There is no single “best” WH-1000XM5 configuration. The right setup depends on how much outside sound you need, whether you prefer a neutral or shaped frequency balance, how often you talk while listening, and whether your streaming service supports 360 Reality Audio. Start with noise-control behavior, then adjust the equalizer and optional features that match those situations.
Sony’s current smartphone app is called Sony | Sound Connect; older Sony help pages and many owners still call it Headphones Connect. The menus described below are in that app. Sony provides no PC version. Settings changed on a phone can remain active when the headphones are later connected to a computer, while the exact menus and functions can vary by model. See Sony’s app documentation for the model-specific list of controls: Sony | Sound Connect.
Which WH-1000XM5 settings are worth changing first?
Use this as a starting map rather than a universal preset:
| Control | Change it when you want to… | Main decision |
|---|---|---|
| Noise canceling | Reduce the amount of surrounding sound reaching you | Best for focused listening when you do not need to monitor the environment |
| Ambient sound | Let more of the surroundings through | Best when awareness matters more than isolation |
| Equalizer | Alter the balance of vocals, bass, or treble | Choose by taste and program material, not by a claimed universal “best” preset |
| Speak-to-Chat | Pause or lower playback automatically when you speak | Useful for brief hands-free conversations; disable it if speech detection interrupts you |
| 360 Reality Audio | Use a personalized spatial profile with a compatible service | Relevant only when both your streaming app and content support it |
| DSEE | Try Sony’s optional sound-processing control | There is no established setting that is best for every source or listener |
| Quick Attention | Hear the surroundings immediately for a short exchange | Cover the entire right touch panel; it works only while covered |
The order matters: set the sound-around-you behavior for your environment, make any tonal adjustment with familiar music, and then decide whether automatic speech detection or spatial personalization belongs in your routine.

Before you change anything in the app
Use the current app name
Install or open Sony | Sound Connect on a phone and select the WH-1000XM5 when it appears. If a Sony article says “Headphones Connect,” it is referring to the older name of the same companion-app family. Labels can differ slightly by app release and device model, so use the device page as the source of truth for what your WH-1000XM5 exposes.
Do not look for a Windows or macOS companion app
Sony says there is no PC app. Make changes on the phone first. Afterward, the headphones can still use those configured behaviors when connected to a computer, but a computer connection does not provide the phone app’s controls. Sony also notes that available menus and functions vary by model, so an option missing from your screen is not necessarily a fault.
Check for updates from the device settings
Open the headphones’ device settings in Sound Connect and use its update prompt if one is offered. A Sony firmware search listing dated December 18, 2025 reports version 2.5.1 and says it requires Sound Connect 12.4.0 or later; treat that listing as a dated availability note, not a guarantee that it remains the newest release. Verify the version shown in your app before updating: Sony WH-1000XM5 firmware page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNoise canceling or ambient sound: choose by situation
Sony describes noise canceling as reducing ambient noise and ambient sound as allowing surrounding sound through. Neither mode is a permanent winner; the useful choice is the one that matches how much environmental information you need at that moment. Sony’s getting-started guidance explains these sound-around-you controls here: Get to know your new Headphones.
Choose noise canceling for concentration
Use noise canceling when your priority is fewer environmental sounds while listening. It is a sensible starting point for focused music, podcasts, or other playback in a consistently noisy setting. The control changes the amount of ambient sound you hear; it does not make every environment silent, and the evidence available for this guide does not establish a universal reduction percentage.

