If you mean Hogwarts Legacy, the best settings are not one universal preset. Start with the game’s built-in benchmark, use its recommended global preset, then tune resolution, upscaling and frame-rate limits for your display. Keep ray tracing disabled while solving stutter or low frame rates. This approach preserves image quality where your hardware has headroom instead of forcing every PC into the same settings.
The instructions below cover PC settings first and PlayStation 5 graphics modes separately. The benchmark and the official hardware targets are useful starting points, but they cannot guarantee identical frame rates in every location, patch or scene.

What “smooth” should mean in Hogwarts Legacy
A smooth game is one that maintains a consistent frame rate rather than briefly reaching a high number and then dropping sharply during traversal, combat or busy castle scenes. Choose a target your display and PC can hold: 30 fps can be appropriate for entry-level hardware, while 60 fps or a higher variable rate suits a 60 Hz, 120 Hz or 144 Hz display. Consistency matters more than an uncapped peak.
There is no single best list of values because resolution, refresh rate, graphics card, processor, memory, VRAM and the frame-rate goal all change the right compromise. Portkey Games states in its Hogwarts Legacy PC Features FAQ: “Making quality adjustments can have an impact on GPU and CPU performance, or VRAM.” Treat every recommendation as a controlled starting point, then check the result in the same demanding area of your game.

Check your hardware before changing sliders
The official PC specifications describe example targets rather than independent benchmark results. Warner Bros. Games’ specifications page, accessed October 13, 2026, lists separate configurations for 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 2160p. They represent different combinations of resolution, quality and frame rate, so match your system to the target you actually want.
| Official target | Processor examples | Memory | Graphics examples | Storage listed | Published resolution and frame rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum / Low | Intel Core i5-6600 or AMD Ryzen 5 1400 | 16 GB RAM | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 4 GB or AMD Radeon RX 470 4 GB | 85 GB HDD | 720p / 30 fps on Low |
| Recommended / High | Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 | 16 GB RAM | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or Intel Arc A770 | 85 GB SSD | 1080p / 60 fps on High |
| Ultra | Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X | 32 GB RAM | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT | 85 GB SSD | 1440p / 60 fps on Ultra |
| Ultra 4K | Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X | 32 GB RAM | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT | 85 GB SSD | 2160p / 60 fps on Ultra |
These are published reference configurations, not a promise that every system with the same parts will hold the listed rate in every scene. Drivers, patches, background processes, cooling and the chosen cap can all change frame times. The support FAQ recommends at least 16 GB of memory and says an SSD is preferred. The specification table nevertheless lists an HDD for the minimum/Low tier. An SSD can help loading and streaming behavior, but the published information does not establish it as a universal cure for graphics-related frame-rate problems.
Set a reliable PC baseline
- Open the benchmark. From the main menu, open Settings, choose Graphics Options, scroll near the bottom and select Run Benchmark.
- Apply the recommendation. The game analyzes your setup and suggests a global quality preset. Accept that recommendation first; it is saved as the recommended global preset.
- Restart your test from a repeatable location. Walk through the same area, rotate the camera and perform the same spell or traversal sequence after each change. Alter only one or two controls at a time so you can identify what helped.
- Choose a frame-rate objective. Set a realistic cap for your panel and hardware before judging image quality. A stable cap is preferable to an uncapped rate that repeatedly oscillates.
The benchmark is a starting point, not a permanent lock. The FAQ allows every graphics control to be adjusted independently, so you can preserve high-quality textures while lowering a setting that is less important to you.

Resolution and upscaling: the largest practical lever
Hogwarts Legacy normally targets the active monitor’s display resolution. The PC menu exposes display resolution, rendering resolution, upscale type, upscale mode and sharpness. Rendering below the monitor’s native resolution reduces the work required for each frame; an upscaler then reconstructs a higher-resolution output.
When to use an upscaler
If native rendering does not hold your target, test the available upscaling technology before dropping several quality settings. The game supports NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR and Intel XeSS, although the exact choices depend on the device. Performance-oriented modes render from a lower internal resolution and generally improve frame rate at the cost of image clarity. Quality-oriented modes retain more detail but provide a smaller performance benefit.
Compare native rendering and each available mode in the same location. Inspect thin railings, hair, foliage and distant architecture for shimmering or softness, and check camera movement for temporal artifacts. Do not assume a particular percentage gain: the result depends on your GPU, output resolution, preset and scene.

