Android DEX is the closest software substitute if you want Pixel apps in resizable windows on a Windows, Linux or macOS computer. If you already have a monitor and want the Pixel to drive it directly, use the phone’s native USB-C DisplayPort output and Android desktop mode—but only on models and software builds that support those features. Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro were reported in 2024 as supporting DisplayPort Alt Mode and an early desktop mode, although it was less mature than Samsung DeX.
There is no single DeX equivalent for every Pixel
Samsung DeX combines a phone’s external-display output with a mature desktop interface. Pixel support is more conditional. The exact phone model and Android build determine whether USB-C video output works and whether a desktop-style interface appears.
Reporting from 2024 described the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro as supporting DisplayPort Alt Mode and an Android desktop mode with freeform windows. That implementation was characterized as rudimentary compared with DeX: conventional launcher behavior, keyboard shortcuts and universal drag-and-drop were incomplete or missing. Treat those findings as model- and build-specific rather than proof that every Pixel behaves like a DeX-capable Galaxy.

Native Pixel desktop mode on a monitor
This is the closest match to DeX because the Pixel itself drives the external screen. A compatible phone sends video through USB-C, while a desktop interface places apps in movable, resizable windows. It is the right route if you already own a monitor or television and want a phone-centered workstation without a separate computer.

Before buying accessories, confirm that your exact Pixel model and current software build support DisplayPort video output and desktop mode. If the phone supports video but not the desktop interface, the display may show a mirror rather than a desktop. If it supports neither, an HDMI hub will not add the missing capability.
Android DEX on a Windows, Linux or macOS computer
Android DEX is the clearest computer-side alternative. Its official project repository describes a free, closed-source application that runs Android apps in resizable desktop-style windows on a host computer. It can mirror the phone, stream audio from individual apps, show notifications, control media and accept keyboard and mouse input over USB or Wi-Fi.

This approach does not turn the Pixel into a standalone desktop. The computer remains necessary for the display and window environment, but it is useful when you already have a laptop or desktop and want Android apps beside your regular computer applications.

Hardware required for a direct monitor connection
Samsung’s official external-display checklist is a useful starting point for a Pixel setup. Samsung notes that these accessories are not included with the phone; Pixel buyers should additionally verify video-output compatibility before purchasing.
| Component | What it does | Buying check |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C-to-HDMI hub with USB-A | Converts the phone’s USB-C video signal to HDMI and provides ports for wired peripherals. | Look for DisplayPort Alt Mode support and a USB-A port; a charge-only USB-C adapter is insufficient. |
| HDMI monitor or TV | Displays the Pixel’s desktop or mirrored screen. | Use an available HDMI input and select that input on the display. |
| HDMI cable | Connects the hub to the monitor or TV. | Use a cable compatible with the hub and display. |
| USB keyboard | Provides text entry and shortcuts. | A wired keyboard is the simplest compatibility test. |
| USB mouse | Provides a desktop pointer. | A wired mouse avoids Bluetooth-pairing variables during setup. |
How to set up a Pixel on an HDMI display
- Check the phone first. Identify the exact Pixel model and Android build. Confirm current documentation for DisplayPort video output and desktop mode before spending money on a hub.
- Prepare the display. Connect the HDMI cable to an open HDMI input on the monitor or TV, then connect the other end to the hub.
- Attach the peripherals. Plug the wired keyboard and mouse into the hub’s USB-A ports. If the hub includes power input, connect a suitable charger so the phone is not relying solely on the display connection for power.
- Connect the Pixel. Insert the hub’s USB-C plug into the phone. Select the matching HDMI input on the display.
- Choose the available mode. If Android presents an external-display or desktop-mode prompt, follow it. If the result is only a phone mirror, check the model and software support again; a mirror is not evidence that the full desktop mode is available.
- Test real work. Open several apps, resize and move their windows, type with the keyboard, use the pointer and test copy-and-paste or file access before treating the setup as a laptop replacement.
Phone independence and window behavior can vary with the Pixel model and software build. Test whether the handset remains practical to use while the display is active instead of assuming it will behave exactly like a Galaxy running DeX.

Native mode, Android DEX and mirroring compared
| Criterion | Native Pixel desktop mode | Android DEX on a computer | Mirroring tools |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display path | USB-C DisplayPort output to a monitor or TV | USB or Wi-Fi connection to a host computer | Usually a software stream to a computer |
| Separate computer required | No, if the Pixel and display are compatible | Yes | Yes for computer viewing or control |
| Window management | Freeform windows are reported, but launcher behavior, shortcuts and drag-and-drop are less complete than DeX | Resizable desktop-style Android windows | Generally presents a mirrored phone screen; desktop window behavior depends on the tool |
| Keyboard and mouse | Supported through the hub when the phone recognizes the peripherals | Supported over USB or Wi-Fi according to the project description | Varies by application and connection method |
| Best use | A monitor-driven phone workstation | Android apps alongside normal computer work | Remote access, demonstrations or troubleshooting |
Which option should you choose?
- Choose native Pixel desktop mode if you own a monitor, want the phone to provide the computing device and have verified DisplayPort output on your exact model and build.
- Choose Android DEX if your main screen is a Windows, Linux or macOS computer and you want Android apps in resizable windows without depending on Pixel HDMI support.
- Choose mirroring software if viewing or controlling the handset is enough and a full desktop workspace is not required.
Troubleshooting the common failure points
The display shows “no signal”
Recheck that the Pixel model supports DisplayPort output, that the HDMI cable is connected to the selected input and that the hub is designed for video rather than charging only. Test the hub with another known-compatible device if possible.
The screen mirrors the phone instead of showing desktop windows
Mirroring may be the only mode supported by that model or build. Install available system updates, review the phone’s external-display settings and verify compatibility before assuming the hub is defective.

The keyboard or mouse does not respond
Reconnect the peripherals directly to the hub, remove unnecessary USB devices and test with wired equipment first. Wireless accessories add pairing and battery variables that can obscure whether the desktop connection itself works.
Apps feel unlike a desktop program
Native Pixel desktop mode is still less mature than DeX in the cited Pixel 8-era reporting. Missing shortcuts, inconsistent resizing or limited drag-and-drop can be software limitations rather than hardware faults. Android DEX may provide a more consistent windowed experience on a host computer.
Verdict
For a Pixel, the “perfect” DeX alternative depends on the screen you already use. Android DEX is the most dependable computer-side choice because it documents Windows, Linux and macOS support plus resizable Android windows. A direct monitor setup is more elegant when your Pixel model and software build support DisplayPort Alt Mode and desktop mode, but expect a less mature interface and verify compatibility before buying the hub, display accessories and peripherals.
