There is no universal Netflix replacement. The right service depends on what you actually watch: choose Max for HBO-associated prestige series and Warner Bros. films, Prime Video for a broad mix of included titles plus rent-or-buy access, Disney+ for family and franchise viewing, Hulu for current-season television where it operates, Apple TV+ for a compact originals-first catalog, Paramount+ for CBS, Showtime and selected sports, Peacock for NBC and Bravo programming, or Tubi for free, ad-supported streaming.
Catalogs, prices, advertising, sports rights, bundles and even plan names vary by country and change frequently. The figures below identify their market and date; use each service’s current checkout page before subscribing.
Which Netflix alternative is best for your watchlist?
Start with the shows and movies you would watch in the next month, not with a service’s total title count. A household that mainly watches prestige dramas needs a different replacement from one that wants children’s franchises, live events or free films.
| What you value most | Best starting point | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Prestige scripted television, documentaries and Warner Bros. movies | Max | Its lineup centers on HBO-associated television, Warner Bros. films, documentaries and high-profile scripted series. |
| Included movies plus the ability to rent or buy hard-to-find titles | Prime Video | It combines a subscription catalog with a separate rental and purchase storefront. |
| Family viewing and major entertainment franchises | Disney+ | Its portfolio spans Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic, with Hulu- and ESPN-related programming in some packages. |
| Current-season broadcast and general-entertainment television | Hulu | It is designed around current-season television and broad entertainment where Hulu operates. |
| A small, concentrated originals catalog | Apple TV+ | Tom’s Guide counted 336 original titles in its 2026 Australia reference: 116 movies and 220 television shows. |
| CBS, Showtime, Paramount franchises and selected sports | Paramount+ | Its documented Australian offering includes an ad-supported Essential tier and a Premium tier with ad-free viewing, Showtime, downloads and a local CBS feed. |
| NBC, Bravo and selected live events at a lower entry cost | Peacock | It focuses on NBC and Bravo programming, selected live events and Universal-owned content. |
| Legal streaming at no subscription price | Tubi | It offers free, ad-supported access rather than a paid subscription. |
How these services differ from Netflix
Netflix remains a useful baseline because it is a general-purpose service with a large mix of licensed programs and originals. The alternatives below are more specialized. Some concentrate on a studio or broadcast group, some add live or current-season television, and one is free with advertising. That specialization can make a service feel better than Netflix for a particular watchlist even when its overall catalog is smaller.
#1 Best Overall
- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Catalog-size comparisons need careful labeling. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 Australia comparison listed more than 12,000 Prime Video titles and 7,902 Netflix titles. Those are Australia-specific snapshots, not a worldwide ranking, and the numbers can change as rights expire or new programs arrive. The same source counted 336 Apple TV+ originals in Australia, divided into 116 movies and 220 television shows. A separate Rotten Wifi comparison was a U.S. snapshot reviewed August 12, 2026; its findings should not be treated as Australian data or as a permanent description of any service.
Max: the choice for prestige television and Warner Bros. films
What it does best
Max is the most direct alternative when your priority is HBO-associated prestige television, high-profile scripted series, documentaries and Warner Bros. films. Its identity is built around a recognizable premium-TV library rather than an attempt to serve every possible niche equally.
Who should choose it
- Viewers who plan their evenings around acclaimed scripted dramas, comedies or limited series.
- Households that want documentaries alongside scripted programming.
- Movie viewers who specifically seek Warner Bros. releases and related library titles.
What to verify before subscribing
Check the local catalog and plan screen for advertising, simultaneous streams, offline downloads and 4K or HDR support. Those details are market- and tier-dependent, so a feature advertised in one country may not appear in another. If only one or two series interest you, compare the cost of a one-month subscription with the length of your intended watchlist and cancel after finishing it.

Prime Video: broad discovery plus rent-or-buy access
Why it stands out
Prime Video is useful when you want one interface that mixes subscription-included titles with movies and series available to rent or buy. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 Australian comparison described more than 12,000 titles, compared with 7,902 for Netflix in the same reference. The count includes the breadth of the service in that market; it does not mean every title is included in the subscription price.
Best use cases
- Amazon Prime households that already value the wider Prime membership.
- Viewers who browse widely and are comfortable deciding between included, rental and purchase options.
- People looking for a specific older movie that may not be in a subscription catalog but is available digitally.
How to avoid unexpected charges
- Open the title page and identify whether it is marked as included, rental or purchase before pressing play.
- Check the rental period and playback deadline shown at checkout; do not assume every rental follows the same window.
- Review the selected audio, subtitle and video-quality options before confirming a purchase.
- Use the service’s account purchase controls if children or guests can access the profile.
Prime Video is therefore less straightforward as a pure Netflix substitute: its value depends on how often you use the included catalog and whether the rent-or-buy storefront solves gaps in that catalog.
Disney+: the family and franchise specialist
What is included
Disney+ brings together Disney and Pixar animation, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic. Depending on the market and package, its ecosystem can also include Hulu- and ESPN-related programming. The exact bundle, branding and availability differ by country, so do not assume that a U.S. package or a package advertised elsewhere is sold in your market.

