Linux Mint Cinnamon is the best starting point for most Windows users who want a familiar desktop and a low-drama first installation. Choose Zorin OS instead if trying Linux from a USB drive before installing, or switching among familiar-looking desktop layouts, matters most. Choose Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop when you want its broad desktop ecosystem and your computer meets its published comfortable-use guidance.

There is no universal winner. The right distribution depends on your computer, how closely you want the desktop to resemble Windows, whether you need a live USB trial, and which applications or hardware you must keep working. The recommendations below are based on each project’s official descriptions and requirements, not an independent usability test or benchmark.

Quick comparison

Distribution Best fit What makes it suitable for a Windows user Important qualification
Linux Mint Cinnamon A conventional first Linux desktop The Mint project presents its workflow as familiar and says many users come from Windows. That is the project’s positioning, not independent comparative usability research. Check the current edition’s requirements before installing.
Zorin OS A cautious switcher who wants to test before changing the disk Zorin advertises familiar-looking layout choices and explicitly supports trying the operating system from a USB drive without installing it. System requirements depend on the selected edition. Zorin OS 18.1’s technical details are release-specific.
Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop A user who values Ubuntu’s larger desktop ecosystem Ubuntu publishes unusually clear current desktop guidance and points users with lower-spec computers toward Ubuntu flavors. The published figures apply to Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop, not every Ubuntu flavor or every Linux distribution.

How to choose your first Linux distribution

Start with the workflow you want, not with the distribution name. A distribution packages the Linux kernel, desktop environment, installers, update tools and default applications into a usable operating system. Two distributions can run much of the same software while feeling very different because their menus, settings tools and default choices differ.

Choose Mint Cinnamon for the most conventional transition

Mint Cinnamon is the straightforward default if you expect a desktop with a traditional panel, application menu, task switching and familiar file-management concepts. The Linux Mint project specifically describes its desktop workflow as familiar and says many of its users arrive from Windows. Treat that statement as project positioning rather than a measured usability result, but it directly matches what many first-time switchers are looking for.

Choose Zorin OS when trying first is more important than installing first

Zorin OS is the strongest alternative when you want to inspect the desktop on your own computer before committing. Its official product page says you can run it from a USB drive without installing it and describes layout options that can resemble familiar desktop systems. That makes it useful for checking whether the screen scaling, touchpad behavior and basic navigation feel acceptable before changing the internal drive.

Choose Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop for ecosystem breadth and published guidance

Ubuntu is a sensible choice when you want the distribution with a broad desktop ecosystem, extensive third-party documentation and a clearly stated current hardware target. Ubuntu’s 26.04 release notes recommend a 2 GHz dual-core processor, at least 6 GB of RAM and 25 GB of free storage for a comfortable Desktop experience. Those are Ubuntu’s comfortable-use recommendations for that release, not a universal Linux minimum.

Linux Mint Cinnamon: the conventional first choice

Why its desktop feels approachable

Cinnamon is organized around concepts Windows users already understand: a persistent panel, a launcher-style menu, a notification area, windows that can be minimized or maximized, and a file manager that presents folders and drives in a familiar way. You still need to learn Linux-specific ideas such as package updates, permissions and distribution repositories, but the first few minutes are less likely to be spent searching for basic controls.

Linux Mint’s FAQ describes Mint as a free operating system for desktop and laptop computers. The same FAQ includes a 1024×768 display resolution in its requirements answer. That resolution should not be read as the complete hardware specification or as a promise that every computer with that display will run well. You should check the current Cinnamon edition’s requirements and release notes before downloading an image.

Where Mint is a good fit

  • You want a traditional desktop rather than a heavily redesigned interface.
  • You are replacing Windows on an ordinary home or office computer and do not need a specialized workstation image.
  • You prefer to learn Linux gradually instead of adapting to a radically different desktop model.
  • You can verify the current edition’s hardware requirements and have a backup of your files before installation.

What Mint does not prove by itself

The project’s statement that many users come from Windows does not establish that Mint is objectively easier for every person, faster on every old computer, or more compatible with every printer, graphics adapter or wireless chipset. No comparable current official hardware table for Mint editions was established here, so do not rank Mint as the best option for an older computer solely from its reputation. Use a live session when the selected release offers one and test the hardware you actually depend on.

Zorin OS: the low-risk trial option

Try the desktop before touching the internal drive

Zorin’s official product information says you can boot the system from a USB drive and use it without installing. A live session normally runs from the USB and temporary memory, so changes made during that session are not the same as installing an operating system to the internal disk. It is a practical way to inspect the desktop, open a browser, adjust display settings and check whether the keyboard, touchpad and network behave well enough for further testing.

A live session is not a complete compatibility guarantee. Performance from a USB drive can be slower than an installed system, and some hardware may need additional drivers or settings after installation. It also does not prove that every Windows application will run. Use it as a risk-reduction step, not as a promise that installation will be trouble-free.

