Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! are the closest Nintendo Switch games to FireRed and LeafGreen because they return to Kanto and preserve the series’ beginner-friendly journey through familiar towns, routes and Gyms. Their catching system is different, however. If you want the most traditional turn-based remake after Let’s Go, choose Pokémon Brilliant Diamond or Pokémon Shining Pearl.

The right alternative depends on which part of the Game Boy Advance games you miss: Kanto nostalgia, the classic route-and-Gym rhythm, a newer mainline region, or a more exploratory adventure. This guide ranks the Switch choices by that specific similarity rather than treating every Pokémon game as interchangeable.

Quick comparison

Game Best for Similarity to FireRed/LeafGreen Important difference
Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! Kanto nostalgia, returning players and newcomers Highest setting and theme match Catching and partner systems are modernized rather than copied from the Game Boy Advance games
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond / Shining Pearl A conventional remake with routes, towns, Gyms and turn-based battles High structural similarity It recreates Sinnoh’s Diamond/Pearl adventure in a 3D presentation
Pokémon Sword / Shield A modern mainline journey that still follows a familiar badge progression Medium It moves the story to Galar and adds newer systems
Pokémon Scarlet / Violet A newer mainline experience with a more open-world presentation Medium to low Exploration is less tightly ordered around a single route-and-Gym path
Pokémon Legends: Arceus Exploration, field research and a deliberate change of pace Lowest mechanically The official description calls it “an all-new action RPG” Sinnoh adventure

1. Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!: the closest match

If your question is “What Pokémon game on Switch is most like FireRed and LeafGreen?”, start here. Both Let’s Go games revisit the Kanto region, the same broad setting introduced in the original Red, Green, Blue and Yellow adventures and later remade by FireRed and LeafGreen. The towns, route-based travel and early-generation Pokémon give them the strongest nostalgia connection on Nintendo Switch.

The official product description says the games bring “the experience of a classic Pokémon RPG to Nintendo Switch,” with gameplay approachable to newcomers while remaining deep enough to challenge veteran Trainers. At the beginning, you encounter either Pikachu or Eevee, depending on the version you choose. That makes the opening immediately recognizable to anyone whose favorite memory is leaving Pallet Town with a first partner.

  • The Pokémon Brilliant Diamond game brings new life to this remade classic with added features
  • Explore the Grand Underground to dig up items and Pokémon Fossils, build a Secret Base, and more.
  • Test your style and rhythm in a Super Contest Show
  • A reimagined adventure, now for the Nintendo Switch system

What feels familiar

  • Kanto is the central region, so the journey uses the setting, landmarks and first-generation Pokémon that define FireRed and LeafGreen.
  • The adventure is organized around towns, routes, rival encounters, Gyms and a sequence of major objectives rather than one uninterrupted open world.
  • Pikachu or Eevee is a prominent partner throughout the story, making the choice of edition meaningful from the first scene.
  • The presentation is designed as a welcoming classic-RPG entry point, so it works for a returning player who wants recognizable foundations without starting with a much more experimental game.

What is different from FireRed and LeafGreen

The largest change is how you catch Pokémon. Let’s Go modernizes the catching loop instead of asking you to weaken every wild Pokémon through a standard battle first. That change affects the rhythm of route exploration: catching is more immediate and central, while trainer battles remain the place where you use the familiar turn-based battle structure.

The partner system is also more visible than the starter relationship in FireRed or LeafGreen. Your selected Pikachu or Eevee is not merely a temporary team member; it is the identity of the edition and a constant companion. Choose Let’s Go, Pikachu! if that partner is the version you want to build the adventure around, or Let’s Go, Eevee! if Eevee is the better fit. The Kanto setting is shared, so this is primarily a partner and collection preference rather than a different region choice.

Who should buy Let’s Go?

