Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition is the closest overall substitute for GTA IV. It combines a compact modern city, an undercover-crime story, driving, firearms and unusually satisfying hand-to-hand combat. If hacking is more important than gunplay, choose Watch Dogs 2; for a slower period gangster drama, choose Mafia III: Definitive Edition. Red Dead Redemption 2 is the best choice for world detail and emotional storytelling, while Saints Row, Cyberpunk 2077, Payday 2 and L.A. Noire each preserve a different part of the GTA IV experience.

What makes a game feel like GTA IV?

GTA IV is difficult to replace because its appeal comes from several systems working together: a believable city, criminal missions, vehicle travel, shooting, open-ended exploration and a serious story about people trapped in organized crime. No alternative duplicates all of those elements, so the useful question is which part you want to keep.

  • Grounded crime drama: realistic characters, criminal organizations and a serious tone.
  • Modern-city freedom: streets to explore, traffic, buildings and activities outside missions.
  • Driving and gunplay: getting around the city is part of the game rather than a loading-screen transition.
  • Systemic interaction: hacking, environmental tools or other ways to approach an objective.
  • Long-form storytelling: a campaign with consequences instead of disconnected arcade stages.

The ranking below treats those qualities separately. A game can be an excellent GTA IV alternative while being a poor match for one specific feature, such as contemporary setting or free-roaming crime.

1. Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition — the best overall GTA IV-style game

Sleeping Dogs is the strongest choice when you want the complete package: an urban crime narrative, a city that is compact enough to learn, driving between missions, gunplay when situations escalate and a combat system built around martial arts. You play an undercover police officer embedded in Hong Kong’s Triad underworld, giving the campaign a built-in conflict between law enforcement and criminal loyalty.

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition- PlayStation 4
  • A mature and gritty undercover cop drama, set in a high tension underWorld where every action is a risk that could blow Your cover
  • Seamless explosive action fueled by a Mix of deadly martial arts, intense gunfights and brutal Takedowns
  • Epic high speed thrills: Burn up the streets as you ram other cars and drive recklessly while Shooting Your way through the narrow streets of Hong Kong
  • Hong Kong is Your Playground: Enter illegal races, gamble on cock fights, or kick back with some karaoke
  • Includes total of 24 pieces of downloadable content including the story extending episode “Year of the Snake” and the horror themed add on “Nightmare in North Point”

Why it is the closest fit

  • Urban structure: Hong Kong is presented as a dense playground rather than a collection of disconnected levels. Shops, traffic and side activities make movement through the city meaningful.
  • Crime-story focus: The undercover premise supports betrayals, competing loyalties and the personal pressure that defines a grounded crime drama.
  • Physical combat: Martial-arts fights add a close-range option that GTA IV does not emphasize, while firearms still appear when missions demand them.
  • Definitive Edition content: The Xbox product listing says this 2014 edition includes all 24 previously available downloadable-content extensions, including Year of the Snake and Nightmare in North Point.

Trade-offs

Its Hong Kong setting and martial-arts emphasis make it distinct rather than a literal GTA clone. The city is more compact, and the tone occasionally moves away from GTA IV’s bleak New York-inspired realism. Those differences are advantages if you want a more focused campaign and more varied melee encounters.

Platforms and edition notes

GamesRadar lists the Definitive Edition for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The official Xbox listing identifies the 2014 release for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Store availability, backward compatibility and cloud access can vary by region, so check the exact listing for your console before buying.

2. Watch Dogs 2 — the best modern open-city alternative

Choose Watch Dogs 2 if your favorite GTA IV moments involve manipulating the city itself rather than simply shooting through missions. Its San Francisco setting is built around hackable infrastructure: traffic systems, cameras, vehicles and other connected objects can be turned into tools for infiltration or escape.

What carries over from GTA IV

  • Contemporary city exploration: You travel through a recognizable modern metropolis with vehicles and mission locations spread across urban neighborhoods.
  • Multiple approaches: Hacking lets you scout, distract, disable or create opportunities before entering a restricted area.
  • Driving and free movement: Vehicles remain a practical way to reach objectives and improvise during pursuits.

Where it differs

Watch Dogs 2 is lighter and more playful than GTA IV, and its protagonists are hackers rather than traditional gangsters. The campaign is organized around operations and technology-driven objectives, so the criminal underworld is less central than the social and political uses of surveillance systems. It is the right recommendation when “open-world crime game” means a reactive modern city, not necessarily a realistic gangster story.

Platforms

GameSpot lists Watch Dogs 2 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Confirm the edition and storefront requirements for newer consoles, since platform support can differ between generations.

3. Mafia III: Definitive Edition — the best grounded gangster drama

Mafia III: Definitive Edition is aimed at players who want organized crime, period atmosphere and a serious revenge narrative more than constant sandbox experimentation. Its campaign follows a methodical rise through a criminal empire, with territory, alliances and retaliation providing the structure.

Why it suits GTA IV fans

  • Serious crime tone: The story treats criminal power, loyalty and revenge as the main subject rather than using them only as a backdrop for comedy.
  • Period setting: The historical city gives driving, weapons and social encounters a different texture from a contemporary open world.
  • Mission-led open world: You still move between objectives through a city, but the campaign’s emphasis is on dismantling rival operations and building control.

Trade-offs

Mafia III is slower and more repetitive in its territory-clearing structure than GTA IV. Its deliberate pace is a benefit if you prefer a focused gangster saga; it is less suitable if you mainly want spontaneous city activities or a broad variety of side systems.

Platforms

The documented release platforms are PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Check the current store page for the edition available on your console and for any backward-compatibility requirements.

