Online tutoring went from pandemic stopgap to permanent fixture in a few short years, and the market grew up with it. What used to mean “a college student on a webcam” now spans structured math programs with diagnostics, global marketplaces with searchable credentials, managed services that hand-pick your tutor, and live group classes at a quarter of one-on-one prices.
That variety is good news for families — and a genuine research burden. The services are not interchangeable: they differ in who teaches, how tutors are matched, whether a curriculum exists, what parents can see, and what a month realistically costs. Choose the wrong format and even an excellent service disappoints.
This guide compares the leading online tutoring services for kids in 2026 by category — with the practical detail that actually decides outcomes: how the first month looks, how to vet, and what to demand from whichever you pick.

First, Know Which Problem You’re Hiring For
Tutoring succeeds when it treats the right problem. Before reading further, place your child:

- The gap: a missed foundation (fractions, decimals, reading fluency) is sabotaging everything built on it. Needs diagnosis and individual instruction.
- The pace: the class simply moves faster than your child processes. Needs steady reinforcement — group classes or structured practice often suffice.
- The confidence: skills exist, but “I’m bad at this” has become identity. Needs a patient human and early wins.
- The ceiling: boredom, not struggle. Needs enrichment, not remediation.
Hold your answer; each service below names which of these it treats best.
1. Outschool — Best Live Group Classes
Outschool is a marketplace of live, small-group video classes taught by independent teachers — over a hundred thousand listings spanning core subjects and gloriously specific electives. For tutoring purposes, its math, reading and writing classes deliver live instruction with a handful of peers at a fraction of one-on-one rates.
How it works: filter by subject, age and schedule; read teacher profiles and parent reviews (often hundreds per teacher); book one-off sessions or multi-week series. Kids attend by video; teachers field questions live.
Choosing well on a marketplace: sort by review count before star rating — four hundred detailed reviews beat a perfect-five newcomer. Read the negative reviews specifically: “too easy for my advanced kid” and “moved too fast” are opposite complaints that tell you exactly where the class pitches. Book one session as an audition before committing to a semester series.
The first month, realistically: one weekly series (same teacher, same classmates) outperforms scattered one-offs — continuity builds the comfort that gets shy kids unmuting. Pair the Tuesday class with two short Khan practice sessions on off days and you’ve replicated the tutor-plus-homework structure at group prices.
Strengths: price-to-liveness ratio, teacher variety, and formats that meet kids where they are — a reluctant writer may thrive in “Fantasy Story Workshop” after refusing “essay help.” Limitations: group pacing can’t chase one child’s specific gaps, and quality varies teacher to teacher (the reviews mitigate). Treats: pace problems, ceilings, budgets. Not ideal for: deep gaps needing individual diagnosis.
2. Wyzant — Best Tutor Marketplace
Wyzant puts the hiring in your hands: tens of thousands of individual tutors with profiles, hourly rates, credentials and reviews. You interview, you choose, you keep the same tutor for as long as it works.

How it works: search “4th grade math” or “algebra,” filter by price band and availability, message candidates about your child’s situation, then book. Sessions run on the platform’s video classroom; you pay per hour with no packages.
Vetting like a hire (because it is one): message three candidates with the same two-paragraph brief — grade, specific struggle, goal — and compare replies. The tutor who answers your specifics with a plan sketch (“I’d start with a fractions diagnostic, then…”) has already out-interviewed the one who sends a friendly generic paragraph. In the trial session, watch the ratio: your child should be talking and trying more than the tutor performs.
The first month, realistically: same tutor, same slot, weekly — continuity is half the value. Ask for a two-line note after each session and a visible plan by session two. If the plan never materializes, change tutors in month one without guilt; the search filters are still open and good tutors expect informed parents.
Strengths: maximum control and specificity — the filters can find a dyscalculia specialist, a retired teacher, or a budget-friendly grad student. Sustained weekly sessions with the same well-matched individual remain the strongest intervention money buys. Limitations: the vetting is yours, and a bad first pick costs weeks. Treats: gaps and confidence. Not ideal for: families without bandwidth to vet.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match3. Varsity Tutors — Best Managed Matching
Varsity Tutors runs the concierge model: an intake conversation about your child, then the service matches a vetted tutor, schedules sessions on its platform, and stays accountable for the fit — rematching is routine if the first pairing doesn’t click.
How it works: packages of one-on-one hours in a purpose-built video classroom with shared whiteboards and recorded sessions. Alongside sit large free-to-cheap group classes and adaptive assessments, and the same account carries into SAT/ACT prep later.
Making the managed model work: the intake call is your leverage point — arrive with the diagnosis (“gap problem: fractions and place value, plus confidence”) rather than the symptom (“struggling in math”), and match quality jumps. Ask explicitly for the same tutor every session; use the rematch policy without hesitation if session two doesn’t click.

