There is no single best preset for every Star Wars game, console, monitor, or player. Start with settings that affect whether you can read, hear, control, and comfortably tolerate the game, then choose difficulty and tune graphics on your own hardware. The menu names and available options vary by title: the examples below use Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Star Wars Outlaws only where those games document a specific feature.

What to change before you start playing

Pause as soon as the first settings screen appears. A good first pass takes only a few minutes and prevents the most common problems: unreadable dialogue, controls that fight your muscle memory, a difficulty level that makes every encounter frustrating, or camera effects that cause discomfort. Change one group of settings at a time, test it in a safe area, and keep a note of what you changed so you can undo it.

The order matters. Readability and accessibility affect every scene, while graphics options are easiest to judge after you have seen the game on your own display. Begin with text, audio, controls, comfort, and challenge. Tune image quality and performance last.

A quick first-boot checklist

  • Turn dialogue subtitles on if you need or prefer them.
  • Increase subtitle, caption, or HUD size until it is comfortable from your normal seating distance.
  • Confirm the control layout, stick sensitivity, inversion, and hold-versus-toggle choices.
  • Select a difficulty and enable any combat, navigation, or minigame assists you want.
  • Reduce camera shake, camera sway, or motion blur if they make the image uncomfortable.
  • Choose an audio output and balance dialogue, effects, and music.
  • Only then compare performance and visual-quality modes on your actual platform and display.

1. Make dialogue, captions, and the HUD readable

Small text is the setting most likely to make an otherwise excellent game tiring. Open the accessibility, display, or interface menu and look for dialogue subtitles, closed captions, sound-effect captions, subtitle scale, text size, and HUD scale. Turn on only the caption types that help you: dialogue subtitles may be enough for some players, while sound-effect captions can identify an off-screen alarm, enemy, or environmental cue.

  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

Do not assume that the largest text value is automatically best. Increase the size, play for several minutes, and check whether lines wrap awkwardly, cover the action, or disappear too quickly. The right value depends on your screen size, resolution, viewing distance, and eyesight. If a game offers separate subtitle and HUD controls, adjust them independently rather than enlarging every interface element.

What the documented examples offer

Jedi: Survivor documents subtitle and caption controls among its accessibility options. Its menus also include HUD-related choices. Star Wars Outlaws describes larger subtitles and text-to-speech as part of its accessibility settings. These examples show why you should inspect the menu instead of expecting a common Star Wars preset; another title may use different labels or omit a feature.

2. Set controls and sensitivity before learning bad habits

Check the default button layout before the tutorial teaches you a sequence you will later have to unlearn. Verify movement, camera, attack, block, dodge, interact, ability, and menu inputs. If the game supports remapping, put frequently used actions where your hand can reach them without releasing the movement stick. Players with limited dexterity may benefit from moving a difficult button, using an alternative input, or replacing a required hold with a toggle.

Review right- and left-stick sensitivity, aiming or camera acceleration, dead-zone controls if present, and axis inversion. Make a small change, walk and rotate the camera, then fight a low-risk enemy. A very high sensitivity can make precise parries or navigation harder; a very low value can force large hand movements. There is no universally correct number, so judge the speed by whether you can stop the reticle or camera where intended.

Hold versus toggle

Look for separate options for sprint, crouch, aim, guard, scan, and accessibility actions. A toggle reduces the time you must hold a trigger, but it can also leave an action active when you meant to release it. Try the setting during ordinary movement and one combat encounter before committing.

Platform-specific control notes

The PlayStation listing for the PS5 edition of Jedi: Survivor describes basic remapping and stick-sensitivity accessibility features. Electronic Arts also documents extensive remapping and related controls for the game more broadly. The exact controls and menu path can differ between PC and console editions, so use the labels shown on your platform.

3. Choose difficulty and gameplay assists for the experience you want

Difficulty is not a test of commitment; it is a pacing and learning choice. Pick the level that lets you pay attention to exploration, story, or combat without turning every encounter into a wall. If a game lets you change difficulty later, you can start lower while learning its timing and raise it once the controls feel natural. Conversely, lowering difficulty is a practical way to continue a story after a repeated fight becomes a barrier.

Before leaving the menu, look for targeted assists. They may affect combat timing, navigation, puzzles, or minigames without changing the entire game. Read each description carefully: an assist may slow a sequence, enlarge a timing window, simplify a task, or provide additional guidance.

Jedi: Survivor

Electronic Arts says Jedi: Survivor allows difficulty changes outside combat without changing rewards. That makes it reasonable to adjust between encounters rather than during a fight. Its documented accessibility options also include gameplay modifiers and a slow mode. Because the game may require an up-to-date version for all accessibility options, install available updates before concluding that a setting is missing.

Star Wars Outlaws

StarWars.com describes Story, Regular, and Hard choices that change player health and enemy difficulty. It also identifies options for lockpicking, slicing, and piloting challenges. If you enjoy combat but dislike a particular minigame, a targeted option can address that problem without lowering every enemy’s strength.

