Best overall setup: leave Hulu’s adaptive quality enabled, give the stream at least 3 Mbps (8 Mbps for live TV and 16 Mbps for 4K), and use a supported device and HDCP 2.2 connection for 4K HDR. On Hulu.com, start playback and open the gear-shaped Settings menu to reach Quality, Subtitles, and Autoplay. Downloads use separate quality and playback rules.
This guide explains what each control does, how to configure it on the web and on supported mobile devices, and what to check when 4K, HDR, captions, or autoplay do not behave as expected.
What the best Hulu settings are
Hulu does not use one permanent resolution setting that works for every title and device. Its streaming quality adjusts automatically to available bandwidth, while the title, device, app or browser configuration, and display determine the highest quality that can be delivered.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- For the clearest online video: use a stable connection with at least 3 Mbps for the streaming library, 8 Mbps for live streams, or 16 Mbps for 4K content. Keep competing streams, game downloads, and large uploads off the same connection when possible.
- For 4K: choose a title marked 4K, use a supported current device, and connect it through an HDCP 2.2-capable path to the display.
- For HDR: the title and device must support the same HDR capability. Hulu lists HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision on selected devices and programs.
- For captions: open the in-player gear menu and choose Subtitles. Language and visual-format choices depend on the title, device, and app version.
- For autoplay: open Settings while a program is playing and switch Autoplay on or off. Autoplay is disabled for downloaded playback.
Hulu.com streams at up to 720p. Hulu says 720p playback also depends on device configuration and HDCP compliance, so a fast connection alone cannot guarantee that resolution.

How Hulu chooses streaming quality
Hulu describes its quality system as adaptive: “Quality will automatically adjust based on your available bandwidth, ensuring you always have the best picture quality possible for streaming.” The player continually balances picture quality against the connection available at that moment.
Hulu’s published minimum library bitrates are:
| Format | Hulu-published minimum bitrate | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| SD | 1.5 Mbps | Minimum bandwidth listed for standard-definition library playback. |
| 720p HD | 3 Mbps | Minimum bandwidth listed for 720p library playback. |
| 1080p HD | 6 Mbps | Minimum bandwidth listed for 1080p library playback. |
| 4K Ultra HD | 16 Mbps | Minimum bandwidth listed for 4K library playback. |
These figures describe the stream’s minimum bandwidth requirement, not a promise that every title will be offered at that resolution. Hulu also recommends 3.0 Mbps for its streaming library, 8.0 Mbps for live streams, and 16.0 Mbps for 4K content. Leave headroom above those figures if other people are streaming, gaming, backing up photos, or downloading files on the same connection.
Set picture quality on Hulu.com
The web player exposes a Quality control, but Hulu’s service remains adaptive. The control is best treated as a way to inspect or select the quality options available to that browser, title, and connection rather than as a universal override of Hulu’s delivery rules.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Go to Hulu.com and start the movie, episode, or live program.
- Move the pointer over the player controls and select the gear-shaped Settings icon.
- Open Quality and choose an available option if the player presents one. If the control is unavailable or offers fewer choices than expected, the title, device configuration, browser, or current connection is limiting the stream.
- Close the menu and let playback run for a minute. Adaptive streaming may change quality as bandwidth rises or falls.
Hulu.com supports up to 720p, subject to device configuration and HDCP compliance. If your television, monitor, browser, or HDMI path does not satisfy those requirements, the player may stay below HD even when your internet service is fast enough.
Improve consistency before changing settings
- Pause other high-bandwidth streams and downloads on the network.
- Stop cloud backups, game updates, and video calls temporarily while testing.
- Use a strong wired or wireless connection between the playback device and router.
- Restart the app or browser after changing display, HDMI, or HDCP equipment.
- Test the same title again after network traffic falls; adaptive quality can recover without a permanent setting change.
Get 4K and HDR when Hulu offers them
4K and HDR are conditional features, not settings that can be forced for every program. Hulu says only selected programming is available in these formats, and the device list is specific to each supported platform.

