If you want Star Wars without playing a Jedi or swinging a lightsaber, start with Star Wars: Republic Commando for squad-based ground combat or Star Wars: Squadrons for first-person starfighter combat. Star Wars Battlefront II is worth considering only if you can avoid its optional hero characters, while Star Wars: The Old Republic is a poor fit for a strict no-Jedi requirement because Jedi and Sith are built into its class choices.

What counts as a Star Wars game without Jedi combat?

There is an important difference between a game that centers on a non-Force-user role and a game that contains no Jedi, Sith, lightsabers, or Force powers anywhere. The strongest matches put you in a military, piloting, or other non-Jedi role for the main experience. A broader game may still let another player or an optional mode use an iconic Force user.

Using that distinction, the recommendations fall into three groups:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Strictest matches: Republic Commando and Squadrons. Their featured roles are clone troopers and starfighter pilots.
  • Conditional match: Battlefront II. You can spend your time as a trooper, vehicle crew member, or pilot, but the game also includes hero characters and lightsaber combat.
  • Role-playing exception: The Old Republic. You can select a Bounty Hunter or another non-Jedi role, but Jedi and Sith are central options rather than incidental content.

If “at all” is literal for you, choose one of the first two games and skip the latter pair.

A useful strictness test

Ask yourself three separate questions before buying. First, do you merely want to avoid controlling a Jedi? Second, are you comfortable seeing Jedi or Sith elsewhere in a match, campaign, or class roster? Third, would even a brief lightsaber encounter violate the reason you are avoiding these games? The answers change the shortlist. A player who answers “no” only to the first question can make sensible use of Battlefront II or a non-Jedi class in The Old Republic. A player who answers “yes” to the last question should stay with Republic Commando or Squadrons.

This also explains why a game can be a good personal fit without being a literal lightsaber-free product. The recommendation is about the role you occupy and the experience the game repeatedly asks you to perform, not a claim that every piece of content in the package has been removed.

Game Primary role Combat focus Jedi exposure Solo and multiplayer notes Best for
Star Wars: Republic Commando Elite Clone Trooper leading a squad Ground-based squad shooter with squad commands and squadmate AI Centered on non-Jedi combat; no Jedi role is identified in the available gameplay description Recommended as a focused squad experience; specific mode details are not established here Players who want military teamwork behind enemy lines
Star Wars: Squadrons New Republic or Imperial starfighter pilot First-person space dogfights, fleet battles, ship loadout customization Centered on spacecraft rather than lightsabers Single-player story plus 5v5 dogfights and fleet battles; the full game supports VR Players who want cockpit combat and competitive multiplayer
Star Wars Battlefront II Trooper, vehicle operator, starfighter pilot, or hero Large battles across infantry, vehicles, starfighters, and character combat Optional but explicit: iconic characters include Force users and lightsaber combat Special-forces campaign content and large multiplayer battles Players willing to avoid hero selections and occasional Force-user encounters
Star Wars: The Old Republic Class-based role-playing character Class-specific missions and combat Not strict: Jedi and Sith are available alongside Bounty Hunter and other roles Role-playing choice depends on the class you select Players who want a non-Jedi class inside a broader Force-centered setting

1. Star Wars: Republic Commando — the strongest ground-combat fit

Republic Commando is the clearest choice if your ideal Star Wars game is a military shooter rather than a space opera about Force users. You play an elite Clone Trooper operating behind enemy lines during the Clone Wars. The emphasis is on firearms, positioning, squad coordination, and completing objectives with a specialized team.

Why it fits the no-lightsaber requirement

The player fantasy is a clone commando, not a Jedi. Available descriptions focus on squad commands and squadmate artificial intelligence, so the defining decisions are tactical: direct your team, use its capabilities, and survive ground engagements. That makes it fundamentally different from games in which a non-Jedi character is merely a temporary detour from a lightsaber-focused campaign.

