Jellyfin is the best default Plex alternative for a private, self-hosted library if you want open-source software, control over your server, and no premium feature tier. Emby is the closest like-for-like replacement for a conventional media-server experience, Kodi is a local or network playback center rather than a central server, and Universal Media Server is a focused choice for DLNA/UPnP devices. The right choice depends less on the brand name than on your TV and client support, Direct Play capability, transcoding and HDR needs, remote-access plans, and licensing priorities.

Which Plex alternative should you choose?

Start with the architecture you actually need. If one computer or NAS should organize a library and stream it to several phones, televisions, streaming boxes, or consoles, choose a server platform such as Jellyfin or Emby. If the playback device itself is the center of the experience and you are comfortable opening local folders or network shares, Kodi may be a better fit. If older televisions or consoles only expose DLNA or UPnP, Universal Media Server can solve that narrower problem with less overhead.

Option Core architecture Best fit Licensing and cost position Important checks
Jellyfin Central server streams to apps Open-source, self-hosted private libraries Free software; project states there are no premium licenses or features Exact client availability, hardware for transcoding, HDR tone-mapping behavior
Emby Central server streams to apps Polished, conventional personal-media-server workflow Proprietary project; some advanced capabilities may require a paid tier Current feature matrix, paid boundaries, device apps and transcoding needs
Kodi Playback and media-center app reading local or network media One-room or household playback from a television or connected computer Free and open source Network-share setup, metadata management, multi-user and remote-client requirements
Universal Media Server DLNA/UPnP server Older smart TVs, consoles and simple network players Not stated in the supplied material Device codec support, discovery and metadata capabilities

No platform name guarantees support for every television, phone, console or streaming box. Confirm that the exact client application exists for your hardware before moving a library or buying a server.

Jellyfin: the strongest open-source, self-hosted choice

What Jellyfin provides

Jellyfin describes itself as “a Free Software Media System that puts you in control of managing and streaming your media.” Its server runs on hardware you control, catalogs your files, and presents them through client applications on end-user devices. The project describes Jellyfin as an alternative to proprietary Emby and Plex and aims to remain Free/Libre and Open Source Software.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a private library, that control has practical consequences. You decide where files live, which accounts can see them, how remote access is exposed, and when the server is updated. The project’s About material says there are “no strings attached, no premium licenses or features, and no hidden agendas.” That makes Jellyfin the clearest match for readers who do not want a subscription or a locked advanced-feature tier.

Where Jellyfin requires more owner work

You install and maintain both the server and the clients. Backups, operating-system updates, storage expansion, network security and troubleshooting are your responsibility rather than a hosted provider’s. Device support also varies by exact hardware and operating-system version, so check the client catalog for each television, mobile device, streaming box or console you plan to use.

How Jellyfin handles playback

Jellyfin documentation separates three behaviors:

  • Direct Play: the original file is delivered because the client supports its container, video, audio and subtitles. This uses the least server CPU.
  • Direct Stream: the video remains untouched while an incompatible component, such as an audio track, is converted.
  • Full transcoding: the server converts the media into a format the client can play, consuming substantially more CPU or GPU resources.

HDR needs special attention. Jellyfin documents tone-mapping HDR video to SDR when transcoding and states that HDR-to-HDR tone-mapping is not supported. A client that can Direct Play the original HDR file may therefore preserve HDR, while a transcode path can produce SDR output and require capable hardware for acceptable results.

Controlling resource use by user

Administrators can configure users individually and allow or prevent audio and video transcoding. Blocking transcoding can protect a small server from overload, but it also means a user whose device cannot play the file will receive an error or be unable to watch it. Allowing transcoding improves compatibility at the cost of CPU/GPU load, power use and possible HDR conversion.

Emby: the closest conventional server replacement

Why Emby appeals to Plex users

Emby Server follows the familiar centralized model: it organizes a personal media library, keeps content private, and prepares it for playback on multiple devices. Official documentation lists mobile downloads, hardware-accelerated transcoding and free apps among its bonus features. That makes Emby a sensible option when you want a polished, guided server workflow and broad device applications.