Choose one of the Let’s Go games when your priority is atmosphere: Kanto routes, familiar species and a gentle re-entry into Pokémon. It is also the safest recommendation for a newcomer playing alongside someone who grew up with FireRed or LeafGreen. Choose another title if your main requirement is that wild encounters and progression behave exactly like a traditional pre-Switch Pokémon game; the catching redesign is the compromise for getting the closest setting match.

2. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: the strongest traditional remake alternative

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl are the best choices after Let’s Go for readers asking, “Which Switch Pokémon remake has the classic Gym-and-route feel?” They revisit the Sinnoh adventures originally released as Diamond and Pearl. The official site describes the experience as “the nostalgia of the Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl games in an adventure reborn on Nintendo Switch systems,” while the Pokémon product page identifies them as updates of the Nintendo DS role-playing games.

Why the structure resembles FireRed and LeafGreen

Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl retain the conventional Pokémon progression many FireRed and LeafGreen players expect: travel between distinct locations, pass through routes and caves, build a team, challenge Gym Leaders and advance through a largely directed regional journey. Battles use the familiar turn-based format, so decisions about type matchups, moves and party composition remain central rather than being replaced by an action-oriented control scheme.

  • Journey to the Sinnoh region in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl!
  • Embark on an adventure through the Sinnoh region with Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl on Nintendo Switch, coming on 19th November, 2021!
  • Adventures in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl will take place in the Sinnoh region. Rich in nature and with towering Mount Coronet at its heart, Sinnoh is a land of many myths passed down through the ages. You’ll visit many different locations in the Sinnoh region, while striving to become the Champion of the Pokémon League.
  • The original story has been faithfully reproduced, and the sense of scale in the originals’ towns and routes has been carefully preserved. People who played Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl can revisit familiar places and relive familiar scenes once more. For those setting out through Sinnoh for the first time, plenty of new encounters and surprises await.
  • These remakes include easy-to-understand, player-friendly conveniences of the modern Pokémon series, plus up-close-and-personal Pokémon battle scenes.

They are not Kanto remakes. Sinnoh has its own geography, story and regional Pokédex, and the presentation uses a modern 3D style instead of FireRed and LeafGreen’s Game Boy Advance visuals. That makes them a structural match rather than a setting match. If you remember the cadence of earning badges and unlocking the next part of the map more than you remember Kanto itself, this pair is likely the better fit.

Choosing between Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

The two editions represent the same remake framework, so select according to which version’s available Pokémon and edition identity you prefer. The important decision is choosing this traditional remake format over Let’s Go’s Kanto nostalgia or the more open-ended modern games. Players who want a familiar, ordered campaign should put Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl near the top of their list.

3. Sword and Shield: a modern mainline game with familiar bones

Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield are suitable when you want a newer mainline adventure without abandoning the recognizable Pokémon formula. Nintendo lists the pair among Switch Pokémon games supported by Pokémon HOME, and its Switch catalog includes the titles for purchase. Their region is Galar, not Kanto, so the emotional connection to FireRed and LeafGreen is lower than in Let’s Go.

Where Sword and Shield overlap with the older games

The core loop still revolves around assembling a team, traveling through a regional map and taking on major battles as the story advances. That makes Sword and Shield a medium-similarity option: the setting and systems are newer, but the experience remains recognizably a mainline Pokémon journey rather than an action RPG.

Why it may feel less like FireRed

Galar’s presentation and systems reflect a later generation, so the game does not try to reproduce Kanto’s landmarks or the compact visual language of FireRed and LeafGreen. Pick Sword or Shield when “like FireRed” means “a contemporary badge-focused Pokémon campaign,” not when it means “the same region and first-generation atmosphere.”

  • Test your style and rhythm in a Super Contest Show

4. Scarlet and Violet: the newer, more open-ended route

Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet are for players who want the most current-feeling mainline direction among the games listed here. Nintendo includes both among Switch Pokémon titles compatible with Pokémon HOME and lists them in its Switch catalog. Their presentation is more open-world than the tightly staged route progression associated with FireRed and LeafGreen.

