The closest PS5 game to the announced Guns of Eschaton formula is Remnant II. It delivers demanding, build-focused gun combat with Soulslike consequences and cooperative play, although its camera and setting differ. Hunt: Showdown 1896 is the better substitute for a first-person, supernatural Western mood, but it is an extraction shooter rather than a traditional Soulslike campaign.

Guns of Eschaton is scheduled for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on December 8, 2026. Until it launches, choose between Remnant II for the combat structure or Hunt: Showdown 1896 for the perspective, firearms and occult frontier atmosphere.

What Guns of Eschaton is promising on PS5

Guns of Eschaton is an upcoming first-person Soulslike shooter set in an apocalyptic version of the American West. Its publisher, GCL Global Holdings subsidiary 4Divinity, describes it as “an original Soulslike FPS set in an apocalyptic Western.” The official PlayStation Store uses similar wording: “a first-person soulslike shooter set in an apocalyptic Western,” and adds that “Every gun has its own character.”

The PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC versions are scheduled to launch globally on December 8, 2026. The PlayStation Store lists that same date. At the time covered here, the game is unreleased, so its advertised systems should be treated as planned features rather than hands-on-confirmed behavior.

Marvel's Wolverine PS5
  • Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
  • Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
  • An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
  • A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor

The unusual combination

Most games that resemble one part of the pitch miss another. A conventional Western shooter may provide revolvers, frontier towns and outlaws but not deliberate stamina-like decision-making. A Soulslike may provide punishing bosses and character builds but use swords, spells or a third-person camera. Guns of Eschaton is positioned at the intersection:

  • First-person shooting instead of a third-person melee viewpoint.
  • Deliberate engagements in which timing, positioning and enemy weaknesses matter more than simply holding the trigger.
  • Scarce ammunition, making weapon choice and shot discipline part of survival.
  • Parries or dashes, character builds and occult abilities layered over firearms.
  • Bullet time, choices and multiple endings, according to its Steam listing.
  • A mythic, occult interpretation of Old West legends rather than a historical Western setting.

Gematsu has reported solo or cooperative play, but the final size and rules of co-op should be checked against the launch build. That uncertainty matters when selecting a substitute: a game can match the mood and gunplay while offering a very different multiplayer structure.

How to compare a PS5 alternative

Use five questions instead of looking for a superficial “Western game” label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Which camera do you need? A first-person game preserves the target’s weapon-level view and makes aiming central. A third-person game gives more awareness of your character, animations and incoming attacks.
  2. How much Soulslike pressure do you want? This can mean limited resources, dangerous enemies, recoverable losses, boss learning and builds. It is not the same as simply having difficult gunfights.
  3. Is the setting essential? Guns of Eschaton’s hook combines firearms with an occult apocalypse in the American West. Some alternatives match the combat but replace the frontier; others match the frontier and supernatural tone but change the progression loop.
  4. Are you playing alone or with others? A campaign built around co-op behaves differently from an online match-based game, even when both support solo players.
  5. Do you want to play now? Both recommendations below are available before the December 2026 target date, while Guns of Eschaton remains a wait-and-see purchase until release.

At-a-glance comparison

Game Camera Combat relationship Setting relationship Solo and co-op structure Status
Guns of Eschaton First person Advertised Soulslike FPS: deliberate gunfights, scarce ammunition, enemy study, parries or dashes, builds and occult abilities Occult, apocalyptic American West Solo or co-op reported; final scope not confirmed Scheduled for PS5 on December 8, 2026
Remnant II Third person Closest match for build-driven, punishing gun combat and boss learning Dark fantasy and science-fiction worlds rather than a Western Designed for solo play and cooperative campaign play Playable on PS5 now
Hunt: Showdown 1896 First person Deliberate weapon handling, high-risk encounters and lethal mistakes, but an extraction-shooter loop rather than a Soulslike campaign Strongest frontier and supernatural-horror overlap Online match-based solo and team play; not a conventional co-op campaign Playable on PS5 now

Best overall combat substitute: Remnant II

Remnant II is the safest recommendation when your priority is “a difficult shooter with Soulslike structure.” It is played in third person, so it does not reproduce the exact visual feel of Guns of Eschaton. It does, however, put guns, enemy patterns, build choices and boss problem-solving at the center of a campaign that can be played alone or cooperatively.

Why it matches the mechanical promise

  • Firearms are the primary answer to threats. You are not merely carrying a gun as a secondary tool for a melee game; weapon selection and accuracy shape how encounters are solved.
  • Builds change your approach. Character archetypes, weapons, traits and equipment let you tune damage, survivability and utility rather than relying on one fixed protagonist.
  • Enemies require learning. Bosses and elite encounters punish unplanned aggression. Recognizing attacks, choosing safe openings and managing healing are closer to Soulslike problem-solving than to a standard cover shooter.
  • Co-op is meaningful. You can work through the campaign with other players, making it a practical choice if the cooperative side of Guns of Eschaton is important to you.

Where Remnant II does not match

The third-person camera is the most obvious difference. You will see your character, weapons and animations from behind rather than aiming directly through a first-person view. Its worlds also do not recreate an occult American frontier; the tone is dark fantasy and science fiction instead. If your ideal substitute is a supernatural gunslinger walking through a Western town, Remnant II will feel like a combat replacement rather than a setting replacement.

Its campaign structure is also more established than the still-unreleased target’s advertised design. Do not assume that every planned Guns of Eschaton feature—such as bullet time, choices or multiple endings—has an equivalent in Remnant II. The useful comparison is the underlying loop: explore, learn enemies, improve a build and return to difficult encounters with a better plan.