Familiar layouts without claiming identical behavior

Zorin describes layout choices that can resemble familiar desktop systems. That can reduce the initial visual shock of moving from Windows, but a similar arrangement is not the same as Windows compatibility. Linux applications, update mechanisms, permissions and hardware support remain Linux-specific. Select the layout that helps you find the panel, menu and window controls; do not choose it on the assumption that Windows-only software will automatically work.

Version details to verify

Zorin’s technical details page lists Zorin OS 18.1 as based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and using kernel 6.17. Those are details for that release, not permanent requirements for every Zorin version. Check the current technical details and the system-requirements page for the edition you intend to download. Edition requirements can differ, and release information can change after this article is published.

Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop: the ecosystem-oriented choice

Read the hardware guidance in context

Ubuntu’s 26.04 Desktop release notes recommend a 2 GHz dual-core processor, 6 GB of RAM and 25 GB of free storage for a comfortable experience. The word comfortable matters: these figures are guidance for a usable desktop, not a claim that the installer will refuse every computer below them or that every computer above them will feel fast. Storage also needs room for your personal files, updates and applications, so 25 GB should not be treated as the amount of space you must reserve for an entire long-term installation.

Consider a flavor on lower-spec hardware

The same Ubuntu guidance advises considering an Ubuntu flavor for lower-spec computers. A flavor changes the desktop and default package selection, so its memory use and interface can differ from Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop. Do not transfer Ubuntu Desktop’s figures to every flavor, and do not assume that an unverified flavor is automatically suitable for an old machine. Check the flavor’s own current documentation and test it from removable media when possible.

Why someone may prefer Ubuntu

  • You want documentation and community material written specifically for Ubuntu.
  • You expect to follow guides that target the Ubuntu desktop release directly.
  • Your computer meets the published 26.04 Desktop guidance and you prefer its default desktop.
  • You are comfortable with a desktop that may not look as traditionally Windows-like as Cinnamon or a selected Zorin layout.

Hardware fit: what you can and cannot conclude

Use the published numbers only for the release that published them

The only specific comfortable-use figures in this comparison are Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop’s 2 GHz dual-core processor, 6 GB RAM and 25 GB free storage. Linux Mint’s FAQ states a 1024×768 display resolution in its requirements answer, but that is not a complete specification. Zorin provides edition-specific requirements rather than one number that applies to every version. Keep the distribution, edition and release attached to each number when you compare computers.

Do not declare a winner for an old PC without current requirements

There are no comparable, current official hardware tables here for Mint editions and Ubuntu flavors aimed at older computers. That means you should not label one of them the universal best choice for an old laptop. Instead, identify the exact processor, installed memory, storage space and display resolution of the computer, compare them with the selected release’s current requirements, and run a live session if available.

Test the hardware you actually need

Before installing, test the components that would make the computer unusable if they failed:

  • Connect to your normal Wi-Fi network and confirm that the connection remains stable.
  • Play audio through the speakers and, if needed, a headset or Bluetooth device.
  • Adjust display brightness and check scaling on the built-in and any external monitor.
  • Test the keyboard, touchpad, webcam, USB ports and printer you expect to use.
  • Open the applications you would use for browsing, documents, meetings or media.

These checks are practical precautions, not results of an independent compatibility test. Wi-Fi, graphics, printers, Secure Boot, dual-boot configurations and Windows application compatibility can vary by computer and release.

Prepare safely before making an installation USB

Back up before changing partitions

Copy important documents, photos, browser data and any license or recovery information to storage that is not the computer’s internal drive. Confirm that the backup opens on another device. A Linux installer can change partitions or erase a disk, and no live USB trial substitutes for a verified backup.

Gather the correct files and equipment

Download the ISO image for the exact distribution and edition you selected, and read that project’s current installation instructions. You will need a USB flash drive for Linux installation media. The available sources do not establish a specific brand, model or minimum capacity, so select a drive that is large enough for the chosen image and whose contents you are willing to erase.

Disconnect confusion, not your backup

Keep the backup device separate and clearly identified. If the computer has several internal or external drives, note their capacities and labels before booting the installer. Removing unnecessary external storage while creating or installing can reduce the chance of selecting the wrong disk, but do not disconnect a drive that contains the only copy of your backup.

Create the USB and start a live trial

  1. Download the ISO. Use the official download page for Mint, Zorin or Ubuntu and select the release and edition that match your hardware decision.
  2. Create the installation drive. Follow the selected project’s current instructions to write the ISO to the USB flash drive. Writing the image normally erases that drive, so check its identity before confirming.
  3. Boot from USB. Restart the computer and use its temporary boot-menu key or firmware settings to select the USB drive. The key differs by computer manufacturer; consult the computer’s manual if the menu does not appear.
  4. Choose the live option when offered. Zorin explicitly documents trying the operating system from USB without installing. For Mint or Ubuntu, use a live environment when the current image provides one.
  5. Test instead of installing immediately. Check networking, display, sound, input devices and the applications that matter to you. Record anything that does not work and look for release-specific guidance before proceeding.

