Start with Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster if you want the closest overall match. It combines a directed fantasy adventure, a party of characters, turn-based battles and structured progression in the same broad design family as The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age. Choose Dragon Quest XI S for a more approachable modern classic, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for deeper battlefield decisions, Baldur’s Gate 3 for consequential choices, or Persona 5 Royal for character-focused progression.
The Third Age was a 2004 single-player RPG from EA Redwood Shores. Its appeal comes from the combination of a licensed fantasy setting, a clear adventure structure and tactical, turn-based combat rather than from open-ended role-playing systems. The recommendations below are ranked by how well they preserve those qualities, not by graphics, release date or popularity alone.
What makes The Third Age distinctive?
Knowing what you want to keep is more useful than searching for another game with the word “fantasy” in its description. The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age presents a guided, single-player journey through a familiar fantasy world. Battles are turn-based, so you can choose abilities deliberately instead of reacting in real time. The party structure gives each character a role, while progression supplies a steady sense of improvement without requiring you to design an entire ruleset from scratch.

They are party-based RPGs with readable encounters, clear story direction and enough build decisions to make each fight feel planned.

No recommendation reproduces all five elements equally. Final Fantasy X is closest mechanically; Final Fantasy Tactics Advance makes combat more positional; Baldur’s Gate 3 makes the world much more reactive; Dragon Quest XI S broadens the classic adventure; and Persona 5 Royal shifts the emphasis toward relationships and long-term character development.

1. Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster: the closest mechanical match
Why it fits
Final Fantasy X is the safest first recommendation because it preserves the fundamentals that define The Third Age: a fantasy party, a directed adventure and turn-based battles in which you can consider your next move. The comparison is not merely tonal. GamesRadar places The Third Age in the vein of Final Fantasy, while Square Enix identifies Final Fantasy X as a turn-based RPG with Sphere Grid progression.
What changes
The Sphere Grid gives character development a more visible planning layer than a simple level-up sequence. You are not only choosing which command to issue in battle; you are also deciding how a character advances through the grid. That makes long-term planning part of the experience without turning the game into a full tactical simulation.
The remaster bundles Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2. The first game is the closest match for a reader specifically seeking the structure of The Third Age; the second is best treated as additional value rather than the reason to choose the collection. If you want an authored fantasy journey and do not need branching decisions to define the story, this is the strongest starting point.
Where you can play it
The HD remaster is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Steam. Those are the platform details documented for this recommendation; availability, language options and pricing can vary by region and storefront.

Choose it when
- You want turn-based combat to remain the central activity.
- You prefer a focused story over a sandbox with many possible outcomes.
- You want a party-development system that offers planning without overwhelming complexity.
- You are comfortable with a classic Japanese RPG structure rather than modern open-ended design.
2. Dragon Quest XI S: the best approachable modern pick
Why it fits
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition is the recommendation for readers who want the comfort of classic turn-based fantasy with a more modern presentation and a large amount of optional material. Square Enix describes its battle system as accessible to newcomers while still offering enough depth for long-time fans. That balance makes it a good next step if you enjoy planning turns but do not want every encounter to demand specialist knowledge.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The game has a standalone story and a detailed world, so you do not need to study earlier entries before starting. Square Enix’s current official description advertises “well over 100 hours” of content. Treat that figure as publisher marketing rather than a measured average: your actual length depends on difficulty, exploration and how much optional content you pursue.
How it differs from The Third Age
Dragon Quest XI S is broader and more leisurely. Instead of reproducing the exact rhythm of a licensed film-world journey, it gives you a large classic adventure with room to wander, investigate side content and spend more time with its world. The combat remains turn-based and party-centered, but the overall experience is less tightly tied to one linear adaptation.
That difference is an advantage for anyone who wants a substantial follow-up rather than a short imitation. It is also why this game ranks second: it matches the combat philosophy and fantasy-party appeal, but not the specific Middle-earth-shaped progression.
Try before committing
Square Enix offers a demo on several platforms. Because the documented information does not enumerate every supported device, use the demo listing for your region to confirm that your hardware is included. A demo is especially useful here because the game’s scale and pacing are major parts of the experience; you can determine whether its longer, more exploratory structure suits you before purchasing.
Choose it when
- You want a friendly entry point into turn-based party RPGs.
- You value a self-contained story and a world with substantial optional content.
- You want a long adventure; the publisher advertises well over 100 hours, not a guaranteed playtime.
- You prefer classic systems presented in a current definitive edition.
3. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance: the best choice for tactical battles
Why it fits
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is the specialist recommendation for readers whose favorite part of The Third Age is making the right decision during a fight. iRankGames places it first among its turn-based-strategy matches for The Third Age, citing the shared tactical combat, fantasy setting and single-player structure.
Rank #3
- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Here, “tactical” means that the battle itself deserves your attention as a problem to solve. You are not simply selecting the strongest available attack from a menu. Position, sequencing and the interaction between party members become central considerations. That makes each encounter feel more like a contest of planning than a pause between story scenes.
The trade-off
The stronger tactical emphasis also makes this a less direct substitute for the straightforward adventure flow of The Third Age. If you mainly want to revisit Middle-earth-style storytelling with light combat decisions, the extra battlefield focus may feel like a change of genre. If you remember battles as the part you discussed afterward—who should act first, which role to protect and how to turn a difficult situation around—this is likely the better fit than another conventional menu-driven RPG.
How to approach it
Begin with the assumption that winning depends on preparation and adaptation rather than on repeating one reliable command. Give yourself time to understand how the game expects you to read a battlefield. The point of choosing this title is not its resemblance in every presentation detail; it is the way it turns a fantasy party into a set of tactical options.