Frame generation
The FAQ documents NVIDIA DLSS frame generation as an available control on supported hardware. It creates additional displayed frames, but it does not remove the underlying rendering workload or CPU limits. Evaluate responsiveness as well as the displayed frame counter, especially during rapid camera movement. If controls are missing, your device or driver combination may not support them.
Frame caps, VSync and variable-refresh displays
Use the in-game frame-rate limit, your driver control panel or your display’s variable-refresh range to establish a ceiling your system can maintain. There is no evidence-based universal cap such as 60 fps for every PC. A 60 Hz panel and a 144 Hz variable-refresh panel have different sensible targets.
VSync is enabled by default and limits the GPU to no more than the monitor’s refresh rate. Keep it on if you see tearing and your system can stay near the panel’s refresh; test it off only when latency or fluctuating performance makes that trade-off worthwhile. The official FAQ notes that “A lower framerate may reduce stuttering.” A lower, stable cap can therefore feel smoother than an unstable higher one.
Ray tracing: leave it off while troubleshooting
Ray tracing is disabled by default. Separate controls cover ray-traced reflections, shadows and ambient occlusion. The FAQ says ray tracing affects both GPU and CPU performance, and changing the ray-tracing setting requires a restart.
- Turn ray tracing off while establishing your baseline.
- Confirm that your chosen cap remains stable during exploration and combat.
- If you have performance headroom, enable one ray-tracing option, restart when prompted and repeat the same test.
- Keep it enabled only if the visual improvement is worth the frame-time cost on your machine.
Testing ray tracing one feature at a time makes it possible to identify whether reflections, shadows or ambient occlusion are responsible for a new hitch.

What each individual quality setting changes
The official FAQ describes the visual purpose of the sliders below. It does not publish a universal performance ranking for them; the effect varies with hardware and scene. Use the descriptions to decide what to lower first according to your own priorities.
| Setting | What it controls | Practical tuning choice |
|---|---|---|
| Effects Quality | Complexity and fidelity of particle effects | Reduce it if spell impacts, smoke or other effects coincide with drops; retain it if combat effects are a priority. |
| Material Quality | Material quality throughout the world | Lower it when you prefer steadier performance over surface detail across environments. |
| Fog Quality | Resolution of volumetric fog | Reduce it if dense mist is a visual compromise you can accept. |
| Sky Quality | Atmospheric sky and volumetric clouds | Lower it when cloud detail matters less than stable frame times. |
| Foliage Quality | Density and complexity of foliage | Test it in outdoor areas; use a lower value if vegetation-heavy locations are difficult to hold. |
| Post-Process Quality | Ambient occlusion, depth of field, motion blur and lens flares | Adjust it if you dislike blur or lens effects, or if post-processing coincides with instability. |
| Shadow Quality | Shadow resolution and viewing distance | Lower it when distant or numerous shadows are less important than consistent frame time. |
| Texture Quality | Texture resolution | Keep it as high as available VRAM allows; lower it when you see memory-related hitching or texture problems. |
| View Distance Quality | Distant-object fidelity and the distance at which small details appear | Reduce it if distant detail is an acceptable trade for steadier traversal. |
| Population Quality | Non-essential NPCs and creatures | Lower it if crowded locations appear CPU-limited; this changes background population rather than essential characters. |
Because the same control can stress different resources on different systems, monitor whether the GPU is fully occupied, whether one or more CPU cores are saturated, and whether memory or VRAM usage is close to its limit. The observation tells you which type of adjustment is most likely to help, without pretending that one slider is always the most expensive.
How to compare competing settings
When two profiles seem viable, compare them on the same four axes instead of relying on a single average-FPS number. First, confirm the target display resolution: a 1080p profile has a very different workload from 1440p or 2160p. Second, check consistency against your chosen cap in demanding areas, not just an empty hallway. Third, compare image quality at rest and during camera movement; native rendering may look cleaner, while DLSS, FSR or XeSS may deliver smoother motion with some softness or shimmer. Finally, identify the bottleneck. A GPU-limited system benefits from rendering resolution or upscaling changes, while a CPU-, memory- or VRAM-limited system may need a different slider or a lower cap.
Feature cost matters as well. Ray tracing can improve reflections, shadows and ambient occlusion, but it draws on both GPU and CPU resources and requires a restart when toggled. A high-refresh display is useful only if the hardware can sustain the corresponding frame rate. On a variable-refresh display, select a cap that stays inside the supported range rather than chasing a peak the system cannot maintain.

