Choose the plugin that matches where your information already lives. Use Tasks for Markdown checkboxes scattered through notes, add Tasks Kanban when those same tasks need a visual board, and start with Obsidian’s built-in Bases for property-driven dashboards. Choose Dataview when you need query-built tables, lists, or task views; use QuickAdd for fast capture and chained workflows; and use Templater when note creation requires calculations, conditions, JavaScript, or system commands.

These plugins work together, but they are not interchangeable. The most important decision is what a board card or dashboard row represents: an existing checkbox task, a whole note, or a record described by properties. Decide that first, then install only the tools that operate on that data model.

Choose by data model before choosing by feature list

Obsidian can hold several kinds of information at once. A task may be a Markdown checkbox inside a meeting note. A project may be a note with YAML frontmatter and inline fields. A board card may represent either of those things or simply be a standalone item on a board. Each plugin in this guide reads and writes a different layer.

  • Markdown checkbox lines: Tasks indexes them across the vault, including due dates, recurring tasks, done dates, filters, and status changes written back to the source note.
  • File properties and fields: Bases and Dataview organize notes by properties. Bases is the native option; Dataview adds a query language and JavaScript modes.
  • Capture actions and macros: QuickAdd records text, creates notes, and chains commands, scripts, or other choices.
  • Dynamic templates: Templater generates content from variables and functions and can execute JavaScript or system commands.

If your vault has ordinary checkboxes already, do not rebuild them as database records just to obtain a dashboard. If every project note already has consistent properties, a property view may be simpler than introducing a task parser. A mixed vault can use both approaches, but define which plugin owns each workflow so that two systems do not compete to update the same information.

At-a-glance comparison

Option Data model Best fit Main trade-off
Bases File properties Native, property-based views Less oriented to advanced scripted query workflows
Dataview Frontmatter and inline fields Custom tables, lists, and task queries Requires consistent metadata; JavaScript modes need care
Tasks Markdown checkbox lines Due dates, recurrence, filtering, and vault-wide task queries Tasks must use its supported Markdown format
Tasks Kanban Existing Tasks items Visual status board over current task lines Requires Tasks and changes source-task status when cards move
QuickAdd Capture choices and macros Fast entry, note creation, and chained actions Workflows require configuration; its CLI is desktop-only
Templater Templates plus code Dynamic generation and computation Arbitrary code and system commands require trusted sources

Tasks: the foundation for Markdown checklists

Tasks is the best starting point when your actionable items already appear as Markdown checkboxes in many notes. It finds and manages those lines across the vault instead of forcing you to copy them into a central task note. Its documented feature set includes due dates, recurring tasks, done dates, filtering, and source-file updates when a status changes.

What Tasks solves

A task query can give you a view such as items due today, recurring work, or unfinished tasks spread across projects and daily notes. Because the task remains in its original note, context is preserved. Completing or changing a task through Tasks updates that source file rather than creating a disconnected copy.

Install and configure it first

  1. In Obsidian, open Settings → Community plugins → Browse.
  2. Find Tasks, install it, and enable it from the Community plugins list.
  3. Review the plugin settings before building dashboards. The project recommends setting a global filter early if you want one consistent filter across task views.
  4. Review the Tasks toggle command and assign a hotkey only after confirming which status transition you want the command to perform.

Keep the underlying checklist format consistent. A task written in an unsupported form will not appear simply because it is visually similar to a checkbox. When a task is missing from a view, check its Markdown syntax and the active filter before assuming the plugin failed.

When Tasks is the right choice

  • You want one view of tasks from daily notes, project notes, and meeting notes.
  • Due dates, recurrence, completion dates, and status filtering matter.
  • You want changes made in a dashboard to be reflected in the note where the task was written.

Tasks is not a general-purpose metadata database. If your “tasks” are actually records described by fields such as owner, project, or priority, Bases or Dataview may be a better primary view, with Tasks reserved for actionable checkbox lines.

Tasks Kanban: a board over the tasks you already have

Tasks Kanban adds columns, saved boards, custom columns, grouping lanes, sorting, filtering, and drag-and-drop to the Tasks model. Its cards are real Tasks items wherever they already live. Moving a card changes the task status in the source note; it does not create a second copy of the task.

Dependency and compatibility

Install and enable Tasks before Tasks Kanban, then enable both plugins. The directory snapshot checked October 13, 2026 lists Tasks Kanban version 0.11.0, compatible with Obsidian 1.12.7 or later, for desktop and mobile. The listing says it was updated two weeks before that snapshot; that relative timing can change, so treat the version and update information as a snapshot rather than a permanent guarantee.

