For most people, the best retro controller for both PC and Switch is the 8BitDo SN30 Pro if you want a compact, SNES-like pad, or the 8BitDo Pro 2 if you need a conventional dual-stick layout. The SN30 Pro keeps the familiar D-pad-first shape while adding clickable analog sticks, rumble, motion controls, wireless Bluetooth, a rechargeable battery, Home and Screenshot buttons, and USB-C. The Pro 2 is the more versatile choice for mixed-era games, with Hall Effect joysticks, rear buttons, profiles, and a hardware mode switch.
Neither recommendation should be read as a blanket promise for every “modern console.” Compatibility depends on the exact controller revision, firmware, connection mode, and system software. The 8BitDo 64 is a specialist choice for N64 games, while the SN30 2.4G NT is designed around original SNES/SFC hardware rather than modern Bluetooth devices.
Quick comparison
These controllers solve different problems. Start with the layout and the hardware you actually intend to use, then check the manufacturer’s current compatibility list before buying.
| Controller | Best fit | Connections and modes | Documented compatibility | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8BitDo SN30 Pro Bluetooth Gamepad | 2D games and players who want an SNES-style shape with modern controls | Bluetooth; USB-C wired; X-input or D-input over Bluetooth | Switch/Switch 2, Windows, SteamOS, Android, Apple platforms, Raspberry Pi | Compact retro layout is less conventional for games designed around two full-size sticks |
| 8BitDo Pro 2 Bluetooth Gamepad | Mixed-era PC and Switch libraries, remapping, and a full dual-stick layout | Bluetooth; USB-C; four-way Switch, Android, D-input, and X-input mode switch | Windows, Switch/Switch 2, SteamOS, Android, Apple platforms, Raspberry Pi | On Switch, it does not provide HD rumble or amiibo scanning |
| 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth | N64 collections on modern hardware | Bluetooth | PC, Switch, Switch 2, Android, Analogue 3D, according to Tom’s Guide’s May 21, 2026 review | Not compatible with PS5 or Xbox in that review; N64 layout is not ideal as a universal modern pad |
| 8BitDo 64 2.4G | Original N64 hardware | Product-specific 2.4G dongle | Original N64 through the supplied dongle | The 2.4G version gives up Switch and Android compatibility |
| 8BitDo SN30 2.4G NT | Original SNES/SFC consoles | Bundled SNES receiver; USB cable for wired use on Windows 10 and Switch | Original SNES/SFC; wired Windows 10 and Switch use is documented in the support FAQ | It cannot use other 8BitDo receivers or adapters |
How to choose a retro controller
Match the layout to the games
A compact SNES-style controller puts the D-pad and face buttons at the center of the experience. That is usually the most natural arrangement for platformers, classic role-playing games, arcade titles, puzzle games, and emulation of 8-bit and 16-bit systems. The SN30 Pro preserves that silhouette while adding controls that modern operating systems expect.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Supported Operating System】The Game Controller is specifically designed for playing classic old school retro snes games on computer or laptop. Compatible with Windows 98 / ME / Vista / 2000/2003 / XP / 7 / 8 / 8.1 / 10/11, Mac OS X/ OS X 10.0 and beyond, Raspberry Pi, Raspberry PI 2 model B,Model A, Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+, Raspberry Pi 2,Raspberry Pi OS, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, Raspberry Pi 3, Raspberry Pi Zero.
- 【Simple USB Plug and Play】If your program or application accepts USB controller input, this classic game controller do not need install drivers or patches. 1.5 meter external cable(approx. 5 ft. Long). Notice: Please download the game emulator first before start the games, and then you must manually set the buttons and directionals within the emulator you're using, and the controller not automatically assigns buttons/directional axes. If on the Steam platform, you need to first enable Steam's "Universal Controller Configuration Support" and then restart Steam. After entering the game, you also need to manually bind key positions in the game
- 【High Sensitivity without Delay】Super sensitive buttons for precision control: 6 fire buttons, a 'Start' button and a 'Select' button, motion control cross. Play your favorite old school games with classic retro feel. Fits perfectly in the hand and also perfect for two player action.Note: Not applicable to Switch/PS games. Not Compatible with TV/ TV Box, third Mini Games Box and Tesla Model 3
- 【Supported Game Emulators】The game controller works with most emulators. Download any emulator you wish to download and use from Google and do the same with ROMS. Notice:Third party controller, not original controller. But it works phenomenal with the Raspberry Pi game emulation and so on
- 【Product Service】If you have any problem during use, send message to us and we will help you to solve the problem soon
A fuller dual-stick pad makes more sense when your library includes third-person games, modern platformers, first-person games, or titles that assume simultaneous camera and movement control. The Pro 2 follows that arrangement and adds two assignable rear buttons, making it the more adaptable option for a mixed PC or Switch library.
An N64-style pad is a specialist tool. Its unusual stick, trigger, and face-button arrangement can make N64 games feel right, but that same shape is less comfortable for games built around a standard modern controller. Choose the 8BitDo 64 for N64-focused play rather than as an all-purpose replacement.
Identify the exact target platform
“Switch compatible” does not establish PlayStation or Xbox support. The documented compatibility in this comparison covers PC operating systems, Switch and Switch 2, SteamOS, mobile platforms, Raspberry Pi, Analogue 3D, and original Nintendo hardware for specific receiver models. The available evidence is not a complete PlayStation or Xbox survey.
Before ordering, match all of these details:
- The exact product name and connection variant, such as Bluetooth versus 2.4G.
- Your console generation, including Switch versus Switch 2 or an original SNES/SFC or N64.
- The controller firmware and the console or operating-system version required by the manufacturer.
- Whether the features you need are available on that platform. Rumble, motion control, remapping, and special Nintendo functions can vary by system.
Choose Bluetooth, USB, or a product-specific receiver
Bluetooth is the flexible choice for supported PCs, Switch systems, mobile devices, and other listed hardware. USB-C gives you a wired fallback and can be useful when pairing is inconvenient or when latency and charging are priorities.
A 2.4G receiver is different from Bluetooth. It is normally paired to a particular product family and target console. The SN30 2.4G NT uses its bundled SNES receiver and cannot use other 8BitDo receivers or adapters. Likewise, the 8BitDo 64 2.4G requires its own dongle for original N64. Do not assume that a receiver from one controller will work with another.
8BitDo SN30 Pro: the best compact all-rounder
The 8BitDo SN30 Pro Bluetooth Gamepad is the clearest choice when “retro” means a compact, SNES-inspired controller that still behaves like a modern gamepad. Its D-pad-first shape suits classic 2D games, but it is not limited to them: the controller includes clickable analog sticks, rumble, motion controls, Home and Screenshot buttons, wireless Bluetooth, rechargeable power, and USB-C.

