For the KEF XIO, start with Movie for films and cinematic television, Music for most music, and Dialogue when speech is difficult to understand. Choose Direct when you want unvirtualised two-channel playback, and Night when you need quieter, less startling dynamics. After selecting a profile, set the correct room-size option, then tune bass and any connected subwoofer gradually by ear.
There is no single numeric EQ preset that is best for every room. The XIO’s profile choice handles the character of the programme, while room size, listening position, subwoofer placement and level determine whether the result sounds balanced or boomy.
Quick settings guide
These are the most useful starting points for the XIO’s documented sound profiles. They are starting points rather than laboratory-validated performance rankings; KEF’s published material describes the intended behaviour of each mode but does not report independent measurements of how much intelligibility or bass improvement each one produces.

How the XIO profiles differ
The profile is the quickest control on the soundbar because it changes processing for the type of content you selected. Treat it as a programme mode, not as a replacement for room calibration. A mode that sounds impressive for an action film may make a vocal recording less natural, and a speech-enhancement mode can make a music mix feel unnaturally forward.

Movie: the film and television starting point
KEF describes Movie as enhancing the cinematic experience, including dialogue, soundstage and impactful effects. It is therefore the sensible first choice for a film, drama or spectacle-heavy television programme. Listen for a wider sense of space and clearer placement of effects without assuming that the most dramatic presentation is automatically the most accurate.
Some mixes already contain strong surround information, and some listeners prefer a less processed sound. If Movie makes ambience appear detached from the screen, voices sound coloured, or effects dominate the programme, compare it directly with Default. Default is the useful control case when you want the XIO’s normal processing rather than the extra cinematic emphasis.
Music: balanced and natural
Music is designed for balanced, natural audio with minimal effects. It is the best first choice for albums, radio, concerts and playlists when you want the recording’s tonal balance to remain recognisable. Use the same volume and a familiar track when comparing Music with another profile; otherwise a louder mode can seem better simply because it is louder.

Direct: two-channel without virtualisation
Direct is for listeners who want unvirtualised two-channel playback. It avoids the XIO’s virtual surround presentation and is useful for a carefully produced stereo recording, a near-field listening position or any situation where spatial processing sounds artificial. Direct is not a quality ranking: it is a different presentation. If a stereo track feels too narrow, Music may give you a more enveloping result.

Dialogue: the first response to unclear speech
KEF’s manual defines Dialogue as a mode that enhances speech clarity by emphasising vocal frequencies and reducing background noise. It is intended for television shows, documentaries and news programmes where understanding spoken words matters most.
Use Dialogue before raising the overall volume dramatically. If the voice becomes nasal, overly loud or disconnected from the rest of the mix, return to Movie or Default and inspect the bass settings. Excessive low-frequency energy can mask consonants, so a modest bass reduction may solve the problem without making the entire programme thin.
Night: controlled dynamics after dark
Night compresses dynamic range: quiet sounds remain more audible while loud sounds are reduced. This is useful when other people are sleeping or when room acoustics make explosions and advertisements startling. Compression changes the intended contrast of a film, so switch back to Movie, Music or Direct when you can listen at a normal level.

Best XIO settings for movies
- Select Movie. Start playback from a scene containing both speech and effects rather than judging the mode from a silent menu.
- Compare with Default. Leave the volume unchanged and switch modes during the same scene. Keep Movie if its added soundstage and impact remain coherent; choose Default if processing draws attention to itself.
- Set the room-size option. In the XIO’s bass controls, choose the room size that most closely matches the listening room. The room-size selection changes the speaker roll-off point: a larger-room choice uses a lower roll-off point.
- Balance bass before increasing it. If a subwoofer is connected, use the bar/subwoofer balance and subwoofer gain controls in small increments. Bass should support effects without sounding like a separate source.
- Check dialogue at your normal seat. A setting that sounds spacious from one position can become boomy or indistinct elsewhere. Make the final decision from the main viewing position.
Movie mode cannot correct a poor connection, a badly placed subwoofer or a room with severe bass resonances. Solve those physical issues before assuming that another profile will provide a permanent fix.

