The safest baseline for a self-hosted VPN is a firewall-enforced, fail-closed kill switch; an explicit choice between full-tunnel and documented split-tunnel routing; a DNS policy that follows the same path as the traffic it protects; and risk-based rotation and revocation of peer keys or client certificates. A switch in a VPN app is only a request to change routes. The firewall must block ordinary egress whenever the tunnel, expected routes, or health checks are missing.

What the secure baseline looks like

A self-hosted VPN is a collection of routing, firewall, DNS, and identity controls. A secure deployment makes each control explicit instead of assuming that connecting a tunnel automatically protects every packet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Fail closed: the client may reach only the VPN server’s transport endpoint until the tunnel is up, and ordinary outbound traffic is denied if the tunnel disappears.
  • Defined routing scope: a full tunnel carries all client IP traffic through the VPN; a split tunnel carries only selected private networks, domains, or applications.
  • DNS follows policy: DNS requests use a resolver reachable through the intended path, with no unplanned fallback to a local or public resolver.
  • Identity lifecycle: WireGuard peer keys or OpenVPN client certificates are replaced and revoked when a device, user, or key can no longer be trusted.
  • Recovery is tested: boot, reconnect, Wi-Fi changes, IPv6, server outages, and client sleep/wake are treated as security transitions, not edge cases.

The right settings depend on the operating system, firewall, client versions, server topology, and threat model. There is no single universal kill-switch rule or key-rotation interval that is safe for every installation.

Build a firewall-enforced kill switch

A kill switch is a firewall and routing policy that fails closed when the VPN interface is absent or unusable. It should continue to work when a client pauses, resumes, reconnects, changes networks, or loses the server. OpenVPN’s manual describes keeping the tunnel interface and its routes persistent, but also warns that full leak protection requires additional route and firewall rules.

Allow only the VPN transport before the tunnel exists

Start with a default-deny outbound policy. Permit the client to contact only the configured VPN server address and transport port over the protocol you actually use. Permit required local functions, such as DHCP or a locally managed network service, only when your threat model requires them. Do not allow unrestricted internet traffic merely because the VPN client is attempting to reconnect.

Once the tunnel interface is established, allow client traffic through that interface and deny ordinary egress through Wi-Fi, Ethernet, cellular, or other physical interfaces. On a self-hosted gateway, allow forwarding from VPN clients to the destinations you intend to provide, and apply NAT or a routed upstream gateway only on the approved egress interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the policy depend on the tunnel, not an application toggle

A graphical “kill switch” setting can fail during an application crash, a route replacement, a pause/resume transition, or a race between interface creation and route installation. The enforcement point should be the host firewall and, where applicable, the VPN gateway firewall. Match traffic by interface, destination, and state so that packets cannot escape simply because a process stopped reporting its status.

Health checks can supplement the policy, but they must not be the only control. If a check cannot reach the server, the safe result is to remove ordinary egress, not to restore the physical interface’s default route. Keep the VPN transport exception narrow enough that it cannot become a general bypass.

Handle IPv6 deliberately

An IPv4-only ruleset can still leak traffic over IPv6. Choose one of two defensible approaches: carry IPv6 through the VPN and enforce equivalent routes and firewall rules, or disable IPv6 on the client and network interfaces as a deliberate, documented decision. Do not assume that blocking IPv4 is sufficient. Test both A and AAAA connections while the tunnel is up and during a forced disconnect.

Test every transition that can remove protection

  1. Start the device with the VPN client stopped. Confirm that ordinary internet connections fail and that only the VPN transport endpoint is reachable.
  2. Connect the VPN and verify that the expected tunnel interface, routes, and DNS settings appear.
  3. Pause the client, stop its process, and force a reconnect. Confirm that traffic is blocked during each gap.
  4. Change from Wi-Fi to Ethernet or cellular, and repeat the test while the network address changes.
  5. Power off or disconnect the VPN server. Confirm that the client does not fall back to its local default route.
  6. Repeat all tests for IPv6, including AAAA lookups and direct IPv6 connections.

OpenVPN documents pause, resume, and reconnect states in which the tunnel can be temporarily disengaged. The firewall must therefore enforce the fail-closed state independently of the client’s displayed connection status.

Choose full-tunnel or split-tunnel routing

Use a full tunnel when the VPN must inspect, filter, or centrally log all internet traffic. Use a split tunnel when only internal networks need protection and retaining local internet access is intentional. Neither choice is automatically safer: a full tunnel increases central control and server responsibility, while a split tunnel increases the number of paths you must document and monitor.

