The Bose Ultra Open Earbuds remain our overall pick from the original months-long listening test because they combine unusually comfortable clip-on construction, balanced sound, reliable physical controls, and good compatibility with glasses. They are not the right choice for everyone, though: they are expensive, do not provide traditional noise cancellation, and cannot isolate you from a loud environment.

For a current 2026 purchase, Shokz OpenFit Pro is the stronger premium ear-hook choice for exercise and long battery life, Soundcore AeroFit 2 Pro is the most interesting option if you want an open mode plus a separate ANC mode, and Cleer ARC 5 is the feature-focused pick. The best design depends on whether you want a discreet clip-on cuff, a more secure exercise hook, or simply the ability to hear what is happening around you.

Our overall verdict is based on the original hands-on comparison, documented in the original open-ear earbuds test. The newer models and current category rankings below reflect the 2026 market update and published testing from Techlicious, TechRadar, SoundGuys, and WIRED—not a claim that our original test team personally retested every current model.

What are open-ear earbuds?

Open-ear earbuds place a small speaker near, rather than inside, the ear canal. The canal remains unobstructed, allowing outside sounds such as voices, bicycles, traffic, office conversations, and announcements to reach your ears naturally while you listen to music, podcasts, calls, or other media.

That makes them useful for walking, running, cycling, gym sessions, working in a shared office, and other situations where you want audio without feeling plugged up. The category’s defining benefit is awareness and comfort, not noise isolation. As WIRED’s open-ear guide notes, keeping the ear canals clear can preserve natural environmental awareness, but open earbuds do not replace sealed earbuds in every situation.

Soundcore V20i by Anker Open Ear Earbuds, Open Ear Headphones True Wireless | Adjustable Hooks, Ultra-Comfort, Snug Fit, Power Sound, Clear Calls, IP55, 36H Playtime, Bluetooth 5.4, Multipoint Connection
  • Ultra-Comfort with Open-Ear Design: Experience matchless comfort even for all-day wear with these non-intrusive, open-ear Bluetooth earbuds.
  • Enhanced Situational Awareness: V20i open-ear wireless earbuds let you stay connected to the world while enjoying pristine playback. Ideal for both urban life and outdoor ventures.
  • Four Adjustable Positions for a Secure, Comfy Fit: Easily rotate to find the sweet spot for your ears with these bluetooth earbuds, boosting stability and comfort. Listen and move freely with V20i open-ear earbuds throughout the day.
  • Powerful Sound with 16mm Drivers: Immerse in rich, resonant bass fueled by V20i's advanced 16mm drivers—featured in these wireless earbuds—with titanium-coated domes and soundcore's proprietary BassUp technology.
  • Clear Calls with 4 Mics and AI Enhancement: Equipped with four mics and an AI algorithm, V20i open-ear Bluetooth earbuds ensure crisp and clear calls wherever you are.

Open designs also create an unavoidable acoustic compromise. Without an in-ear seal, they usually deliver less sub-bass, less immersion, and less isolation than conventional in-ear earbuds. Sound can leak out, and loud surroundings can mask quieter details. Even a product marketed with noise reduction or ANC generally cannot produce the same quiet listening environment as a sealed in-ear or over-ear ANC model.

Clip-on, ear-hook, semi-open, and bone-conduction designs

“Open-ear” is an umbrella term. The following designs feel and sound different enough that you should choose the style before comparing specifications.

Clip-on open-ear earbuds

A clip-on uses a cuff- or C-shaped bridge that wraps around the outer ear. The speaker sits near the canal while the battery and controls are usually positioned behind the ear. The Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, Sony LinkBuds Clip, HUAWEI FreeClip 2, and Baseus Bowie MC2 use this general approach.

Clip-ons can feel discreet and light, and they often work well with glasses because they do not rely on a long hook resting over the top of the ear. The tradeoff is that the bridge has to suit your ear shape. A design that disappears on one person may pinch, shift, or feel loose on another.

Ear-hook open-ear earbuds

An ear-hook model uses a flexible or semi-rigid hook that loops over the ear and holds the speaker near the canal. Shokz OpenFit Pro, Soundcore AeroFit 2 Pro, Cleer ARC 5, and UGREEN FitBuds are examples.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hooks tend to be easier to stabilize during running and other movement, although they can interfere with glasses, masks, helmets, long hair, or the top of the ear. They are also more conspicuous than the smallest clip-on designs.

Semi-open earbuds

Semi-open earbuds sit at the entrance of the ear without forming the deep seal of silicone-tip in-ear buds. AirPods 4 are an adjacent example in broader open-ear comparisons, but they are not the same form factor as a true air-conduction clip-on or ear-hook model. Their fit depends heavily on the shape of your outer ear.

