For a home with both rugs and hard flooring, start by mapping every carpet, setting carpet preference to Vacuum Only, enabling Carpet Boost, using Standard suction for routine vacuuming, and selecting Low water on sealed wood or Moderate water on tile. Use No Cleaning for delicate rugs or areas the robot must avoid. Increase suction or water only when the flooring and the dirt justify it, because Tapo controls and mop-lifting behavior vary by model, firmware and region.
A reliable starting profile
These settings are a practical baseline, not a universal performance rating. Run one or two cleaning cycles, inspect the floor and rug, and then adjust the setting that addresses the actual problem.
| Area or task | Carpet preference | Suction | Water | Other setting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mixed carpet and hard floor, routine cleaning | Vacuum Only on mapped carpets | Standard | Low on sealed wood; Moderate on tile | Carpet Boost on, if available |
| Delicate, shag or off-limits rug | No Cleaning | Not applicable unless the robot must cross it | None in that area | Add a no-mop or no-cleaning zone |
| Hard floor with ordinary dust | Not applicable | Standard | None for vacuum-only runs | Quiet when noise is the priority |
| Pet hair, tracked grit or embedded debris | Vacuum Only | Turbo or Max | None during the heavy vacuum pass | Use a second, lower-moisture mop run if required |
| Tile or sealed stone with visible soil | Vacuum Only on carpets | Standard or Turbo | Moderate; High only when the floor tolerates extra moisture | Keep carpets excluded from the mopping route |
The app may show different controls or names on different Tapo models. If a setting in this table is missing, do not substitute a similarly named control without checking the manual for your exact model.

Tapo’s map tools separate three decisions: whether the robot enters a carpet, whether it vacuums there, and whether it mops there. Choosing the right combination is safer than relying on automatic carpet recognition alone.

| Carpet preference | Will the robot enter the carpet? | Vacuuming | Mopping | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No Cleaning | No, except for a brief crossing when the robot cannot reach another area without passing through | No | No | The rug is delicate, high pile, fringe-covered or outside the cleaning plan |
| Vacuum Only | Yes | Yes | No | You want rugs cleaned but must keep them dry |
| Vacuum & Mop | Yes | Yes | Yes | The surface is a carpet-safe area only when your model explicitly supports that behavior |
For most mixed-floor homes, Vacuum Only is the safest carpet choice. It lets the robot collect hair and grit from a rug while preventing a mopping pass there. Select No Cleaning when entering the rug is undesirable rather than merely wetting it.
Carpet Boost
Carpet Boost raises suction by one level while the robot cleans mapped carpet. It applies to all mapped carpet areas and stops increasing suction when the device is already at its maximum. For example, a Standard run can become one level stronger on carpet, but a Max run cannot become more powerful through Boost. The feature changes suction only; it does not lift a mop or guarantee that water will stay off a rug.
No-mop zones
A no-mop zone prevents the robot from entering a marked area with the mop mount installed on models that support this map function. Draw the boundary around the entire rug, including the edge where the mop could swing or the robot could turn. Keep the zone after remapping; a new map or changed room partition can remove or alter it.

Set up a mixed-floor map step by step
- Create or update the map with the floor visible. Remove temporary objects that could make a rug look like a solid floor, and allow the robot to complete the mapping pass rather than editing a partial map.
- Identify every carpet and rug. Use the map editor’s carpet or floor-type tools to mark small mats, runners and areas that automatic detection missed. Treat a rug with a hard backing as carpet if it can be damaged by moisture.
- Assign the carpet preference. Choose Vacuum Only for rugs that should be vacuumed dry, or No Cleaning for delicate and prohibited areas. Use Vacuum & Mop only when your model documentation confirms that the surface and mop system are suitable.
- Add no-mop boundaries where appropriate. A no-mop zone is an additional safeguard for a rug beside tile or wood. Make the boundary large enough to account for navigation error and the robot’s turning radius.
- Turn on Carpet Boost. Enable it after carpets are mapped. Because Boost applies to mapped carpet areas, it cannot reliably protect or intensify cleaning on a rug the map does not identify.
- Save the map and run a short test. Watch the first transition from hard floor to rug. Confirm that the robot vacuums without dispensing water and that it returns to the correct behavior when it leaves the carpet.
- Recheck after firmware or map changes. Availability and menu labels can change with firmware and app versions. Test again if the robot is updated, a map is restored or rooms are merged.
Choose suction by the job
TP-Link’s support documentation lists four general suction choices: Quiet, Standard, Turbo and Max. Some Max-class devices also expose Ultra for difficult carpets. These are control modes supplied by the manufacturer, not independently measured cleaning scores.