- 4K streaming made simple:With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight.
When it beats Netflix
- Families that need a dependable selection of recognizable children’s and family titles.
- Fans following one or more long-running franchises.
- Households that can use a local bundle containing additional general entertainment or sports programming.
Questions to answer at checkout
Confirm which content libraries are part of your local Disney+ plan, whether the tier carries advertising, the number of permitted simultaneous streams, download availability and the supported picture quality. A bundle can be good value only if your household will actually watch the included Hulu- or ESPN-related programming; otherwise a simpler plan may be easier to manage.

Hulu: current-season television where it operates
Its distinct advantage
Hulu is the clearest fit for viewers who want current-season television and general entertainment in markets where Hulu operates. That makes it different from services whose strongest value is a back catalog or a studio-franchise library.
Who benefits most
- Viewers who follow broadcast or cable series while their seasons are still running.
- Households that want general entertainment beyond a single film studio or franchise.
- People who would otherwise buy individual episodes or wait for a complete season elsewhere.
Availability is geographically limited, and programming rights are market-specific. If you live outside a Hulu market, look for a local service carrying the same current-season rights rather than assuming a virtual location will provide legitimate access. Before paying, check whether the exact series and season you want are available in your country and on the plan you selected.
Apple TV+: a concentrated originals catalog
Why a smaller catalog can be an advantage
Apple TV+ is aimed at viewers who prefer a focused premium-originals service over a huge mixed library. Tom’s Guide counted 336 original titles in its 2026 Australia reference: 116 movies and 220 television shows. That is a dated, market-specific count, but it illustrates the service’s emphasis on commissioned originals rather than an enormous collection of licensed films.
Choose it when
- You would rather follow a curated slate of original series than browse thousands of unrelated titles.
- Your priority is new, exclusive television and films from one service.
- You are willing to subscribe for a particular run of shows, then reassess when the next release arrives.
Because the catalog is concentrated, make a personal watchlist before subscribing. If only one series appeals to you, a short subscription period may be more sensible than treating Apple TV+ as your household’s only streaming service. Verify local availability, plan advertising, downloads, streams and video-quality support at checkout.
Paramount+: CBS, Showtime, franchises and selected sports
Plan structure described in the Australian reference
Tom’s Guide describes an Essential ad-supported tier and a Premium tier with ad-free viewing, Showtime, downloads and a local CBS feed. The same description characterizes the Essential catalog as about 45,000 episodes and movies. These details are tied to that market reference; plan names, included channels and sports rights can differ elsewhere.
Rank #3
- Stunning 4K and Dolby Vision streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
- Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Which tier logic makes sense
- Essential: a lower-cost option when advertising is acceptable and you mainly want the core catalog.
- Premium: worth considering when ad-free playback, Showtime, downloads or the local CBS feed are important to your household.
Do not select Premium solely for the headline catalog size. First identify whether the CBS feed, downloads or Showtime titles solve a real need, and confirm that any sport you follow is included in your country during the relevant season.
Peacock: NBC, Bravo and selected live events
Peacock is built around NBC and Bravo programming, selected live events and access to Universal-owned content. It can be a practical lower-cost complement when those networks supply most of your household’s viewing, especially if you do not need a broad all-purpose movie library.
Use it for a defined programming gap
List the NBC or Bravo shows, live events and Universal titles you intend to watch, then check their current availability and the plan required. Live-event rights are temporary and may be subject to regional restrictions. Confirm whether the plan you are considering includes advertising, downloads, simultaneous streams and the picture quality your devices support.
Tubi: the free, ad-supported option
Tubi is the strongest Netflix alternative when the requirement is “no subscription fee.” It provides legal streaming supported by advertising. That makes it useful for occasional movie nights, spare-room televisions and households that would rather tolerate commercials than add another recurring bill.
Trade-offs to expect
- Advertising interrupts playback, so it is not equivalent to an ad-free subscription.
- Catalog availability can change as licensing agreements change.
- Features such as offline viewing, 4K or HDR, simultaneous streams and parental controls should be checked in your market rather than assumed.
Use Tubi as a free primary service if its current catalog matches your tastes, or as a rotation service alongside one paid subscription. You can test its value without committing to a monthly plan.
Comparison checklist: the features that change the decision
Use the following checklist when comparing two services. “Not stated” means the cited comparisons did not establish a universal value; it is not evidence that the feature is absent.