The first month, realistically: weekly one-on-one plus the free large-group classes as bonus reps between sessions. The recorded sessions are underused gold — a child rewatching their own tutor explain last week’s concept is Khan Academy with a familiar face.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Strengths: speed to a decent match with zero hiring work, platform polish, and continuity from elementary help through test prep. Limitations: less direct control over the pick, and managed convenience carries managed pricing. Treats: gaps and confidence for busy households. Not ideal for: tight budgets.
4. Preply — Best for Languages (and Flexible Budgets)
Preply’s global marketplace shines brightest for language learning — Spanish, French, English reinforcement — where a worldwide tutor pool means abundant native speakers and rates that vary enormously by region. Video intro clips on every profile let a child “meet” the tutor before committing.
How it works: browse by language and price, watch intros, book a trial, then subscribe to a weekly cadence on Preply’s video platform with built-in materials.
Choosing well: for kids, filter for tutors who list experience with children specifically — teaching a seven-year-old is its own skill — and treat the first two trials as auditions for chemistry, which matters more in languages than anywhere: the child talks more to a tutor they like, and talking is the entire product.
The first month, realistically: one weekly session plus Duolingo streaks between — the app supplies vocabulary reps, the human supplies conversation and correction, and the division of labor is exactly right.
Strengths: selection depth, trial-friendly pricing, and the motivational magic of a friendly native speaker. Limitations: quality spread mirrors the price spread, and time zones need arithmetic. Treats: enrichment and steady skill-building. Not ideal for: US-curriculum-specific remediation.

5. Mathnasium — Best Structured Math Program
Mathnasium is not a marketplace but a method: a math-only program built on diagnostic assessment, an individualized learning plan, and instruction in its own notation-light style — delivered online (or at physical centers) by trained instructors.
How it works: an initial assessment maps the child’s specific skill gaps; a written plan sequences them; regular sessions work the plan, with progress re-checked along the way. Membership-style pricing assumes an ongoing cadence, not drop-in hours.
The first month, realistically: the assessment session, the plan conversation (insist on seeing the written plan — it’s the product), then two sessions weekly working the sequence. Expect the early weeks to feel “too easy” to the child: rebuilding runs below the pain point on purpose, and the early wins are doing confidence work.
Strengths: the system itself. Struggling math students rarely need “help with tonight’s homework” — they need someone to find the broken foundations and rebuild in order, which is precisely what a diagnostic-first program does and casual tutoring skips. Limitations: single-subject, less flexible than marketplaces, and method-first suits rebuilding more than stretching. Treats: the gap problem, definitively. Not ideal for: enrichment seekers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Khan Academy — Best Free Supplement
Not tutoring in the human sense — and no tutoring plan should skip it. Khan Academy’s complete K-12 math sequence (plus sciences and more), free forever, is the between-sessions engine that makes paid hours count double.
How it works with tutoring: the tutor diagnoses and teaches; Khan provides unlimited aligned practice and rewatchable explanations between sessions; the parent dashboard shows whether the practice actually happened. The effective stack many families run: one paid hour weekly, three short Khan sessions between, five minutes of parent dashboard review on Sunday.

What to Demand From Any Service You Pick
- A diagnostic before a plan. If sessions start with “what’s your homework tonight?” every week, you’re renting a homework helper, not fixing anything.
- The same tutor, every session. Continuity is half the treatment. Rotating faces reset trust weekly.
- A visible plan by session two. “Three weeks on fractions, then re-assess” — if you never hear a sentence like that, there is no plan.
- The child talks more than the tutor. Watching someone solve problems teaches little; guided struggle teaches a lot. Sit in once and listen for the ratio.
- Between-session work. One hour a week is 0.6% of your child’s waking time — the other practice is where movement happens.
How to Know It’s Working (Before the Report Card)
Grades are the trailing indicator — they move last. The honest sequence: homework resistance drops within two or three weeks; the child voluntarily explains an idea aloud by week four or five; quiz scores move by weeks six to ten. If the ladder hasn’t started by week six, change something specific — the tutor, the format, or the diagnosis — rather than abandoning the idea of help.
Frequently Asked Questions
Group or one-on-one — how do we decide?
By problem, not budget alone: gaps and broken confidence need one-on-one (an adult adapting to one child in real time); pace problems and enrichment thrive in groups. The budget hybrid that works: a weekly group class for momentum plus a monthly individual check-in for gap-hunting.
How many sessions per week?
One consistent weekly session with between-session practice is the proven baseline. Serious catch-up: two shorter sessions beat one marathon. Cramming five sessions into exam week teaches cramming.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What does it cost, honestly?
Think in tiers: free (Khan), per-class group pricing (Outschool), hourly marketplace rates spanning wide bands by credentials (Wyzant/Preply), and premium managed packages (Varsity, Mathnasium memberships). Spend at the tier your diagnosis demands — confidence wobbles rarely need the top tier; deep layered gaps usually do. Price the full term, not the session.
Online versus in-person — are we losing something?
For most kids seven and up, no — shared whiteboards and short focused sessions translate well, and the research has settled comfortable. The exceptions: very young children, and kids for whom the screen itself is the distraction battlefield — they may need the accountability of a physical presence.
When do we stop?
When the original problem is gone and the child holds grade level unaided for a full term. Write the exit condition down in month one — tutoring without a finish line quietly becomes a subscription. Wind down (weekly → biweekly → on-call) rather than stopping cold, and treat returning later for a rough unit as the system working, not failing.
Bottom Line
Format first, brand second, person third. Name the problem you’re treating, choose the category built for it, then invest your care in the individual match and the weekly rhythm. Done in that order, online tutoring reliably does what it promises; done backwards — brand first, problem never named — it becomes an expensive way to supervise homework.