4K checklist
- Confirm the title: look for a 4K badge or other 4K indicator on the program’s detail page. A title without that designation will not become 4K through the player menu.
- Use an eligible device: Hulu lists Apple TV (5th generation or later), Chromecast Ultra, Fire TV and Fire TV Stick models, compatible LG and Samsung televisions, Roku devices, Vizio SmartCast televisions, and Xbox One S/X models among its 4K-capable hardware. The exact supported model and software combination is device-specific.
- Meet the bandwidth target: Hulu lists 16 Mbps as the minimum bitrate for 4K and recommends 16.0 Mbps for 4K content. A connection that fluctuates around that level may still drop to a lower format.
- Check the display path: verify that the television or monitor, receiver or soundbar in the chain, and HDMI connection support the required copy-protection standard.
HDR checklist
- Choose a program carrying an HDR designation. HDR is available only on selected titles.
- Use a device and display that support the HDR format offered for that title. Hulu lists HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision on selected devices and programs; support is not universal across the catalog.
- Connect the playback device to an HDCP 2.2-capable display path. An older receiver, splitter, or display can prevent HDR from appearing even when the television panel itself supports it.
- Enable the display’s appropriate HDR or enhanced-HDMI mode if the manufacturer requires that setting, then restart playback.
If a 4K or HDR badge is missing, the most likely explanation is that the title, device, region, app version, or connection does not meet Hulu’s eligibility rules. Hulu’s device list and title availability can change, so check the current support information for the exact hardware rather than assuming every model in a product family qualifies.
Choose subtitle, caption, and audio-description settings
On Hulu.com, subtitles and captions are controlled from the same in-player gear menu used for quality.
- Start the program.
- Select the gear-shaped Settings icon.
- Choose Subtitles.
- Select the available language and adjust the visual formatting options Hulu presents, such as text appearance or background treatment.
- Return to playback and confirm that the caption track is visible and synchronized.
Hulu says viewers can manage preferred language and visual formatting for closed captions. The choices shown can differ by title, device, and app version; a language or style that appears on one program may not be offered on another.
Audio description on supported browsers
For supported web browsers, Hulu places audio-description controls under Settings > Subtitles & Audio. Select the audio-description track when the title provides one. This is separate from the visual caption style menu, so a caption change will not automatically turn narration on or off.
When captions are missing or wrong
- No caption option: reopen the gear menu after playback starts. Some controls are hidden before a stream is running, and not every title supplies every language.
- Wrong language: check the language list for the current title rather than relying only on a saved preference.
- Out of sync: stop and restart playback, then test the same title again. If the problem affects only one program, it may be title-specific; if it affects many programs, check the app or browser version and Hulu’s device-specific caption troubleshooting guidance.
- Unreadable styling: return to Subtitles and choose a different visual format. Display settings on the television or browser can also affect contrast and legibility.
Hulu directs viewers to separate caption-troubleshooting paths for missing, out-of-sync, or incorrect captions rather than one universal fix. Use the path matching your device when the in-player controls do not resolve the problem.

Control autoplay
Hulu defines Autoplay as automatically queuing and playing the next available episode or related show as the current program ends. It is an online-playback behavior, not a picture-quality setting.
Recommended Free Tools
Turn autoplay on or off on Hulu.com
- Start an episode or show.
- Open the gear-shaped Settings menu in the player.
- Find Autoplay.
- Enable it to continue automatically, or disable it to stop when the current program ends.
If the toggle is not visible, make sure the stream is actively playing and that you are using the current player interface. Availability and labeling can vary by device.
Downloaded playback is different
Hulu states that “Autoplay is disabled when streaming downloads.” A downloaded episode therefore will not automatically advance in the same way as an online episode, even if Autoplay is enabled for web streaming.
Set download quality on supported mobile devices
Downloads are available to eligible Hulu Premium (No Ads) subscribers for selected library content on supported iOS and Android devices. They are not available on computers or TV-connected devices.
iPhone and iPad
- Open the Hulu app and go to Downloads.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Video Quality.
- Select Standard or High.
Android phones and tablets
- Open the Hulu app and select Account.
- Open Settings, then Downloads.
- Choose Video Quality.
- Select Standard or High.
Hulu does not state a fixed resolution or bitrate for the Standard and High download choices in the supplied help information. Treat them as separate download profiles, not as direct equivalents to the web player’s SD, 720p, 1080p, or 4K labels.