Choose Remnant II if…

  • You want the closest available match for gun-based Soulslike progression.
  • You prefer a complete campaign to repeated competitive or extraction matches.
  • You need reliable solo play with the option to invite co-op partners.
  • You can accept third-person combat and a non-Western setting.

Best first-person and Western-mood substitute: Hunt: Showdown 1896

Hunt: Showdown 1896 is the stronger choice when the first-person viewpoint, old-Western weaponry and supernatural danger matter more than a Soulslike progression system. It is an online extraction shooter, not a conventional campaign in which you move from one handcrafted boss to the next. Every match asks you to enter a dangerous map, investigate clues, fight other players and hostile creatures, and decide when to leave with what you have gained.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it matches the atmosphere

  • First-person firearms are the focus. The viewpoint and weapon handling are much closer to the perspective promised by Guns of Eschaton than Remnant II’s camera.
  • The frontier is central. Its late-19th-century setting supplies the mud, wooden structures, period weapons and lawless atmosphere associated with a supernatural Western.
  • Occult threats shape encounters. Monsters and other unnatural dangers create the horror element that a conventional Western shooter would lack.
  • Mistakes are expensive. A careless shot, noisy movement or poor timing can expose you to both AI enemies and rival hunters. That produces tension similar to a Soulslike’s punishment, even though the rules are different.

Why it is not a Soulslike replacement

Hunt: Showdown 1896 revolves around matches and extraction. Its defining decision is whether to pursue a target, fight rival players and escape safely, not whether to spend accumulated resources at a checkpoint or refine a long-term boss strategy. Character loss, loadouts and match progression should not be treated as interchangeable with Soulslike death-and-recovery systems.

It is also fundamentally online and competitive. You can enter alone or with teammates, but a team encounter is not the same as a cooperative campaign in which everyone advances through the same story. If your group wants a shared adventure with repeatable bosses and build experimentation, Remnant II is the better fit.

Choose Hunt: Showdown 1896 if…

  • You specifically want first-person play on PS5.
  • The American frontier and supernatural horror are more important than RPG-style progression.
  • You enjoy suspense created by other human players, sound cues and irreversible match mistakes.
  • You are comfortable with an online extraction format instead of a traditional solo campaign.

A practical decision guide for PS5 players

Step 1: Decide whether the camera is non-negotiable

If you want to aim down a weapon in first person and keep the world framed from the character’s eyes, start with Hunt: Showdown 1896. If you can accept third person to obtain a more Soulslike campaign structure, start with Remnant II. This single choice eliminates the most common mismatch.

Step 2: Decide whether you need progression between encounters

Choose Remnant II when you want equipment and build decisions to matter across a campaign. Choose Hunt: Showdown 1896 when the appeal is preparing for a high-risk match, reading the map and escaping alive. Both reward caution, but they reward it through different systems.

Step 3: Decide what “co-op” means to your group

For a shared adventure that can be resumed and developed over time, Remnant II is the more direct fit. For a team-based online session where everyone contributes information, sound awareness and combat ability, Hunt: Showdown 1896 is appropriate. Neither should be used as proof of the final Guns of Eschaton co-op scope, which has only been reported in broad solo-or-cooperative terms.

Step 4: Decide how much Western identity you need

Hunt: Showdown 1896 wins on frontier atmosphere. Remnant II wins when the setting is secondary to combat experimentation. Guns of Eschaton is unusual precisely because it promises both, so any game available before December 8, 2026 involves a compromise.

What to verify before buying Guns of Eschaton

Because the game has not launched, revisit the official PlayStation Store listing and the publisher’s final release information near December 8, 2026. Check the following points rather than assuming every early description is unchanged:

  • Whether the PS5 release date remains December 8, 2026 in your region.
  • How solo and cooperative play work: campaign co-op, drop-in sessions, matchmaking or another format.
  • Whether scarce ammunition applies globally or only to particular difficulties or encounters.
  • How parries, dashes and occult abilities interact with first-person aiming.
  • Whether bullet time, choices and multiple endings are present in the launch version.
  • Which accessibility, performance and control options are available on PS5.

The phrase “Every gun has its own character” indicates that weapons are intended to feel distinct, but it does not establish a particular number of guns, damage model, upgrade tree or balance standard. Those details should be judged from the final game, not inferred from the marketing line.

Wait or play now?

Play Remnant II now when combat is the priority

Remnant II is the best immediate purchase for a player who wants a demanding, build-oriented shooter with solo and cooperative campaign options. It sacrifices the first-person camera and Western setting, but it covers the most important mechanical overlap.

Your family’s days are numbered, and every time you take on a quest, time moves forward, compelling you closer to the end. Choose carefully whom to help and whom to leave behind. You will not have time for everyone. The world waits for no one. And neither does the villain.

Play Hunt: Showdown 1896 now when atmosphere is the priority

Hunt: Showdown 1896 is the better interim choice for first-person gunplay in a supernatural frontier. Its extraction format and online competition are substantial differences, so select it only if those differences sound appealing rather than merely tolerable.

Wait for Guns of Eschaton when the combination is the point

If you specifically want a first-person Soulslike built around scarce ammunition, enemy-weakness study, parries or dashes, occult abilities and an apocalyptic Western, neither current alternative fully replaces it. The December 8, 2026 date is the announced target, and the final co-op scope and other features still need confirmation at launch.

Bottom line

There is no exact PS5 substitute for Guns of Eschaton before its release. Remnant II is the best match for Soulslike gun combat, builds and cooperative campaign play. Hunt: Showdown 1896 is the best match for first-person firearms and occult Western tension. Pick the one that matches your highest-priority axis, or wait if the appeal depends on receiving all of those elements in one game.