4. Red Dead Redemption 2 — the best story and world

Red Dead Redemption 2 is not a modern-city crime game, but it is the strongest alternative when what you value most in GTA IV is freedom, detail and a long-form outlaw narrative. Its early-20th-century Western setting replaces traffic and skyscrapers with frontier towns, wilderness and changing social order.

Why it belongs on this list

  • World density: The environment is designed for unplanned encounters, exploration and small discoveries away from mission markers.
  • Emotional storytelling: The outlaw story develops over a long campaign with relationships and consequences that make the gang feel like a living group.
  • Rockstar-style freedom: Travel, side activities and emergent trouble often matter as much as the next scripted objective.

Trade-offs

There is no modern metropolis, urban traffic network or contemporary criminal economy. Movement is slower, the setting is historical and the game asks for more patience than GTA IV. Select it for atmosphere and narrative depth, not for a one-to-one city replacement. Platform support varies by edition and generation; verify the current PlayStation, Xbox or PC listing before purchase.

5. Saints Row — the best choice for chaotic sandbox action

Saints Row preserves the open-city action formula while intentionally abandoning GTA IV’s grounded tone. Its appeal is exaggerated mayhem: outrageous missions, stunts, weapons and activities that treat the city as a playground for spectacle.

Choose it when

  • You want comedy and escalation instead of bleak crime drama.
  • You care more about creative destruction and unusual activities than realistic criminal procedure.
  • You want a game that rewards experimentation with vehicles, weapons and set pieces.

What you give up

The heightened tone reduces the sense of realism that makes GTA IV distinctive. Character drama and criminal consequences are present in a more playful form, so this is an alternative to GTA’s sandbox structure rather than its mood. Edition and platform availability differ across Saints Row releases; check the specific title and store listing.

6. Cyberpunk 2077 — the best RPG variation

Cyberpunk 2077 turns the open-world crime formula into a role-playing game set in Night City. You drive between districts, accept gigs and confront criminal factions, but your character build, equipment and dialogue choices shape how those encounters work.

Why it is a useful alternative

  • Dense futuristic city: Night City offers a strongly defined urban setting with distinct neighborhoods and a constant sense of vertical scale.
  • Flexible combat: Builds and abilities let you specialize rather than relying on one fixed shooting style.
  • Crime-adjacent stories: Gigs and faction conflicts provide the criminal atmosphere many GTA players seek.

Trade-offs

Its science-fiction setting, progression systems and branching role-playing structure make it less immediate than GTA IV. Driving is important, but exploration and combat are filtered through character statistics and equipment. Choose it when you want a city crime game with RPG depth, not a conventional crime sandbox.

7. Payday 2 — the best co-op heist option

Payday 2 focuses on the part of GTA IV that most directly involves planning robberies: assembling a crew, choosing an approach and surviving the consequences when stealth fails. It is built around individual heist missions and squad coordination rather than continuous free-roaming city life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its strengths

  • Co-operative planning: Players divide roles, manage equipment and coordinate movement.
  • Stealth-or-assault decisions: A quiet plan can collapse into a running gun battle, creating tension that a scripted mission cannot always provide.
  • Replayable operations: The focus is on repeating and refining heists rather than completing one long open-world story.

Trade-offs

There is less free-roaming exploration, character drama and vehicle travel than in GTA IV. Payday 2 is the right answer to “Which game lets me pull off robberies with friends?” rather than “Which game gives me another Liberty City?”

8. L.A. Noire — the best detective alternative

L.A. Noire shares an open-city period setting and crime subject matter, but its role reversal is important: you investigate cases instead of building a criminal empire. Searching scenes, examining evidence and interrogating suspects are the central activities.

Who should play it

  • Players who prefer clues, interviews and case logic to open-ended shooting.
  • Readers attracted to historical city atmosphere and a more deliberate pace.
  • Anyone who wants crime storytelling without requiring a traditional gangster sandbox.

Trade-offs

The city is primarily a framework for investigations, and the freedom to cause criminal chaos is much narrower than in GTA IV. Its value is in detective work and period storytelling, not systemic mayhem.

  4. Want the richest world and longest emotional arc? Choose Red Dead Redemption 2.
  5. Want comedy and destruction? Choose Saints Row.

Check the exact edition before buying

Platform support is not uniform across these games or across console generations. The clearest documented examples are Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with the Xbox listing also covering Xbox Series X|S and cloud play; Watch Dogs 2 and Mafia III: Definitive Edition are documented on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Other entries can have separate editions, upgrades or backward-compatibility rules. Search the current first-party store listing for your region and hardware, and confirm whether the page describes the original release, a remaster or a definitive edition.

Match the tone before the feature list

A game can have cars, guns and an open map yet still feel wrong after GTA IV if its tone does not fit. Sleeping Dogs and Mafia III stay closest to serious crime fiction. Watch Dogs 2 is more playful and technology-centered. Saints Row is intentionally comic. Cyberpunk 2077 is mature but speculative. Red Dead Redemption 2 is serious and criminal, although its frontier setting changes the entire rhythm. Payday 2 is built around co-op objectives, and L.A. Noire is investigative.

Final recommendation

Start with Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition if you want one purchase that retains the most GTA IV ingredients: a dense city, undercover criminal drama, driving, firearms and a distinctive close-combat system. Move to Watch Dogs 2 for modern urban systems, Mafia III: Definitive Edition for a grounded period gangster story and Red Dead Redemption 2 for the deepest world and outlaw narrative. The remaining choices are purposeful variations: Saints Row for chaos, Cyberpunk 2077 for RPG structure, Payday 2 for co-op heists and L.A. Noire for detective work.