| Mode | Best starting use | Trade-off | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quiet | Bedrooms, calls, sleeping children or a light maintenance pass | Lower cleaning intensity than the stronger modes | Dust, hair or grit remains after a normal cycle |
| Standard | Daily dust on hard floors and ordinary rug maintenance | Balanced cleaning, sound and power use | Pet hair, tracked soil or embedded particles need more agitation |
| Turbo | More hair, crumbs and grit on hard floors or medium-pile carpet | More noise and power demand than Standard | One Turbo pass still leaves visible debris |
| Max | Heavy debris, dense pet hair and embedded grit | Highest standard suction setting, with the greatest noise and power demand among the common choices | Only if the model offers Ultra and the carpet still needs additional intensity |
| Ultra | Difficult carpets on models that provide this option | Availability is model-specific and the setting is the most aggressive option on supported devices | Do not assume it exists on a device that shows only Quiet, Standard, Turbo and Max |
Use Standard as the default rather than leaving every room on Max. Reserve Turbo or Max for a defined problem, such as a shedding pet’s route or grit near an entryway. If the robot is loud, runs out of charge before finishing or scatters light debris, stepping down to Standard or Quiet may produce a more practical whole-home result.
Set water flow for the floor, not the stain alone
Mopping models provide some combination of None, Low, Moderate and High water flow. The available levels depend on the model, firmware and region.
| Water level | Suitable starting use | Use caution when |
|---|---|---|
| None | Vacuum-only runs, carpet protection and floors that should not be dampened | The app still has a mop mount fitted; a damp pad can carry moisture even when spraying is disabled |
| Low | Sealed wood or plank floors, light maintenance and small amounts of dust | The floor finish is worn, unsealed or the manufacturer specifies dry cleaning |
| Moderate | Tile, sealed stone and more visible soil | Wood, laminate joints, porous grout or areas where water pools |
| High | Hard floors that explicitly tolerate more moisture and require additional wet cleaning | Any unsealed wood, damaged finish, porous surface or rug-adjacent route |
Start conservatively and increase one step only if the floor remains safe and the first pass does not remove the soil. More water is not automatically better: excess moisture can leave streaks, enter plank joints or be carried onto a rug by the mop pad. Follow the flooring manufacturer’s care instructions before using Moderate or High.

Prevent a mop from wetting rugs
Carpet detection and mop lifting are separate capabilities. A robot can recognize carpet yet still carry a damp mop across it if the model cannot physically remove or lift the mop assembly.
- Map the rug manually. Do not rely solely on a live carpet sensor when the rug has a low pile, unusual color or a border that resembles hard floor.
- Choose Vacuum Only or No Cleaning. These settings define the intended behavior during a mopping run.
- Use a no-mop zone for high-risk rugs. Mark the entire rug and a small safety margin around it where supported.
- Verify the hardware behavior. Some models stop spraying water when they detect carpet but do not lift the mop. If the manual does not promise automatic mop removal, assume the pad can remain damp.
- Run the first mop cycle under supervision. Check the carpet edge, the robot’s turning maneuver and the pad after it leaves the hard floor.
If a rug is valuable, absorbent or difficult to replace, remove the mop mount for a vacuum-only run or keep that area outside the robot’s route unless your exact model explicitly confirms automatic mop removal.
What changes between Tapo models
“Tapo suction” is not one specification. Product pages describe different hardware, so settings should be interpreted within the model’s limits.
| Model | Published suction or feature | Water or mop information | What it means for settings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tapo RV10 | 2,000 Pa maximum suction; Carpet Auto-Boost | Three-level electronic water flow | Use the available suction and water levels shown by the RV10 app; do not compare its Pa figure directly with a newer model’s headline number |
| Tapo RV50 Pro Omni | 15,000 Pa suction | Automatic mop removal for high-pile carpets | Its hardware can remove the mop for supported high-pile carpet, but mapped carpet preferences and no-mop zones remain useful safeguards |
The 2,000 Pa and 15,000 Pa figures describe different products and test specifications; they are not a Tapo-wide ranking or a prediction of pickup on every floor. A model’s actual menu can also differ from the generic Quiet, Standard, Turbo, Max and water-level descriptions.

