Best documented long-duration choice: TERRO Fruit Fly Trap T2502B, which uses a food-based liquid lure and is specified for up to 45 days per trap. Best alternative for an essential-oil formulation: Raid Essentials Fruit Fly Trap, which uses essential oils and plant-based ingredients and is replaced after 21 days. Neither product has an independent head-to-head catch-rate study establishing a universal winner. Whichever trap you choose, place it beside the activity and remove the moist organic material where fruit flies are breeding.
What to buy for a kitchen infestation
A purpose-built liquid-lure trap is the most practical store-bought starting point when fruit flies are circling a kitchen. The trap should sit beside the source of activity, not across the room, while you inspect produce, waste containers, sinks and other damp areas. A trap can reduce the flying population, but sanitation is what removes the conditions that let a new generation appear.
The two named retail products have different documented formulations and service intervals. TERRO publishes the longest stated use period in this comparison. Raid offers a plant-based, essential-oil formulation and gives a shorter replacement interval. A commercial vinegar-style trap is another pesticide-free route, although the available source does not establish a current price or a comparable catch-rate result.

Why fruit flies keep appearing after you set a trap
Fruit flies can arrive with store-bought or homegrown produce, according to Cornell’s integrated pest-management guidance. Eggs or larvae already associated with incoming produce can mature after the food is placed in the kitchen. A trap then appears to “fail” because adults continue emerging from a source that has not been removed.

Moist organic debris is central to the problem. TERRO describes fruit flies as dependent on moist organic debris, while extension guidance advises cleaning and sterilizing drains and removing breeding material. Common inspection points include overripe fruit, vegetable scraps, trash and recycling residue, sink overflows, dishwasher edges, damp cloths, spills beneath appliances and produce-storage areas.
Use the trap and the cleanup together. The trap addresses the flying adults that you can see; source removal prevents hidden immature stages from replacing them. Howard Russell, an entomologist answering through Ask Extension, writes that homemade or commercially available fruit-fly traps are “very effective in reducing their numbers,” while also recommending drain cleaning and removal of breeding material. Confirm that the insects are fruit flies
Before opening a package, make a reasonable identification. Cornell notes that fruit flies may enter on produce, but a kitchen can also contain other tiny flying insects. This matters because the Raid label specifically says its trap has not been tested on gnats or drain flies.
Use the activity pattern
- Look for repeated activity around fruit bowls, produce storage, garbage, sinks, dishwashers or counters rather than assuming every small flying insect is the same pest.
- Check whether the insects are associated with fermenting or decaying food and damp organic residue.
- If activity is concentrated at a drain and does not respond to a fruit-fly lure, reconsider the identification instead of continually replacing traps.
When identification remains uncertain, use the product only as its label permits and concentrate on removing organic residue. Do not treat a lack of response as proof that a stronger or different chemical is needed.

TERRO Fruit Fly Trap T2502B: the long-interval option
TERRO’s T2502B package documents a food-based liquid lure, two traps and a 1 fl oz bottle of lure. The apple-shaped housing is designed to sit in the places where fruit flies are usually observed. TERRO specifies up to 45 days of use per trap, making this the longest stated service interval among the named retail products.
The product page lists fruit bowls, garbage areas, sinks, dishwashers, counters and stored produce as placement areas. Choose the location with the clearest activity and keep the housing upright and undisturbed. A trap placed beside a quiet wall while flies are feeding elsewhere is unlikely to perform as well as one beside the active source.
“Up to” is a maximum stated period, not a guarantee that every infestation will be controlled within that time. Heavy activity, an undiscovered breeding site or a different insect can all make the result look disappointing. The manufacturer’s specification also does not establish superiority in catch rate over competing traps.

Raid Essentials Fruit Fly Trap: the plant-based alternative
Raid describes its Fruit Fly Trap as using essential oils and plant-based ingredients. It is intended for fruit flies and should be placed near the source of activity. The label instructs replacement after 21 days, so a longer infestation may require more frequent renewal than the TERRO schedule.