How the squad changes the experience

Squad commands give the game a layer beyond ordinary run-and-gun shooting. Your teammates are part of the combat loop rather than decorative companions. You are managing a small unit while personally fighting, which suits readers who want the military side of the Clone Wars and do not want a Force-user power fantasy.

The appeal is also about scale. You are not being asked to command a whole army or rotate through a roster of famous heroes. The focus stays on a specialized team operating behind enemy lines. That narrower premise can be an advantage for someone who wants the non-Jedi identity to remain consistent from one objective to the next.

  • Choose it for: enclosed and open ground missions, command decisions, clone-trooper equipment, and a focused military tone.
  • Expect: squadmate AI and command interactions to matter alongside your own weapon handling.
  • Do not expect: starfighter piloting, a broad hero roster, or a campaign built around Jedi abilities.

Who should pass?

Pass if your priority is a pilot simulator, a large-scale multiplayer sandbox, or a role-playing system with many character classes. This is the specialized pick: it delivers the commando perspective rather than trying to represent every corner of Star Wars.

2. Star Wars: Squadrons — the strongest space-combat fit

Squadrons puts you in the cockpit. Its official feature description centers on 5v5 dogfights, fleet battles, customizable starfighters, and a single-player story. The full game can also be played in virtual reality. If your objection is specifically to controlling a Jedi or using a lightsaber, this is one of the cleanest possible Star Wars premises: manage a starfighter, coordinate with a squadron, and fight in space.

What you actually do

The core loop is piloting rather than character combat. You select and customize a starfighter, learn its handling, and participate in either competitive team battles or the story campaign. Fleet battles provide a larger objective structure than a simple duel, while 5v5 dogfights offer a direct team-versus-team format.

That split helps match the game to your preferred pace. Dogfights are the straightforward competitive option, while fleet battles add a broader team objective and a sense of progression through a larger engagement. In both cases, your avatar remains a pilot in a ship, not a hero wielding a melee weapon.

Solo, multiplayer, and VR

The single-player story makes Squadrons useful even if you do not want an online-only game. Its multiplayer modes add 5v5 dogfights and fleet battles for readers who want a competitive setting. The official description says the full game is playable in VR, but VR is an option rather than a prerequisite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat VR support as a hidden hardware requirement. You can begin with a conventional display and input device, then decide whether a headset would improve the cockpit perspective for you. The important purchase decision is whether you want a starfighter game at all; the visual format is secondary.

Controls: controller, keyboard, or HOTAS

You can play with a standard controller or mouse and keyboard. TechRadar also describes support for HOTAS hardware—“hands on throttle and stick”—for a more cockpit-like setup. A flight stick is an enthusiast accessory, not a requirement. Start with the device you already own; add HOTAS only if you prefer dedicated throttle and stick controls after learning the game.

  • Use a controller if: you want the simplest setup and do not already own flight hardware.
  • Use mouse and keyboard if: you prefer precise desktop controls and quick access to multiple commands.
  • Use HOTAS if: you specifically want a physical throttle-and-stick arrangement and accept the extra cost and setup.

A common mistake is buying a stick before confirming that the game’s flight model and camera perspective suit you. Since the standard control options are supported, try those first. HOTAS can make the setup feel more like a cockpit, but it does not unlock a separate campaign or make the game more “officially” Star Wars.

Who should pass?

Pass if you want to fight on foot, issue orders to a ground squad, or explore a class-based role-playing world. Squadrons is intentionally narrow: its strength is making you a pilot.

3. Star Wars Battlefront II — a broad game with optional Jedi exposure

Battlefront II is the choice for readers who want variety. Its official descriptions include a special-forces campaign, troopers, vehicles, starfighters, and iconic characters. That breadth is also why it cannot be called completely free of Jedi or lightsaber combat.

How to keep it closer to a no-Jedi experience

Spend your time with ordinary trooper classes, vehicles, and starfighters rather than selecting hero characters. Those options let you experience infantry battles, armored combat, and space action without making a lightsaber character your avatar. However, the game is designed around a wider roster, so you may still encounter iconic characters in the surrounding battle or in modes where hero play is enabled.