If the frame rate is low everywhere
- Verify the display and rendering resolutions, then test an appropriate upscaling mode.
- Apply a frame-rate cap your hardware can sustain.
- Disable ray tracing and retest after the required restart.
- Lower the global preset one step, then restore individual settings that matter most to you.
If stutter appears during movement or when entering new areas
- Try a lower frame-rate cap; the official FAQ specifically identifies this as a possible stutter reduction.
- Check system memory and VRAM usage while the hitch occurs.
- Use the SSD-preferred configuration where possible, while recognizing that storage alone is not proven to fix every graphics problem.
- Change one setting at a time and repeat the same route so streaming hitches are not confused with a general GPU limit.
If image quality becomes too soft
- Move from a performance upscaling mode toward a quality mode.
- Raise rendering resolution before raising every quality slider.
- Check sharpness and inspect foliage, hair and fine architectural lines at the same camera distance.
If lowering graphics settings barely changes performance
The limitation may be CPU-side, memory-related or caused by a frame cap rather than GPU rendering. Population Quality, View Distance Quality and effects can change CPU work, while textures and resolution can pressure VRAM or the GPU. Compare GPU utilization and frame-time behavior instead of assuming that a lower preset must solve a processor or memory bottleneck.
Common mistakes that make tuning harder
- Changing everything at once: If the preset, resolution, upscaler and ray tracing all change together, you cannot tell which adjustment helped. Keep a short record and alter one or two controls per test.
- Judging a setting in the wrong scene: A quiet room may hide a problem that appears in a crowded courtyard, outdoor foliage or a traversal sequence. Repeat the same route after each change.
- Chasing the highest displayed number: An uncapped counter can look impressive while frame times fluctuate. A lower cap that the system consistently holds is usually the better target.
- Assuming every option exists on every PC: Upscaling and frame-generation controls depend on the device. Missing DLSS, FSR, XeSS or frame-generation options are not necessarily configuration errors.
- Expecting an SSD or new graphics card to fix every hitch: Storage and GPU upgrades address particular bottlenecks. They cannot automatically solve a CPU limit, insufficient memory, thermal issue or unsuitable cap.
Choosing a PC upgrade without guessing
Use the official target table as a compatibility reference, not as a shopping guarantee. First decide whether you want 1080p, 1440p or 2160p output and which frame rate you can sustain. Then compare your processor, graphics card, 16 GB or 32 GB memory capacity, VRAM and storage with the corresponding published tier.
A graphics-card upgrade is relevant when the GPU is saturated at your chosen resolution and upscaling cannot provide acceptable clarity. It is not a universal solution: a CPU limit, insufficient memory, thermal throttling or an unsuitable frame cap can remain after a faster card is installed. Confirm the bottleneck with the benchmark and repeatable in-game testing before spending money.

If you are comparing products, “graphics card for Hogwarts Legacy” is a useful search phrase, but the game’s official tiers should determine the comparison. Match the card to the resolution and quality target you can actually use, verify power, case and system compatibility, and compare total upgrade cost rather than assuming the most expensive card is automatically the best value. No universal purchase price or single winning model is established by the published specifications.

Keep the settings stable after updates
Game patches, graphics drivers, operating-system updates and hardware changes can alter frame times or available options. After a major update, rerun Run Benchmark, confirm your resolution and upscaling choices, and test the same demanding route before changing several settings. If an option disappears, the device-dependent availability described in the FAQ may be the reason.
A concise starting profile
For most PC players seeking decent graphics with dependable performance, accept the benchmark’s preset, use native rendering only when it holds the target, otherwise test the least aggressive quality upscaling mode that remains clear, set a cap appropriate to the display, keep VSync on while checking for tearing, and leave ray tracing off until the baseline is stable. Fine-tune the individual setting whose visual compromise bothers you least, using repeatable tests rather than internet-wide FPS promises.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which game do these settings cover?
They cover Hogwarts Legacy. The title can be interpreted broadly, so the recommendations assume that game and its PC Features FAQ and official PC specifications.
Should I run the benchmark before every graphics change?
Run it first to obtain the recommended global preset. After that, change one or two controls at a time and retest in the same demanding area. Rerun the benchmark after major patches, driver changes or hardware changes.
Which upscaler should I choose: DLSS, FSR or XeSS?
Use whichever option your device provides, then compare image clarity and motion in the same scene. Performance modes generally raise frame rate by rendering internally below the output resolution, but they trade away some image quality. There is no universal winner or guaranteed FPS gain.
Is an SSD required for Hogwarts Legacy?
The official FAQ says an SSD is preferred, while the official minimum/Low specification lists an 85 GB HDD. An SSD may improve loading and streaming behavior, but it is not established as a universal fix for low graphics performance.
Does enabling ray tracing require a restart?
Yes. Ray tracing is off by default, has separate reflection, shadow and ambient-occlusion controls, affects GPU and CPU performance, and requires a restart when toggled.
Why does lowering the preset barely improve my frame rate?
You may be CPU-, memory- or VRAM-limited, or a frame cap may already be controlling performance. Check utilization and frame times, then test resolution, Population Quality, View Distance Quality, effects and the cap rather than assuming every lower setting reduces the same bottleneck.
Which PS5 mode is best for smooth play?
Performance favors frame rate. Fidelity favors resolution and image quality. Fidelity with ray tracing adds ray-traced presentation and requires a reboot. Balanced and HFR Performance are available only with supported output devices, so choose among the modes your display supports.
Should I buy a new graphics card for this game?
Only after confirming a GPU bottleneck at your chosen resolution and quality target. Compare your system with the official 1080p, 1440p or 2160p tiers, and remember that a faster card will not automatically fix a CPU, memory, thermal or frame-cap limitation.

The Bottom Line
For smooth Hogwarts Legacy performance, run the built-in benchmark, use its preset as a baseline, match rendering resolution and upscaling to your display, cap the frame rate below what your system cannot consistently hold, and keep ray tracing off until performance is stable. Tune individual settings according to the bottleneck you observe, and treat the official hardware tiers as reference targets rather than guarantees.