Choose ambient sound when awareness matters
Use ambient sound when you need to hear more of the room around you. This can be appropriate when someone may address you, when you need environmental awareness, or when you are moving between listening and conversation. Increase the ambient-sound setting only as far as your situation requires; a higher awareness setting can make the program you are playing less isolated.
A practical way to decide
- Ask whether you need to hear announcements, colleagues, or a nearby conversation without removing the headphones.
- If the answer is no, start with noise canceling.
- If the answer is yes, start with ambient sound and adjust it until voices and useful environmental cues are audible to you.
- Revisit the choice when the environment changes instead of treating one mode as your permanent default.
For a very short interruption, you may not need to open the app at all. The WH-1000XM5 has a touch shortcut called Quick Attention.
Quick Attention: the fastest temporary way to hear someone
Sony says covering the entire right touch sensor activates Quick Attention, which lets ambient sound through only while your hand remains over the panel. It is useful for a brief announcement or question when you do not want to change your saved sound-around-you setting. The touch-panel instructions, including the model-specific behavior, are documented by Sony: Using the Touch Sensor Control Panel.
How to use it
- Keep playback running.
- Place your hand over the whole right touch panel, not just a small portion of it.
- Listen while the panel is covered.
- Remove your hand to return to the previous sound behavior.
If it does not activate
- Cover the complete right sensor area rather than tapping it.
- Keep the panel covered continuously; Quick Attention is not a latched mode.
- If the touch panel still does not respond, use the app’s noise-control setting as the reliable alternative and check Sony’s touch-panel guidance for the current model behavior.
Equalizer: tune the balance to your ears
Sony describes the equalizer as a way to alter frequency balance, including the relative emphasis of vocals, bass, and treble. Presets and custom values are preference controls, not quality grades. A setting that makes a bass-heavy track enjoyable may obscure speech in a podcast, while a vocal-focused setting may sound thin on another recording.
A repeatable method for choosing a setting
- Open the WH-1000XM5 device page in Sound Connect and locate the equalizer control. The exact placement can change with the app version.
- Play a familiar track that contains vocals, low-frequency instruments, and high-frequency detail.
- Change one equalizer control at a time so you can identify what each adjustment does.
- Listen for several sections of the track rather than judging a change from a single moment.
- Repeat with the content you use most often, such as spoken audio or instrumental music.
- If the app offers a custom-save option, store the combination you prefer so you can return to it after trying another preset.
When to leave the equalizer flat
Keeping the default or neutral balance is sensible when you switch among many genres and do not want to compensate for one recording at the expense of another. It is also a useful reference point: return to it whenever you are unsure whether a change improved the sound or merely made it more pronounced.

Why there is no single best preset
Sony’s description supports adjustment for personal taste, but it does not establish one preset as optimal for all listeners, recordings, or sources. Treat online preset names as starting points only, and judge the result with your own content at a comfortable listening level. The app’s available equalizer choices and other personalization controls are listed in Sony’s Sound Connect documentation: Sony | Sound Connect.
Speak-to-Chat: useful automation or unwanted interruption?
Speak-to-Chat uses the headphones’ microphones to detect your voice, then lowers or pauses playback so you can talk. Sony’s WH-1000XM5 support guidance states, “In the factory setting, Speak-to-Chat is disabled.” It also warns that short or quiet speech may not be detected and that the mode closes after 30 seconds without detected speech. Those behaviors make it convenient for a quick exchange, but they also explain why some owners experience missed triggers or unexpected interruptions.
Turn Speak-to-Chat on
- Open Sony | Sound Connect and select My Device.
- Open Device settings.
- Choose Sound.
- Select Speak-to-Chat and enable it.
This is the documented WH-1000XM5 path in Sony’s support article: Using the Touch Sensor Control Panel.
When it earns a place in your routine
Enable it when you regularly need to answer a short question without touching the phone or removing the headphones. It is most useful when you are comfortable with playback being reduced as soon as the microphones recognize your speech.
Turn it off when detection is distracting
Disable the same My Device → Device settings → Sound → Speak-to-Chat control if the feature reacts to your own quiet comments, singing, throat-clearing, or other speech-like sounds, or if you prefer to control interruptions manually. Because Sony documents imperfect detection for brief or quiet speech, leaving it off is also reasonable when you cannot rely on it to catch every conversation.

