For most Android users in India, start with Phone by Google. It can identify businesses, warn about suspected spam and optionally filter those calls without adding a separate app. If you use a Samsung Galaxy, check Smart Call first because it is built into the phone. Choose Eyecon when full-screen caller photos, reverse lookup and SMS blocking matter more than keeping everything native. Hiya AI Phone is worth investigating for scam detection and call-assistance features, but its India rollout and pricing require verification.
Which Truecaller alternative should you try first?
The right choice depends on whether you need a simple caller label, aggressive spam protection, visual contact features or newer scam-analysis tools. There is no verified, independent India benchmark that proves one of these services is the most accurate. Caller names are useful signals, not identity proof.

These products do not all solve the same problem. Phone by Google and Smart Call combine identification with spam controls. Eyecon adds a visual contact experience and reverse lookup. Hiya AI Phone focuses on analysis during or around a call. You can therefore prefer one without claiming it has the highest recognition rate.

How caller identification works in India
A caller-ID service usually compares an incoming number with business records, user-submitted names, spam reports or other databases. TRAI describes native smartphone tools and third-party services as generally using crowdsourced data and cautions that “the crowd-sourced name identity information may not be reliable, in many instances.” A label can be outdated, attached to a recycled number or supplied by someone else.

Use a displayed name to decide whether to answer, not to authenticate a person. For a bank, delivery company, government office, employer or any caller requesting money, an OTP, account access or remote-control software, end the call and use a number from an official website, statement or app.
Phone by Google: the best first test for most Android users
What you get
Phone by Google includes caller ID and spam protection where supported. Google documents business caller identification, warnings for suspected spam and an optional filter that can block suspected spam calls. The caller-ID feature can be useful even when a number is not saved, while filtering is intended to reduce interruptions rather than prove who is calling.
Caller ID and spam protection is enabled by default where supported, but Google allows you to turn it off. Some capabilities depend on Android version and the phone’s software configuration. Google’s documented minimum for certain functions is Android 6.0 or newer. Fake-call detection has stricter requirements: Android 12 or newer, the Phone and Contacts apps, and Google Messages with RCS enabled.

Google’s explanation is unusually direct: “To use caller ID and spam protection, your phone may need to send information about your calls to Google.” Google says numbers may be sent to identify a business or determine whether a call is spam, and says it does not get phone numbers from your contact list. That is a specific data flow to weigh against the convenience of automatic labels.

Turn caller ID and spam protection on or off
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap the More menu (the three-dot button), then open Settings.
- Tap Caller ID and spam.
- Review the switch for See caller and spam ID and leave it on if you want business names and suspected-spam warnings.
- If available on your device, review the option to Filter spam calls. Turn it on only if you accept that suspected spam may be blocked or handled differently from ordinary calls.
- Make a test call from a known number and check that ordinary contacts still appear normally. If a legitimate business is filtered, turn filtering off and use the warning as a manual prompt instead.
When Phone by Google is a poor fit
- Your phone does not use the Phone app or does not support the relevant Android feature.
- You need a full-screen photo caller experience or a reverse-lookup interface.
- You want to avoid sending call-related numbers to Google for identification and spam analysis.
- You require a feature that is not available in your country, device build or Android version.
Samsung Smart Call: check your Galaxy before installing anything
Features and provider
Samsung India says Smart Call “lets you know who’s calling even when the number isn’t on your contact list.” It can identify callers, label suspected fraud or spam, and let you report or block unwanted numbers. Samsung identifies Hiya as the service provider behind Smart Call. Hiya also explains that an incorrect identity can be reported for removal.
Smart Call is attractive because it is integrated with the Samsung dialer. You do not need to replace the default phone app or grant a new app access to contacts merely to try the basic feature. Samsung warns that available functions vary by country and device, so a menu shown on one Galaxy model may not appear on another.
Enable it on a supported Galaxy
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap the three-dot menu and choose Settings or open Call settings, depending on the One UI version.
- Look for Caller ID and spam protection or Smart Call.
- Enable caller identification and review the controls for reporting or blocking spam.
- When an incorrect identity appears, use the report option rather than assuming the label is authoritative.
When Smart Call is preferable
- You already use a Samsung Galaxy with Smart Call exposed in its call settings.
- You want spam reporting and blocking without adding a separate caller-ID app.
- You prefer the phone maker’s integrated permission and update path.
If Smart Call is missing, that does not necessarily mean the phone is defective. Country, carrier, model and software version can change the available controls. Check the call-settings screen and Samsung’s support information for your exact device before installing another service.

