Cyberpunk 2077 is the closest modern-city substitute for GTA 6. Its dense urban setting, vehicles, side activities and build-based action-RPG systems best match the appeal of returning to Vice City. Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 for slower, deeply simulated immersion; Ghost of Tsushima for cinematic swordplay; Horizon Forbidden West for colorful science-fiction exploration; or Forza Horizon 6 when spectacular driving and rendering matter more than a crime story.
Xbox currently lists Grand Theft Auto VI as “Available November 19, 2026.” Release dates and platform listings can change, so check the current Xbox and Rockstar listings before making plans.
How these games compare with what GTA 6 promises
GTA 6 is set in Leonida, including Vice City, according to Rockstar’s official game page. That makes a modern, populous city the most obvious target for players looking for a temporary replacement. None of the games below reproduces GTA’s exact combination of open-world crime, satire, driving and character switching, so the useful question is which part of that formula matters most to you.

Choose this game when you want a highly populated city, modern vehicles and a large amount of optional urban content. Do not choose it solely because you want an identical driving model or the same kind of mission structure as GTA.
2. Red Dead Redemption 2: the strongest slow-burn world immersion
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the best pick for players who care more about believable world behavior than about a modern skyline. It is a Rockstar-made open world, making it a valuable comparison point for the studio’s approach to environmental detail, incidental encounters and character-driven storytelling. The setting is a western frontier, however, and its pace is deliberately slower than a city-based crime game.
What makes its world feel unusually lived-in
- Travel is part of the experience: Roads, trails, rivers and settlements create meaningful distances rather than treating the map as a menu of instant destinations.
- Natural detail: Wildlife, changing weather, vegetation and varied terrain make the landscape worth observing even when no mission marker is nearby.

The trade-off for GTA fans
You will spend more time riding, walking and managing the rhythm of travel than you would in a modern urban sandbox. Gunfights and robberies are present, but the game’s identity is built around an evolving western ensemble and a carefully observed environment. There are no neon avenues, contemporary traffic systems or futuristic city districts.

4. Horizon Forbidden West: science-fiction scenery and machine encounters
Horizon Forbidden West follows Aloy into a far-future Earth threatened by machines and other dangers. It is the strongest recommendation here for players who want colorful vistas, varied traversal and a large wilderness rather than a city. The world’s visual identity comes from the contrast between natural landscapes and enormous mechanical creatures.
Its strongest visual and gameplay features
- Varied environments: The Forbidden West offers changing terrain and broad sightlines that make exploration itself a visual reward.
- Machine encounters: Combat asks you to study mechanical opponents, identify weaknesses and select suitable ranged tools.

5. Forza Horizon 6: the driving-first graphics showcase
Forza Horizon 6 is the specialist option for readers whose main reason for waiting for GTA 6 is the pleasure of driving through a beautiful open world. It puts cars, roads, events and the sensation of crossing a large varied landscape ahead of character-led crime storytelling.
What the PC graphics claim actually means
NVIDIA reports that compatible GeForce RTX 50-series desktop GPUs can pair 4K resolution and maximum settings with ray tracing, DLSS Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation in Forza Horizon 6. Treat that as a conditional hardware-and-settings capability, not a universal performance guarantee. Your frame rate will depend on the exact GPU, processor, resolution, ray-tracing options, upscaling mode and other settings.
Why it works while waiting
- Driving is the main event: You spend your time selecting cars, learning roads and competing in events rather than treating a vehicle as transportation between shooting missions.
- Visual variety: A large, varied landscape gives the game a different kind of open-world spectacle from a dense city.
- Technical showcase: Supported PC hardware can make advanced lighting, upscaling and frame-generation features part of the experience.
Choose Forza Horizon 6 if the phrase “high-end graphics” primarily means cars, reflections, lighting and smooth motion. Choose one of the other four games if you need a strong character arc, gunplay, swordplay or a crime-focused narrative.

Which game should you play on PS5, Xbox or PC?
There is no single platform winner because the relevant edition can vary by country, hardware generation and storefront. Use the following decision process instead of assuming that every edition has the same features.
- Start with your preferred setting. Select a modern city for Cyberpunk 2077, a western frontier for Red Dead Redemption 2, historical Japan for Ghost of Tsushima, a far-future wilderness for Horizon Forbidden West, or a driving-focused landscape for Forza Horizon 6.
- Check the exact platform listing. Search the current PlayStation, Xbox or PC store page for your country. Confirm that the edition supports your console generation or PC operating system and that any included expansion or bonus content is clearly listed.
- Match the game to your tolerance for pace. Red Dead Redemption 2 asks for the most patience during travel and story scenes. Forza Horizon 6 can be entered primarily for short driving sessions. Cyberpunk 2077, Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Forbidden West sit between those extremes but emphasize different combat systems.
- For PC, verify the graphics path. Compare your hardware with the game’s current requirements and check whether features such as ray tracing, DLSS Super Resolution or Multi Frame Generation are supported by your GPU. Do not infer performance from a feature name alone.
