Halo: Combat Evolved was never officially released for Nintendo 64. The N64 version people refer to as Halo 64 is an unaffiliated community port of the multiplayer game, built from decompiled Halo code and converted Xbox map data. For the smoothest starting point, use the 8 MB Expansion Pak, standard 320-wide 3D resolution, full-rate animation for one or two players, half-rate animation for four-player or bot-heavy matches, medium view-model detail, high terrain detail, and the FPS counter while tuning.
What Halo 64 actually is
Microsoft Game Studios’ July 12, 2002 announcement described Halo: Combat Evolved as a game initially developed for Xbox by Bungie Studios, with later PC and Macintosh adaptations. It did not announce an official Nintendo 64 edition. The Nintendo 64 project discussed in this guide is Halo 64, a fan-made port focused on local multiplayer.
Halo 64 uses decompiled Halo code and converts map data from the user’s own Xbox copy. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft, Bungie, or 343 Industries. The project repository does not include retail game data, so obtaining and preparing your own legally held Xbox data is part of the setup.
Recommended Free Tools
The port is designed around the N64’s local multiplayer strengths rather than online play. It supports one to four people on one console or emulator, with split-screen views, bots, and Firefight. There is no networking or system-link mode.

Hardware and software you need
Nintendo 64 memory
An 8 MB Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak is required. The standard 4 MB Jumper Pak is not sufficient for Halo 64. Install the Expansion Pak in the console’s memory-expansion bay before launching the port.
Controllers and accessories
- Use one N64 controller for each local player; four controllers are needed for four-player split screen.
- A Rumble Pak is optional. Rumble can be enabled or disabled separately for each player.
Game data
Halo 64 converts maps from the user’s own Xbox Halo: Combat Evolved data. The repository contains the project code and conversion tools, not a retail copy of the game. Follow the project’s current README for the supported extraction and conversion process rather than downloading an image from an unverified source.
Emulation
If you are using an emulator, the project README documents ares. In ares, enable the setting shown as Nintendo64/ExpansionPak. Without that emulated Expansion Pak, the port does not have the memory it requires, even if the host computer has ample RAM.

The following are practical starting recommendations derived from the project’s documented performance trade-offs. They are not claims of a writer-run benchmark. Lower detail and fewer calculations generally leave more time for each split-screen view, while higher detail preserves more of the original presentation.
| Setting | Available choices documented by the project | Starting recommendation | Change it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3D resolution | Standard (320-wide), medium, chunky; high-detail output can reach 480i on maps with enough memory | Standard (320-wide) | Try medium while performance remains stable; use chunky for the heaviest four-player or bot-filled matches |
| Animations | Full rate or half rate | Full rate for one or two players | Select half rate for four-player split screen or many bots; it also reduces bot thinking frequency |
| Particles | On or off | On | Turn them off only when you need additional speed |
| View model | High, medium, low, or off in split screen | Medium | Use low or off in split screen when the frame rate is the priority |
| Terrain detail | High, medium, or low | High | Drop to medium, then low, if a map slows down |
| Widescreen | On or off | On only with a display set to stretch the anamorphic 16:9 image | Leave it off on a normally proportioned 4:3 display |
| HUD inset | Adjustable inset | Increase it when the display crops the edges | Reduce it only when all HUD elements are comfortably visible |
| FPS counter | On or off | On while tuning | Turn it off for ordinary matches after you have settled on a profile |
How each performance setting affects a match
3D resolution
Resolution is the broadest visual-performance control. Standard mode renders at 320 pixels wide and is the safest baseline because every split-screen view has less work to do. Medium can improve sharpness if the current map and player count remain responsive. Chunky is the emergency performance choice for four simultaneous views, dense bot battles, or maps that exhaust available memory.
The project notes that high-detail rendering can reach 480i only on maps with enough memory. That is a conditional capability, not a guarantee that every map or player count will run at that output. Treat it as a visual option for light scenarios, not as the default target.

Animation rate
Full-rate animation is appropriate when one or two players leave enough processing headroom. Half rate reduces animation work and also lowers how often bots think, which makes it particularly useful when several AI opponents are active. The trade-off is visibly less frequent animation and less frequent bot decision updates.
Particles
Particles provide effects such as smoke and impact debris. Keeping them on preserves the intended visual effects. Disabling them is a targeted speed-saving step; it should be one of the later changes after resolution, animation rate, and view-model drawing have been adjusted.
View-model drawing
The view model is the player’s weapon and hands at the bottom of the screen. Medium keeps those elements visible without the maximum cost. Low reduces their detail, and turning the view model off in split screen removes a significant amount of drawing work. This is often a better compromise than sacrificing the entire scene’s resolution when several players share the display.
Terrain detail
Terrain detail controls how much environmental surface detail is drawn. High is the visual starting point. If the frame rate falls on a particular map, move to medium and then low rather than changing every option at once. Changing one setting at a time makes it clear which compromise helped.
Widescreen and HUD inset
The widescreen option produces an anamorphic 16:9 image; it does not automatically make a 4:3 television display wider. Enable it only when the television, capture device, or emulator output is configured to stretch the image. If the picture looks unnaturally narrow or wide, turn the option off or correct the display’s aspect setting.
HUD inset moves interface elements inward from the edges. Increase it when a television overscans the image and clips ammunition, shields, or other HUD information. This changes placement, not the game’s render workload.