Decision Full tunnel Split tunnel
Traffic scope All client IP traffic uses the VPN’s default route. Only selected private networks, domains, or applications use the VPN.
Typical OpenVPN policy redirect-gateway or an equivalent default-route rule. redirect-private or explicit routes; per-user and per-group overrides are supported by Access Server.
Server duties NAT or a routed internet gateway, filtering, logging, and DNS service. Routes to protected networks, plus DNS handling for internal names.
Local internet Normally unavailable outside the VPN path while the tunnel is enforced. Remains local for excluded destinations by design.
Main failure risk A misconfigured gateway or DNS service can interrupt all internet access. An omitted route, DNS exception, or IPv6 path can bypass intended protection.

When full tunnel is the better fit

Choose full tunnel for unmanaged or high-risk networks, centralized web filtering, compliance logging, or a policy that requires every destination to pass through a known gateway. OpenVPN’s routing guide states that pushing redirect-gateway causes all IP network traffic originating on clients to pass through the OpenVPN server. That statement describes routing; it does not by itself provide internet access. The server must forward the traffic, perform NAT when the upstream network requires it, and provide a reachable DNS service.

Before enabling it for users, verify the server’s upstream route, forwarding rules, NAT behavior, MTU, and capacity. A full tunnel also carries traffic to local services that users may expect to reach directly, so define exceptions deliberately rather than adding ad-hoc bypasses after deployment.

When split tunnel is the better fit

Choose split tunnel when users need protected access to private subnets but should keep local access to ordinary internet services, printers, or latency-sensitive local systems. Define every protected network and every excluded network. On OpenVPN, redirect-private can express private-network routing without replacing the public default route. With WireGuard, the equivalent scope is represented by the peer’s allowed address set and explicit routes.

Split routing is not “VPN only for a few websites” unless you have a reliable, maintained way to classify those destinations. IP addresses change, applications use multiple endpoints, and dual-stack services may use IPv6 unexpectedly. Prefer stable private subnets or controlled domain-routing mechanisms, and review the list whenever an internal service changes.

Stop DNS leaks in both routing modes

DNS is a separate leak surface. A client can send application traffic through the VPN while still asking a local router, ISP resolver, or public fallback resolver for names. Decide the DNS policy before choosing routes.

Three defensible DNS policies

  • All DNS through the VPN: push or configure a resolver reachable through the tunnel and block DNS traffic to other interfaces. This is the clearest choice for full tunnel and for environments that need central filtering or logging.
  • Selected internal domains through the VPN: route internal search domains to a private resolver while leaving public DNS local. This fits split tunnel when internal names must resolve privately but local browsing should remain local. OpenVPN’s iOS documentation describes split-tunnel behavior that can send all DNS to pushed servers or only selected search domains.
  • Fail-closed DNS: allow DNS only to approved resolvers and block all fallback resolvers whenever the tunnel or the approved path is unavailable. This avoids silently changing from protected to unprotected name resolution.

Configure and verify DNS as a path, not just an address

Make sure the pushed resolver’s address is reachable through the tunnel in full mode. In split mode, ensure the internal resolver route and the search-domain rules agree; otherwise a query may leave through the local network or return an unintended public result. Block or redirect outbound DNS on the physical interfaces according to your operating system’s resolver architecture, and account for encrypted DNS features that may create their own endpoint.

Test all of the following while connected and disconnected:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A records for a public name and an internal name.
  • AAAA records and a direct IPv6 connection.
  • Short names that depend on a search domain.
  • Resolver behavior after the VPN server is unreachable.
  • Fallback behavior after sleep, roaming, and network changes.

A DNS test that checks only an A record can miss an IPv6 leak. A browser test that checks only the displayed public address can miss private internal names being sent to an external resolver.

Rotate and revoke VPN identities

Key rotation has two different meanings. WireGuard automatically derives short-lived session keys during handshakes; the protocol documentation says that a handshake occurs every few minutes to provide rotating keys for perfect forward secrecy. That protects sessions, but it does not replace rotation of the long-lived peer keypair that identifies a device. OpenVPN similarly requires lifecycle management for the client certificates and the certificate authority that signs them.

WireGuard peer-key procedure

  1. Generate a new keypair on the device that will use it, or in a protected provisioning system. Do not transmit the private key through ordinary chat, email, or an unencrypted ticket.
  2. Add the replacement public key and its exact allowed addresses to the server configuration, checking for overlap with the old peer.
  3. Install the new private key and peer settings on the device through a protected channel.
  4. Activate the replacement and verify a successful handshake, expected routes, and DNS behavior.
  5. Remove the old public key from the server immediately after the replacement is confirmed, or at the same time when the old key is suspected to be compromised.
  6. Record the change, owner, device, and revocation reason so that an unknown key cannot be mistaken for an active one later.

Rotate immediately when a device is lost or sold, a private key may have been copied, a user leaves or changes role, an administrator account is compromised, or a peer’s ownership is uncertain. For routine rotation, choose an interval based on device risk, exposure, staffing, and the time required to distribute and verify replacements. There is no authoritative universal interval; a schedule that cannot be completed reliably is not safer than a documented, risk-based process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OpenVPN certificate and CA procedure

For OpenVPN, replace client certificates through the certificate authority process and revoke the old certificate when its device or user is no longer trusted. Keep the CA private key off the VPN server, preferably offline or on a separate protected system. A server compromise should not automatically give an attacker the ability to mint trusted client certificates.

