For a strong competitive starting point, turn vibration and trigger effects off, dim the controller indicators, and set automatic controller shutdown to 10 minutes. On a DualSense Edge, use a Precise right-stick curve, a Quick left-stick curve, medium or short trigger stops, and the lowest stable deadzones that do not cause drift. Tune sensitivity in each game before changing controller settings, because there is no universal sensitivity that suits every player.
Recommended PS5 settings at a glance
Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) on your PS5. Use the following as a baseline, then adjust only one option at a time while testing in the game you actually play.
| Setting | Competitive starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Vibration Intensity | Off | Removes physical rumble that can mask fine aim and movement feedback. |
| Trigger Effect Intensity | Off | Provides the shortest, most consistent trigger press for rapid repeated inputs. |
| Controller indicator brightness | Dim | Reduces unnecessary light output and can modestly reduce power use. |
| Controller auto power-off | After 10 Minutes | Prevents the controller from staying awake during breaks or at the console menu. |
| Wireless communication | Use USB Cable when the wireless signal is unreliable | A wired connection avoids interference and prevents a weak radio link from affecting inputs. |
If you still want some feedback, set vibration to Weak rather than restoring full intensity. The same compromise applies to trigger effects: Weak preserves some resistance while reducing the travel and force that can slow repeated shots.
How to change the settings on a standard DualSense
- From the PS5 home screen, select Settings.
- Choose Accessories, then Controller (General).
- Set Vibration Intensity to Off or Weak.
- Set Trigger Effect Intensity to Off or Weak.
- Set the controller indicator brightness to Dim.
- If you are using a cable, open the communication method setting and select Use USB Cable.
- To control idle drain separately, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Set Time Until Controllers Turn Off > After 10 Minutes.
These are system-level defaults. A game can still offer its own vibration, adaptive-trigger, sensitivity, response-curve or aim-assist controls. When a game has a matching option, disable or tune it there as well; otherwise the game may continue requesting effects even after you reduce the system setting.

Tune the game before the controller
Controller hardware cannot compensate for an unsuitable in-game sensitivity. Start with the game’s look, aim and response-curve controls, then make small changes to the DualSense or Edge. Bungie’s guidance is explicit: “There is no single perfect sensitivity setting for everyone.” Your screen size, field of view, preferred role, thumb movement and the game’s own aiming model all change what feels controllable.
A practical sensitivity sequence
- Choose a moderate in-game look sensitivity and play a short training drill that includes both slow tracking and quick turns.
- Adjust vertical and horizontal sensitivity together until a normal thumb movement can complete the turns you need without lifting your thumb repeatedly.
- Test fine aim on a distant target. If the reticle skips past the target, reduce sensitivity before changing the stick curve.
- Test a rapid 180-degree turn. If it requires several thumb lifts, increase sensitivity slightly or use a faster curve.
- Only after these tests, adjust the controller’s stick curve or deadzone. Record the previous value so you can revert quickly.
Do not copy another player’s sensitivity as a guarantee of better performance. Use other settings as a starting experiment, not as a universal prescription.
DualSense Edge: a competitive profile that is easy to test
The DualSense Edge can store button assignments, stick sensitivity and deadzone, trigger deadzone, vibration intensity and trigger-effect intensity in profiles. It supports up to three custom profile shortcuts plus the default profile. That lets you keep separate configurations for a shooter, a driving game and a general profile without rebuilding settings each session.

- Right stick: Precise, as a starting curve for controlled fine aim.
- Left stick: Quick, as a starting curve for rapid movement.
- Trigger stops: Medium or short for faster repeated shots.
- Vibration and trigger effects: Off for the clearest competitive feel, or Weak if you rely on directional feedback.
- Deadzones: Lower them gradually only after confirming that the stick and trigger remain stable.
These recommendations come from the starting guidance published by Bungie’s Marathon team. They are not a promise that Precise and Quick will outperform every other curve in every game. Save the profile, test it in a training area, and keep a neutral profile available for games that respond poorly to aggressive curves.
Creating and switching profiles
- Open the Edge settings interface from the PS5 accessories controls.
- Create a profile and give it a clear name such as “Shooter” or “Movement test.”
- Set the stick curves, deadzones, trigger range, trigger stops and feedback intensity.
- Save the profile, then assign it to one of the controller’s profile shortcuts.
- Switch to the profile only after confirming that the game recognizes the intended button layout and trigger behavior.
Profile shortcuts are useful when a game has different control demands between menus, vehicles and on-foot play. Keep the default profile unchanged so you always have a known-good fallback.

