The safest starting points are the Internet Archive’s browser-based collections for arcade and selected DOS games, an installed preservation package such as Flashpoint for legacy web games, and an official commercial re-release when the title is still sold. Those options solve different problems. A game being old, delisted, or commonly called “abandonware” does not by itself prove that a particular copy is authorized for public online play.
This guide separates browser convenience from title-specific permission, explains what each route supports, and shows how to choose the least troublesome option for the game you want to play.
What “legal” means for classic games
There are two separate questions:
- Will the game run in a browser or preservation program? That depends on the emulator, browser, operating system, archived assets, and the game’s technical requirements.
- Is this particular copy and method of access authorized? That depends on copyright, licensing, the rights holder’s permission, and—in some cases—narrow statutory exemptions.
A listing on an archive, the fact that a publisher no longer sells a game, or the label “abandonware” does not answer the second question. For the strongest practical assurance, use an official rights-holder source, a clearly licensed collection, or an authorized commercial re-release. Treat every individual title as a separate rights question rather than assuming that an entire collection has one legal status.

U.S. law is especially important to distinguish from general internet practice. The Library of Congress regulation at 37 C.F.R. § 201.40(b)(19) contains limited anti-circumvention exemptions for specified video-game uses. One part concerns lawfully acquired complete games whose owners have stopped providing server authentication, allowing personal local gameplay under the stated conditions. Other provisions address preservation by eligible libraries, archives, and museums and limit the purpose and access. These rules do not create blanket permission for a third-party website to distribute every old game or for anyone to play every archived title publicly in a browser. They also do not provide a complete answer for copyright, contract, or licensing law outside the United States.

1. Internet Archive Internet Arcade: the easiest browser route for arcade games
The Internet Archive describes the Internet Arcade as “a collection of emulated arcade games from the 1970s-1990s that can be played in your browser.” It is the most direct option when you want an arcade-style title and the specific game is listed in the collection.
How to start a game
- Open the Internet Arcade collection in a current browser.
- Search or browse for the specific arcade title.
- Open the item’s play page and start the JavaScript player.
- If the game appears silent, check whether the browser tab or player is muted; the collection’s help material notes that sound may require unmuting.
- Use the controls shown by the item and allow the emulator time to load before deciding that it has failed.
The Arcade requires JavaScript and does not require a separate browser plug-in. That makes it substantially simpler than the old plug-in era, but it does not guarantee that every title will behave perfectly in every browser. Emulation speed, input handling, sound, and compatibility can vary by game and by the device running the browser.
What the Arcade does—and does not—establish
The collection’s presence tells you that an emulated item is available through that service; it is not, by itself, a rights determination for every title. If a particular game matters to you—especially a commercial release that is still supported or sold—look for a rights-holder or official distribution route as well.

2. Internet Archive MS-DOS Software Library: browser-playable DOS titles with caveats
The Internet Archive also provides an MS-DOS Software Library that runs selected programs through an EM-DOSBOX player in the browser. This is the route to try when the game you want is a DOS release and a listed item is available.
Running a DOS game
- Open the MS-DOS Software Library and locate the title or program.
- Start the item’s EM-DOSBOX player.
- Wait for the emulated environment to finish loading; DOS startup screens can take longer than a normal web page.
- Use the game’s own menus and controls. If the title fails to start, reload once and test another current browser before concluding that the item is unavailable.
Expect performance and compatibility limits
Internet Archive’s MS-DOS help documentation discusses speed, browser performance, compatibility, and game-save limitations. It also explains that some games are absent because of file size, incompatibility, or continued commercial sale. Those omissions are meaningful: the absence of a title does not imply that a copy elsewhere is free to redistribute.
The same help page states, “Currently, there is no way to save your game, although we are trying to work out if this is technologically possible.” That documentation dates from 2018, so check the live player and item instructions before relying on the limitation. If saving is important, test it immediately with a low-stakes session rather than investing hours first. Browser storage, emulator changes, or a page reload may not preserve progress even when a game appears to run normally.

When the DOS collection is a poor fit
- You need reliable long-term saves or campaign progress.
- The title depends on precise timing that the browser emulator does not reproduce consistently.
- You require a particular edition, language, expansion, or regional release that is not identified on the item page.
- The game is still commercially available and you want a clearly documented purchase license.
3. Flashpoint: preservation for old web games, not a browser-only service
Many web games and interactive works depended on technologies that modern browsers removed, as well as on original site locations and assets loaded from several places. Flashpoint addresses that preservation problem with software installed on your computer. It is not simply a website where every game runs in a tab.

How Flashpoint works
Flashpoint’s FAQ explains that archived games can depend on an original site location or multiple assets. The software therefore uses a local proxy to reproduce the web environment those games expect. That approach can preserve experiences that a straightforward browser emulator cannot load because the original scripts, domains, or plug-ins no longer exist.
The project’s FAQ reported 221,042 preserved games and animations on October 12, 2026. Its project overview, accessed October 13, 2026, described more than 200,000 preserved web experiences across more than one hundred technologies. These are preservation totals, not a promise that every item will run on every computer or that every item has the same rights status.
Installation and operating-system expectations
- Download Flashpoint from its official project source and select the package appropriate for your operating system.
- Install or extract it according to that package’s instructions.
- Launch the Flashpoint application and search its catalog for the game or experience.
- Start the item from inside Flashpoint so the local proxy and archived assets can be configured automatically.
- If an item fails, read its entry notes and confirm that the installed build supports the required technology.
The FAQ identifies Windows 8.1 and newer as the primary support target. macOS and Linux versions are available, but the FAQ cautions that they have fewer maintainers or features. Your operating system therefore affects not only installation but also the range of preserved content that is likely to work.
Why Flashpoint is different from browser emulation
| Characteristic | Browser collection | Flashpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Inside a web browser | Installed local software |
| Primary target | Emulated arcade and selected DOS programs | Legacy web games and interactive works |
| Handling of old web dependencies | Usually limited to what the web player and archived item provide | Uses a local proxy and preserved assets to recreate expected site behavior |
| Operating-system requirement | Current browser with JavaScript | Primarily Windows 8.1 or newer; macOS and Linux support has fewer maintainers or features |
| Browser-only convenience | Yes | No |
Choose Flashpoint when the game was fundamentally a web experience—particularly one built around obsolete browser technologies—not merely because the game is old.