Bone-conduction headphones

Bone-conduction headphones are a separate category. Their transducers contact the cheekbones or jaw and transmit vibration through bone rather than projecting sound through open air toward the ear canal. They should not be treated as interchangeable with air-conduction open earbuds. If you want the sound character and product comparisons in this guide, look for open-air or air-conduction earbuds rather than bone-conduction headphones.

How we evaluated the picks

The original guide was based on months of listening and included the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, Shokz OpenFit, 1More Fit Open Earbuds S50, Oladance OWS Pro, Soundcore AeroFit, Soundpeats RunFree Open Ear Sport, Cleer ARC II Sport, JVC Nearphones HA-NP50T, and nwm MBN001. The test considered comfort, stability, sound, controls, calls, battery life, and practical daily use—not just the largest specification on the box.

The 2026 update from Techlicious’s current clip-on and ear-hook comparison narrowed roughly two dozen products to nine finalists. Its tester compared high-resolution tracks from Qobuz across vocal, jazz-pop, rock, neo-soul, and orchestral recordings, beginning with factory EQ settings before experimenting with EQ. The testing also considered multi-hour comfort, controls, battery runtime, call clarity, spatial audio, noise reduction, AI note-taking, translation, multipoint connectivity, and price.

That is useful context, but it is important to separate evidence types. Battery figures below are manufacturer ratings unless explicitly identified as a publication’s measurement. Product rankings and special-feature summaries from current comparison guides reflect those publications’ testing and reporting; they are not independent laboratory results from this article. TechRadar’s 2026 comparison says it evaluates design, fit, battery, audio, work, commuting, walking, gym use, and outdoor exercise, while SoundGuys combines laboratory measurements with real-world listening, including sound, isolation, connectivity, microphones, fit, and battery life.

1. Bose Ultra Open Earbuds: best overall

The Bose Ultra Open Earbuds are still the benchmark from our original testing. Their light cuff design weighs about 6 grams per earbud, sits beside the canal instead of inside it, and proved comfortable and stable for long listening sessions. The design was also friendly to glasses, and the physical controls were easier to operate reliably than tiny touch surfaces when moving or wearing gloves.

Sound is balanced for an open design. You do not get the sealed-in bass or immersion of Bose’s conventional in-ear products, but vocals and instruments remain clear, and the tuning avoids making the earbuds sound thin. Bose’s spatial or Immersive Audio feature can create a larger presentation, but it reduces battery life and is not automatically an improvement for every recording.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bose’s official Ultra Open Earbuds specifications list IPX4 water resistance, Bluetooth multipoint, physical controls, and up to seven hours of playback in the standard summary. Bose’s detailed conditions are more revealing: up to 7.5 hours with Immersive Audio and Auto Volume turned off, up to 4.5 hours with either feature enabled, and up to 3.5 hours with both enabled. The case can provide up to 19.5 additional hours with both features off. Bose says a full recharge takes about an hour, while a 10-minute charge can provide up to two hours of playback.

The product’s official US price is listed at $299 at the time of this update, putting it firmly in premium territory. It also has no traditional noise cancellation. That is not a defect for a product designed to keep you aware, but it makes the Bose a poor choice for an airplane, a loud subway, or any setting where you need isolation. IPX4 means resistance to water splashes and sweat—not protection for swimming or submersion.

Buy it if: you want the most polished clip-on design from the original test, wear glasses, value physical controls, and are willing to pay for comfort and refinement.

Skip it if: your priority is strong bass, quiet commuting, maximum water protection, or the lowest price.

2. Shokz OpenFit Pro: best current choice for exercise

The original Shokz OpenFit was our exercise pick because its “Dolphin Arc” hooks stayed in place, its air-conduction drivers produced strong output, and calls were clear. It offered seven hours of battery life and IP54 protection in that original comparison.

For a new premium Shokz purchase, the Shokz OpenFit Pro is the more relevant model. Shokz lists IP55 protection, up to 12 hours of playback with noise reduction disabled, and up to 50 hours with the charging case. With noise reduction enabled, the stated earbud runtime falls to six hours. The Pro also adds Bluetooth 6.1, wireless charging, multipoint connectivity, and a 10-minute charge claimed to provide up to four hours of music playback. These are manufacturer figures and will vary with volume, codec, calls, and feature settings; they are not a guarantee of real-world runtime.