Choose it when
- You want the deepest emphasis on tactical decision-making among these recommendations.
- You prefer a single-player fantasy structure.
- You enjoy learning a battle system and improving through better planning.
- You are willing to trade some of The Third Age’s directness for more combat complexity.
4. Baldur’s Gate 3: the best for choice and party agency
Why it fits
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the right answer when your favorite idea in The Third Age is not its linearity but traveling with a party whose members matter. PC Gamer highlights its large number of choices, encounters and secrets. Those qualities make it a major step toward systemic role-playing: the adventure responds more visibly to what you decide and how you approach situations.
What changes most
This is a bigger shift from The Third Age than the first three recommendations. Instead of following a largely directed adaptation, you enter a world designed to support multiple solutions and outcomes. Party decisions can reshape the way the adventure plays, so two players may see different encounters or consequences even when they begin from the same premise.
The benefit is agency. You can pursue the characters, mysteries and conflicts that interest you, and the party becomes more than a list of combat roles. The cost is reduced immediacy: the game asks you to make more decisions, inspect more possibilities and accept that there may not be one intended route through a problem.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Who should pick it
Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 if you want a party RPG in which conversation, exploration and problem-solving carry as much weight as battles. Do not choose it solely because it is turn-based; its appeal is the combination of turn-based encounters with a highly reactive world. If you want every chapter to follow a familiar cinematic path, Final Fantasy X or Dragon Quest XI S will feel closer.
Choose it when
- You want decisions to have visible consequences.
- You enjoy discovering secrets and solving encounters in more than one way.
- You want companions and party relationships to influence the adventure.
- You are comfortable with a broader, more systemic role-playing experience.
5. Persona 5 Royal: the best for character-focused progression
Why it fits
Persona 5 Royal belongs on this list for its party progression and character focus, not because it resembles Middle-earth. PC Gamer describes it as an expanded and refined version with new characters, quality-of-life changes and an additional story section. If what you remember most fondly is watching a group develop together over a long campaign, those strengths make it a worthwhile alternative.
Expect a different setting
The game’s modern-city and supernatural tone differs sharply from the fantasy setting of The Third Age. That is a deliberate qualification, not a minor cosmetic difference. You are choosing this title for the way it connects battles, character development and a larger personal story, not for medieval scenery or a conventional quest through a mythic landscape.
The expanded edition is the version to seek because its added characters, refinements and additional story material are part of the reason it is recommended. It is best for players who enjoy progression as an ongoing relationship with the cast, where the value of a new ability is tied to how it changes the group’s capabilities and the story around them.
Choose it when
- You care more about party relationships and individual character arcs than about matching the setting.
- You want a polished, expanded edition rather than the original release.
- You enjoy turn-based battles embedded in a larger character-driven structure.
- You are happy to exchange high-fantasy adventure for a modern supernatural premise.
Which game should you pick?
| Your priority | Pick | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Closest overall feel | Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster | Directed fantasy adventure, party combat and turn-based progression align most closely. |
| Most approachable modern classic | Dragon Quest XI S | Accessible combat, standalone story and extensive optional content. |
| Most tactical combat | Final Fantasy Tactics Advance | Battlefield planning is the central attraction. |
| Most player agency | Baldur’s Gate 3 | Choices, secrets and encounters support multiple approaches. |
| Most character-centered progression | Persona 5 Royal | Expanded cast and story progression make relationships a core part of advancement. |
If you are undecided, use this order: start with Final Fantasy X for the nearest mechanical match; move to Dragon Quest XI S if you want a longer and more welcoming adventure; select Final Fantasy Tactics Advance if combat decisions matter most; choose Baldur’s Gate 3 when agency is the priority; and pick Persona 5 Royal when character development outweighs setting similarity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to avoid choosing the wrong kind of sequel
Do not confuse “fantasy” with “similar”
A fantasy setting alone does not reproduce The Third Age’s appeal. Ask whether the game also has a party, turn-based or tactical encounters and a progression path you can understand without building a spreadsheet. Persona 5 Royal demonstrates why this distinction matters: it is a strong party-progression recommendation while being a poor setting match.

Decide how much agency you want
The five games sit on a spectrum. Final Fantasy X and The Third Age favor directed encounters and an authored route. Dragon Quest XI S keeps a classic structure while adding breadth. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance concentrates freedom inside battles. Baldur’s Gate 3 extends agency across conversations, exploration and consequences. Choosing along that spectrum is more reliable than choosing by release year.
Check access before buying
The documented platform list is explicit only for the Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Steam. Dragon Quest XI S has a demo on several platforms, but the available description does not list every one. Platform information for the other recommendations is not stated here, so verify the current store listing for your device and region before purchase.
A note for readers returning to The Third Age
If you want to replay the original while deciding, a physical The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age Strategy Guide Book from Prima Games exists and describes the game’s tactics-based combat. Treat it as a supplementary manual, not as evidence that any one recommendation reproduces the original. Stock, edition, price and regional availability can change, so confirm those details on the retailer listing you intend to use.
Why these five recommendations cover different kinds of fans
A similarity site identified 25 games in its turn-based-strategy subset for The Third Age; that number is a count from the site, not an independent measure of the market. The five above are more useful as a decision set because each answers a different reason for liking the original. Final Fantasy X addresses structure and mechanics, Dragon Quest XI S accessibility and scope, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance tactical depth, Baldur’s Gate 3 agency, and Persona 5 Royal character progression.
That distinction also explains why there is no single universal replacement. Someone seeking another guided, turn-based fantasy campaign should begin with Final Fantasy X. Someone who wants the same party concept but more freedom should look to Baldur’s Gate 3. Someone whose favorite memories are the battles should choose Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Matching the feature you value most produces a better result than searching for a superficial setting match.