4. Reduce motion effects that cause discomfort

Motion comfort is personal and display-dependent. Inspect the menu for camera shake, ambient camera sway, motion blur, field of view, a stabilizing screen aid, color adjustments, and high-contrast options. Disable or reduce one effect at a time, then move through a corridor and perform a camera turn. The goal is a stable, readable image, not a prescribed “correct” combination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Camera shake and sway

Camera shake can sell an explosion or heavy strike but may make the view difficult to track. Ambient sway can create a constant floating motion even when nothing is happening. If either causes nausea, headaches, or eye strain, lower it or turn it off first. Jedi: Survivor lists camera shake and ambient camera sway among its visual options.

Motion blur and field of view

Motion blur softens rapid turns. Some players find that cinematic; others find it smears detail. Compare a quick camera rotation with blur on and off. Field of view changes how much of the scene fits on screen: a wider view can show more at the edges but may make objects appear smaller or introduce distortion, while a narrower view enlarges the center of the image. Increase or decrease it gradually and test traversal as well as combat.

Stabilizing aids, color, and contrast

A stabilizing UI dot or similar center-screen aid can reduce discomfort for players affected by camera movement. Color profiles and high-contrast modes can improve the separation between characters, hazards, and interface elements. Choose a profile that preserves information you need; a dramatic color shift is not useful if it hides environmental clues.

5. Compare performance and visual quality on your own hardware

Only after text, controls, challenge, and comfort feel right should you tune graphics. If the game offers a performance mode and a visual-quality mode, play the same short section in each on your actual console or PC and display. Check camera pans, combat effects, distant detail, and busy areas rather than judging from a static menu.

  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.

In Jedi: Survivor, Electronic Arts describes performance mode as limiting resolution to 1080p to increase frame rate. That is a documented trade-off for that game and version, not proof that every Star Wars title or every “performance” label uses 1080p. The same documentation lists graphics-quality controls, while the PC first-boot resource lists ray tracing. Whether those options are available, and how they behave, depends on the edition and hardware.

A practical comparison table

Choice What to inspect When it may suit you What is not established universally
Performance mode Motion during turns, combat, and traversal; any resolution reduction You value smoother response and your display makes the lower detail acceptable A universal frame-rate target or resolution; labels differ by game
Visual-quality mode Fine detail, lighting, reflections, and image stability You prefer sharper or richer imagery and can accept the mode’s response That it will run at a particular frame rate on every platform
Ray tracing or advanced effects Lighting and reflections versus responsiveness Your PC or console supports the feature and the visual change matters to you That every edition includes the option or that it improves playability

Brightness, view distance, and similar controls should be adjusted against the room where you play. Avoid raising brightness until dark scenes look gray; use the game’s calibration image when it provides one. If an update changes performance or adds accessibility options, revisit the comparison instead of assuming your old choice still applies.

6. Balance audio, output, and hearing-related options

Open the audio menu before the first major fight. Set the selected output device correctly, then balance dialogue, effects, and music so spoken instructions remain intelligible during combat. A separate dialogue slider is useful when effects overwhelm speech. If the game provides dynamic-range or mono options, choose the one that matches your speakers, headphones, and hearing needs.

Jedi: Survivor documents dialogue, effects, and music controls as well as audio-output selection. Do not assume a headset is required: the correct output is the device you are actually using. If you move from headphones to a television or receiver, check the output again and lower the volume before testing loud effects.

  1. Open settings at the first safe opportunity. Pause before the tutorial becomes difficult. If the game has a separate accessibility menu, inspect it as well as display and controls.
  2. Set readability. Enable the subtitles or captions you want, adjust subtitle and HUD scale, and test a long line of dialogue from your normal seating distance.
  3. Confirm input. Check the layout, remap essential actions, set inversion if needed, and choose an initial sensitivity. Test walking, camera movement, and one basic attack.
  4. Choose challenge. Select a starting difficulty and read the descriptions of combat, navigation, and minigame assists. Enable only the aids that solve a problem you actually have.
  5. Stabilize the image. Reduce camera shake, sway, or blur if they cause discomfort. Adjust field of view and any stabilizing aid in small steps.
  6. Set sound. Select the output device and balance dialogue, effects, and music at a safe listening level.
  7. Test a representative scene. Use movement, exploration, a fight, and a menu or minigame. A setting that feels good in a corridor may feel wrong during combat.
  8. Tune graphics last. Compare the available modes on your own display, then keep the option that best matches your preference for smoothness, detail, and responsiveness.

8. What the two documented games show about menu differences

The examples below are not a universal specification for Star Wars games. They illustrate how to translate a menu into a decision.

