The best first changes are functional, not cosmetic: make the launcher your default Home app, set a readable grid and icon scale, simplify the dock and app drawer, choose browsing or search-first navigation, then add only a few gestures, icons, widgets, and permissions. Doing those in that order prevents you from rebuilding the home screen after a layout change.
Open-source launchers do not share one design philosophy. Lawnchair follows a Pixel-like home-screen model, Kvaesitso is search-first, Olauncher uses text and gestures, Fossify emphasizes widgets and customization, and Victoria uses an alphabetical list. The right settings depend on how you retrieve apps, how much control you want, and which Android permissions you accept.
Before you change settings
Install the launcher from its project-approved distribution channel and open it once. Feature names, permission prompts, release channels, and Android behavior can differ by launcher version, phone manufacturer, and Android release. Keep your existing launcher available until the replacement is stable, and note how to return to it through Android’s Home-app setting.

- Have the launcher installed and opened at least once.
- Know your phone’s Android version; some features are version-dependent.
- Keep a few minutes available to test Home, Back, the app drawer, widgets, and notification gestures before removing the previous launcher.
- If your phone uses aggressive background management, be prepared to exempt the launcher after testing for resets or missed actions.
1. Set the new launcher as the default Home app
Do this before arranging pages. Android only shows the replacement when the Home button or home gesture is routed to it.

- Open Settings.
- Open the section named Apps, Default apps, or a similarly named system-app page.
- Choose Home app or Default Home app.
- Select the open-source launcher.
- Press the Home button or swipe up from the navigation area. Confirm that the new launcher appears every time.
Manufacturers use different labels and menu locations, so search Android Settings for “Home app” if the option is not immediately visible. If Android keeps returning to the old launcher, repeat this check before changing any launcher layout.
2. Choose the grid, icon scale, labels, and spacing
Grid decisions affect every page, folder, and widget. Set them before placing many items.
Pick a grid for reachability
Start with the number of columns and rows that lets your thumb reach frequent apps without crowding labels. A denser grid fits more apps but makes labels and touch targets harder to distinguish; a wider layout is easier to scan but may force more pages. Use the launcher preview or edit mode to check both one-handed reach and empty space.
Set icon size and labels together
Adjust icon scale, label visibility, and label spacing as a group. Large icons with labels can make a sparse grid feel crowded, while small icons without labels can slow recognition. Add a second home page rather than shrinking icons below a comfortable size.
Test the layout with a widget
Place one representative widget temporarily. If it forces unexpected gaps or pushes key apps outside your reach, change the grid now. Lawnchair documents controls for grid size, icon size, labels, folders, and page layout in its Home Settings guide.
3. Simplify the dock, folders, and app drawer
Keep only repeat-use apps in the dock
The dock is visible on every page, so reserve it for actions you perform daily. Remove duplicates and apps that are easy to reach from the first page. A shorter dock can make the screen calmer and leaves room for a search bar or gesture target, depending on the launcher.

Use folders for stable categories
Create folders only for groups that are unlikely to change, such as banking, travel, or work tools. If a folder contains dozens of apps, it becomes a second app drawer and defeats the purpose. Give each folder a short, recognizable name and test opening it with one hand.
Configure the app drawer for retrieval
Choose whether installed apps are sorted alphabetically, by category, or through a search field when the launcher offers those choices. Check whether the drawer opens with a swipe, a button, or a keyboard shortcut. The fastest arrangement is the one that matches your memory: visual browsing favors pages and folders; name-based retrieval favors search or an alphabetical list.
4. Decide between conventional browsing and search-first navigation
This is the most consequential behavioral choice after setting the default Home app.
Conventional home screen
Lawnchair presents a familiar home-screen model with pages, a configurable search bar, a dock, folders, widgets, and gestures. Its official guide describes it as “an open-source Android home screen app based on the clean design of the Pixel Launcher” (LawnchairLauncher.com, July 20, 2026). Choose this model if you remember where an app lives or want widgets and visual shortcuts on the first screen.
Search-first home screen
Kvaesitso is built around querying rather than browsing. Its guide documents labels, tags, filters, quick actions, and widgets, and says that “Apps and other search results can be customized individually” (Kvaesitso user guide, accessed October 16, 2026). Give apps useful labels and tags, then test searches for people, settings, and actions you use often. Its FAQ states that wallpaper blur requires Android 12 or newer, battery saver disabled, and a device that supports cross-window blur; it also says the project probably will not be available on the Play Store. Treat those as current project statements, not universal Android requirements.

Olauncher is characterized by text-and-gesture minimalism, while Victoria is characterized by an alphabetical-list interface. These approaches can reduce visual clutter, but they change how you launch an app. Try opening five frequently used apps and one rarely used app before committing to a full migration.

5. Add only the gestures you will remember
Gestures are powerful because they remove visible controls, but too many create accidental launches and conflicts with Android navigation.
A practical starting set
- Assign one swipe to open notifications.
- Assign one other gesture to open the app drawer or your most frequent launcher action.
- Add a double-tap only if you can perform it reliably without triggering it while tapping icons.
- Leave two-finger or less-common gestures disabled until the basic pair feels automatic.
Lawnchair documents swipe up, swipe down, double tap, and two-finger actions. The available actions can vary by version, device, and granted permissions. Android’s system navigation may also claim the same edge or swipe, so test gestures from the center and edges of the screen.

