For most people moving from Windows, Linux Mint Cinnamon is the safest first try. It offers a conventional desktop, modest published hardware requirements, and support for the current 22.3 release through April 2029. Choose Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS instead if long-term support, Canonical’s documentation, or certified hardware matter most. Choose Zorin OS 18.1 if its interface suits you and your computer meets its compatibility limits. These recommendations are criteria-based: no distribution is guaranteed to work with every laptop or peripheral.

Quick comparison

The table separates project-published facts from editorial fit. Requirements are not controlled benchmarks, and a computer that meets a minimum can still have a troublesome Wi-Fi adapter, graphics chip, firmware setting, or peripheral.

Distribution Best fit Published requirements and support Important trade-offs
Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.3 A newcomer who wants a familiar, traditional desktop, particularly when moving from Windows Linux Mint lists 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk as minimums; it recommends 4 GB RAM and 100 GB disk for comfortable use. The 22.3 Cinnamon release is based on Ubuntu Noble and is listed as supported until April 2029. (Linux Mint FAQ and supported-version information accessed in 2026.) Proprietary ATI or Nvidia graphics drivers are not installed by default, although Mint says they are easy to install. The figures are project guidance, not a compatibility guarantee.
Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS Someone who values the Ubuntu ecosystem, extensive documentation, hardware certification, and a long maintenance window Canonical describes comfortable use as requiring a 2 GHz dual-core processor, 6 GB RAM, and 25 GB storage. The 26.04 LTS release has five years of free security and maintenance updates, with support through April 2031 according to its release information. Its comfortable-use memory figure is higher than Mint’s minimum. Canonical recommends considering an official flavor such as Xubuntu or Lubuntu on lower-spec computers.
Zorin OS 18.1 A beginner attracted to Zorin’s desktop design and edition choices Zorin lists 18.1 as based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, with updates and security patches through 1 June 2029. Core and Pro use GNOME Shell; Lite uses XFCE. The listed processor architecture is 64-bit Intel or AMD. Compatibility needs checking before installation. Zorin says Apple silicon Macs cannot currently run it natively, ARM-based Surface devices are incompatible, and some Chromebooks cannot install it.

Version and support details above are a 2026 snapshot. Check each project’s current download and release page immediately before writing an installer or replacing an operating system.

What you are choosing when you choose a Linux distribution

Linux is the underlying operating-system kernel. A distribution packages that kernel with a desktop interface, installers, software repositories, update tools, hardware drivers, security defaults, and a release schedule. Two distributions can therefore run many of the same applications while feeling very different to use and administer.

For a first installation, the most visible difference is the desktop environment. Cinnamon, GNOME Shell, and XFCE arrange menus, panels, windows, settings, and file browsing differently. The desktop also affects memory use, accessibility controls, touchpad behavior, and how familiar the system feels after years of using another operating system.

Support policy matters just as much. A distribution with a longer maintenance horizon reduces the need for a disruptive upgrade, while a project’s hardware documentation can save time when a laptop has unusual firmware or a certified business model. Treat a published “minimum” as a starting point for booting and basic tasks, not as a promise of a fast modern workstation.

Why Linux Mint Cinnamon is the default first try

A conventional layout

Mint Cinnamon is aimed at people who want a familiar desktop metaphor: an application menu, a taskbar or panel, system indicators, and ordinary resizable windows. That lowers the learning cost for browsing files, launching programs, connecting to a network, and changing common settings. The Linux Mint project describes its system as “comfortable and easy to use but also powerful and configurable.” That is the project’s own description, not an independent usability test.

Moderate published requirements

Mint’s stated requirements make it a sensible candidate for an older general-purpose computer, provided the live session confirms that the actual hardware works. The recommended figures are more useful for planning everyday browsing, office work, video calls, and several open applications than the minimum figures alone.

Graphics-driver planning

Mint does not install proprietary ATI or Nvidia drivers by default. If the installer or first boot identifies such hardware, use Mint’s driver-management utility to review the available proprietary driver and reboot only when prompted. Keep the original driver option available until you have confirmed that the display, external monitor, suspend, and video playback all work.

When Mint is not the right answer

Choose another option when you specifically need Ubuntu’s certified-device information, Canonical’s support horizon, or Zorin’s interface. Also reconsider Mint if the computer uses an architecture or graphics configuration that its live session cannot handle; meeting the published memory and disk figures does not change that.

When Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS is the better first choice

Long maintenance and broad documentation

Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS is the stronger choice for a beginner who expects to follow online Ubuntu instructions, use software that publishes Ubuntu packages, or buy hardware marketed as Ubuntu-certified. Canonical states that this LTS receives five years of free security and maintenance updates, extending through April 2031 for this release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try it before installing

Canonical’s download flow lets you boot Ubuntu from a USB drive and use a live session without changing the internal disk. This is valuable when you need to check a laptop’s wireless chipset, trackpad, webcam, speakers, display brightness, and sleep behavior before committing.

Account for the comfortable-use specification

Ubuntu’s comfortable-use specification is more demanding than Mint’s minimum specification. On a computer with limited memory or a slow processor, the desktop may feel sluggish even though the installer starts. Canonical points users of lower-spec systems toward official flavors such as Xubuntu or Lubuntu; those are separate choices and should be evaluated against their own current requirements.

Certified hardware is a buying criterion, not a guarantee

Canonical says many manufacturers certify systems for Ubuntu and that some partners sell machines with Ubuntu preinstalled. Certification can narrow hardware risk when replacing an unsuitable computer, but it does not prove that every peripheral, docking station, or optional component will behave identically.

When Zorin OS 18.1 makes sense

Desktop and edition choices

Zorin is attractive when the interface itself is the deciding factor. Its Core and Pro editions use GNOME Shell, while Lite uses XFCE. The choice changes the desktop experience, so preview it in a live session rather than assuming that a “Lite” label automatically fixes every performance or driver problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Base system and support date

Zorin OS 18.1 is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and is listed with updates and security patches through 1 June 2029. That base gives beginners access to a large body of Ubuntu-oriented guidance, while Zorin adds its own desktop and edition decisions.

Architecture restrictions to check first

Zorin lists 64-bit Intel or AMD processors. Its requirements documentation says Apple silicon Macs cannot currently run Zorin natively, ARM-based Surface devices are not compatible, and some Chromebooks cannot install it. Read the current requirements page for the exact caveats: Zorin OS system requirements.

USB capacity by edition

Zorin’s installation guide calls for a USB drive of at least 4 GB for Core and Lite, or 16 GB for Pro, Pro Lite, and Education. Writing the image erases the drive, so use an empty drive or copy its contents elsewhere first.

How to test a distribution without installing it

A live USB session is the lowest-risk way to compare a desktop and discover hardware problems. It runs more slowly than an installed system because it reads from USB, but it lets you stop without altering the internal drive.

  1. Back up important files. Copy documents, photos, browser exports, password-recovery information, and any license keys to separate storage. A live session is safer than an installation, but backup is still essential before changing boot settings.
  2. Choose the edition and download its official ISO. Match the image to your processor architecture and the desktop you actually intend to use. Confirm the version and support information on the project’s download page on the day you proceed.
  3. Prepare an empty USB drive. Use a drive with enough capacity for the selected image; Zorin’s edition-specific capacities are listed above. Creating bootable media overwrites the drive.
  4. Create the bootable USB. Use the project’s documented image-writing method on another computer. Do not drag the ISO file onto the USB as if it were an ordinary document; the image must be written as bootable media.
  5. Boot from USB. Restart the target computer and select the USB device in its firmware boot menu. The key varies by manufacturer, so use the on-screen boot-menu hint or the computer manual rather than guessing a universal key.
  6. Start the live environment. Ubuntu offers a “Try Ubuntu” path from its USB flow. Zorin’s installer includes “Try Zorin OS.” Choose the try option, not an erase-disk or install option.
  7. Exercise the hardware. Connect to both available Wi-Fi bands if possible, play audio through speakers and headphones, test the webcam and microphone, adjust brightness, connect an external monitor, suspend and resume, and plug in any printer, Bluetooth device, or docking station you need.
  8. Decide only after the checks. If a critical component fails in the live session, search the project’s current documentation for that exact model before installing. If the issue remains unresolved, test another distribution or retain the existing operating system.

Installing safely after the live test

Back up and document the current system

Copy important files off the computer and make sure you can reinstall or recover the existing operating system if needed. Record encryption-recovery keys, application installers, and any special network or printer settings. Zorin explicitly warns that installing a new operating system can overwrite data and documents both dual-boot and erase-disk paths.