- Hides behind your TV: The all-new design plugs right into your TV with a simple setup
- Super-fast startup: Start streaming channels like Disney+, Prime Video, HBO Max, Apple TV+, Netflix, Sling, and Hulu in a snap—just turn on your TV
- Long-range Wi-Fi: Enjoy fast, smooth TV streaming in any room with a strong Wi-Fi connection, now up to 2x faster
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku Streaming Stick with the Roku remote
- Voice search & control: Quickly search, play entertainment, and control your streaming device with the voice remote

How to choose without paying for services you will not use
Step 1: write a one-month watchlist
Put every must-watch movie, series and live event in one list. Mark each item as essential, nice-to-have or available elsewhere. A service that owns one essential series can be more valuable than one with thousands of titles you will never open.
Step 2: classify your household’s viewing pattern
- Series-first: prioritize Max, Hulu, Apple TV+ or Paramount+ according to the specific shows and current-season needs.
- Movie-first: compare Max, Prime Video and Tubi, checking whether the films are included or require separate rental payments.
- Family-first: start with Disney+ and confirm the local package and parental features.
- Sports/live-first: check Paramount+, Peacock and any Disney package with ESPN-related programming, then verify event rights rather than relying on brand reputation.
- Budget-first: use Tubi as the no-subscription baseline and add one paid service only for a clearly defined gap.
Step 3: check the exact title, not just the service brand
Search each service for the specific season, episode or movie. Rights can differ by country, and a service may show a title page even when the program is available only to rent, on a higher tier or for a limited time.
Step 4: calculate the real monthly commitment
Record the advertised price, taxes, annual-versus-monthly billing, advertising tier and renewal amount. Include any separate rental or purchase spending on Prime Video. A low monthly fee can cost more if you need a second service or frequent rentals to complete your watchlist.
Step 5: check household features
Before payment, verify simultaneous streams, profiles, child settings, downloads, supported devices, 4K or HDR access and travel rules. These are practical limits that can matter more than a service’s headline catalog.
Step 6: set a cancellation reminder
Streaming catalogs are designed for rotation. Set a reminder for the day before renewal, finish the shows that justified the subscription, and reassess the next month’s watchlist. Keep a free service such as Tubi available for gaps instead of retaining every paid service continuously.

Treating a bundle as automatically cheaper
A bundle is valuable only when the household watches the included services. Compare the bundle’s total recurring price with the cost of the one service you would otherwise keep, and check whether advertising or plan restrictions change.
Confusing “available” with “included”
Prime Video’s rent-or-buy storefront is the clearest example: a title may be discoverable in the app without being part of the subscription. Confirm the payment label before playback.
Choosing an ad-free tier for a feature you do not need
Paramount+ Premium’s documented advantages include ad-free viewing, Showtime, downloads and a local CBS feed. If none matters to your household, the Essential tier may satisfy the same viewing plan at a lower tier price; verify the current local terms.

Ignoring rights changes
Sports, current-season episodes and licensed movies can leave a service. Recheck the title and event shortly before subscribing, especially for a time-sensitive watchlist.
A practical rotation plan
Many households can cover most viewing with one anchor service and one short-term add-on. Choose the anchor by your most frequent category: Max for prestige television, Disney+ for family franchises, Prime Video for broad discovery, Hulu for current-season television where available, Apple TV+ for concentrated originals, Paramount+ for CBS and Showtime-related needs, Peacock for NBC and Bravo, or Tubi when avoiding a subscription is the priority.
Add a second service only when its watchlist contains several near-term essentials. Watch those titles during one billing period, then cancel or pause before renewal if the next month has no equivalent value. Keep a written list of expiration dates and rental deadlines so that rotation does not turn into missed finales or accidental charges.
Bottom line: match the service to the next 30 days
Max is the strongest focused replacement for HBO-associated series and Warner Bros. films; Prime Video is the most flexible for included viewing plus rentals and purchases; Disney+ is the family-and-franchise choice; Hulu serves current-season television where it operates; Apple TV+ rewards viewers who want a concentrated originals catalog; Paramount+ combines CBS, Showtime, franchises and selected sports; Peacock targets NBC, Bravo and selected live events; and Tubi is the no-subscription option. Because every catalog and price is regional and changeable, the best choice is the service that covers your immediate watchlist at the current checkout price, not the one with the biggest headline number.