What distinguishes it
Eyecon’s India Google Play listing describes full-screen caller ID, spam-call and SMS blocking, reverse lookup, a smart dialer and contact management. Those features make it the clearest fit for someone who wants more than a small caller-name banner. Full-screen images can make familiar callers easier to recognize, while reverse lookup gives you a way to investigate an unsaved number.
Install and configure it carefully
- Install Eyecon from the India Google Play listing and read the current permissions screen before accepting.
- Open the app’s settings and review which permissions are requested for contacts, phone calls, SMS, notifications and any other feature.
- If Android asks you to choose a default caller-ID or spam app, select Eyecon only after confirming that its behavior matches your expectations.
- Enable caller photos, reverse lookup or SMS blocking individually rather than turning on every option at once.
- Place a test call and send a test SMS from a trusted number. Confirm that legitimate messages are not being diverted or blocked.
Important limitations
The store listing can change: ratings, permissions, availability and advertised features are not permanent specifications. It also does not establish an accuracy rate. Review the current privacy policy and permissions immediately before installation, especially if you keep sensitive contacts or messages on the phone. Hiya AI Phone: promising scam assistance, but verify India support
Hiya’s AI Phone product page describes intelligent call summaries and transcripts, real-time scam detection and synthetic-voice detection. These capabilities target a different concern from ordinary caller-name lookup: recognizing suspicious conversation patterns or AI-generated voices during a call.
The available product information does not establish an India-specific rollout, compatible handset list or price. Treat it as an option to investigate, not a guaranteed replacement for the caller-ID features on your phone. Before installing or paying, verify that the app can be downloaded in your Indian account, works with your Android version and carrier, and clearly explains what audio or call metadata it processes.

Privacy: compare the data path, not just the feature list
Caller-ID tools need enough information to associate a number with a name or risk category. The important question is what leaves your phone, when it leaves, and whether you can disable the feature.

On Android, you can review or revoke permissions through Settings > Apps > [the app] > Permissions; the exact label can vary by software version. Revoking a permission can disable the related feature. Do not grant SMS, contacts or call access solely because an app requests it—enable only what you understand and need.

How to choose without relying on an accuracy claim
Choose the native option first
Try Phone by Google if your phone supports it. Galaxy owners should inspect Smart Call before downloading a separate app. Native tools usually involve fewer moving parts: one dialer, one settings area and no additional default-app handoff.
Add a standalone app for a specific missing capability
Pick Eyecon if visual caller photos, reverse lookup or SMS blocking is the reason you are changing tools. Consider Hiya AI Phone only when its scam-analysis features are available in India and its data practices fit your requirements.

Prefer control over automatic blocking
Warnings preserve the chance to answer a legitimate unknown caller. Automatic filtering can save time but can also hide an important call when a business number is misclassified. Start with identification and reporting, then enable blocking after observing how your phone handles local calls.
Separate convenience from authentication
No caller-ID label proves that the person is a bank employee, courier, police officer or government representative. A fraudster can spoof a number, and a legitimate number can be mislabeled. Use the organization’s official app, website or paperwork to initiate a return call.

Practical setup checklist
- Record your phone model, Android or One UI version and carrier before troubleshooting a missing feature.
- Open Phone settings and review caller-ID and spam switches before installing another app.
- On a Galaxy, check Call settings for Smart Call or Caller ID and spam protection.
- Install only from the official Google Play listing for the app and read the current permissions.
- Decide whether the app should become the default caller-ID or spam app; do not accept the change automatically.
- Test with a trusted caller, a known business and a harmless SMS before enabling aggressive blocking.
- Keep a note of how to disable filtering so you can recover missed calls quickly.
- For sensitive calls, independently verify the number even when the label looks familiar.
Troubleshooting common problems
No caller name appears
Confirm that caller ID is enabled, the phone has a data connection when the service requires one, and the number is not hidden. Update the phone app and system software, then test with a number that is likely to have a business record. A missing label can simply mean the database has no reliable match.
A legitimate caller is marked as spam
Do not rely on the label alone. Report the incorrect classification through the available control, add the number to your contacts and disable automatic filtering while you investigate. Contact the organization through an independently sourced number.
Spam calls still get through
Enable the optional filtering control if you accept its trade-off, and report repeated numbers so the service has a signal to use. Caller-ID databases change over time; a new or spoofed number may not yet be classified.
The Smart Call or caller-ID menu is missing
Check the exact model, country firmware and carrier configuration. Samsung explicitly says Smart Call functions vary by country and device. If the feature is unavailable, use the native Phone by Google option where supported or evaluate a standalone app with carefully reviewed permissions.
An app asks for more access than expected
Stop setup and read the permission explanation. A visual dialer may need contacts and phone access, while SMS blocking may require messaging access. If you cannot explain why a permission is necessary, decline it or choose a native feature with a narrower data path.
Bottom line for Indian Android users
Start with the caller-ID and spam controls already on your phone: Phone by Google for most Android devices, or Smart Call on a supported Samsung Galaxy. Move to Eyecon when reverse lookup, full-screen photos and SMS blocking justify a separate app. Investigate Hiya AI Phone only after confirming India availability and understanding its handling of summaries, transcripts and voice data. Whatever you install, treat every label as advisory and verify high-risk callers through an independent official channel.