Verify paid feature boundaries before committing

Emby’s documentation describes the capabilities above as bonus features rather than universally free functions. The current feature matrix and licensing pages should be checked for the edition you intend to run, particularly if you need hardware-accelerated transcoding, mobile playback or other advanced functions. Do not assume that an app being free to download means every server capability is unlocked.

Emby is proprietary, so it is a weaker fit than Jellyfin for readers whose primary requirement is auditable open-source software or an explicit no-premium-features policy. It is not automatically better or worse technically; client compatibility, transcoding requirements and your licensing preference decide the outcome.

Kodi: a different architecture, not a drop-in server

How Kodi works

Kodi is a free, open-source media-center and playback application. It can read media stored locally or exposed through network shares, and compatible backends can provide live-TV features. The playback device—often a television-connected computer or box—is the main interface.

When Kodi is the better fit

  • You mainly watch in one room and want a rich ten-foot interface on that device.
  • Your files already reside on a NAS or computer share that Kodi can mount.
  • You prefer the playback device to do the decoding instead of sending every stream through a central application server.

When Kodi is the wrong replacement

Kodi is less suitable when one server must manage accounts, metadata and synchronized access for many remote clients. You generally assemble network-share permissions and library settings on each Kodi installation rather than administering every device from one server dashboard. It therefore complements a file server in some homes but does not reproduce the centralized, multi-client workflow of Jellyfin or Emby.

Universal Media Server: choose it for DLNA or UPnP

Universal Media Server belongs in the special-purpose category. Its strongest use case is sending media over DLNA or UPnP to network devices that discover a server automatically. That can help older smart TVs, game consoles and simple network media players whose built-in software does not offer a modern Jellyfin or Emby client.

DLNA compatibility does not guarantee that a device will play every file. Verify the television or console’s supported containers, video and audio codecs, subtitle formats and maximum resolution. Also check what metadata the device displays: a basic DLNA browser may show folders and filenames rather than the richer poster, collection and user experience of a dedicated media-server app.

Compare the decisions that matter before migrating

Server versus local playback

Jellyfin and Emby centralize library scanning, user accounts and streaming. Kodi reads from local or network storage at each playback location. Universal Media Server exposes a DLNA catalog. Choose the central-server model if phones, multiple televisions or remote users need one consistent library; choose Kodi when the room’s playback device is the priority.

Privacy and licensing

With a self-hosted server, files can remain on your hardware and you control accounts and network exposure. Jellyfin explicitly positions itself as free/open-source software with no premium licenses or features. Emby is proprietary and may gate advanced functions behind a paid tier. Kodi is free/open source but does not by itself provide the same central account and remote-streaming service. Universal Media Server is best evaluated as a protocol-focused utility; the supplied material does not establish a specific licensing or premium-feature policy.

Client applications

Make a device list before choosing: television model and operating system, phones and tablets, streaming boxes, game consoles and web browsers. Search each project’s current client documentation for those exact platforms. A server that is ideal on a computer may be impractical if your television lacks a native client and would require an additional streaming device.

Direct Play, transcoding and HDR

Direct Play is the lowest-load path. Transcoding is a compatibility feature, not a guarantee: a server must have enough CPU/GPU capacity for the number of simultaneous conversions, and the client must support the resulting format. HDR introduces another variable because Jellyfin documents HDR-to-SDR tone-mapping during transcoding rather than HDR-to-HDR conversion.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Remote access

Remote viewing requires a reachable server, an account system and a network design that you can secure and maintain. Test local playback first, then configure remote access only after you understand which ports, reverse-proxy or VPN arrangement your network permits. The comparison material does not establish one universal remote-access method for these platforms, so follow the current documentation for your chosen server and router.

Library management

Central servers scan folders and present metadata across clients. Kodi’s library is configured on each installation, while DLNA clients may expose little more than folders and filenames. If multiple household members need separate permissions or consistent collections, a central server generally reduces repeated setup.

Size the hardware around Direct Play and transcoding

Storage and network capacity

A private library needs a host: a desktop, mini-PC or NAS can provide storage and run the server. Select capacity from the size of your current files plus growth and a backup plan, not from the application’s name. Wired Ethernet between the server and main playback devices reduces avoidable congestion; wireless performance depends on the access point, distance and household traffic.

