Huawei rates the earbuds for up to 10 hours of SD music with ANC off versus 6.5 hours with ANC on; the charging-case totals are 40 and 24 hours respectively under Huawei’s laboratory conditions.
For bass, use the app’s sound-effect preset or create a custom EQ with a modest lift in the lowest bands. Huawei confirms preset and custom EQ controls but does not publish a FreeBuds Neo-specific slider recipe, so any EQ starting point is a listening aid, not an official specification.

Set up the earbuds before tuning sound
- Open the companion app. Launch HUAWEI AI Life, or HUAWEI Audio Connect where that app is the supported option, and select the FreeBuds Neo earbud card.
- Install firmware updates. The earbud card includes a firmware-update control. Apply an available update before judging call quality, noise control, gestures, or battery life.
- Check the battery display. The card reports the earbuds’ and case’s charge levels, helping you distinguish a settings problem from a nearly empty case.
- Seat both earbuds consistently. A stable fit gives the microphones and noise-control system the same acoustic conditions on every call. Huawei supports one-earbud ANC/Awareness, but recommends both earbuds for a better noise-cancellation experience.
- Open the controls you need. The card exposes noise control, sound effects or custom EQ, gesture assignments, and firmware updates. Menu names can vary slightly between AI Life and Audio Connect versions.

Both-earbud use also gives the system a consistent left-right acoustic reference. If one side is loose, the microphones may still work, but your own perception of the caller can become unbalanced and you may raise the volume unnecessarily. Reseat both buds before changing any EQ setting.
Rely on the call-noise microphone system
On the product page, Huawei describes “stable and clear calls” from three microphones and a bone-conduction microphone. The system is intended to suppress ambient noise while enhancing vocal frequencies, so leave the documented call-noise feature enabled when you are near traffic, fans, or conversation.
Huawei cites its call-clarity claim under background noise of 95 dB and wind of 9 m/s. Those are test conditions for the manufacturer’s statement, not a promise that every street, vehicle, or weather condition will sound identical. Wind hitting the microphone ports can still overwhelm speech, so stepping out of a direct airflow is often more effective than increasing volume.
Use Voice mode when you need awareness
When you must hear a colleague, platform announcement, or cashier, open Noise control > Awareness and enable Voice. Huawei describes the mode this way: it suppresses low-frequency noises and makes human voices clearer.

If you are moving through traffic or waiting for a train, choose the mode that preserves the information you need rather than simply the one that sounds quieter.

Call troubleshooting order
- Your voice sounds distant: reseat both earbuds, confirm the Bluetooth input is FreeBuds Neo, and retry with the call-noise feature enabled.
- The other person hears wind: move away from direct airflow and keep both earbuds seated; the published wind figure is a test condition, not an operating limit.
- You cannot hear a nearby speaker: switch from Noise canceling to Awareness > Voice and pause music or a ringtone if Voice appears ineffective.
- Only one side behaves differently: check both battery indicators in the earbud card, return both buds to the case briefly, and reconnect before changing EQ or gesture settings.
- The call keeps using the phone: open the phone’s Bluetooth controls and verify FreeBuds Neo is selected for calls as well as media. Reconnect before testing another mode.
- Speech is muffled after an EQ change: restore the neutral or original sound effect, then retest the call. Bass adjustments affect what you hear, even though they do not repair a microphone connection.
Get stronger bass without losing vocals
Start with the sound-effect selector
In the FreeBuds Neo card, open Sound effect settings. If a bass-oriented preset is listed, select it first. A preset is the quickest way to hear the intended tonal change and gives you a reference before making manual adjustments.
Build a restrained custom EQ
Huawei documents custom-EQ creation for the earbuds but does not publish a model-specific numeric recipe. Start with a small lift in the lowest-frequency sliders, listen to a familiar track with a clear kick drum and lead vocal, and adjust one band at a time. Stop as soon as the kick gains weight; a large low-end boost can obscure consonants and make calls or podcasts sound muddy.
Compare the custom setting with the original or a neutral preset at the same volume. If the bass seems to disappear when you move your head, fix the physical fit before adding more EQ. A consistent ear-tip seal is a practical prerequisite for perceived low-end fullness, although Huawei does not publish a measured seal test for this model.
Use several kinds of material when checking the result: a bass line for weight, a snare or handclap for impact, and a vocal recording for intelligibility. If the bass boost sounds impressive for a few seconds but masks words, reduce it. Louder often sounds fuller, so match the volume as closely as possible when comparing profiles.
Use different profiles for music and speech
For music, keep the bass lift modest and evaluate vocals as well as drums. For podcasts and calls, a flatter setting usually preserves speech detail better than an aggressive bass profile. Because the app lets you change sound effects and gestures from the earbud card, you can switch deliberately rather than leaving a heavy music preset active for every use.
EQ cannot compensate for a damaged seal, a blocked ear tip, or a codec that the phone does not support. Solve fit and connection issues first, then decide whether the remaining tonal balance needs adjustment.

Huawei’s published runtimes are laboratory figures using a HUAWEI Pura 80 Pro+, AAC, 50% volume, connection-quality priority, and otherwise default settings. Huawei warns that actual life changes with volume, audio source, environmental interference, enabled features, and usage habits.

Turning ANC off therefore adds as much as 3.5 hours of SD playback on a single charge in Huawei’s test, and the case-assisted difference is 16 hours. Those are maximum figures, not guarantees: louder listening, a different phone, interference, or additional features can shorten them.
The practical choice is straightforward: leave ANC on for isolation when you need it, and turn noise control off for quiet rooms, home listening, or other situations where isolation adds little value. The SD figures represent Huawei’s stated maximums under its test setup, not a guaranteed time for every phone or listening pattern.

Choose ANC, Awareness, or off by situation
- ANC on: use it for steady low-frequency noise such as engines or air-conditioning when concentration matters more than maximum runtime.
- Awareness: use it outdoors or around people when you need environmental cues. Select Voice if nearby speech is the priority.
- Noise control off: use it in quiet spaces to pursue the longest battery life in Huawei’s published figures.
- Dynamic: in AI Life, open Noise canceling > Dynamic when available. Huawei says this mode chooses an optimal setting according to the surroundings; availability depends on the app and required modules or device support.
Dynamic is convenient when conditions change, but it is not the same as permanently maximizing battery life. If runtime is the priority, explicitly choose noise control off whenever you can tolerate the surrounding sound.

If you are trying to stretch a charge, start with the change Huawei quantifies directly: disable ANC. Understand gestures and app controls
FreeBuds Neo supports double-tap, triple-tap, swipe, and press-and-hold gestures. Open the earbud card’s gesture-customization screen to assign the available actions. Set controls around your most common decisions: playback, answering or ending calls, changing noise control, and volume. If an accidental press repeatedly changes ANC during calls, move that action to a less frequently triggered gesture or disable the assignment where the app permits.