- Open the launcher’s gesture settings and confirm an action is assigned.
- Check whether the gesture requires notification access, accessibility access, or another Android permission.
- Try a different gesture direction that does not overlap the system’s Back or Home gesture.
- Test with the phone’s current navigation mode; switching between three-button and gesture navigation can change available areas.
6. Tune appearance and icons after behavior is stable
Set theme and color first
Choose light or dark mode and the launcher’s color treatment only after the grid and navigation model work. This prevents a visual change from hiding a layout problem.
Choose icon shape and pack
Set a consistent icon shape and, if supported, an installed icon pack. Check several categories, including apps that do not provide a themed icon. Mixed icon styles are easier to tolerate when labels remain visible.
Use individual overrides sparingly
Kvaesitso documents support for original icons, transformed legacy icons, installed icon packs, themed icons, placeholders, labels, and tags. Override only icons that are difficult to recognize; excessive one-off substitutions make future maintenance harder. If a pack leaves blank or mismatched icons, revert that individual icon rather than changing the entire grid.

7. Add widgets and approve optional permissions deliberately
Give each widget a job
Add a widget only when it replaces a repeated trip into an app or exposes information you need at a glance. Calendar, weather, timers, and media controls are common examples, but the useful choice depends on your routine. Place the most important widget on the first screen and move decorative widgets to a secondary page.

Widget binding, status-bar controls, notification access, accessibility features, and device-admin actions can require Android permissions. Approve only the capability that matches a feature you intend to use. If a widget is missing or a gesture fails, revisit the permission page rather than assuming the launcher is broken.
Read the project’s privacy statement
Fossify’s privacy policy, effective July 12, 2026, states: “Fossify Launcher does not request Android’s Internet permission.” The same policy says it contains no advertising and does not track users. That is a statement about Fossify’s documented permission and policy posture, not a privacy score for every open-source launcher. Review the specific project’s policy and Android permission list before granting optional access.

Verify Home-app persistence
Restart the phone once and press Home. If the old launcher returns, reselect the new launcher under Android’s default Home setting. Some devices also reset defaults after an update or when an app is force-stopped.
Review battery and background restrictions
If the launcher disappears, reloads its layout, or stops responding after the screen has been off, check the phone’s battery or background-activity controls. Disable overly aggressive restrictions for the launcher where your device requires it, then test another sleep-and-wake cycle. Lawnchair’s documentation specifically calls out battery settings as a reliability check.
Retest permissions after updates
Android or the launcher can revoke, rename, or change optional access after an update. Recheck notification access, accessibility, widget binding, and any status-bar permission when a previously working function stops.

A first-day setup checklist
- Set the launcher as the default Home app and confirm Home works.
- Choose columns, rows, icon scale, labels, and spacing.
- Place one temporary widget to validate the grid.
- Reduce the dock to daily-use apps and create only stable folders.
- Choose browsing, search-first, text-and-gesture, or list navigation.
- Assign one notification gesture and one drawer or high-frequency action.
- Set theme, colors, icon shape, and pack; correct individual icons as needed.
- Add essential widgets and grant only the permissions they require.
- Restart the phone, test Home, drawer, widgets, and gestures, and adjust battery restrictions if necessary.
How to choose settings for your habits
If you remember locations
Use a conventional grid, a small dock, and folders for stable categories. Keep labels visible until muscle memory develops, then remove them only where the icons remain unambiguous.
If you remember names or actions
Use a search-first launcher or a prominent search bar. Invest time in labels, tags, filters, and quick actions instead of filling several pages with shortcuts.
If you want a quiet screen
Use text-and-gesture or list navigation, disable nonessential widgets, and keep one predictable gesture for notifications. Verify that the reduced visual interface still exposes an obvious path to every installed app.

If customization is the priority
Choose a launcher with documented grid, icon, widget, and gesture controls. Change one visual layer at a time so you can identify which setting caused a spacing, icon, or performance problem.
Common failure modes and fixes
The launcher never appears after pressing Home
Return to Android Settings and select it under Home app or Default Home app. If the selection is not retained after reboot, check for a device-management policy or battery restriction that is stopping the launcher.
The layout looks wrong after adding a widget
Remove the widget temporarily, restore the grid and icon spacing, then add the widget again at a size that fits. Do not shrink every icon to accommodate one oversized widget.
Search results are noisy
Use the launcher’s per-result controls, labels, tags, or filters where available. Remove duplicate labels and test the exact terms you normally use rather than generic categories.

A gesture conflicts with Android navigation
Change the gesture direction or use a visible drawer/search control. Recheck the phone’s navigation mode and required permissions, then test from several parts of the screen.
Wallpaper blur is unavailable in Kvaesitso
Confirm Android 12 or newer, turn off battery saver, and check whether the device supports cross-window blur. Those conditions are stated in Kvaesitso’s FAQ; if the hardware does not support the effect, choose a solid or unblurred wallpaper instead.