Why simultaneous streams change the requirement

One Direct Play stream may be easy for modest hardware. Several users watching incompatible files at once can trigger multiple video and audio conversions. Count the maximum concurrent viewers, identify whether their devices can Direct Play your common formats, and leave headroom for library scans, backups and other server tasks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hardware acceleration and HDR

If transcoding is expected, confirm that the host’s processor or GPU supports the codecs and operating-system drivers used by your server. Hardware acceleration can reduce CPU load, but it does not remove compatibility limits or guarantee HDR preservation. Jellyfin’s documented HDR behavior means you should test representative HDR files on the clients you actually own.

Hardware you may need

A NAS enclosure can combine storage and server hosting, but its suitability depends on three independent factors: drive capacity, processor/GPU support for your expected conversions, and network connectivity. A large enclosure with weak transcoding support may be fine for Direct Play and frustrating for remote users. Conversely, powerful hardware with insufficient redundant storage will not protect a growing library.

A practical migration plan

  1. Inventory your clients. Record exact television, phone, streaming-box and console models, then verify a current app or protocol path for each one.
  2. Measure your library. Note total storage, largest files, common containers, video and audio codecs, subtitle formats and HDR titles.
  3. Choose the architecture. Pick Jellyfin or Emby for centralized multi-device access, Kodi for local/network playback, or Universal Media Server when DLNA/UPnP is the deciding requirement.
  4. Prepare the host. Create media folders, a separate configuration location, reliable storage and a backup destination. Use a wired network connection where practical.
  5. Install and scan a test library. Begin with representative files, including one HDR title, one subtitle-heavy title and the formats your household watches most.
  6. Test Direct Play. Play each sample on every important client and inspect the server’s playback details to see whether the original file is delivered.
  7. Test conversion deliberately. Use a client that cannot play one sample natively, then watch CPU/GPU use, output quality, audio selection and subtitle behavior. Confirm what happens to HDR.
  8. Create least-privilege users. Give each household member only the libraries and transcoding permissions they need. Restrict or disable transcoding for accounts that should not consume server resources.
  9. Add remote access last. Secure accounts, updates and network entry points before exposing the service beyond your home. Test from an external connection rather than assuming local success proves remote readiness.
  10. Move in stages. Keep the old setup available while copying metadata, validating playback and confirming that backups and restore procedures work.

Troubleshoot the failures you are most likely to see

The app cannot find the server

  • Confirm the server process is running and the host has a stable local address.
  • Check that the client and server are on the intended network and that local firewall rules permit the service.
  • For a television without a native client, use a supported streaming box, web client or DLNA path instead of assuming the television can install any server app.

A file buffers or playback stops

  • Check whether the session is Direct Play, Direct Stream or full transcoding.
  • If transcoding is occurring, inspect CPU/GPU saturation and reduce concurrent conversions or enable suitable hardware acceleration.
  • If the file should Direct Play, compare its container, codecs, audio tracks and subtitles with the client’s documented support.

HDR looks washed out or becomes SDR

Determine whether the client forced transcoding. Jellyfin documents HDR-to-SDR tone-mapping for that path and does not support HDR-to-HDR tone-mapping. Prefer a client that can Direct Play the HDR source, or accept SDR output and size hardware for the conversion.

Remote playback works locally but not outside the home

Local success proves only that the application and files work on the home network. Recheck the chosen server’s remote-access instructions, router policy, account authentication and external test path. Avoid exposing an unmaintained service simply to bypass a client-compatibility problem.

Bottom-line decision framework

  • Choose Jellyfin when open-source licensing, self-hosting control and avoiding a premium feature tier are your top priorities.
  • Choose Emby when you want the closest conventional server workflow and accept proprietary software and the need to verify paid feature boundaries.
  • Choose Kodi when each playback device can reach local or network files and you do not need one central server to coordinate many clients.
  • Choose Universal Media Server when DLNA/UPnP discovery on older televisions, consoles or basic network players is the requirement that decides everything else.

Whichever route you take, validate the exact client, test representative files, and plan for the difference between Direct Play and transcoding before you migrate the full library.
