For most esports viewers, keep the match on one fast, front-and-center primary monitor and use a second display for Discord, live chat, maps, guides, statistics or stream controls. The second screen should support the way you watch; it does not need to duplicate the primary monitor’s refresh rate or gaming specification.
What the second screen should do
A dual-monitor esports setup separates attention-intensive gameplay from information you need to check periodically. MSI describes the arrangement as gameplay on the main monitor with Discord, team communication, guides, maps or live chat on the second. LG gives the same pattern for chat, stats and content.
- Primary display: match, game client or full-screen broadcast.
- Secondary display: Discord, Twitch chat, a minimap or strategy guide, live statistics, tournament brackets, music and stream-control tools.
- Operating principle: spend performance budget on the screen where motion clarity and latency matter; prioritize readability and adjustability on the utility screen.
Choose the primary monitor first
MSI’s current esports guidance targets a 24- or 27-inch monitor at FHD or QHD resolution with a 240Hz-or-higher refresh rate. Those are targets for the primary screen when competitive motion clarity matters, not a requirement for every display in the setup.
| Role | Useful specification | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary esports screen | 24 or 27 inches; FHD or QHD; 240Hz or higher | Prioritizes smooth motion and a clear, focused view of play. |
| Utility screen | Often 24 inches, 1080p IPS; refresh rate need not match the primary | Text clarity, usable inputs and easy adjustment matter more for chat and dashboards. |
Check your computer before buying: the graphics card or laptop must provide the required HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C outputs. Confirm whether a USB-C port supports video output, and make sure an adapter or dock can deliver the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. - Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Pick a layout that matches your viewing habits
Side-by-side: the easiest all-purpose arrangement
Place the primary display directly in front of you and the utility screen beside it. This is easiest to configure and works when you glance at chat, statistics or a browser frequently. Keep the side monitor angled slightly toward you rather than turning your head sharply for every check.
Portrait side monitor for chat
A 24-inch 1080p IPS monitor with a VESA-compatible or pivot stand is a practical side-screen choice. Portrait orientation shows more lines of text and reduces scrolling, which makes it useful for Twitch or team chat, Discord and message-heavy feeds. Rotate it back to landscape when the second display will show a wide dashboard, video or production preview.

Stacked monitors when desk width is limited
A stacked layout saves horizontal space. Keep the primary monitor straight ahead and reserve the upper display for occasional glances; looking upward repeatedly can increase neck movement. Adjust the upper screen’s tilt so text is readable without leaning back.
Dual-arm mounting
A dual-monitor arm can free desk depth and make side, portrait or stacked positioning easier. It is worthwhile when two factory stands consume too much workspace or when you frequently change orientation. Verify the arm’s weight range and VESA pattern before purchase, and attach it to a desk that can safely support the clamp or grommet.

Set viewing height and distance before fine-tuning windows
Ergonomic guidance differs slightly in its reference point, so use it as a range rather than a single rigid measurement. HP recommends the top edge at or just below eye level and a viewing distance of about 1.5 times the monitor’s diagonal. The American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine places the monitor center 5–6 inches below the straight-ahead vision line and recommends 20–28 inches of distance. In practice, put the primary screen directly ahead, keep its upper area near eye level, and move it far enough away that you can read text without leaning forward.
For long sessions, Cleveland Clinic advises the 20-20-20 pattern: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Keep the secondary monitor at a similar comfortable distance; a portrait display should not be so close that reading its longer column requires constant head movement.

Configure two monitors in Windows
- Connect the second monitor to an available HDMI, DisplayPort or video-capable USB-C output and turn it on.
- Open Settings > System > Display. If Windows does not show the screen, select Detect.
- Use Identify if necessary, then drag the numbered displays until their on-screen positions match the physical arrangement on your desk.
- Open the multiple-displays menu and select Extend these displays. Extend keeps gameplay and utility windows independent.
- Select the primary monitor, open its display settings and confirm the intended resolution and refresh rate. Microsoft also documents Duplicate, PC screen only and Second screen only modes.
- Select the utility monitor and set Display orientation to Portrait or Portrait (flipped) when its physical rotation requires it.
- Arrange your applications: launch the match or broadcast on the primary display, then place Discord, chat, maps, guides or stream controls on the secondary screen.
Decide between the common setups
| Setup | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fast primary + landscape utility | Viewers who switch among chat, dashboards, video and statistics | Uses more desk width and provides fewer chat lines than portrait. |
| Fast primary + portrait utility | Text-heavy Twitch or team chat and long message history | Wide content is awkward until you rotate the screen back. |
| Side-by-side | Frequent glances at both displays | Requires sufficient desk width and careful angle adjustment. |
| Stacked | Small desks or setups that need to preserve horizontal space | Upper-screen viewing is less suitable for constant checking. |
| Dual-arm mount | Users needing flexible height, depth or orientation | Requires compatible VESA mounts, adequate desk support and installation space. |
Troubleshoot the problems that matter most
The second monitor is missing
- Re-seat both ends of the cable and select the correct input on the monitor.
- Try another GPU or laptop output, then use Settings > System > Display > Detect.
- Check that the adapter or dock supports the desired signal; some USB-C ports carry data only.
The screens are reversed or the cursor moves the wrong way
In Display settings, drag the numbered monitor icons to match their physical left-right or stacked positions, then select Apply.

The game opens on the wrong screen
Select the intended primary display in Windows, then choose the game or player’s own display setting if it offers one. In extended mode, move the window to the primary monitor before switching to full screen.
A practical buying checklist
- Primary: 24 or 27 inches, FHD or QHD, and 240Hz or higher when competitive motion clarity is the priority.
- Secondary: readable 1080p text, sensible inputs, and a stand or mount that supports the desired orientation.
- Layout: side-by-side for frequent glances; stacked when width is scarce; portrait for chat; landscape for wide content.
- Ergonomics: primary centered, upper edge near eye level, comfortable viewing distance, and regular visual breaks.
- Compatibility: enough HDMI, DisplayPort or video-capable USB-C outputs, plus cables and adapters rated for the selected resolution and refresh rate.
The Bottom Line
The strongest general-purpose arrangement is a high-refresh 24- or 27-inch primary monitor directly ahead, paired with an adjustable 24-inch utility display beside it. Choose portrait for chat-heavy viewing, landscape for wide dashboards, and a stacked or arm-mounted layout only when desk space or positioning makes it worthwhile.
