expected

Confirm that the mobile-data ceiling is actually set to LOW rather than HIGH or LOSSLESS. Then check the system’s per-app usage meter. BitChord does not publish one fixed consumption figure for each tier, so the observed amount may vary with the tracks and renditions being played.

Playback quality changes when the network changes

This is the intended result of separate ceilings. Wi‑Fi and mobile data can request different quality targets, so the same track may resolve to different codecs or bitrates. Use Stats for nerds on each network to see the change rather than judging only by the label in the player.

Settings by listening situation

Situation Wi‑Fi ceiling Mobile-data ceiling Output guidance
Everyday listening with ordinary headphones HIGH LOW Use wired or standard Bluetooth; LOSSLESS is unnecessary unless the route qualifies.
Critical listening with a wired setup LOSSLESS LOW or HIGH, depending on allowance Use 3.5 mm, USB-C audio, a USB DAC, line out or HDMI-family output.
Premium Bluetooth listening LOSSLESS if the link uses LDAC, LHDC or aptX Lossless LOW or HIGH Verify the active codec because other Bluetooth codecs are non-qualifying.
Travel or roaming HIGH when available LOW Prioritize predictable consumption; monitor the device and carrier meters.
Phone speaker or casting HIGH LOW These routes are not lossless-capable, so LOSSLESS provides no end-to-end benefit.

Bottom line for BitChord

Set Wi‑Fi to HIGH, use LOSSLESS there only with a suitable source and lossless-capable output, and set mobile data to LOW when data use is the priority. Treat the output path as part of the setting: BitChord can request lossless audio, but only qualifying wired, USB, HDMI-family or selected Bluetooth routes can preserve it. Finally, use Stats for nerds to confirm the decoded codec, bitrate, bit depth and sample rate instead of relying on a quality label alone.