4. An official updated release: the clearest purchase route when available
Some classic DOS games remain commercially available in updated versions. The Internet Archive’s DOS help page names GOG and Steam as examples of storefronts that sell updated vintage DOS programs. That reference does not confirm that a particular game is currently listed, available in your country, or offered in the edition you want.
How to verify a commercial release
- Search the storefront for the exact title, not just a franchise name.
- Check the edition, included expansions, language, and operating-system requirements.
- Confirm that the listing is available in your region and that the purchase grants the expected download or account access.
- Read the current product page for any compatibility notes before buying.
- Keep the receipt or account record so you can identify the licensed copy later.
A commercial re-release may be a better choice than browser emulation when you need dependable saves, support for a specific edition, or a clearly documented license. It may not satisfy someone who specifically wants zero installation or immediate play in a tab, so decide whether legal clarity or browser convenience is the primary requirement.
Which route should you choose?
| Route | Best for | Setup | Main limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internet Archive Internet Arcade | Listed arcade games from the 1970s–1990s | Open the item and run the JavaScript player | Compatibility, speed, sound, and controls vary; listing alone is not a rights determination |
| Internet Archive MS-DOS Software Library | Selected classic DOS programs available in the collection | Run the EM-DOSBOX player in the browser | Documented performance and compatibility issues; saving was stated as unavailable in documentation that dates to 2018; some games are absent |
| Flashpoint Archive | Old web games and interactive works tied to legacy technologies | Install and run Flashpoint locally | Not browser-only; primary support is Windows 8.1 and newer, with fewer maintainers or features on macOS and Linux |
| Commercial updated release | A desired title that is still sold in a compatible updated form | Purchase and download through the current storefront | Availability, edition, price, region, and license terms must be checked for the exact title |
Use these decision questions in order:
- What kind of game is it? Arcade cabinet, DOS program, or old web game points to different tools.
- Must it run in a browser? If yes, start with the Internet Archive collections. Flashpoint requires installation.
- Do you need saves and stable long-term access? Test the browser player first; if saving or compatibility is inadequate, consider an official updated release.
- Is the title still sold? If so, an authorized re-release generally gives you a clearer purchase and support path than an unverified archive copy.
- What is the rights basis for this specific copy? Do not infer permission from age, delisting, preservation language, or the word “abandonware.”
Legal checks before you play
For a browser collection
- Identify the exact title and version shown on the item page.
- Read the collection or item description for licensing, attribution, or rights information.
- Do not download or redistribute files merely because the player exposes them.
- If the title is commercially active, prefer the rights holder’s current distribution route when practical.
For preservation software
- Use the project’s official download and documentation.
- Understand that preservation of a web experience does not automatically grant every user a copyright license.
- Keep the software and operating system updated through the project’s normal channels.
- Do not assume that an item preserved for archival purposes is authorized for public republication or commercial use.
For U.S. preservation exemptions
The cited regulation is an anti-circumvention rule with defined conditions, not a general “old games are free” rule. The language concerning lawfully acquired complete games, discontinued server authentication, local gameplay, and eligible cultural institutions must be applied to the facts of the particular situation. It does not settle the law in other countries, override a license contract, or automatically legalize a public browser service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshooting common failures
The game never starts
- Confirm JavaScript is enabled for the Internet Archive player.
- Reload the item once and try another current browser.
- Close resource-heavy tabs and allow the emulator time to initialize.
- Check whether the item is a different version from the one you expected.
The game is running but has no sound
Check the browser tab, system volume, and any mute control in the player. The Internet Arcade documentation specifically notes that sound may require unmuting.

The DOS game is too slow or incompatible
Browser emulation performance varies. Try a less demanding browser session, reload the item, and read the item’s notes. If the title remains unreliable and an official updated release exists, that release may be the more practical route.
Progress disappeared
Do not assume that a browser session provides durable saves. The MS-DOS help page stated that saving was not available when it was published, in 2018, although the live player may have changed. Test saving at the start of a session and verify the result after a reload before committing to a long playthrough.
A Flashpoint item fails on my computer
Confirm that you are using the correct package for your operating system and that the item’s required technology is supported in your build. Windows 8.1 and newer are the primary support target; macOS and Linux builds may have fewer features or maintainers. Because Flashpoint relies on a local proxy and archived assets, blocking local services or network permissions can also prevent an otherwise compatible item from launching.
Quick Recap
A practical, low-risk way to find and play one title
- Classify the game. Decide whether it is an arcade title, a DOS program, or a legacy web game.
- Check an authorized route first. Look for an official current release or a clearly licensed source.
- Try the matching preservation route. Use Internet Arcade for listed arcade games, the MS-DOS Software Library for listed DOS programs, and Flashpoint for old web experiences.
- Test the features you actually need. Check sound, controls, speed, and saving before spending significant time.
- Stop when the rights basis is unclear. Do not treat technical availability as permission to download, share, or republish the game.
- Document your choice. Keep the item title, edition, storefront receipt, or project version that identifies what you used.