Choose the disk layout deliberately

  • Erase the disk: simplest for a computer dedicated to Linux, but it removes the existing operating system and files.
  • Install alongside the existing system: preserves both systems but requires free disk space, careful partition selection, and an understanding of which boot entry starts each system.
  • Cancel and keep using the live session: the correct choice when a required device fails or the backup is incomplete.

Read every installer summary screen before confirming. A warning that the disk will be formatted is not a routine notice; it identifies an irreversible data change unless you have a verified backup.

Finish the first boot

After installation, connect to the network, apply the distribution’s available updates, reboot when requested, and retest the hardware you checked in the live session. Install additional graphics drivers only after confirming the desktop works with the default driver, and keep a recovery method available while changing drivers or boot settings.

How to choose for an older or unusual computer

Start with architecture, not labels

Check the processor architecture and firmware mode before comparing desktop themes. Zorin’s published target is 64-bit Intel or AMD, and its documentation excludes several ARM and Chromebook cases. A distribution described as lightweight cannot make an unsupported processor architecture compatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the right requirement category

Mint publishes both minimum and comfortable-use figures, while Ubuntu publishes a comfortable-use specification in the cited material. Do not place those numbers in a single ranking as if they came from the same laboratory test. For a computer near the boundary, test the exact machine and workload in a live session.

Prioritize the component that matters

  • Limited memory: avoid opening many browser tabs and large applications during the live test; compare the actual desktop editions rather than relying on a distribution’s name.
  • Older graphics: test display output, video playback, suspend, and external monitors. Proprietary-driver availability can be decisive.
  • Unusual wireless hardware: test after a cold boot and after suspend; a connection that works once is not proof of stable operation.
  • Small storage: leave room for updates, applications, user files, and recovery data instead of planning only around the installer’s minimum.

Common first-installation problems and sensible responses

The computer ignores the USB

Recreate the bootable media, try another USB port, and select the drive explicitly in the firmware boot menu. If the computer uses a restrictive boot mode, consult its manufacturer documentation before changing firmware settings. Do not erase the internal disk merely because the first boot attempt failed.

Wi-Fi or graphics does not work

Stay in the live session and note the exact adapter or graphics model. Check the distribution’s current documentation and driver utility. For Mint, proprietary ATI or Nvidia drivers may need to be installed after the base system is running. If a critical device has no workable driver, retain the current operating system or try a distribution with documented support for that hardware.

The live session is slow

USB operation is slower than an installed system, a point Zorin makes explicitly. Slow menus alone do not prove that the installed system will be unusable, but they also should not be dismissed when the computer is close to the published requirements. Test storage health, memory pressure, and the exact applications you need before committing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The installer offers an unexpected disk choice

Stop and identify the disk by capacity and model. If the proposed action says erase, format, or remove partitions, return to the backup and disk-layout decision rather than accepting the default. When the layout is unclear, cancel the installation and seek model-specific documentation.

A dual-boot entry disappears

Do not repeatedly reinstall without understanding the firmware boot entries. Start the remaining operating system from the firmware menu if it is still present, then consult the distribution’s boot-repair guidance for the exact installation mode. Keep recovery media and backups available before making another change.

A practical decision framework

  1. Pick Mint Cinnamon when you want the most conventional first desktop and your computer falls comfortably within Mint’s published guidance.
  2. Pick Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS when the support horizon, Ubuntu-specific documentation, or certified hardware is more important than the lowest stated memory requirement.
  3. Pick Zorin OS 18.1 when its desktop design is the deciding attraction and your machine passes Zorin’s architecture and device checks.
  4. Test before installing whenever the computer is old, uses unusual hardware, contains irreplaceable data, or must retain another operating system.
  5. Choose hardware instead of forcing software when the current computer fails a critical live-session test. Ubuntu-certified or Ubuntu-preloaded computers are a category worth considering when replacement is already necessary; certification still does not cover every accessory.

What the evidence can and cannot establish

The published figures identify supported release dates, stated hardware requirements, edition differences, and installation safeguards. They do not establish an objective performance winner, a market-share leader, or universal compatibility. No independent comparative benchmark is available here, so claims that one distribution is categorically fastest, safest, or easiest for everyone would go beyond the evidence.

Your best first distribution is therefore the one that matches your desktop preference, processor architecture, graphics and wireless hardware, support expectations, and willingness to troubleshoot. A live USB test turns that criteria-based choice into an informed installation decision.