FPS counter
Enable the FPS counter during setup. It exposes frame-rate and timing information so you can compare a setting change against the same map and player load. Once the profile is stable, disable the counter to remove the diagnostic overlay from normal play. The port’s documented update rate is 30 game ticks per second; the counter is still useful for seeing how consistently the renderer and simulation keep up.
Choose a profile for your player count
One or two local players
Begin with the table’s balanced choices: standard resolution, full-rate animation, particles on, medium view model, and high terrain detail. If a map remains comfortable, test medium resolution for a sharper image. Keep the FPS counter on while comparing the same map and game type.
Three or four local players
Four split-screen views multiply the rendering work. Start at standard resolution and half-rate animation. If the match still slows, use chunky resolution and reduce view-model drawing to low or off in split screen. Terrain can then move from high to medium or low, and particles can be disabled only if those changes are not enough.

Up to eight bots can be added, and the project provides four bot skill levels. Bot thinking consumes processing time in addition to rendering each player view. Half-rate animation is therefore useful even when fewer than four humans are present. If the match remains overloaded, reduce resolution and view-model detail before removing particles.
Firefight
Firefight combines sustained combat with AI opponents, so it can create a heavier workload than a small Slayer match. Start with the bot-oriented profile and watch the FPS counter during the busiest wave. Make one adjustment at a time so you can retain the highest visual setting that remains responsive.
Multiplayer content and what “multiplayer” means here
Maps and game types
Halo 64 includes all 13 original multiplayer maps. Its standard Halo rules include Slayer variants, Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, Oddball, Race, and Firefight. The exact match rules available in a menu can depend on the project build, so use the in-game game-type selection rather than assuming every variant has identical options.

Players and bots
One to four people can play locally in split screen. Matches can add up to eight bots, with four skill levels to choose from. More bots increase both simulation and rendering load, which is why the animation and resolution controls matter as much as they do.
No online or system-link play
Halo 64 has no networking. A setup that includes an emulator network plug-in, a second console, or an internet connection cannot turn this port into online or system-link multiplayer. Describe it accurately as local split-screen multiplayer.
Controls and per-player options

|---|---|
| Analog stick | Look and turn |
| C buttons | Move and strafe |
| Z | Fire |
| R | Throw a grenade |

Alternative layouts
If the standard arrangement feels unfamiliar, Halo 64 also provides Bumper Jumper, GoldenEye, and North schemes. Select the layout that matches how your group already plays rather than remapping every button individually.
Personal settings
- Invert look independently for players who prefer flight-simulator-style vertical aiming.
- Choose hold or toggle crouch.
- Swap the fire and grenade buttons.
- Set stick and C-button look speeds from 1 through 10.
- Toggle Rumble Pak support for each player.
Set these options per controller before starting a serious match. A player who needs inverted look or a different sensitivity should not have to change another player’s profile.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step-by-step setup
- Prepare the hardware. Install an 8 MB Expansion Pak in the Nintendo 64, connect the controllers you need, and attach optional Rumble Paks.
- Prepare your game data. Use your own Xbox Halo: Combat Evolved data and follow the Halo 64 README’s conversion instructions. Do not expect the repository to supply retail files.
- Configure an emulator, if applicable. In ares, enable
Nintendo64/ExpansionPakbefore launching the port. - Launch a low-load test. Start a local match with one or two players and the balanced settings from the recommendation table.
- Enable diagnostics. Turn on the FPS counter and play the same short section of a map while changing only one setting at a time.
- Add load gradually. Test a second human, then additional players or bots. Move to half-rate animation and lower resolution when the additional views or AI make the match less responsive.
- Correct display geometry. Enable widescreen only if the display is set to stretch anamorphic 16:9, and increase HUD inset if the television crops the edges.
- Save a practical profile. After testing, disable the FPS counter for normal play and keep the highest-detail combination that remains responsive for your usual player count.
Troubleshooting common problems
The game does not start or reports a memory problem
Verify that the console has an 8 MB Expansion Pak rather than the standard Jumper Pak. On ares, confirm that Nintendo64/ExpansionPak is enabled. This requirement is specific to the port; host-system memory does not substitute for emulated N64 expansion memory.
Four-player matches slow down
Four views and multiple controllers create the largest ordinary split-screen load. Confirm the FPS counter, switch animation to half rate, and lower 3D resolution. If more speed is needed, reduce view-model drawing in split screen, lower terrain detail, and finally disable particles.

Bot matches feel especially heavy
Reduce the animation rate first because half rate also lowers bot thinking frequency. Then reduce resolution or view-model detail. If the match includes the full eight-bot allowance, expect to make a larger visual compromise than you would for a small human-only game.
The picture is stretched or squeezed
Widescreen is an anamorphic output option, not a universal aspect-ratio correction. Turn it off on a 4:3 display, or configure the display to stretch 16:9 before enabling it.
The HUD is cut off
Increase HUD inset so interface elements move inward from the overscanned edges. This is a display-layout fix and does not require reducing resolution.

You expected online play
The project supports local split screen only. There is no networking or system-link mode, so use multiple controllers on one N64 or one emulator instance.
What to expect from the port
Halo 64’s target is a convincing local N64 multiplayer experience, not a one-to-one recreation of every modern platform feature. The project documents a 30-tick-per-second game update, 13 multiplayer maps, four local players, up to eight bots, four bot skill levels, and Firefight. Those capabilities explain why memory, resolution, animation rate, and view-model detail are exposed as explicit settings.
For most groups, the best approach is to establish a stable standard-resolution profile, then add visual detail only while the FPS counter shows that the current map and player load remain comfortable. Keep the Expansion Pak installed, use your own Xbox data, and describe the result as Halo 64’s local fan-project multiplayer rather than an official Nintendo 64 release.
