The best open-source alternative depends on the job you need to replace. Choose Joplin for a conventional notebook library, Markdown notes, web clipping, offline access, and documented Evernote or OneNote migration. Choose a linked-note tool such as Logseq when outlining and backlinks matter more than folders. For a Notion-style workspace, AppFlowy or AFFiNE are the names to investigate, but verify their current database, collaboration, hosting, and license details before moving important work. For privacy-focused notes, Standard Notes is a candidate that also requires a current check of its license and plan boundaries.
Do not treat “open source” as a single product-wide guarantee. A client, server, synchronization service, and protocol can have different licenses. Compare the exact components you will run, the data format they store, how synchronization works, what is encrypted, and whether you can export your notes without the original app.

What “open source” should mean in this comparison
Ask four separate licensing questions instead of relying on a marketing label:

- Client: Can you inspect, build, and redistribute the desktop or mobile application under its stated license?
- Server: If synchronization or collaboration requires a server, is that server code available under the same license?
- Protocol and format: Are the sync protocol and file format documented well enough for another implementation?
- Hosted service: Does using the project’s hosted service add terms or features that are not present in the self-hosted software?
A project can have an open client but a proprietary hosted service, or an open synchronization component alongside a differently licensed server. Record the license and version for every component you plan to operate. This matters if you need to self-host, audit encryption, maintain a fork, or migrate away later.
Joplin: the most concrete general-purpose replacement
Joplin is a free, open-source note-taking and to-do application built around Markdown notes, notebooks, tags, search, and offline use. Data is stored on the device, and desktop and mobile applications are listed for Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, and iOS. A web clipper is available for Firefox and Chrome. That combination makes it the clearest starting point when your current app is primarily a searchable notebook and clipping archive rather than a database-driven workspace.
How its workflow differs from workspace apps
Joplin organizes information into notebooks and notes instead of treating every page as a block-based database record. Markdown is the durable representation, while attached resources such as images and files travel with the note. This is a good fit when you want readable text files, predictable offline access, and a relatively simple hierarchy. It is less appropriate if your essential workflow depends on complex relational databases, kanban views, or a large collaborative whiteboard.

Because the applications keep a local copy, you can read and edit notes without an active connection. Synchronization is a separate decision: local storage does not automatically mean that every device is synchronized. Set up and test a synchronization target before you depend on a second device.
Moving from Evernote to Joplin
Joplin documents importing an Evernote ENEX export. The importer can bring in notes, tags, resources, and metadata. It converts HTML formatting to Markdown, so the result is not a pixel-for-pixel copy of the Evernote interface.
What normally survives and what can change
- Basic formatting is described as close to lossless, but colors, font sizes, and font faces are not imported.
- Images and other resources can be included in the imported notes.
- Recognition data associated with Evernote images is not preserved directly. Joplin’s OCR may recreate searchable text afterward, but treat that as a separate process.
- Links between notes may be guessed from note titles. Duplicate titles or changed titles can produce broken or incorrect links.
Safer ENEX migration procedure
- In Evernote, export one representative notebook as an ENEX file. Include notes with attachments, tables, internal links, tags, and unusual formatting.
- Install Joplin on a computer with enough free storage for the export and a backup copy.
- Use Joplin’s import command for Evernote ENEX and select the test file, not your complete archive.
- Compare note counts, tags, attachments, tables, links, and a sample of older notes. Pay special attention to duplicate titles and OCR-dependent searches.
- Export or back up the successful test result before importing the remaining notebooks.
- Repeat the check after the full import. Keep the original ENEX files until you have verified that your new archive opens and exports correctly.
A small test import is essential because the documented conversion caveats affect presentation and links, not just the number of notes.

Moving from OneNote to Joplin
Joplin documents two OneNote routes: importing from OneNote Online exports and importing from the Windows desktop application. The exact route depends on your OneNote version and platform.
Online export route
The online procedure requires a notebook stored in OneDrive. The documentation warns that it may not work for notebooks larger than approximately 2–4 GB. Treat that range as a practical limit to check against the current guide, not as a guarantee for every account or export.
Windows desktop route
The documented desktop method requires Joplin 3.5.5 or later and the OneNote Windows desktop app. Importing a .onepkg package is documented as Windows-only. Version requirements can change, so check the current Joplin instructions immediately before migration.
OneNote migration checklist
- Identify whether the source is OneNote Online or the Windows desktop application.
- Export one small notebook or section using the route supported by your source version.
- Confirm that your installed Joplin version meets the current requirement for the selected route.
- Import the sample and inspect page hierarchy, images, handwritten content, tables, and internal links.
- Only after the sample is acceptable, process the rest of the notebooks in batches and retain the original exports.
Do not promise yourself a seamless transfer: OneNote’s page structures and drawing features do not map perfectly to Markdown notes.
Joplin synchronization, encryption, and self-hosting choices
Joplin lists several synchronization targets: Joplin Cloud, Nextcloud, S3, WebDAV, Dropbox, OneDrive, and a local filesystem. Synchronization runs in the background after configuration. Select a target based on control, maintenance effort, and where you already keep backups.

End-to-end encryption
Joplin supports end-to-end encryption for synchronized data. Its technical documentation says items are encrypted when serialized for synchronization. This protects the synchronized payload, but it does not make every local operating-system file or every third-party service automatically encrypted. Confirm what is encrypted at rest on each device and at the chosen storage target.