360 Reality Audio: only if your service supports it
360 Reality Audio setup can create a hearing profile based on the shape of your ears, save that profile to the headphones, and connect it with supported streaming applications. It is an optional personalization workflow, not a general improvement that applies to every track or every music app.
Who should set it up
- Listeners who use a streaming service that explicitly supports 360 Reality Audio.
- Listeners who are willing to complete the ear-shape profile process and keep the supported service linked.
- Listeners who want to compare the service’s compatible spatial catalog with ordinary stereo playback.
Who can skip it
If your music service does not support 360 Reality Audio, or most of what you play is ordinary stereo content, the profile will not change those unsupported tracks. You can leave the feature alone and spend your setup time on noise control and equalization instead. Sony lists the app’s personalization capabilities and model limits here: Sony | Sound Connect.
DSEE: an optional control, not a guaranteed upgrade
Sony includes DSEE among the app’s personalization controls. The available WH-1000XM5 material does not establish one DSEE setting as best for every source, codec, or listener, and it does not provide a universal measurement of an audible improvement. Treat DSEE as an experiment you can keep only if you prefer what you hear with your own content.
A low-risk way to evaluate it
- Use a familiar recording and keep the volume and equalizer unchanged.
- Change only the DSEE option.
- Compare several sections, including vocals and quieter passages.
- Keep the setting if the result is consistently preferable; otherwise return to the previous value.
Do not use DSEE as a substitute for selecting the right noise-control mode or for fixing a recording that is itself poorly mixed.

|---|---|---|---|
| Focused work in a consistently noisy room | Noise canceling | Neutral EQ; Speak-to-Chat off if interruptions are unwanted | Prioritizes uninterrupted playback and avoids automatic pauses |
| Waiting for announcements or nearby people | Ambient sound | Choose an EQ that keeps speech intelligible to you | Awareness is more important than maximum isolation |
| Brief conversation while already listening | Keep your normal mode and use Quick Attention | Cover the whole right touch panel only for the exchange | Returns to the prior setting as soon as you uncover the panel |

| Mixed music and spoken audio | Whichever matches the environment | Start with a neutral EQ; save a custom alternative only after testing | One aggressive tonal change may not suit every source |
How to troubleshoot the settings
A control is missing
First confirm that Sound Connect is showing the WH-1000XM5 and that the phone app is current. Sony states that menus and functions vary by model, so a control documented for another model may not appear in exactly the same place. Do not install a PC utility expecting to expose it; Sony does not provide a PC app.
Changes made on the phone are not obvious on the computer
Reconnect the headphones to the phone, confirm the desired value in the device page, and then reconnect to the computer. Sony says phone-configured settings can carry over when the headphones are connected to a PC, but the computer itself will not display the Sound Connect controls.
Speak-to-Chat does nothing
Check that it is enabled at My Device → Device settings → Sound → Speak-to-Chat. Speak clearly enough for the microphones to detect you; Sony specifically notes that short or quiet speech may not trigger the feature. If no speech is detected, the mode closes after 30 seconds.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Speak-to-Chat activates when you do not want it
Turn it off at the same path. For a single planned conversation, use Quick Attention instead so the temporary ambient-sound change is controlled by your hand rather than speech detection.
Quick Attention does not work
Cover the entire right touch sensor and keep it covered. A tap or partial touch is not the documented gesture, and the effect ends when the panel is uncovered. If the shortcut remains unreliable, change ambient sound in the app for that listening session.
360 Reality Audio setup has no effect
Verify that the streaming application and the specific content support 360 Reality Audio. The hearing profile is linked to supported services; it is not applied universally to every music app or ordinary stereo track.
A maintenance routine that keeps the setup predictable
- Open Sound Connect occasionally and check whether the WH-1000XM5 has an available firmware or app update.
- After an update, review noise control, ambient sound, EQ, Speak-to-Chat, and any spatial-audio profile you use; labels or available functions can change by model and app version.
- Keep one neutral or familiar EQ setting as a reference before experimenting with custom values.
- Use Quick Attention for one-off conversations instead of repeatedly changing your saved ambient-sound preference.
- Reconsider Speak-to-Chat whenever your listening context changes from casual conversation to uninterrupted work.
For the official model-specific controls and current software information, use Sony’s WH-1000XM5 support pages rather than assuming that a setting described for another headphone model will be available.