Read and follow the label’s safety directions. The product information includes precautions concerning eye injury and storage around children and pets. Keep the trap in a stable position where it cannot be knocked over, and store any unused product as directed on the package.
Raid states that this trap has not been tested on gnats or drain flies. If the insects are concentrated in drains or do not fit the fruit-fly pattern, treat that statement as a reason to verify the pest rather than assuming the trap is defective.
How to deploy a store-bought trap
- Locate the strongest activity. Watch where flies repeatedly land or circle. Check fruit bowls, trash and recycling, sinks, dishwasher areas, counters and produce storage. These are the locations specifically listed in the TERRO guidance; Raid’s instruction is to place the trap near the source.
- Inspect the likely source before moving anything. Look under and behind containers, inside trash-can rims, around sink overflows and beneath produce. Remove spoiled food and visible residue into a sealed waste bag.
- Prepare the trap exactly as its label directs. Do not dilute, transfer or combine lures. For the TERRO package, use the supplied food-based lure and trap housing as instructed. For Raid, use the supplied trap and follow its opening and placement directions.
- Set it beside, not inside, the active area. Place the trap upright on a level surface close to the fruit bowl, waste area, sink or other source. Keep it where normal kitchen activity will not tip or contaminate it.
- Clean the breeding site at the same time. Remove organic debris, wash affected surfaces and clean and sterilize drains as appropriate for the fixture. A trap cannot substitute for this step.
- Leave the setup undisturbed while you monitor it. Avoid moving the trap every few hours. Note whether activity shifts to another location; that often indicates a second source rather than a need for a different lure.
- Replace and dispose of the trap on schedule. TERRO states up to 45 days per trap; Raid says to replace after 21 days. Follow the package directions for disposal and do not keep a trap beyond its stated interval expecting the lure to remain effective.
Kitchen source-removal checklist
- Produce: Separate overripe items, discard anything leaking or fermenting, and inspect new produce as it enters the kitchen. Cornell identifies store-bought and homegrown produce as possible entry routes.
- Trash and recycling: Empty containers holding food residue, rinse recyclables and clean the inside rim and bottom of the bin.
- Sinks and drains: Remove organic film and follow appropriate cleaning and sterilizing practices. Include sink overflows, which can retain damp debris.
- Dishwasher area: Check the door seal, lower edge and nearby floor or cabinet for trapped food residue or moisture.
- Counters and appliances: Wipe spills under appliances and along counter joints where liquid and scraps can remain unseen.
- Storage: Clean produce drawers, bowls and shelves, then keep replacement produce free of damaged pieces.
Do not stop after cleaning only the area where you first saw flies. A second damp residue pocket can sustain the infestation even when the original trap is catching adults.

If activity is spread across several points, start with the location showing the greatest concentration and inspect the others immediately. A single trap may not be close enough to every source, but adding traps without removing the sources only treats the visible symptom.

How long to wait and what to monitor
Use the manufacturer’s service interval as the replacement deadline, not as a promise of eradication. TERRO’s stated maximum is 45 days per trap; Raid’s label says 21 days. During that period, monitor both the trap and the kitchen:
- Record whether the number of flying adults is declining after source cleanup.
- Look for activity at a new sink, bin or produce container, which can reveal a second breeding site.
- Check that the trap remains upright, clean and positioned near the source.
- Replace it at the documented interval even if some lure remains.
A continuing population after cleanup and a full service interval points to one of three practical possibilities: an overlooked breeding material, ongoing arrival on new produce, or insects other than fruit flies. Reinspect before buying more traps.

The trap catches little or nothing
Recheck placement first. Move it closer to the activity listed by the manufacturer, then inspect produce, waste, drains and damp residue. Confirm that the lure was prepared and opened according to the label and that the trap has not been tipped or contaminated.
Flies keep appearing after several days
Search for a hidden source rather than assuming the lure is ineffective. Incoming produce can introduce fruit flies, and moist organic debris can remain in a drain, overflow, dishwasher edge or recycling container. Remove that material and continue monitoring the original and newly discovered locations.

The insects are concentrated in a drain
Prioritize drain cleaning and identification. Raid’s product information says it has not been tested on drain flies, so repeated replacement of that trap is not an evidence-based response to a drain-fly problem.
Activity returns after the trap is discarded
Disposal ends the trap’s control of the adults it was attracting; it does not remove a breeding site or prevent new flies arriving with produce. Repeat the source inspection and keep food and waste areas free of damp organic residue.
Safety, storage and disposal
Keep either product upright and out of reach of children and pets. Follow the package label for opening, handling, storage and disposal. Raid’s label includes eye-injury precautions, so avoid contact with eyes and treat any label-directed first-aid instruction as controlling. Do not combine the lure with cleaners or transfer it to an unmarked container.
Place traps where they will not be knocked into food, sinks or walking paths. Dispose of used traps and remaining lure according to the product label and local waste rules. The exact disposal method can vary by package and jurisdiction, so the label is more reliable than a generic household-waste assumption.
Which trap should you choose?
Choose TERRO T2502B if the documented 45-day maximum, food-based liquid lure and two-trap package fit your kitchen and you want fewer scheduled replacements. Choose Raid Essentials if essential oils and plant-based ingredients are your priority and you are comfortable with the 21-day replacement instruction. Choose a commercial vinegar-style trap if a pesticide-free vinegar approach matters most and you accept that the available guidance does not provide a current price or a direct performance comparison.
These are documented-feature choices, not a proven ranking by catch rate. No independent, dated head-to-head study establishes that one of the named retail products catches more flies than all the others. The most defensible decision is therefore the trap whose formulation and service interval match your preference, placed beside the activity while you remove the breeding material.