What it does well
- Familiar control geometry: The compact profile keeps the D-pad prominent and the face buttons close together, which is useful for traditional 2D games.
- Modern input coverage: Clickable sticks and shoulder controls let it address games that require analog input rather than only digital directions.
- Flexible PC connection: 8BitDo lists X-input and D-input over Bluetooth, so the appropriate mode can be selected for the software you are using.
- Motion and system controls: Motion support, Home, and Screenshot buttons make it more practical on Switch than a simple vintage replica.
- Broad listed device support: The official page lists Switch and Switch 2, Windows, SteamOS, Android, Apple platforms, and Raspberry Pi.
Where to be cautious
The SN30 Pro’s compact, retro geometry is its main reason to buy it and its main trade-off. A player accustomed to a large modern dual-stick controller may find the sticks and grip less suitable for games that demand long camera movements or extended analog-stick use. That is a layout preference, not a defect, so decide based on the games you play.

8BitDo Pro 2: the better mixed-era controller
The 8BitDo Pro 2 Bluetooth Gamepad is the stronger recommendation when you want retro cues without giving up a conventional modern layout. It has Hall Effect joysticks, two assignable rear buttons, three custom profiles, motion controls for Switch, Bluetooth and USB-C connectivity, and a four-way hardware switch for Switch, Android, D-input, and X-input.
Why the Pro 2 is more versatile
- Hall Effect joysticks: The sticks use a design intended to reduce the mechanical wear associated with conventional potentiometer sticks. That describes the hardware design; it is not a guarantee of a particular lifespan.
- Rear buttons: The two rear controls can be assigned to frequently used inputs, allowing actions to be triggered without moving a thumb from a stick.
- Three profiles: Custom profiles are useful when different games need different mappings. Save the arrangements you use rather than reconfiguring every title.
- Hardware mode switch: Switch, Android, D-input, and X-input positions make it easier to select the input standard expected by a device or game.
- Motion controls: Motion support is listed for Switch, where compatible games can use it.
Compatibility and version requirements
8BitDo lists the Pro 2 for Windows, Switch and Switch 2, SteamOS, Android, Apple platforms, and Raspberry Pi. The product page gives minimum versions including Windows 10 version 1903, SteamOS 3.7.13, and Switch 2 system version 20.1.1. 8BitDo says Switch 2 support may require a firmware update, so check the current support information before pairing.
On Switch, the Pro 2 does not provide HD rumble or amiibo scanning. Its vibration is standard rumble rather than Nintendo’s HD Rumble implementation. If those two features are essential, this controller is not a complete substitute for a first-party pad even though its basic inputs and motion controls are supported.

