Play Halo 2 next, then Halo 3. They are the direct continuation of Halo: Combat Evolved and the original trilogy. If you would rather start a completely new campaign, Titanfall 2 delivers inventive first-person-shooter levels built around wall-running, double jumps and sliding. If you want the original adventure with updated presentation, Halo: Campaign Evolved retells the same story rather than continuing it.
Your best choice depends on what “after” means to you: the next chapter of Master Chief’s story, a similar-feeling campaign with different movement, a replay of the original with modern changes, or a more distant alternative. This guide separates those paths so you can choose without accidentally skipping the trilogy’s order.
Quick answer: what should you play after Halo: Combat Evolved?
- For story continuity: play Halo 2, followed by Halo 3. Halo 2 is the immediate narrative follow-up; Halo 3 picks up after it and concludes the original trilogy’s events.
- For a new single-player FPS campaign: choose Titanfall 2. It is not a Halo sequel, but its wall-running, double jumps, sliding and inventive level design make it a strong alternative for players who value campaign variety.
- For the original story with a modernized presentation: look at Halo: Campaign Evolved. PlayStation describes it as a faithful remake of Combat Evolved with three bonus missions, so it is a return to the same story rather than a sequel.
- For the simplest way to continue Halo: check Halo: The Master Chief Collection on your platform. GameSpot reports that it keeps the older Halo games playable on Xbox and PC and that the mainline games in its list are available through Game Pass; catalog, region and platform details can change.
If you are asking, “Should I play Halo 2 next?” the answer is yes unless you specifically want a separate campaign or a remake of the first game.

Why Halo 2 is the correct next game
Halo 2 is not merely a game with a similar setting or gunplay. It is the immediate story follow-up to Combat Evolved, making it the right choice when “after” means “what happens next?” The game expands the series with new vehicles, weapons and environments. Metacritic’s listing also identifies the ability to play as a Covenant Elite, giving the campaign a perspective that was not available in the same way in the original game.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That combination matters for first-time players. Continuing directly preserves the context, characters and stakes established in Combat Evolved, while the additional playable perspective and expanded sandbox keep the sequel from feeling like a simple replay of the first campaign. You can approach it as the second step in a planned trilogy rather than as an unrelated recommendation.
What changes from Combat Evolved
- More sandbox variety: the published listing calls out new vehicles, weapons and environments.
- A different playable perspective: you can play as a Covenant Elite, not only the series’ familiar human supersoldier.
- Direct narrative handoff: it follows the events of Combat Evolved instead of resetting the premise.
Those are the reasons to begin here before trying a different FPS. A new game can match the broad appeal of a campaign, but it cannot provide the next chapter of Halo’s original narrative.
Play Halo 3 after Halo 2
Once you finish Halo 2, continue to Halo 3. Its listing states that it picks up where Halo 2 left off and concludes the events begun in Combat Evolved. In practical terms, the intended order for the original trilogy is:
- Halo: Combat Evolved
- Halo 2
- Halo 3
Starting with Halo 3 immediately after Combat Evolved would skip the middle chapter and weaken the narrative handoff. It is a sensible destination for readers who want the trilogy’s conclusion, but not the best immediate follow-up if you have not played Halo 2.
Why the order matters
The distinction is simple: Halo 2 continues the story, and Halo 3 completes the original trilogy’s arc. Treating both as interchangeable “Halo games” loses the reason to play them in sequence. If story continuity is your priority, do not substitute an alternative FPS between them unless you deliberately want a break.