The ear-hook shape is a sensible choice for running, lifting, and workouts because it gives the earbuds a second point of contact beyond the speaker housing. It still does not seal the canal, so it cannot compete with sealed sport earbuds for bass or noise blocking. The IP55 rating also does not mean waterproof-for-swimming. Sweat, dust, and water exposure should remain within the manufacturer’s stated limits.

Our original OpenFit recommendation remains useful as historical test evidence, but availability, current pricing, firmware support, and warranty should be checked before buying the older model. The Shokz OpenFit Pro is the better starting point for shoppers who want the current premium ear-hook option.

Buy it if: you run, train, or move frequently and want a secure hook, long claimed battery life, multipoint, and wireless charging.

Skip it if: you want a nearly invisible design, wear headgear that conflicts with an ear hook, or need strong isolation.

3. Soundcore AeroFit 2 Pro: best open-ear/ANC hybrid

The Soundcore AeroFit 2 Pro addresses a common buyer dilemma: open earbuds are useful outdoors, but sometimes you also want to reduce noise. Soundcore states that the earbuds provide seven hours in open-ear mode and 34 hours with the case. Its ANC mode is rated for five hours, and the product has IP55 protection, multipoint, adaptive ANC, and LDAC support on compatible Android devices.

The crucial qualification is that ANC mode is a different listening mode. Switching on ANC does not turn the open-ear speaker into a sealed in-ear earbud. It changes how the product handles sound, but the ear canal remains open. In a loud environment, it should not be expected to match a well-sealed in-ear or over-ear ANC headphone. Soundcore’s AeroFit 2 Pro specifications are the appropriate reference for supported features and battery conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the most logical pick for someone who wants one pair for awareness-oriented listening and occasional noise reduction, provided they understand that it is a compromise rather than two complete products in one. Multipoint is helpful for switching between a laptop and phone, and LDAC is relevant mainly to Android users with compatible source devices and settings.

Buy it if: you want an open mode for walking or office use and a separate ANC mode for less demanding noisy situations.

Skip it if: your main goal is airplane-grade isolation or you do not want to manage different feature modes and their battery tradeoffs.

4. Cleer ARC 5: best for features and spatial audio

The Cleer ARC 5 is the feature-heavy ear-hook alternative. The current Techlicious update reports 16.2 mm drivers, THX Spatial Audio, Dolby Atmos decoding, an AMOLED touchscreen on the charging case, UV-C sterilization, aptX Voice, up to 12 hours of earbud battery life, and up to 60 hours with the case. It also reports IPX7 protection and support for multiple high-resolution codecs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those specifications make the ARC 5 interesting for listeners who enjoy experimenting with spatial audio, codecs, and controls rather than simply wanting the least noticeable product. However, these headline features should be understood as reported test-guide and product claims, not as independent laboratory findings. Spatial processing can improve scale on some content and sound artificial or distracting on other content. Codec benefits also depend on the phone, app, source file, and Bluetooth settings.

The older Cleer ARC II Sport from the original test had detailed sound, an adjustable hinge, gesture controls, and a UV-C case feature, but the hard ear-backs limited long-term comfort for our tester. The ARC 5 is a newer, more ambitious option, but fit remains personal: a large driver and rigid structure can be excellent for one ear and tiring for another.

Buy it if: spatial audio, codecs, a touchscreen case, and long claimed battery life matter more to you than minimalism.

5. Sony LinkBuds Clip: best clip-on alternative for active use

The Sony LinkBuds Clip is a current clip-on contender for listeners who want balanced sound, calls, multipoint, and Sony’s software features. Sony identifies the model as WF-LC900 and lists open-ear listening, three listening modes, AI voice pickup, and IPX4 water resistance. Battery is rated at up to nine hours from the earbuds and 28 additional hours from the case, for up to 37 hours total.

The clip-on format is particularly appealing if an over-ear hook conflicts with glasses or your preferred headwear. As with Bose, the bridge’s pressure and stability depend on your ear shape. Sony’s support information lists firmware version 2.0.3, released May 28, 2026; firmware availability and update behavior can vary by region, so check Sony’s support information for your market before troubleshooting or comparing feature sets. Sony’s official LinkBuds Clip page has the product’s current regional specifications.

The IPX4 rating is suitable for ordinary splashes and sweat within Sony’s instructions, but not swimming. If your main concern is active use, also compare the clip’s hold during head movement rather than assuming all C-shaped designs fit alike.

6. HUAWEI FreeClip 2: lightweight clip-on contender

The HUAWEI FreeClip 2 is worth considering if you want a lightweight C-bridge clip-on with stronger published water resistance than the Bose or Sony options. SoundGuys reports 5.9-gram earbuds and an IP57 rating, and names it its best overall clip-on in its dedicated comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

IP57 is a meaningful durability advantage on paper, but it still does not automatically authorize swimming or prolonged submersion. Follow Huawei’s product instructions, especially around salt water, chlorinated water, charging while wet, and drying the charging contacts.