Zorin’s installation guide notes that the installation drive can be incorrectly identified as “Windows” in the relevant context and says this can be normal. That detail belongs to Zorin’s documented workflow; do not generalize it as a rule for every installer or use a confusing label as permission to erase a disk without checking.

Install without wiping the wrong drive

Read every storage choice

When you decide to install, slow down at the disk and partition screen. Compare the displayed drive size and model with the notes you made earlier. If the installer offers an erase option, understand exactly which physical disk it will erase. If you cannot identify the target confidently, stop and obtain help rather than guessing.

Decide whether Windows must remain

A replacement installation and a dual-boot installation have different risks. Replacing Windows can simplify the disk layout but removes the existing system unless you have a recovery path. Dual booting preserves both systems but adds partitioning, boot-menu and update considerations. The official material summarized here does not independently test dual booting, so follow the current guide for your chosen distribution and make a full backup before either approach.

Keep the first installation simple

For a first attempt, avoid changing several variables at once. Use the standard desktop edition, the default filesystem and the installer’s documented options unless you have a specific reason to do otherwise. Write down any encryption, account or partition choices you make so you can troubleshoot them later.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What to do after the first boot

  1. Install available updates. Use the distribution’s built-in update tool and restart if it requests one.
  2. Reconnect and retest hardware. Confirm Wi-Fi, audio, display controls, input devices and external equipment after the installed system starts, because live-session behavior is not a complete installation test.
  3. Set up your files. Restore only the data you need at first. Keep the original backup untouched until you have verified that the new system is stable.
  4. Install applications from trusted sources. Prefer the distribution’s repositories or the application’s official Linux instructions, and check whether a program has a Linux version before assuming a Windows installer will run.
  5. Record your recovery plan. Keep the installation USB, backup location and any Windows recovery media where you can find them.

Choosing by real-life scenario

You want the least unfamiliar desktop

Start with Linux Mint Cinnamon. Its project explicitly emphasizes a familiar workflow, and Cinnamon’s conventional panel-and-menu arrangement gives a Windows user a clear place to begin. Verify the current edition’s requirements and test the computer before installing.

You are nervous about changing the computer

Start with Zorin OS and use its documented USB trial. The ability to inspect the desktop without installing is the most directly supported low-risk feature in this shortlist. Use the live session to test your own hardware, then decide whether the selected edition’s requirements and application support meet your needs.

You want Ubuntu-specific documentation

Choose Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop if the computer meets its 2 GHz dual-core, 6 GB RAM and 25 GB free-storage comfortable-use guidance. If it does not, investigate an Ubuntu flavor through its own current documentation rather than assuming the Desktop figures apply.

You are choosing for an older computer

Do not decide from reputation alone. There is no comparable official requirement set here that proves Mint, Zorin or an Ubuntu flavor will be fastest on every old machine. Compare the exact edition requirements, boot the candidate from USB when possible, and test the devices and applications you need.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming a familiar appearance means Windows software will run

Mint’s familiar workflow and Zorin’s familiar-looking layouts describe the desktop interface, not Windows application compatibility. Before switching, list the Windows programs you cannot replace. Check whether each has a Linux release, a web version or a documented compatibility path, and keep Windows available until those requirements are satisfied.

Treating one requirement number as a universal minimum

Ubuntu’s figures are for Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop’s comfortable use. Mint’s 1024×768 statement is not a complete hardware table. Zorin’s requirements vary by edition. Always attach a requirement to its distribution, edition and release.

Installing before testing

A live USB trial can reveal an unusable network adapter, incorrect display scaling or missing audio before the disk changes. Use it whenever the chosen distribution supports it, but remember that a live session is not proof that every installed driver or application will work.

Trusting a disk label without checking the disk

Installers can display labels that are unfamiliar or misleading. Zorin’s guide specifically discusses an installation drive appearing as “Windows” in its documented context. Confirm the physical drive’s size and identity before writing an image or erasing partitions.

How current are these recommendations?

Distribution releases, kernels, desktop editions, hardware requirements and support policies change. Zorin OS 18.1’s Ubuntu 24.04 LTS base and kernel 6.17 are release-specific details. Ubuntu’s 2 GHz, 6 GB and 25 GB guidance is tied to Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop. Recheck the official Mint, Zorin and Ubuntu pages immediately before downloading, especially if you are installing months after reading this guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision

For most Windows users, install or trial Linux Mint Cinnamon first because its stated goal of a familiar desktop matches the least disruptive transition. Pick Zorin OS when a USB-first trial and selectable familiar layouts are your priorities. Pick Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop when its ecosystem is more important and your computer meets the release’s published comfortable-use guidance. In every case, back up your files, test the hardware from USB where possible, and verify the exact edition requirements before changing the internal disk.