The easiest access route: Halo: The Master Chief Collection
A collection can remove the practical problem of finding separate older releases. GameSpot reports that Halo: The Master Chief Collection keeps the older Halo games playable on Xbox and PC and that the mainline games included in its list are available through Game Pass.
Availability is not permanent or universal. Game Pass catalogs, regional rights, platform support and subscription terms can change, so check the current store or service listing for your country before relying on it. The same check applies if you need a particular edition, language, downloadable content or multiplayer feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to use the collection for the trilogy
- Confirm that the collection is listed for your Xbox or PC platform.
- Check whether your region’s current Game Pass catalog includes the games you intend to play, or whether you need to purchase the collection.
- Install Combat Evolved first if you have not finished it; otherwise select Halo 2 as the next campaign.
- After completing Halo 2, launch Halo 3 rather than jumping to a non-sequential entry.
- Review the current store page for campaign, co-op and online requirements before inviting another player.
This route is about convenience, not a different story order. The recommended sequence remains Combat Evolved, Halo 2, then Halo 3.
Choose Titanfall 2 when you want a new campaign
Titanfall 2 is the strongest alternative when you have finished Combat Evolved and want another focused FPS campaign, but it should not be described as a Halo sequel. It has its own setting and story. The connection is the campaign experience: you move through handcrafted levels, fight through first-person encounters and learn a distinctive combat system.
PC Gamer highlights its inventive level design and describes combat shaped by wall-running, double jumps and sliding. Those systems create a noticeably more mobile rhythm than the grounded movement many players associate with classic Halo. You are not continuing Master Chief’s story; you are choosing a different design philosophy built around speed and traversal.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

What feels familiar
- A dedicated single-player campaign rather than a recommendation based only on competitive multiplayer.
- First-person combat that rewards learning a set of weapons, movement options and encounter spaces.
- Levels designed to provide more than a sequence of identical corridors.
What feels different
- Movement is central: wall-running, double jumps and sliding are not optional flavor; they shape how you approach spaces and fights.
- It is a new story: there is no narrative continuation from Combat Evolved, Halo 2 or Halo 3.
- The campaign’s identity comes from level invention: the appeal is experimentation with traversal and set-piece structure, not recreating Halo’s sandbox.
Choose Titanfall 2 when your priority is “give me another excellent FPS campaign.” Do not choose it when your priority is “tell me what happens after the first Halo.”
Return to the original with Halo: Campaign Evolved
Halo: Campaign Evolved answers a different question: what if you want to play the original campaign again in a modernized form? PlayStation describes it as a faithful, modernized remake of Combat Evolved and lists three new bonus missions. It also explains that players do not need other Halo games because the remake contains the original story.
That makes it a parallel starting point, not a sequel. Playing it after Combat Evolved means revisiting the same core adventure with updated presentation and targeted changes, not advancing to the events of Halo 2.
Why choose the remake
- You want the original campaign’s structure and story without moving into the trilogy’s next chapter.
- You prefer a modernized presentation to the older release.
- You want additional campaign content: the official PlayStation page lists three bonus missions.
- You are introducing someone to the original story and want a current version that does not require prior Halo knowledge.
What the developers say about the changes
In an Xbox Wire hands-on article dated June 10, 2026, Creative Director Max Szlagor called one mission “one of the all-time iconic and beloved missions from Halo: Combat Evolved” and said it exemplifies the core sandbox experience. He also said the team made “more targeted improvements to areas of frustration, slow pacing, or navigation confusion based on where players wanted to see adjustments.”
Those comments describe the remake’s design goals and the original game’s level identity. They do not make it a continuation, and they do not establish that it plays exactly like another FPS. Treat it as a refreshed version of the first campaign with added missions and selective changes.