US shoppers should confirm retail availability, local warranty coverage, app compatibility, and after-sales support before ordering. The product may be a stronger recommendation in markets where Huawei sells it directly than in regions where it is imported through third-party sellers. SoundGuys’ clip-on comparison is a useful current reference, but regional buying conditions still need independent verification.

7. Soundcore AeroClip and Baseus Bowie MC2: mid-priced and budget clip-on options

The Soundcore AeroClip and Baseus Bowie MC2 give shoppers alternatives to premium clip-ons. Both are included among the current options in the 2026 Techlicious comparison, with the AeroClip also receiving a “best for most users” position in WIRED’s current guide and the MC2 appearing as a budget clip-on option in Techlicious’s lineup.

These are the products to investigate when Bose’s price is difficult to justify, but do not assume that a lower price means the same build quality, microphone performance, app support, comfort, or long-term firmware support. Check the current price rather than relying on an old list price, and confirm that the seller provides a local return window and warranty. In this category, a return option is especially valuable because clip tension and ear geometry cannot be predicted from photographs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happened to the other earbuds in our original test?

The older products remain useful reference points, but they should not automatically outrank newer 2026 models.

  • 1More Fit Open Earbuds S50: A strong tested alternative for sound, comfort, water resistance, and battery life. Its memory-wire hooks, IPX7 rating, 11-hour per-charge rating, 38-hour case-backed rating, five-minute charge for two hours, and 12 EQ presets were appealing. The original guide listed a $149 retail price. Verify current US stock, price, warranty, and firmware support before treating it as a value buy.
  • Soundpeats RunFree Open Ear Sport: An inexpensive exercise option with a comfortable fit, clear mids and treble, easy controls, and 14-hour playback. Its permanent neckband, lack of a protective charging case, and IPX4 rating make it a different proposition from modern true-wireless clip-ons.
  • Oladance OWS Pro: Praised for bass response and unusually long battery life, but its behind-the-ear bulk became uncomfortable during extended wear for our tester. It remains relevant mainly if bass and endurance matter more than a compact fit.
  • Cleer ARC II Sport: Detailed sound, an adjustable hinge, UV-C case, gesture controls, and an eight-hour earbud battery plus 27 hours from the case were positives. The hard ear-backs limited long-term comfort during testing.
  • Soundcore AeroFit: Comfortable for some smaller ears, feature-rich, long-lasting, and highly water-resistant on paper, with an 11-hour per-charge rating, 42 hours including the case, Bluetooth 5.3, and IPX7. Our original reservations were audio quality and fit consistency.
  • JVC Nearphones HA-NP50T and nwm MBN001: Both were part of the original comparison. They are worth considering only after checking current availability and support, since the original guide’s strongest recommendations and the 2026 market have moved toward newer clip-on and ear-hook designs.

The complete original strengths and weaknesses are documented in the original testing guide. Do not assume that a model still has the same price or retail support it had when that comparison was published.

Adjacent choices that are not identical competitors

Some broader open-ear lists include Nothing Ear (Open), AirPods 4, and Sony LinkBuds Open. They can be sensible choices, especially if you already use a particular phone ecosystem, but they should not be compared as though all use the same physical design.

AirPods 4 are semi-open rather than a clip-on or ear-hook product. They may integrate especially well with an iPhone, but their fit relies on the outer ear and can be less secure for some runners. Nothing Ear (Open) and Sony LinkBuds Open belong in a broader open or semi-open discussion; the appropriate choice depends on how much you value ecosystem features, stem-style controls, fit, and phone integration. SoundGuys currently includes them in its wider open-ear comparison, with AirPods 4 as an iPhone-oriented option and Sony LinkBuds Open as a features-focused choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose the right open-ear earbuds

Choose the physical design first

Pick a clip-on if you want a lighter, less hook-like profile or frequently wear glasses. Pick an ear hook if stability during running and exercise matters most. A semi-open earbud may be more familiar if you already know that a traditional outer-ear fit stays put for you. There is no specification that can replace trying the fit.

Match the product to the environment

Open earbuds make it easier to hear your surroundings, but that does not make them inherently safer. You still need to watch traffic, obey workplace rules, and keep volume low enough to respond to important sounds. They are useful for awareness-oriented listening, not a substitute for situational judgment.