Use it when the card is an existing task

Tasks Kanban is a good fit for a software project, editorial queue, or personal workflow where each card should remain a checkbox in a note. Columns can represent statuses, while grouping lanes, sorting, and filters provide additional structure without relocating the source text.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use another board model when the card is a note

If each card should be a whole note, or you want a self-contained board file containing independent cards, Tasks Kanban is the wrong abstraction. Choose a note-based Kanban approach instead. The distinction prevents a common failure: expecting a task board to manage records that are not Tasks items.

Bases: try the built-in dashboard first

Bases is an Obsidian core plugin for custom views that edit, sort, and filter files using properties. Core plugins are included in Obsidian and officially built and supported by the Obsidian team, although some may be disabled by default in settings.

Why Bases is a sensible first step

There is no community-plugin installation or separate query language to maintain. If your notes already have useful properties, a Bases view can provide a dashboard while keeping editing, sorting, and filtering inside Obsidian’s native feature set. This makes it a practical starting point for project indexes, reading lists, or other property-based collections.

Where Bases may stop being enough

Bases is less oriented toward advanced scripted query workflows. When you need custom table logic, task-specific results, or JavaScript-driven views, Dataview offers a broader query surface. Start with Bases when simplicity and native support matter; move to Dataview only when a concrete requirement justifies the added configuration.

Dataview: query-driven tables, lists, and task views

Dataview treats your vault like a queryable database. It reads YAML frontmatter and inline fields, then exposes a pipeline-style query language, inline expressions, DataviewJS, and inline JavaScript for views. It can render tables, lists, and task results for projects, reading lists, or metadata-rich task systems.

The cost of flexibility is consistent metadata

Dataview cannot infer a reliable project dashboard from inconsistent notes. Decide on field names, value formats, and where those fields belong before writing queries. Annotate a small set of useful properties consistently, then build one view and verify that it returns the expected notes. Expanding the schema later is easier than debugging a dashboard built on several competing conventions.

Version and maintenance context

The directory snapshot checked October 13, 2026 lists Dataview version 0.5.68 with desktop and mobile support. The listing also says its last update was two years before the snapshot. That maintenance gap does not by itself make the plugin unusable, but it is a reason to test it against your Obsidian version and keep a fallback view in mind.

Choose ordinary queries before JavaScript

Standard Dataview queries are more constrained than JavaScript modes. DataviewJS has the same level of access as an Obsidian plugin: code may rewrite or create files, delete files, or make network requests. Use scripts you wrote yourself or code you have read and understand from a reputable source. A dashboard does not need JavaScript merely because JavaScript is available.

QuickAdd: capture information and chain routine actions

QuickAdd is an automation entry point rather than a task query engine. It provides template choices for creating notes, capture choices for appending text to notes, and macro choices that run several steps, including commands, scripts, or other choices. Workflows can run from an Obsidian command or hotkey, through URI links, and—on desktop—through its CLI.

A dependable first workflow

  1. Install QuickAdd from Settings → Community plugins → Browse, then enable it.
  2. Create a capture choice that appends a timestamped entry to your daily note.
  3. Trigger the choice manually and inspect the destination note, insertion point, and timestamp.
  4. After the write is correct, assign a hotkey or invoke it from another workflow.

Testing the destination before adding shortcuts prevents silent clutter in the wrong daily note. Once capture works, a macro can chain the capture with commands or scripts, but add one step at a time so a failed action is easy to locate.

Platform and version details

The community listing snapshot reports QuickAdd version 2.32.1, compatible with Obsidian 1.13.0 or later, and available on desktop and mobile. Its CLI is desktop-only. A mobile workflow should therefore use commands, hotkeys where available, or URI links rather than depending on the CLI.

Templater: generate dynamic notes with code

Templater inserts variables and function results into notes and can execute JavaScript or system commands. It is the right tool when a static template cannot express the required logic—for example, when a new note needs conditional sections, computed values, or content assembled from several inputs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use it for generation, not basic capture

For a single timestamped line in a daily note, QuickAdd is usually the simpler configuration. Use Templater when the note itself must be computed: a project template may create different sections based on selected metadata, or a meeting template may calculate values and insert generated content.

Security boundary

Templater warns that arbitrary JavaScript and system commands from untrusted sources can be dangerous. Treat a template as executable code, not as harmless text. Inspect commands before enabling them, avoid snippets whose behavior you cannot explain, and test on a disposable note or backup vault before allowing a template to modify important files.