Game and context Documented options or guidance How to apply it
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (PC and console documentation) Subtitles and captions; HUD and visual controls; remapping; stick-related controls; camera shake and ambient sway; motion blur; field of view; color profiles; stabilizing UI dot; audio output and separate dialogue controls; gameplay modifiers and slow mode; performance mode described as 1080p for increased frame rate; PC ray-tracing and other first-boot graphics choices Inspect each category, make small changes, and compare performance and quality on your edition. An up-to-date game may be needed for every accessibility option.
Star Wars Outlaws Accessibility settings including larger subtitles and text-to-speech; Story, Regular, and Hard choices affecting player health and enemy difficulty; options for lockpicking, slicing, and piloting challenges Choose the broad difficulty for combat, then use targeted challenge options for activities that do not match your preferences.
Jedi: Survivor on PS5 The PlayStation listing describes basic remapping and stick-sensitivity accessibility features for that edition Use the PS5 menu labels rather than assuming the PC control list is identical.

These documented differences are why copying a settings guide from another game can mislead you. A title may move an option to a different submenu, give it a different name, or omit it entirely.

9. How to decide between competing settings

When two options both sound attractive, compare them against five concrete axes rather than asking which is “best.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Axis Question to ask Useful test
Readability Can you read dialogue, identify icons, and see hazards without leaning forward? Read several subtitle lines and inspect a dark scene.
Input comfort Can you reach required actions without strain or accidental presses? Walk, rotate, dodge, and perform a repeated combat action.
Challenge Does the game demand attention without blocking progress? Try a normal encounter and a difficult one; note whether failure teaches or merely repeats.
Motion comfort Does the camera remain stable enough for a longer session? Traverse, turn quickly, and watch a combat animation.
Image quality versus smoothness Do you notice detail more than response, or response more than detail? Compare the same scene in each mode on your display.

These are preference-based decisions. The available documentation establishes that the settings exist and, in the case of Jedi: Survivor performance mode, identifies a resolution-for-frame-rate trade-off; it does not establish a universal winner.

10. Troubleshoot the most common first-boot problems

The subtitles are still hard to read

  • Increase subtitle scale separately from HUD scale if the game allows it.
  • Enable a background, speaker name, or sound-effect caption option when available.
  • Move closer to the display or change the display’s own text or picture settings rather than enlarging every game element.
  • Check whether an update is required for the accessibility menu to expose all options.

The camera makes you feel sick

  • Lower camera shake and ambient sway first.
  • Turn off motion blur and test a moderate field-of-view change.
  • Enable a stabilizing center-screen aid if offered.
  • Stop when symptoms begin; comfort is a valid reason to pause and change settings, not something to push through.

You cannot aim or turn accurately

  • Reduce sensitivity in small increments and test after each change.
  • Check for inverted axes or acceleration that conflicts with your expectations.
  • Review dead-zone controls if present and confirm the correct controller profile.
  • Remap an action that is causing hand strain instead of compensating with extreme sensitivity.

Dialogue disappears under explosions or music

  • Raise the dialogue slider or lower effects and music.
  • Confirm the selected output device after changing from headphones to speakers.
  • Use a dynamic-range or mono option if it better suits your equipment or hearing needs.

The game looks sharp but feels sluggish

  • Compare the available performance mode with visual quality in the same section.
  • Check whether advanced effects such as ray tracing are enabled on PC.
  • Confirm that your display is using the intended input mode and that the game is running the edition you think it is.
  • Do not assume that a mode label guarantees a particular frame rate; judge the response on your hardware.

11. Mistakes to avoid

  • Copying a preset from another title. Menu names, defaults, and features differ even between Star Wars games.
  • Maxing every slider. Larger text, wider field of view, higher sensitivity, and stronger contrast can each create new problems when pushed too far.
  • Changing several categories at once. If the result feels worse, you will not know which change caused it.
  • Judging graphics from a menu screenshot. Motion, combat effects, and dark scenes reveal trade-offs that a static image hides.
  • Treating difficulty as permanent. Check the game’s rules; Jedi: Survivor, for example, allows changes outside combat without changing rewards.
  • Assuming every accessibility option is present immediately. Some titles require an up-to-date installation for the complete set of options.
  • Buying hardware before checking settings. Electronic Arts recommends a controller for Jedi: Survivor on PC, but that is a game-and-platform-specific recommendation, not a requirement for every player or Star Wars game. Keyboard-and-mouse players and console owners should use the input method that is comfortable for them.

12. Revisit settings after you understand the game

The first pass is a starting point, not a contract. Recheck controls after the tutorial introduces abilities, because a remap that worked for basic attacks may become awkward when several abilities share the same hand. Recheck difficulty after you know the combat timing. Recheck audio and subtitles when you change rooms, displays, or output devices.

Keep graphics changes separate from gameplay changes. If an update adds an accessibility option or alters performance, compare the relevant modes again. Save a short note such as “lower sensitivity one step, blur off, dialogue plus two” so you can restore a comfortable setup after experimenting.

For a new Star Wars game, the most reliable optimization is therefore personal and staged: make the game readable, make the controls comfortable, choose a sustainable challenge, remove troublesome motion, balance sound, and only then decide how much image quality you want to trade for smoothness. The documented settings in Jedi: Survivor and Outlaws provide useful examples, but your own title and platform determine the final menu and result.