Best XIO settings for music
- Begin with Music. Its minimal-effects approach is the most neutral starting point for mixed music libraries.
- Try Direct for stereo purists. Use the same two-channel track and switch between Music and Direct. Keep Direct when you prefer a focused, unvirtualised image; keep Music when a broader presentation is more enjoyable.
- Use a recording you know. Acoustic instruments, vocals and familiar bass lines reveal changes in tonal balance more reliably than an unfamiliar track.
- Set bass for the room, not the genre. A bass-heavy song can make a correct setting seem excessive. Check several recordings before changing Sub Gain or the room-size selection.
Neither Music nor Direct is a universal “audiophile” choice. The appropriate mode depends on whether you value the XIO’s virtual soundstage or want the signal to remain recognisably two-channel.
How to make dialogue clearer
Use the profile first
Select Dialogue for speech-heavy material. It is specifically designed to emphasise vocal frequencies and reduce background noise, so it should be your first experiment when words are being lost under music, ambience or effects.
Reduce masking bass
If Dialogue makes voices too prominent, do not keep increasing the profile or the master volume. Return to Movie or Default and reduce excessive bass instead. Low-frequency energy from the bar or subwoofer can mask the consonants that make speech intelligible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck the source and listening conditions
- Test a programme with a clean studio mix and a programme recorded in a noisy location; the latter may remain difficult even with Dialogue enabled.
- Listen from the main seat, because reflections and room modes can change the balance between voice and effects.
- If a late-night session is also required, use Night for its dynamic control, but remember that Night and Dialogue solve different problems: one compresses level differences and the other changes speech emphasis.
Room-size and bass controls explained
The XIO manual describes several expert controls. They interact, so make one change at a time and return to the previous value if the result becomes less natural.

| Control | What it changes | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Bass Extension | Adjusts speaker roll-off through a room-size selection. Larger-room settings use a lower roll-off point. | Choose the room-size option that matches the actual room before fine-tuning level. |
| Soundbar/Subwoofer Balance | Shifts bass responsibility between the soundbar and the subwoofer. | Use it when the combined system sounds too heavy from the subwoofer or too light at the low end. |
| High-Pass Frequency | Routes frequencies above the selected point to the soundbar. | Use it to define which upper-bass and midrange content remains with the bar when a subwoofer is handling lower frequencies. |
| Sub Out Low-Pass Frequency | Routes frequencies below the selected point to the subwoofer. | Adjust only after the room-size choice and basic balance are sensible; an overly high hand-off can make bass localisable. |
| Sub Gain | Changes subwoofer output level. | Raise it gradually until bass fills in the programme, then stop before it sounds like a separate speaker. |
| Sub Polarity | Changes the subwoofer’s phase relationship with the bar. | Try the alternate polarity when bass cancels at the listening position or becomes unexpectedly weak around the crossover region. |
A reliable tuning sequence
Changing several controls at once makes it impossible to know which adjustment helped. Use this order instead:
- Choose the content profile. Movie, Music, Dialogue, Direct or Night should match what you are watching or hearing.
- Match room size. Select the Bass Extension room-size option that reflects the physical listening room.
- Set the subwoofer’s position. Start at the front of the room or slightly to one side, then test another position. Every room responds differently, so placement is part of tuning rather than an afterthought.
- Start Sub Gain low. KEF’s setup guidance is to begin with low gain and raise it until you just notice the bass filling in the sound; stop at that point.
- Adjust balance and crossover controls. If the sub is obvious, shift responsibility toward the soundbar or lower the sub level. If bass disappears around the hand-off, review High-Pass Frequency, Sub Out Low-Pass Frequency and Sub Polarity one at a time.
- Recheck at several volumes. A setting that is balanced quietly may become dominant when played loudly. Keep the setting that remains integrated at your normal level.
Connecting the XIO to a television
Use HDMI eARC when available
KEF recommends HDMI eARC as the preferred connection for the XIO when the television supports it. Connect the soundbar to the television’s port labelled eARC or ARC, then enable the television’s eARC and HDMI-CEC controls. Manufacturers use different names and menu locations for CEC and eARC, so consult the television’s audio or external-device settings if the soundbar does not switch on or receive audio.
Use optical when eARC is unavailable
Optical is the fallback for televisions without eARC. Select optical as the television’s audio output and verify that the XIO is listening to the corresponding input. Optical can carry television sound without an HDMI eARC connection, but the exact format options depend on the television and source.
Confirm the result
- Play a programme and verify that the XIO, rather than the television’s speakers, is producing sound.
- Raise and lower the volume with the television remote to confirm that CEC control is working over HDMI.
- If there is no audio, reselect the output after changing cables and check that the television is not muted or set to an incompatible digital-audio mode.
Adding and positioning a KEF subwoofer
A compatible KEF subwoofer can extend the system’s low-frequency output, but more bass is not automatically better bass. KEF recommends trying a front position or a position slightly to the side because room boundaries create different peaks and cancellations. Move the subwoofer and listen from the main seat rather than choosing a position based only on appearance.