The October 13, 2026 directory snapshot lists Templater version 2.26.0, compatible with Obsidian 1.13.0 or later, for desktop and mobile.

Practical combinations that avoid overlap

Daily capture plus task follow-up

Use QuickAdd to append quick thoughts or action items to a daily note. Keep actionable lines as Markdown checkboxes so Tasks can discover them later. This separates capture from task management: QuickAdd handles the write, while Tasks handles dates, recurrence, filtering, and status changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Property dashboard plus task views

Use Bases for a native index of project notes, each carrying consistent properties. Add Tasks for the checkbox items inside those notes. This gives you a property-level project dashboard and a task-level execution view without forcing one plugin to represent both layers.

Custom dashboard with controlled automation

Use Dataview for a query-driven table or list when Bases cannot express the view. If generating each note requires conditions or calculations, use Templater for creation and Dataview for reading. Keep write operations in the generation workflow and read operations in the dashboard where possible; this makes unexpected changes easier to diagnose.

Visual board for existing work

Install Tasks and Tasks Kanban when the team wants columns and drag-and-drop but the canonical records must remain checkbox lines in project notes. Moving a card then changes the source task status, preserving one source of truth.

Installation order and maintenance checklist

  1. Identify whether your records are checkboxes, file properties, whole notes, or captured text.
  2. Enable any required core plugins, including Bases if it is not already active.
  3. Install community plugins from Settings → Community plugins → Browse, then enable each one.
  4. Install dependencies before dependents: Tasks before Tasks Kanban.
  5. Configure one small workflow and verify its output in the source note.
  6. Document your field names, task conventions, and status meanings so future queries remain consistent.
  7. After an Obsidian or plugin update, test a representative dashboard, capture action, and status change before relying on the workflow.

Plugin versions, compatibility labels, update timing, and directory counters change. The figures in this guide are directory snapshots checked October 13, 2026, not promises that the same versions will remain current.

Troubleshooting by symptom

A task does not appear in a Tasks view

  • Confirm that the line uses the Markdown task format supported by Tasks.
  • Check the view’s filters and any global filter you configured.
  • Verify that the task is in the vault location being searched and that the source note is saved.

Dragging a Kanban card changes the wrong thing

  • Open the source note and inspect the task status after the move.
  • Remember that Tasks Kanban edits the existing task; it is not an independent card database.
  • If you wanted whole-note cards, switch to a note-based board model.

A Dataview table is empty or incomplete

  • Check that the notes use the exact same property names and value shapes.
  • Test the query against one known note before widening the scope.
  • Prefer ordinary query features before introducing DataviewJS.

A QuickAdd action writes to an unexpected location

  • Run the capture choice manually and inspect its configured destination.
  • Confirm the daily-note path and insertion location before assigning a hotkey or URI trigger.
  • Add macro steps one at a time so you can identify which action changes the destination.

A template behaves unpredictably

  • Read every JavaScript and system-command section before running it.
  • Test in a disposable note or backup vault.
  • Remove code you do not need; static template text is safer than executable logic.

Safety and trust boundaries

Automation increases both capability and consequence. DataviewJS can operate with plugin-level access, while Templater can execute JavaScript and system commands. A copied snippet may therefore rewrite, create, or delete files or make network requests. Keep ordinary queries and static templates as the default, use code only for a defined requirement, and treat third-party snippets as untrusted until reviewed.

Also separate read-only views from write-back tools in your mental model. Bases and Dataview primarily present information; Tasks and Tasks Kanban can update task status; QuickAdd and Templater can create or modify note content. Knowing which layer is allowed to write makes recovery and troubleshooting much simpler.

Which stack should you install?

  • Checkbox tasks across many notes: Tasks.
  • Checkbox tasks plus a visual workflow: Tasks and Tasks Kanban.
  • Native dashboard over note properties: Bases.
  • Highly customized tables, lists, or task queries: Dataview, with consistent metadata and cautious use of JavaScript.
  • Fast capture and repeatable command chains: QuickAdd.
  • Conditional or computed note generation: Templater.
  • Mixed system: combine Bases or Dataview for note-level information, Tasks for checkbox execution, and QuickAdd or Templater for controlled input and generation.

Start with the smallest plugin set that matches your data model. Add a second tool only when it solves a different problem—such as a board over Tasks or automation around a property dashboard. That approach preserves one source of truth and keeps your Obsidian vault easier to understand six months later.