The 8BitDo 64 is built around the N64 control layout rather than a general-purpose modern arrangement. Tom’s Guide’s hands-on review, published May 21, 2026, reports that the Bluetooth version works with PC, Switch, Switch 2, Android, and Analogue 3D. The separate 2.4G version adds original N64 support through a dongle but loses Switch and Android compatibility.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
That split is important when shopping: Bluetooth and 2.4G are not interchangeable versions with the same platform list. Select the Bluetooth model for the documented modern devices, or the 2.4G model when your priority is an original N64 console.
The same review says the 8BitDo 64 is not compatible with PS5 or Xbox and that its N64-oriented layout is less suitable for general modern gaming. The review reflects one reviewer’s testing, so treat it as practical evidence rather than a universal performance guarantee. For a library dominated by N64 titles, the specialized shape can be exactly the point; for everything else, the SN30 Pro or Pro 2 is easier to justify.
SN30 2.4G NT: for original SNES and Super Famicom hardware
The 8BitDo SN30 2.4G NT is a hardware-specific choice. Its bundled receiver is intended for original SNES/SFC consoles, so it should not be confused with a Bluetooth SN30 Pro or with the SN30 2.4G model made for other Nintendo hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe support FAQ states that the SN30 2.4G NT can also be used on Windows 10 and Switch with a USB cable. Those are wired uses; the original-console connection is through the supplied SNES receiver. The controller cannot use other 8BitDo receivers or adapters, which rules out treating it as a universal wireless accessory.
Buy this model when authentic original-console compatibility is the deciding factor. If your games are running on a PC, Switch, or Switch 2 and you do not need an original SNES/SFC receiver, a Bluetooth model is the more flexible starting point.
PC and Steam setup
Use the right input mode
On a Windows PC, select the mode your game or launcher expects. The SN30 Pro supports X-input or D-input over Bluetooth. The Pro 2 provides a physical switch for X-input and D-input as well as Switch and Android modes. If a game does not detect the controller, changing to the input standard it supports is usually more useful than repeatedly reconnecting in the wrong mode.

Prefer USB when pairing is the problem
Both the SN30 Pro and Pro 2 can operate over USB-C. Use the cable when Bluetooth pairing is unavailable, when you are updating firmware, or when you want to eliminate wireless variables while diagnosing a game-detection issue. A wired connection does not turn a model into an original-console receiver controller; platform support still follows the product’s design.

Check Steam’s supported list and firmware notes
8BitDo’s Steam compatibility page lists supported controllers and gives firmware requirements for some models. It states that the listed controllers’ features are supported through Steam Input and that third-party drivers are not needed for those products under the stated requirements. Confirm that your exact controller appears on the current list and that its firmware meets the version shown there.
A practical PC checklist
- Identify the controller variant and set its mode before connecting it.
- Update firmware if the manufacturer lists an update for your operating system or Steam setup.
- Connect by Bluetooth or USB-C, then verify that the operating system sees the controller.
- In the game or launcher, select the expected input standard. If the game offers Steam Input, use that layer for remapping rather than installing an unrelated driver.
- Test the D-pad, both sticks, triggers, rumble, and any motion or rear-button assignments in one game before configuring a larger library.
Switch and Switch 2 considerations
For Switch or Switch 2, the SN30 Pro is the compact option and the Pro 2 is the fuller dual-stick option. Both product pages list Switch and Switch 2 support, but the exact system version and firmware still matter. The Pro 2 page specifically lists Switch 2 system version 20.1.1 as a minimum requirement and notes that an update may be needed.
Do not infer first-party feature parity from basic controller recognition. The Pro 2’s Switch support excludes HD rumble and amiibo scanning. The SN30 Pro’s page lists modern controls and compatibility, but individual features can vary by system; verify the current specifications for the firmware and console combination you plan to use.
If the controller fails to appear, first confirm the model’s mode, charge or connect it by USB-C, and check for a firmware requirement. Then recheck that you purchased the Bluetooth rather than a console-specific 2.4G variant. A receiver designed for original SNES or N64 hardware will not provide Bluetooth Switch compatibility.