Harden the OpenVPN configuration with tls-auth, strong AES settings appropriate to the supported client versions, stronger Diffie–Hellman parameters, and UDP where it is suitable for your network and policy. Drop privileges after startup when the platform and deployment allow it. These controls reduce exposure, but they do not replace certificate revocation, private-key protection, or firewall enforcement.

WireGuard or OpenVPN for a self-hosted deployment?

Axis WireGuard OpenVPN
Cryptography Fixed modern suite: ChaCha20-Poly1305, Curve25519, BLAKE2s, SipHash24, and HKDF. Configurable cryptography and certificate-based TLS; available choices depend on client and server versions.
Operational model Small peer configuration and public-key identity; session keys rotate during handshakes. Certificate authority, client certificates, revocation, TLS settings, and more configuration surface.
Audit and hardening Fewer cryptographic choices simplify review. Flexibility supports established certificate infrastructure but increases hardening work.
Routing control Allowed addresses and explicit routes define each peer’s scope. Push options such as redirect-gateway and redirect-private, with per-user or per-group policy in Access Server.
Best deciding factors Client support, simple peer lifecycle, and a small configuration surface. Existing PKI, certificate workflows, broad client integration, and policy controls already built around OpenVPN.

Select the protocol that your team can provision, revoke, monitor, and recover correctly. A theoretically simpler protocol does not help if lost-device revocation is manual and unreliable; a flexible protocol does not help if its certificate and firewall settings are left at defaults.

Deployment checklist

  • Write down the protected networks, excluded networks, DNS policy, IPv4 policy, and IPv6 policy.
  • Set a default-deny outbound firewall and allow only the VPN transport before the tunnel exists.
  • Permit forwarding only through the VPN interface and approved server egress; configure NAT or routed upstream access for full tunnel.
  • Prevent IPv6 bypass by routing it through the VPN or disabling it deliberately.
  • Choose full tunnel or split tunnel explicitly; do not mix undocumented exceptions with a default route.
  • Route DNS to approved resolvers, block unapproved fallbacks, and test A, AAAA, and search-domain behavior.
  • For WireGuard, maintain an inventory of peer public keys and allowed addresses; for OpenVPN, maintain certificates, revocation status, and CA custody.
  • Keep the OpenVPN CA private key away from the VPN server.
  • Test startup, reconnect, pause, sleep/wake, network changes, server failure, and both IPv4 and IPv6.
  • Log policy changes and key or certificate replacements so that an unexpected peer or route has an owner and a recovery path.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

The kill switch blocks all traffic, including the VPN

Check that the firewall permits the VPN server’s current address and transport port on the physical interface. Confirm that name resolution for the VPN endpoint does not depend on the tunnel; use a stable endpoint address or a resolver path that remains available during connection setup. Also verify that the tunnel interface name used in the allow rule matches the interface created by the current client version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Internet works, but traffic bypasses the VPN

Inspect the active default route and more-specific routes, then check forwarding and NAT on the server. In split mode, an excluded destination may be bypassing the tunnel by design; in full mode, a leftover physical-interface route or IPv6 default route indicates an enforcement error. Repeat the test while the VPN is deliberately stopped, not only while it reports connected.

Internal names fail while private IP addresses work

The route may be correct while DNS is not. Confirm that the internal resolver is reachable through the tunnel, that the search domain is assigned to the intended interface, and that the client has not retained a stale local resolver after roaming. If public DNS is intentionally local in split mode, verify that only internal names are sent to the private resolver.

DNS appears protected, but IPv6 still leaks

Check AAAA lookups and direct IPv6 connections separately from IPv4 tests. Add IPv6 tunnel routes and matching firewall rules, or disable IPv6 deliberately across the client and network. A rule that blocks only UDP or only IPv4 DNS is incomplete if the operating system can use another resolver transport or IPv6 path.

A replacement key does not connect

Confirm that the new private key matches the public key installed on the server, that the allowed addresses are unique, and that the endpoint and firewall permit the handshake. Verify the new handshake before deleting the old peer unless the old key is suspected to be compromised. If compromise is suspected, revoke first and complete recovery through a protected channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Use a firewall-enforced fail-closed policy as the foundation, then make routing and DNS choices explicit. Full tunnel is appropriate when all traffic must be inspected or logged and the server can provide forwarding, NAT, and DNS. Split tunnel is appropriate for selected private networks, but every exclusion, search domain, and IPv6 path must be documented and tested. WireGuard’s automatic session-key rotation is valuable, yet administrators still need to replace peer keys; OpenVPN requires certificate revocation and careful CA protection. The best configuration is the one your team can enforce during outages and operate through the complete identity lifecycle.