Understanding stick deadzones
Sony defines a stick deadzone as “the range that you can tilt the stick before it’s recognized as an input.” A 10% deadzone therefore ignores the first 10% of travel; the stick must move farther before the game receives an input. The exact feel depends on the game and its own input processing.
Why a lower deadzone can feel faster
Reducing the deadzone lets a small thumb movement register sooner. That can make initial aim corrections and directional changes feel more immediate. The trade-off is that a physically imperfect or aging stick may report movement while your thumb is resting, producing drift. A setting that is theoretically faster is not competitive if the reticle moves when you are trying to hold still.
How to find the lowest stable value
- Start at the game’s default or a conservative Edge deadzone.
- Lower the value in small steps rather than jumping directly to the minimum.
- In a menu or training area, release the stick completely and watch for cursor or camera movement.
- Repeat while pressing the stick in different directions and after the controller has been in use for several minutes.
- Raise the deadzone one step if you see drift, unintended strafing or a reticle that will not settle.
Test left and right sticks separately. Movement drift on the left stick can be more disruptive than a small amount of right-stick aim drift, while a game with vehicle steering may require a different compromise.
Trigger deadzones and trigger stops
Trigger deadzone is the portion of trigger travel that is ignored before an input registers. Lowering it can make the trigger respond sooner, but it also reduces the margin for accidental presses. As with stick deadzones, test for unintended input before adopting a low value.
Choosing a trigger-stop length
- Short stop: Fastest repeated presses and a good starting point for semi-automatic weapons or actions that do not need analog travel.
- Medium stop: A compromise when you want quicker shots but still need some travel for control.
- Full travel: Best when a game uses analog trigger position for acceleration, braking, throttle, or variable action strength.
Do not use a short stop in a racing game and expect the same control as full travel. Keep a separate Edge profile for games that depend on analog trigger range.

Vibration and trigger effects: performance versus information
Vibration can communicate impacts, damage, terrain and nearby events, but it also adds movement to the controller while you are trying to make small corrections. Turning it Off gives the clearest competitive feel. Weak intensity is a reasonable compromise if directional or event feedback helps you react.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Adaptive trigger effects add resistance or changing tension to the triggers. That can improve immersion, yet the extra force and travel can slow repeated inputs in shooters. Set Trigger Effect Intensity to Off for fast repeated actions, or Weak when you want some feedback without full resistance. Edge profiles can save this choice per game type.
Remember that some games expose their own vibration and trigger-effect switches. Disable those in the game’s controller or accessibility menu if you want a completely effect-free setup.
Battery-life settings that do not compromise controls
The most useful battery steps are reducing indicator brightness, vibration and trigger effects, then making sure the controller powers down when idle. Set indicator brightness to Dim, vibration and trigger effects to Weak or Off, and use the 10-minute automatic shutdown path: Settings > System > Power Saving > Set Time Until Controllers Turn Off > After 10 Minutes.
Sony states that battery duration varies with storage method, conditions of use and environmental factors. There is no authoritative universal runtime figure for a DualSense under a fixed competitive-settings workload, so treat any single-hour claim as conditional rather than a guarantee. Wireless play, feedback intensity, room conditions and how the controller is stored all affect the result.