Original hardware versus modern hardware
Retro appearance and original-console compatibility are separate requirements. A Bluetooth controller can be excellent for emulation or a modern console while having no electrical or receiver compatibility with an original cartridge console. Conversely, a 2.4G controller with a console-specific dongle may be ideal for original hardware while being unsuitable for Switch or Android.

Common buying mistakes and fixes
Assuming every 8BitDo receiver is interchangeable
Receivers are product-specific. The SN30 2.4G NT cannot use other 8BitDo receivers or adapters, and the 8BitDo 64 2.4G depends on its own dongle. Keep the receiver that came with the controller and verify the exact model number before replacing it.
Buying an N64 layout for a general PC library
An N64 layout can be excellent for N64 software and awkward for games designed around two symmetrical sticks. If your library spans many eras, choose the Pro 2 or SN30 Pro according to whether you prefer a full modern grip or a compact D-pad-first shape.
Reading “Switch compatible” as “works everywhere”
Switch support does not establish PS5 or Xbox compatibility. The 8BitDo 64 review explicitly reports no PS5 or Xbox support, and the available product information does not provide a complete compatibility survey for those platforms. Check the exact console and firmware on the manufacturer’s current page.
Ignoring firmware and operating-system requirements
A controller can be physically capable yet fail to connect because its firmware or host system is below the listed minimum. The Pro 2 page identifies Windows 10 version 1903, SteamOS 3.7.13, and Switch 2 system version 20.1.1 among its requirements. Steam’s compatibility page also lists model-specific firmware requirements. Treat those numbers as prerequisites, not optional suggestions.
Expecting every Nintendo feature
The Pro 2’s Switch compatibility does not include HD rumble or amiibo scanning. Standard vibration and motion support do not provide those missing functions. Decide whether those features matter before selecting it as a replacement for a first-party controller.
Which controller should you buy?
Choose the SN30 Pro when
- Your priority is 2D retro games and a familiar SNES-style grip.
- You still want analog sticks, clickable stick buttons, motion, rumble, Home, Screenshot, and USB-C.
- You need the broad platform list documented for Switch/Switch 2, Windows, SteamOS, Android, Apple platforms, and Raspberry Pi.
Choose the Pro 2 when
- Your library includes modern games that benefit from a conventional dual-stick layout.
- You want Hall Effect joysticks, two rear buttons, three profiles, and a physical mode switch.
- You accept that Switch use does not include HD rumble or amiibo scanning.
Choose the 8BitDo 64 when
- You mainly play N64 games and want their original control concept on supported modern devices.
- You have confirmed whether you need the Bluetooth model or the 2.4G original-N64 model.
- You do not require PS5 or Xbox support or a universal modern layout.
Choose the SN30 2.4G NT when
- You specifically need a wireless controller for an original SNES/SFC.
- You are comfortable using the bundled receiver and understand that it cannot be replaced with another 8BitDo adapter.
- Wired Windows 10 or Switch use is sufficient when you are away from the original console.
Final verdict
The SN30 Pro is the best documented compact retro all-rounder for PC and Switch-class devices. It keeps the D-pad-centered feel that makes classic games comfortable while adding the sticks, motion, rumble, and system buttons expected by modern platforms. The Pro 2 is the safer single-controller purchase for a library that mixes retro games with contemporary dual-stick titles, thanks to its fuller layout, Hall Effect joysticks, rear buttons, profiles, and mode switch.
The 8BitDo 64 and SN30 2.4G NT are not inferior versions of those choices; they are specialized controllers. Pick the 8BitDo 64 for N64 play and the SN30 2.4G NT for original SNES/SFC hardware. In every case, verify the exact variant, firmware, operating-system version, and console support before purchase, especially when “modern consoles” might mean a platform outside the documented PC, Switch, SteamOS, mobile, Raspberry Pi, Analogue 3D, or original-console combinations.