The master password is critical. If it is forgotten, recovery of content encrypted with that password is not possible according to the technical documentation. Store the password in a secure password manager and test recovery procedures before you encrypt a large archive.
Hosted versus self-managed services
Joplin Cloud provides hosted synchronization, publishing, and notebook sharing. Joplin Server Business is described as a self-hosted organizational service with team features. These are different operational choices: hosted synchronization reduces server maintenance, while self-hosting gives your organization more control but adds updates, backups, monitoring, and access management. Prices are not stated here, so check the current service pages before budgeting.
Export and portability: test the round trip
Joplin documents several export forms:
- JEX: described as lossless for Joplin notes and metadata and capable of re-importing into Joplin.
- Raw directory: useful when you want the underlying exported files rather than a single archive.
- HTML and PDF: convenient for reading or sharing, but not equivalent to a fully editable project backup.
“Lossless” in this context means preserving Joplin’s own notes and metadata for Joplin re-import. It does not prove that another application will reproduce every notebook feature. Test an export by opening it on a separate device or importing it into a clean profile. Check attachments, tags, note order, links, and any custom metadata your workflow depends on.

Logseq is commonly compared with linked-note applications and is a natural candidate when your notes are outlines connected by backlinks rather than documents stored in folders. That model can suit daily journals, research trails, and knowledge graphs.
However, current details about Logseq’s file handling, license, synchronization, and mobile support should be verified in its own documentation before migration. Those details determine whether your existing Markdown files remain usable, whether multiple devices can edit safely, and whether self-hosting is realistic for your setup. If backlinks are the reason you are leaving a conventional notebook app, create a small graph first and test link resolution, attachment handling, and export.
Notion-style alternatives: AppFlowy and AFFiNE
AppFlowy and AFFiNE are often presented as workspace-oriented alternatives involving documents, tables, or whiteboards. They are worth investigating when your Notion use is built around pages that combine text with structured blocks rather than a simple note hierarchy.

Do not assume current feature parity. Before choosing either project, verify:
- Whether the database views and formulas you use are implemented.
- Whether real-time collaboration and permissions match your team’s needs.
- Which desktop, mobile, and web clients are supported.
- Whether offline editing and conflict resolution work the way you expect.
- What can be imported from Notion and what can be exported in a portable format.
- Which client, server, and hosted-service components are open under which licenses.
A workspace replacement can look similar in screenshots while behaving very differently when you need recurring templates, relational links, large attachments, or simultaneous editing.
Privacy-first notes: evaluating Standard Notes
Standard Notes appears in comparison coverage as a privacy-oriented note application. If encryption and data minimization are your primary requirements, evaluate it by the exact plan and implementation rather than by the label alone.
Confirm the current license, encryption design, supported clients, synchronization behavior, export formats, and which features require a paid plan. Ask whether the encryption protects note content only or also titles, tags, attachments, and search indexes. A privacy choice is useful only when your backup and recovery procedures preserve access to the encrypted data.
Anytype and the limits of a blanket “fully open-source” claim
Anytype appears in open-source comparison lists, but comparison sources characterize its client and server licensing differently. Avoid calling the entire product fully open source without checking the current terms for every component. If you are considering it for local-first or distributed notes, document where data is stored, how peers synchronize, which services are optional, and how you can export a complete archive.
Comparison axes that prevent a bad migration

A practical migration plan for any note application
- Inventory your current use. Separate ordinary text, attachments, tags, internal links, databases, whiteboards, handwriting, and shared notebooks.
- Choose a representative sample. Include the oldest notes, the largest attachments, unusual formatting, and the links your team actually follows.
- Export before installing anything else. Keep the original export files and a read-only backup in a second location.
- Run a test import. Measure what survives, not just whether the importer reports success.
- Test daily actions. Capture a note, search it, edit it offline, attach a file, follow a link, and synchronize from a second device.
- Test recovery. Restore an export, reset a client, and confirm that encryption credentials and backups are usable.
- Migrate in batches. Keep a simple record of which notebooks or spaces are complete and which still require manual repair.
- Leave the old system read-only. Do not delete the source until you have completed an export and recovery test in the replacement.
Common failure modes and fixes
Formatting looks different
Markdown conversion cannot preserve every font, color, or layout rule. Keep the original export for reference, then manually repair only notes where visual formatting carries meaning.

Internal links open the wrong note
Title-based link guessing can fail when titles are duplicated or changed. Rename duplicates before migration where practical, then audit high-value links after import.
Attachments are missing
Check the export itself first. If the source export omitted resources, the destination cannot recreate them. Re-export a small sample with attachments and compare file counts.
Synchronization creates conflicting copies
Stop editing on multiple devices, preserve both copies, and identify which synchronization target and account each client uses. Resolve one note at a time before resuming background sync.

You cannot decrypt an archive
Do not reset or overwrite the only encrypted copy. Locate the stored master password and confirm that the same account, profile, and synchronization target are being used. For Joplin, forgotten encryption passwords cannot be recovered for content encrypted with that password.
Bottom line: match the app to the job
Start with Joplin when you need the most documented path away from Evernote or OneNote, especially if Markdown, notebooks, clipping, offline access, and optional synchronization cover your requirements. Start with Logseq for an outline-and-link workflow, investigate AppFlowy or AFFiNE for workspace features, and scrutinize Standard Notes or Anytype when privacy or local-first design is the priority. In every case, run a representative import, verify export and recovery, and inspect the license of the client, server, and synchronization layer separately.