Think of this as a preference-management option, not a content filter. You can choose a non-Jedi role whenever the mode allows it, but you cannot transform the entire game into Republic Commando or Squadrons. Its appeal comes from switching among battlefield types, and its cost is that Force-user content remains part of the package.

Why it is not a strict recommendation

The distinction is not technical wording; it affects the entire structure. In Battlefront II, character combat is an explicit part of the game. A reader who merely wants to avoid choosing a Jedi can use the trooper and vehicle content. A reader who wants no Jedi or lightsaber presence at all should not treat it as compliant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Your tolerance How Battlefront II fits
You only want to control a non-Jedi Potentially suitable when you select troopers, vehicles, or starfighters.
You want to avoid playing heroes but do not mind seeing them Conditional fit; hero content remains part of the broader game.
You want no Jedi, Sith, or lightsaber combat anywhere Not suitable because iconic character combat is included.

Who should choose it?

Choose it when variety matters more than purity. It offers a larger battlefield menu than either Republic Commando or Squadrons, but you must accept that the same package includes Force-user characters.

4. Star Wars: The Old Republic — only for a deliberately non-Jedi class

The Old Republic is a potential role-playing option, not a strict no-Jedi game. Lucasfilm’s games catalog describes a choice of roles including Jedi, Sith, Bounty Hunter, and others. That means you can create a non-Jedi character, but the setting and class lineup treat Force users as major pillars rather than rare exceptions.

When it can work

Select a Bounty Hunter or another non-Jedi class if your goal is to experience missions from a different perspective within a Star Wars role-playing framework. This gives you a character whose abilities and identity are not based on a lightsaber.

Why strict readers should skip it

You cannot honestly describe the game as free of Jedi-related content when Jedi and Sith are core available roles. Even if your own character never uses a lightsaber, the wider game is built to support those stories and play styles. Treat it as a compromise for readers who want class choice, not as a direct answer to an absolute prohibition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its main trade-off is therefore structural rather than mechanical. A non-Jedi class can satisfy your personal avatar preference, but choosing that class does not remove the Force-user branches from the broader role-playing world. If your concern is avoiding a lightsaber on your own character, it may work; if your concern is avoiding Jedi themes altogether, it does not.

Choose by the experience you want

If you want… Pick Reason
A clone commando leading a small unit Republic Commando Its identity is an elite Clone Trooper squad operating behind enemy lines, with squad commands and squadmate AI.
A cockpit and team-based space combat Squadrons It combines a single-player story with 5v5 dogfights, fleet battles, customizable starfighters, and optional VR.

A class-based role-playing game where you can avoid Jedi personally The Old Republic Non-Jedi classes such as Bounty Hunter are available, although Jedi and Sith remain central options.

A practical decision process

  1. Set your strictness level. If you cannot see or encounter Jedi or lightsaber combat, limit your shortlist to Republic Commando and Squadrons. If you only want to avoid controlling a Jedi, you can also consider Battlefront II or a non-Jedi class in The Old Republic.
  2. Choose ground or space. Pick Republic Commando for first-person ground missions and squad direction. Pick Squadrons for starfighter piloting.
  3. Decide whether variety is worth exposure to hero content. Battlefront II provides the widest mix of combat types, but it cannot enforce a lightsaber-free battlefield.
  4. Decide whether role-playing depth outweighs strictness. The Old Republic makes sense only if class selection and role-playing matter more than avoiding a Force-centered setting.
  5. Match the control setup to your preference. For Squadrons, begin with a controller or mouse and keyboard. Consider HOTAS only for a dedicated cockpit setup; it is optional.
  6. Check the mode before starting. In a broad game, select the activity that matches your tolerance. A trooper, vehicle, or starfighter mode in Battlefront II is a deliberate compromise, not evidence that the entire title is Jedi-free.

