The most important Nintendo Switch 2 accessory is a microSD Express card: Switch 2 is designed exclusively for this card standard when you expand game storage, so a conventional Switch microSD card is not a valid game-storage purchase. For protection, choose between a slim handheld case with a screen protector and a larger case that also carries the dock and cables. For TV play, keep the dock, AC adapter, USB-C cable and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable that came with the console; buy a second Dock Set only for another television or as a replacement.
Nintendo’s 2025 specifications list 256GB of internal storage, microSD Express expansion up to 2TB, 4K output at 60 frames per second in TV mode, an estimated 2–6.5-hour battery range and approximately three hours for a full charge. Those figures explain why storage and protection are the practical first purchases, while extra charging and docking hardware are optional convenience upgrades.
What comes with Nintendo Switch 2
Before buying accessories, check the contents of the console package. Nintendo includes the hardware needed for handheld charging and TV play:
| Included item | What it does | Should you buy another? |
|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 Dock | Connects the console to a television and charges it while docked. | Only for a second room, a replacement or a spare setup. |
| AC adapter | Supplies power to the console or dock. | Useful as a replacement or for leaving a dedicated charger in another location. |
| USB-C charging cable | Connects the console or compatible power equipment for charging. | Optional spare; the package already includes one. |
| Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable | Carries the dock’s TV signal, including supported high-resolution output. | Optional replacement or an additional-room cable. |
A carrying case, screen protector and microSD Express card are not included. Treat those as separate purchases rather than assuming that an apparent bundle contains the console or controllers.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Storage: buy microSD Express, not a conventional microSD card
Why the card standard matters
Nintendo says Switch 2 uses the expandable-memory standard called microSD Express. Its support guidance describes the console as designed exclusively for microSD Express cards because they provide faster data transfer than conventional microSD cards. An ordinary card that worked in the original Switch is therefore not a valid recommendation for expanding Switch 2 game storage.
The console has 256GB of internal storage, while Nintendo specifies microSD Express expansion up to 2TB. Actual free space is lower than the headline internal figure because system software occupies part of it, and installed games vary considerably in size. A card is most useful when you expect a digital library, frequent downloads or large updates.
The official 256GB option
Nintendo’s catalog lists the Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB as a Switch 2 accessory. Use the full product description, “Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express card,” when checking listings so that a similarly sized conventional microSD card is not substituted. Capacity alone does not establish compatibility; the Express designation is the requirement.

How to install expandable storage
- Turn the console fully off before opening the microSD card slot. Do not insert or remove a card while the system is writing data.
- Insert a microSD Express card in the orientation shown beside the slot until it is seated. Do not force the card or use an adapter intended for a different format.
- Start Switch 2 and follow any system prompt to prepare the card for use. If the console asks to format it, confirm only after verifying that the card is new or that its contents are backed up elsewhere.
- Use the console’s storage-management controls to check available space and choose where future downloadable data is stored. Keep the card installed when launching software that resides on it.
Storage buying checklist
- Look for the words microSD Express, not merely microSD, UHS or a speed-class number.
- Confirm that the listing identifies Switch 2 compatibility; a card marketed only for the original Switch does not meet Nintendo’s stated standard.
- Choose capacity according to your digital library and budget. Nintendo’s stated ceiling is 2TB, so capacities above that are not established as supported by the cited specification.
- Keep the original packaging or purchase record until the console recognizes the card and completes a data transfer.
Charging and TV play accessories
Use the supplied power equipment first
The included AC adapter and USB-C cable cover normal charging, and the included Dock Set covers TV play. Switch 2’s estimated battery life is 2–6.5 hours, depending on software and conditions, and Nintendo estimates roughly three hours for charging. Those are Nintendo’s published estimates rather than a guarantee for every game, brightness level or network condition.
Why the original Switch dock is not a substitute
The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. The original Switch AC adapter also cannot provide Switch 2 TV mode because its power output differs. Keep the Switch 2 dock and adapter together for television use instead of trying to make an older setup work through adapters or cables.
When a second Dock Set makes sense
The Nintendo Switch 2 Dock Set contains a dock, AC adapter, USB-C charging cable and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. Nintendo describes an extra dock as a way to set up a second television in the house. It is also the appropriate replacement if the original dock is damaged or missing. A new console does not require this purchase: one Dock Set is already supplied.

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
When to buy a replacement AC adapter
The Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter is a replacement for the adapter included with the system and can connect to either the console or the dock. Buy one if the original is lost, damaged or permanently assigned to another room. It is not a performance upgrade when your supplied adapter is working normally.

- Place the Switch 2 dock near a grounded outlet and the television, leaving room for ventilation and cable bends.
- Connect the Switch 2 AC adapter to the dock’s power input and the Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable to the dock’s HDMI output.
- Connect the other HDMI end to the television, select that input, and make sure the dock’s connections are fully seated.
- Insert the console into the dock with the screen facing the dock’s front. Wait for the TV signal before changing inputs or moving the console.
- If you maintain two rooms, duplicate the complete Dock Set rather than moving a single cable back and forth; this leaves each television with its own power and video connections.
Screen protection: glass versus the official slim bundle
Belkin Tempered Glass Anti-Reflective Screen Protector
TechRadar’s 2026 Switch 2 accessories guide names the Belkin Tempered Glass Anti-Reflective Screen Protector its best screen-protector choice. The review emphasizes glare reduction, scratch resistance and an application process intended to make alignment easier. Anti-reflective treatment is particularly useful near windows or overhead lights, where reflections can hide dark game scenes.
Installation quality still depends on preparation. Clean the display, work in a low-dust area, align the protector before lowering it and press from the center outward as directed by the package. A speck trapped underneath is usually more visible than a small mark on the protector itself, so do not rush the alignment step.

Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector
Nintendo’s slim Carrying Case & Screen Protector is the compact official option for handheld travel. It protects the console and includes a screen protector, but it does not include the console or controllers. Choose it when the console normally travels by itself in a backpack, purse or commuter bag and you want minimal bulk.
Cases for handheld travel or complete TV setups
Nintendo Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case
The official All-In-One Carrying Case is sized for the console, dock, Joy-Con 2 controllers, cables and up to six game cards. It is the better match for hotel trips, family visits and other journeys where you expect to play on a television. Its additional capacity necessarily makes it larger than a handheld-only case, so it is not the efficient choice for a daily carry that never includes the dock.

TechRadar describes the Nacon Protection Case XL as a large case with room for the handheld, dock, games and cables. Check availability in your region before planning around it; stock and distribution can differ by market. Its value is the same basic trade-off as the All-In-One case: one protected container for a complete setup, at the cost of extra size.

|---|---|---|---|
| Belkin Tempered Glass Anti-Reflective Screen Protector | Reducing glare and protecting the display | Screen only | Almost no carrying bulk after installation |
| Nintendo Carrying Case & Screen Protector | Handheld-only travel | Console and screen protector; no console or controllers included in the package | Slimmest official carrying choice |
| Nintendo All-In-One Carrying Case | Travel with TV-play equipment | Console, dock, Joy-Con 2 controllers, cables and up to six game cards | More protective capacity, but larger than a handheld case |
| Nacon Protection Case XL | Large complete-kit transport | Handheld, dock, games and cables | Large format; regional availability varies |
What TechRadar’s official-case review changes
TechRadar’s review of the official slim case found it unsuitable for carrying a full TV-mode setup. That finding does not make the slim case a poor handheld protector; it clarifies its intended job. If the dock, power adapter and HDMI cable must travel with you, start with an all-in-one or XL design instead of trying to compress those items into a slim case.

Installation and care checklist
- Set up the console with its supplied dock, adapter, USB-C cable and HDMI cable before buying replacements. This establishes that TV output and charging work with the equipment designed for Switch 2.
- Add a microSD Express card before your internal storage becomes inconvenient. Confirm the Express label and let the console prepare the card before downloading a large library.
- Install a screen protector before carrying the console outdoors. Dust-free alignment matters more than speed, and a protector is easier to apply to a clean, unpacked display.
- Select a case based on the equipment you actually transport. Count the dock, Joy-Con 2 controllers, cables and game cards rather than judging capacity from exterior photographs.
- For a second room, purchase a complete Dock Set. For a single room with a failed or missing power supply, replace only the AC adapter.
- Store the dock and adapter in the case’s dedicated compartments, with cable connectors protected from bending. Avoid putting loose game cards against the console screen.
Troubleshooting common accessory problems
The console does not recognize a storage card
First check that the card is microSD Express rather than a conventional microSD model. Power the console off, remove and reseat the card, then restart and follow any preparation or formatting prompt. If the card still is not detected, test the card’s labeling and purchase documentation before assuming the console is defective; capacity or speed-class markings do not replace the Express requirement.
The television shows no Switch 2 picture
Verify that the console is seated in a Switch 2 dock, the dock has its Switch 2 AC adapter connected, the HDMI cable is connected at both ends and the television is set to the matching input. If the setup uses an original Switch dock or relies on the original adapter for TV mode, replace those components with the supplied or Switch 2 Dock Set equipment.
Recommended Free Tools
The screen protector has bubbles or dust
Small bubbles caused by trapped air may reduce as the adhesive settles, but a visible dust particle will generally remain. Lift the protector only as far as the installation instructions permit, remove contamination with the supplied cleaning materials and realign it slowly. Repeated removal can reduce adhesion, so replacing a badly contaminated protector is often cleaner than forcing a repair.
The case is too bulky for everyday carry
Move the dock, adapter and HDMI cable to an all-in-one travel case only when you need TV play away from home. For commuting or handheld-only use, the slim official case is designed for a smaller load; the larger cases are intentionally optimized for complete-kit transport.
Quick Recap
Bottom-line buying order
- Buy a microSD Express card if your game library will exceed the console’s practical internal space; do not substitute a conventional microSD card.
- Protect the display with the Belkin anti-reflective tempered-glass option or use Nintendo’s slim case-and-protector bundle for handheld travel.
- Choose the Nintendo All-In-One Carrying Case or Nacon Protection Case XL when the dock and TV cables must travel with the console.
- Use the included dock and adapter for your first television. Add a Dock Set for a second TV or replacement, and add an AC adapter only when you need a spare or replacement.