Use a cable when the wireless link is unreliable
If the controller is slow to reconnect, drops input or behaves inconsistently at your seating distance, connect it with the included USB cable and select Use USB Cable in the controller communication settings. Wired play can also let you continue while the battery charges. Check that the cable is fully seated at both ends and that the PS5 recognizes the controller before starting a competitive match.
Battery habits during breaks
Use the 10-minute shutdown rather than leaving the controller active on a paused screen. Sony’s 2020 DualSense instruction manual also gives guidance to take a break at approximately 30-minute intervals. That interval is an ergonomic recommendation, not a battery-runtime measurement, but it is a useful point to put the controller down and let it enter its idle state.
Standard DualSense or DualSense Edge?
The standard DualSense is sufficient when the game already provides the sensitivity, response-curve and deadzone controls you need. The Edge becomes useful when you want those adjustments stored in hardware profiles or need physical trigger stops and additional rear-button mapping.
| Decision factor | Standard DualSense | DualSense Edge |
|---|---|---|
| Stick curves and deadzones | Relies mainly on each game’s controls and system feedback settings. | Stores stick sensitivity and deadzone settings in profiles. |
| Trigger travel | Uses the standard adaptive-trigger travel. | Provides adjustable trigger range and physical stop positions. |
| Profile switching | Does not provide Edge-style custom profile shortcuts. | Up to three custom profile shortcuts plus the default profile. |
| Rear-button mapping | No Edge rear-button profile system. | Supports saved button assignments for compatible play styles. |
| Feedback controls | System-level vibration and trigger-effect intensity controls. | Those feedback controls can be saved per profile. |
| Need for extra hardware | None if the game’s own settings are adequate. | Useful when you need repeatable hardware-level curves, stops or mappings. |
The Edge is not automatically more accurate. Its advantage is repeatability and control: you can save a known setup, change only one variable, and return to the default profile when a game behaves differently. If your game already exposes the required settings, the standard controller may provide everything you need.
Game-specific compatibility and exceptions
Controller-level settings cannot force a game to support every feature. A title may ignore a custom curve, interpret trigger travel differently, or overwrite button behavior with its own control scheme. Test each profile in the actual game, not only in the PS5 settings screen.

When to keep full trigger travel
Use full travel for driving, flying or any game where the trigger position controls acceleration or braking. A short stop converts an analog action into a much smaller range and can make smooth speed control difficult.
When feedback is strategically useful
Weak vibration or trigger effects can remain worthwhile in games where tactile cues reveal damage, weapon state or environmental events faster than visual indicators. If the effect distracts from aiming, switch it Off for ranked or tournament sessions and retain a separate immersive profile.
When to prefer USB
Choose USB communication when the wireless path is unstable, when you are troubleshooting missed inputs, or when a long session makes charging interruptions inconvenient. A cable does not correct a drifting stick or an unsuitable sensitivity; it only addresses the communication and power path.

The aim drifts while the stick is untouched
- Raise that stick’s deadzone one step.
- Check whether the drift appears in the PS5 interface as well as in the game.
- Test again after the controller has warmed through normal use.
- Use a neutral profile while determining whether the issue is hardware or a curve setting.
Rapid shots feel slow
- Turn Trigger Effect Intensity Off or Weak.
- On Edge, test a medium or short trigger stop.
- Confirm that the game’s own trigger-effect setting is not re-enabling resistance.
- Keep full travel for games that require analog control.
The controller disconnects or inputs arrive late
- Connect the included USB cable.
- Set the communication method to Use USB Cable.
- Repeat the same drill with wireless and wired connections to isolate the problem.
- If wired play resolves it, keep the cable for competitive sessions rather than compensating with sensitivity changes.
The new Edge curve feels unpredictable
- Return to the default profile.
- Change only the right-stick curve while leaving deadzone and in-game sensitivity unchanged.
- Test slow tracking and a rapid turn separately.
- Save the curve only after it improves both tests.
A repeatable testing checklist
- Charge the controller or connect USB so low power is not part of the test.
- Select a neutral profile and record the game’s current sensitivity.
- Turn vibration and trigger effects Off, then complete a short aim and movement drill.
- Test the same drill with Weak feedback if tactile cues matter to you.
- On Edge, try Precise right-stick and Quick left-stick curves without changing deadzones.
- Lower each deadzone gradually until drift or accidental input appears, then raise it one step.
- Compare medium and short trigger stops in a weapon drill; restore full travel for analog-trigger games.
- Play a normal match before committing the profile. A setting that feels impressive in a training room may be tiring or inconsistent over a full session.
- Save the final configuration to a named profile and keep the default profile untouched as a recovery option.
Bottom line for competitive players
Start with vibration and trigger effects Off, dim indicators, and a 10-minute controller shutoff. Tune sensitivity in the game first. If you use a DualSense Edge, begin with Precise on the right stick, Quick on the left, medium or short trigger stops, and conservative deadzones that you lower only while the controller remains stable. Use Weak feedback or full trigger travel whenever the game benefits from tactile information or analog control, and switch to USB when wireless communication is unreliable.