Buying, hardware, and availability considerations

Check the current platform, edition, and physical or digital format before purchasing. Availability can differ by country, storefront, platform generation, and date. There is no dependable universal current price or inventory position for these games, so retailer listings are time- and region-specific rather than permanent specifications.

For Republic Commando and Squadrons, search using the complete game title and verify that the listing matches the platform you own. Compare the edition name as well as the price: an apparent bargain may be a different format or storefront version. For Battlefront II, confirm that you are comfortable with its hero system before buying; a low price does not change the fact that Jedi and lightsaber content is included. For The Old Republic, confirm that its current access model and class availability suit you, then choose a non-Jedi class if you proceed.

Budget separately for optional accessories. A HOTAS flight stick can add cost and setup time to Squadrons, but neither a stick nor a VR headset is required by the feature description. A standard controller or mouse and keyboard is enough to begin. No accessory should be treated as a prerequisite for the recommendations above.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Equating “I do not select a Jedi” with “there are no Jedi.” Battlefront II and The Old Republic fail the stricter interpretation.
  • Buying a flight stick before trying the controls. Squadrons supports HOTAS, but standard input devices work and a stick is not required.
  • Assuming VR is mandatory for Squadrons. VR is supported, but the game also works with conventional display and controls.
  • Choosing by era alone. A Clone Wars setting does not automatically mean Jedi-focused gameplay; evaluate the role you control and the combat loop.
  • Assuming the broadest game is the best fit. Variety in Battlefront II comes with hero content, while the narrower games are better aligned with a strict role preference.
  • Ignoring your tolerance for surrounding content. If even seeing lightsaber combat would spoil the experience, do not use a conditional recommendation as a workaround.
  • Overreading a class label. A Bounty Hunter choice in The Old Republic changes your character, not the game’s wider Jedi-and-Sith setting.
  • Treating retailer information as fixed. Platform, edition, price, stock, and access terms can change by region and date.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best strictly non-Jedi Star Wars game?

Republic Commando is the best ground-focused answer, while Squadrons is the best space-focused answer. Both center the player on a clone trooper or starfighter pilot instead of a Force user.

Does Republic Commando use lightsabers?

Its defining player role is an elite Clone Trooper, and its described combat loop emphasizes firearms, squad commands, and squadmate AI. It is therefore the closest match for a ground shooter without a Jedi-centered premise.

Can I play Squadrons without a flight stick?

Yes. A controller or mouse and keyboard are supported options. HOTAS is an optional enthusiast setup for players who want a physical throttle-and-stick arrangement.

Is Squadrons single-player or multiplayer?

It has a single-player story as well as multiplayer 5v5 dogfights and fleet battles. The full game also supports VR, but VR is optional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Battlefront II completely free of Jedi combat?

No. It includes troopers, vehicles, starfighters, and a special-forces campaign, but it also includes iconic characters and hero combat. It is suitable only if you can avoid or tolerate that optional exposure.

Can I play The Old Republic as a non-Jedi?

Yes. You can choose a Bounty Hunter or another non-Jedi role. However, Jedi and Sith are central available classes, so the game is not appropriate for someone avoiding all Jedi-related content.

Which game is best for solo play?

Squadrons has a specifically identified single-player story. Republic Commando is the focused squad experience for ground combat, while Battlefront II also includes campaign content alongside its larger multiplayer battles.

Do these games have a universal current price?

No reliable universal price or inventory position applies across platforms and regions. Check the current retailer listing, edition, and format before buying, and treat optional HOTAS hardware as a separate expense.

Final recommendation

Choose Star Wars: Republic Commando for the best non-Jedi ground experience and Star Wars: Squadrons for the best non-Jedi space experience. Consider Battlefront II only when you want a large, varied battlefield and can avoid or tolerate its hero characters. Treat The Old Republic as a non-Jedi class option inside a broader Jedi-and-Sith role-playing game, not as a truly lightsaber-free choice.