The KW2 RX Receiver enables wireless pairing of a KEF subwoofer. The KEF Connect app can identify the subwoofer model to make integration easier. Wireless pairing removes a signal cable between the bar and subwoofer, but it does not remove the need to set gain, polarity and placement.
Choosing the right integration goal
| Your priority | Integration approach | What to listen for |
|---|---|---|
| Cinematic impact | Movie profile, carefully increased Sub Gain and a position that supports effects without booming. | Explosions have weight while dialogue and music remain anchored to the soundbar. |
| Tighter musical bass | Music or Direct, conservative Sub Gain and the position with the smoothest response. | Bass lines start and stop with the recording rather than lingering in the room. |
| Small or bass-sensitive room | Lower sub level, correct room-size selection and Night when late viewing requires reduced peaks. | Quiet details remain audible without room-shaking bursts. |
Troubleshooting common problems
Voices are still hard to hear
- Select Dialogue and compare it with Movie at the same volume.
- Reduce Sub Gain or adjust Soundbar/Subwoofer Balance if low end is masking speech.
- Check that the television is outputting the intended audio path over HDMI eARC or optical.
- Listen from the main seat; moving closer to a wall or corner can exaggerate bass and reduce perceived clarity.
The sound is too processed
Compare Movie with Default, or compare Music with Direct. The alternatives reduce or remove some virtualisation, so choose the mode whose spatial effect remains believable on the programme you are hearing.
Bass is boomy or detached
- Lower Sub Gain before changing several crossover values.
- Try a front or slightly side position for the subwoofer.
- Review the room-size selection and Soundbar/Subwoofer Balance.
- Try the alternate Sub Polarity if bass is weak in some seats but excessive in others.
Night viewing is still startling
Enable Night and reduce the master volume to a comfortable level. Night compresses dynamic range; it does not eliminate every sudden change created by the source, the room or a television’s own volume processing.
The soundbar does not respond to the TV remote
With HDMI, verify that HDMI-CEC is enabled on the television and that the cable is connected to the eARC/ARC-labelled port. Because brands use different names for CEC, look for settings such as device control, HDMI control or a manufacturer-specific equivalent. With optical, volume control may require the television’s optical-output or remote-control configuration rather than an HDMI-CEC setting.
What “best” means for the XIO
The best setting is the one that keeps the intended part of the programme audible without drawing attention to the soundbar’s processing or subwoofer. Movie is the practical film default, Music is the balanced music default, Direct preserves two-channel playback, Dialogue addresses speech intelligibility, and Night manages late-night dynamics. The room-size choice, placement and low-frequency controls then determine whether those profiles sound integrated in your room.
Make changes in the order the system depends on them: connection, profile, room size, placement, gain, then crossover and polarity. This prevents a connection fault or room resonance from being mistaken for a profile problem and gives you a repeatable way to return to a setting that works.