Download limits and expiration
| Rule | Hulu’s stated limit or timing | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Storage limit | Up to 25 downloads | Across up to five supported mobile devices. |
| Unwatched expiration | Generally 30 days | Applies to eligible downloaded content; plan, region, device, and title rules can vary. |
| Started-download expiration | Generally 48 hours | Once playback starts; exact availability is title- and plan-dependent. |
| Supported locations | Supported iOS and Android devices | Downloads are unavailable on computers and TV-connected devices. |
Because downloads are title- and plan-dependent, a download icon may be absent even for a program that streams normally. Confirm that the subscription, mobile device, app version, and specific title are eligible.

Troubleshoot soft video, missing 4K, or missing HDR
The picture is soft or stuck below HD
- Check whether the title itself is available in HD and whether the player’s Quality menu offers a higher option.
- Measure or verify that the connection has at least 3 Mbps for the library, with additional headroom for other activity.
- Stop competing streams, downloads, and game updates.
- Confirm the device and browser configuration meets Hulu’s HDCP requirements. Hulu.com supports up to 720p when those requirements are met.
- Restart the player after network or display changes.
4K is not appearing
- Verify the program has a 4K badge.
- Confirm the exact device model is on Hulu’s supported 4K list.
- Check for at least 16 Mbps available to the stream.
- Remove or bypass older receivers, splitters, or adapters that may break the HDCP 2.2 chain.
- Update the Hulu app and device software where the platform provides updates, then restart playback.
HDR is not appearing even though 4K works
- Check whether the title carries an HDR designation; 4K does not imply HDR.
- Confirm that the display and playback device support the HDR format offered for that title.
- Verify every link in the HDMI path supports HDCP 2.2.
- Check the television’s enhanced HDMI or HDR input mode and restart the device after changing it.
Captions or autoplay do not change
- Make the change while the program is actively playing, using the gear-shaped Settings menu.
- Reopen the menu to confirm the toggle or language selection was saved.
- Test another title to determine whether the issue is limited to one program.
- On downloads, do not expect Autoplay to advance episodes; Hulu disables it for downloaded playback.
- If captions remain missing or out of sync, follow Hulu’s device-specific caption troubleshooting route.
Practical presets for common situations
Watching on a laptop or desktop browser
Use a stable connection of at least 3 Mbps for library playback, open the player’s Quality menu only to inspect available choices, and set captions or Autoplay from the same gear menu. Expect a maximum of 720p on Hulu.com, subject to configuration and HDCP.
Watching 4K movies on a television
Select a title with a 4K badge, use a Hulu-listed 4K device, provide at least 16 Mbps, and verify an HDCP 2.2-capable HDMI path. If HDR is also desired, match the title’s HDR format to the display and device.
Watching live TV
Plan for Hulu’s recommended 8.0 Mbps for live streams and leave capacity for other household activity. Live playback may expose different quality options than an on-demand title.
Traveling with downloads
On an eligible Premium (No Ads) plan, choose High under the mobile app’s download video-quality setting when storage allows, or Standard to conserve space. Download only on supported iOS or Android devices, and remember that unwatched items generally expire after 30 days while started items generally expire after 48 hours.
Bottom line
The best Hulu setup is a stable network, a supported playback chain, and the correct in-player control for the job. Keep quality adaptive, meet the bandwidth target for the format you want, verify title and device eligibility before troubleshooting 4K or HDR, and use the gear menu for subtitles and Autoplay. Treat downloads separately: they have their own Standard/High quality choice, storage limits, expiration windows, and no automatic episode advance.