They are particularly poor choices for:

  • Airplane cabins, where engine noise will overpower much of the music and podcasts.
  • Very loud trains, buses, and city commutes when you need isolation.
  • Construction sites, workshops, and other workplaces governed by hearing-protection requirements.
  • Listeners who want deep bass, full immersion, or reliable noise blocking.

For those situations, use properly fitting sealed in-ear or over-ear headphones, and use hearing protection where required.

Treat battery numbers as estimates

Compare battery figures only when the test conditions match. Playback with spatial audio, volume normalization, adaptive features, ANC, calls, high-resolution codecs, and multipoint can reduce runtime. Case totals are also estimates and do not mean you will receive the same number of uninterrupted listening hours. Bose’s 7.5-hour claim falling to 3.5 hours with two features enabled illustrates how much settings matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use water ratings correctly

IPX4, IP54, IP55, IP57, and IPX7 are not interchangeable, and none should be casually described as “waterproof.” The first digit, when present, concerns solid-particle protection; the second concerns water exposure under defined test conditions. IPX7 does not automatically mean safe for swimming, and a rating does not protect the charging case unless the manufacturer says it does. Dry earbuds and charging contacts before placing them in the case.

Check controls, calls, and multipoint

Physical buttons can be easier to use while moving, but touch controls may be more discreet. Call quality varies with microphone placement and wind handling, not merely the number of microphones. Multipoint is useful for a laptop-and-phone workflow, but confirm whether your preferred codec or spatial feature disables it. If you rely on translation, AI note-taking, or voice pickup, check the required app, phone operating system, language, and regional availability.

Do not overvalue high-resolution codecs

LDAC, aptX Voice, Dolby Atmos decoding, and other codec or spatial features can be useful, but they do not overcome the basic acoustic limits of an unsealed ear. Fit, tuning, volume, the recording, and the surrounding noise usually matter more. Start with default EQ, then adjust only if the sound remains too bright, thin, or bass-light for your ears.

Simple fit and sound test before keeping a pair

  1. Wear them for at least 30 minutes: Include ordinary walking, sitting, and head turns. Look for pressure, hot spots, or a bridge that gradually shifts.
  2. Test with glasses and your normal hairstyle: A clip or hook can feel fine in isolation but collide with glasses arms, hats, helmets, or hair.
  3. Walk outside at modest volume: Confirm that you can hear ordinary environmental sound without turning the earbuds up until they dominate everything.
  4. Try speech, bass, vocals, and busy arrangements: Open earbuds often sound acceptable with podcasts but reveal their bass and leakage limitations with music.
  5. Make a phone call in light wind: Check whether your voice remains intelligible and whether the other person hears excessive wind or street noise.
  6. Check the case and charging routine: Confirm that both earbuds seat correctly, the contacts charge consistently, and the case is practical to carry.
  7. Test the app and multipoint: Update firmware, inspect EQ and control options, and switch between your usual devices before the return period expires.

Bottom line by listener

Frequently Asked Questions

Are open-ear earbuds safer than regular earbuds?

Not inherently. They make environmental sounds easier to hear because they leave the ear canal open, but they do not eliminate traffic, cycling, workplace, or volume-related hazards. Keep the volume moderate and follow local safety rules.

Can open-ear earbuds block airplane or subway noise?

Usually not well. The lack of an ear seal limits bass, immersion, and isolation. A hybrid model such as Soundcore AeroFit 2 Pro has a separate ANC mode, but it still cannot generally match a properly sealed in-ear or over-ear ANC headphone.

Are open-ear earbuds the same as bone-conduction headphones?

No. Open-ear air-conduction earbuds project sound through the air from a speaker near the ear canal. Bone-conduction headphones transmit vibration through contact with the cheekbones or jaw.

Can I swim while wearing IPX7 open-ear earbuds?

Do not assume so. IP ratings describe defined test conditions, and an IPX7 rating does not automatically authorize swimming. Follow the product’s specific instructions and remember that the charging case may not share the earbuds’ rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy the original Shokz OpenFit or OpenFit Pro?

The original OpenFit was our historical exercise pick, but OpenFit Pro is the more relevant premium Shokz model for a new purchase. Compare current price, availability, warranty, and firmware support before choosing the older model as a value option.

The Bottom Line

For most buyers who want a premium clip-on, start with the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds. Choose Shokz OpenFit Pro for exercise and ear-hook stability, Soundcore AeroFit 2 Pro for a separate ANC mode, or Cleer ARC 5 for features and spatial audio. Whichever you choose, buy open-ear earbuds for comfort and environmental awareness—not for the isolation, bass, or immersion of sealed headphones.