When Scarlet or Violet is the right choice

Choose one when discovery, flexible travel and a modern region matter more than reproducing the older games’ order. You still get a mainline Pokémon framework, but the sense of deciding where to go next is stronger. This makes Scarlet and Violet a medium-to-low similarity choice: they preserve the broader series identity while changing how the map and objectives are presented.

What to expect as a FireRed player

Do not buy Scarlet or Violet expecting a direct remake or a compact Kanto-style campaign. The appeal is seeing how the mainline formula has evolved. Players who found FireRed’s linear route order restrictive may prefer this approach; players who want every Gym to arrive in a predictable sequence should start with Let’s Go or Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl instead.

5. Pokémon Legends: Arceus: the exploration-first change of pace

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the least mechanically similar recommendation, but it can be the most refreshing follow-up if you are willing to change what “a Pokémon adventure” means. The official site describes it as “an all-new action RPG Sinnoh adventure.” That wording matters: this is not simply another route-by-route remake with a different regional name.

Why it stands apart

Legends: Arceus emphasizes exploration and field work in the Sinnoh region rather than reproducing the conventional FireRed-and-LeafGreen progression. The action-RPG structure changes the pace and the way you interact with the world. Instead of selecting it for nostalgia, select it because you want to investigate an unfamiliar version of Sinnoh, move through a more exploratory environment and experiment with a different style of Pokémon play.

  • Rich in nature and with mighty mount coronet at its heart, Sinnoh is a land of many myths passed down through the ages.

  • You’ll choose either Turtwig, Chimchar, or Piplup to be your first partner Pokémon and then set off on your journey to become the champion of the Pokémon League.

Who should choose it?

It is the right recommendation for a FireRed fan who has already had the traditional experience and wants a genuine contrast. It is the wrong first pick if your non-negotiable requirements are Kanto, a classic badge sequence or the closest possible remake structure. Those needs point to Let’s Go or Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl.

Your priority Pick Reason
Kanto, first-generation nostalgia and a familiar visual theme Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee! It is the only listed Switch option built around Kanto and the Pikachu/Eevee partner choice

More freedom to explore a modern region Scarlet or Violet Its open-world presentation changes the order and feel of progression
A deliberate mechanical departure Legends: Arceus It is officially positioned as an all-new action RPG rather than a conventional remake

How Pokémon HOME fits into the decision

Pokémon HOME is a useful supporting service if you maintain a collection across Switch games. Nintendo’s compatibility list includes the Switch Pokémon titles discussed here, and the official HOME description presents the service as a way to store Pokémon across multiple compatible games. Compatibility is title-specific, so check Nintendo’s current list before planning a particular transfer; support and transfer rules can change independently of the games themselves.

HOME should not be the reason to choose one game over another. First choose the experience you want—Kanto nostalgia, a traditional remake, a modern mainline region or exploration—then use HOME to organize eligible Pokémon where the current compatibility rules allow it.

Buying and edition considerations

These recommendations describe the games, not a guaranteed current price or stock situation. Nintendo Switch catalog listings, physical availability, regional editions and retailer pricing can change, so verify the edition and region at the time of purchase. A product page may list a game even when a particular physical package, used copy or digital promotion is temporarily unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a physical purchase, search the complete product name together with “Nintendo Switch” so you do not accidentally select a Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS or older regional listing. That distinction is especially important for Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl because their names closely resemble the original DS releases.

How the 2026 Switch release changes the context

Nintendo investor material dated 2026 states that FireRed and LeafGreen released for Nintendo Switch on February 27, 2026 and exceeded four million units in global cumulative sell-through during their first six weeks. That figure is a publisher-reported worldwide result for that release window, not a guarantee of current sales, availability or player population.

If you are specifically looking for a Switch version of FireRed or LeafGreen, verify the current Nintendo catalog because release listings and regional availability can change. The comparisons above remain useful for deciding which other Switch Pokémon experience best complements a Kanto playthrough.