Useful routines for common homes
Daily mixed-floor maintenance
Map all carpets, select Vacuum Only, enable Carpet Boost, use Standard suction and set Low water for sealed wood or Moderate for tile. Schedule vacuuming with the mop mount removed if your model does not lift it automatically. This routine keeps ordinary dust off both floor types without making every cycle noisy or wet.
Pet hair and entryway grit
Keep the carpet preference at Vacuum Only, then raise suction to Turbo or Max for the rooms where hair and grit collect. A dry vacuum pass before mopping prevents the mop from spreading loose debris. Return to Standard for the next maintenance cycle rather than leaving the entire map at Max.
Sealed wood or laminate-style plank floors
Use None for vacuum-only work or Low water for a light mop. Set the direction along the boards, avoid High, and keep rugs marked as No Cleaning or Vacuum Only. Stop the run if you see water gathering at joints, darkening wood or a persistent wet trail.
Recommended Free Tools
Tile, marble or sealed stone
Use Standard suction for dust and Moderate water for visible soil. Turbo can help with heavier dry debris before the mop cycle. High water is a conditional choice for a surface that tolerates it; it is not a default for every tile installation.

Delicate or high-pile rugs
Choose No Cleaning unless the model manual specifically supports the rug. If the robot is allowed to vacuum it, use Vacuum Only and test a small area first. Automatic mop removal on one model does not establish the same behavior on another.
Troubleshoot the most common setting problems
| Symptom | Likely setting or map issue | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| The rug becomes damp | The rug is unmapped, set to Vacuum & Mop, or the robot carries a damp pad without lifting it | Map the rug, change it to Vacuum Only or No Cleaning, add a no-mop zone and confirm the model’s mop-lifting behavior |
| The robot avoids a rug that should be vacuumed | The area is marked No Cleaning or the carpet boundary is oversized | Edit the map, assign Vacuum Only and run a supervised test at the boundary |
| Carpet Boost appears to do nothing | The carpet is not mapped, suction is already at maximum, or the model does not provide Boost | Confirm the carpet label, lower the base suction one level for testing and check the model’s supported features |
| Hard floors look streaky | Water is too high, the pad is dirty or the floor finish requires dry care | Switch to Low or None, wash or replace the pad as directed and follow the flooring manufacturer’s instructions |
| Water is not dispensing | Water is set to None, the tank or pad is not installed correctly, or the model has a control limitation | Select Low or Moderate where appropriate, reseat the tank and pad, and consult the exact model manual |
| The robot leaves debris after cleaning | Quiet or Standard may be insufficient for the soil, or the brush and filter need maintenance | Try Turbo or Max for that area, then clean the brush, filter and dustbin before judging the setting |
| The app lacks a control mentioned in a guide | Feature availability varies by model, firmware, app version and region | Update the app if appropriate, check the model’s current manual and use only the controls actually shown for the device |
Maintenance that keeps settings effective
Suction and water choices cannot compensate for a blocked brush, full dustbin or saturated pad. Empty the dustbin, clear hair from the main and side brushes, clean the filter as directed and wash or replace the mop pad according to the manual. A dirty pad can smear a floor even when the water setting is correct.
For the RV10, the manufacturer recommends using Tapo Multi-Surface Floor Cleaning Solution. Treat that as a manufacturer recommendation, not as an independent test result, and follow the dilution and compatibility instructions for the exact device. Do not add an unapproved chemical simply to increase cleaning strength.
For the RV50 Pro Omni, replace worn mop pads through official channels or verify that any third-party replacement is explicitly compatible with the exact model. A pad that does not fit can drag, leak or interfere with automatic removal.
Why a setting may be missing or behave differently
- Model hardware: Mop removal, Carpet Auto-Boost and Ultra suction are not universal Tapo features.
- Firmware and app version: Menu labels and map tools can change after updates.
- Region: TP-Link can expose different functions or consumables in different markets.
- Floor classification: Carpet Boost relies on mapped carpet areas; an incorrect map can produce apparently inconsistent behavior.
- Physical layout: Thresholds, fringe, glossy surfaces and narrow transitions can prevent the robot from following the intended route even when the settings are correct.
When the app and a general guide disagree, the instructions for your exact model and current firmware take precedence.