Check availability before you commit
The PlayStation page establishes the remake’s description and feature count, but platform and availability details should be checked on the current listing for your region. Editions, launch timing and access conditions can differ by market. If your main goal is the next story chapter, verify that you are selecting Halo 2 rather than the remake.
Where DOOM fits
DOOM is a secondary branch for readers who are open to a substantially different FPS style. The available evidence does not establish it as a close match for Halo: Combat Evolved, so it should not replace Halo 2 in a story-first play order or be presented as the most similar game.
Use it as a “change the pace” choice: finish the original trilogy or pause after Combat Evolved, then move to a more distant FPS if you want a different tone and design emphasis. The important trade-off is distance from Halo’s specific campaign identity.
Compare the main choices by the reason you are playing
| Game | Relationship to Combat Evolved | Campaign identity | Distinctive evidence | Best choice when you want |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Halo 2 | Immediate narrative sequel | Continuation of the original story with expanded series elements | New vehicles, weapons and environments; playable Covenant Elite | The next chapter |
| Halo 3 | Follows Halo 2 and concludes the original trilogy’s events | Trilogy conclusion | Its listing says it picks up where Halo 2 left off | The conclusion after playing Halo 2 |
| Titanfall 2 | Separate story, not a Halo sequel | Campaign-focused FPS built around movement and inventive level design | Wall-running, double jumps and sliding | A new single-player FPS experience |
| Halo: Campaign Evolved | Remake of the same story | Modernized return to the original campaign | Three new bonus missions; targeted improvements to pacing and navigation areas | The original story in updated form |
| DOOM | Separate FPS with no established close-match claim here | More distant alternative | Use only as a broader genre branch | A deliberately different direction |
Decision guide: pick your route in under a minute
If you want the story to continue
Start Halo 2. When it is complete, play Halo 3. A collection such as Halo: The Master Chief Collection may simplify access, subject to the current platform and subscription catalog.

If you want something that is not another Halo game
Choose Titanfall 2. Expect a new story and a movement system centered on wall-running, double jumps and sliding. The trade-off is that its similarities are about campaign appeal and FPS structure, not characters or continuity.

If you want to replay the first campaign
Choose Halo: Campaign Evolved. It retells Combat Evolved, adds three bonus missions and modernizes the presentation. Do not expect it to advance the trilogy’s plot.
If you want a broader FPS change
Consider DOOM only after accepting that it is a more distant match. It belongs on the “different style” branch, not the “closest Halo follow-up” branch.
How to plan your playthrough around co-op and platform access
Co-op and platform access are useful decision criteria, but they are also the details most likely to vary by edition, device, region and current service catalog. The available listings establish the narrative relationships and the major campaign differences above; they do not provide a single universal co-op or platform matrix for every choice.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Before downloading or buying, check the current official listing for:
- The exact platform edition you own or intend to purchase.
- Whether the campaign supports the co-op mode you want and whether every participant needs the game.
- Online-service, account or subscription requirements.
- Regional availability and language options.
- Whether the listing is for the original release, a collection, or the remake.
For a group that wants to stay inside the original Halo story, verify the relevant campaign in the collection and play in sequence. For a solo player choosing by campaign design, Titanfall 2 is the clearest alternative. For someone returning to the first game with friends or a newer player, compare the current co-op terms for the specific edition rather than assuming that every version has identical features.
A practical order for different kinds of players
The first-time Halo player
- Finish Halo: Combat Evolved.
- Play Halo 2 immediately to preserve the narrative handoff.
- Play Halo 3 to complete the original trilogy’s events.
- Try Titanfall 2 afterward if you want a separate campaign with more movement experimentation.
The returning player who wants a refreshed version
- Choose Halo: Campaign Evolved if you want the first story again with modernized presentation.
- Use its three bonus missions as additional content rather than as a new chronological chapter.
- Return to Halo 2 when you are ready to continue the trilogy.
The player who has finished Combat Evolved and wants variety
- Skip directly to Titanfall 2 for a new campaign.
- Learn its movement vocabulary—wall-running, double jumps and sliding—before judging it against Halo’s combat rhythm.
- Come back to Halo 2 when you want story continuity rather than a new game.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Starting with Halo 3 because it is newer: it follows Halo 2; skipping the middle chapter disrupts the intended trilogy order.
- Calling Titanfall 2 a Halo sequel: it is a separate campaign whose connection is the FPS format, not the story.
- Treating Campaign Evolved as the next chapter: it retells the original campaign and adds bonus missions.
- Assuming a subscription catalog is permanent: check the current Game Pass and regional listing before planning a playthrough around it.
- Using “most like Halo” without naming the dimension: specify whether you mean story continuity, campaign focus, movement, sandbox variety or access route.
Final recommendation
For the direct answer, play Halo 2 next and Halo 3 after that. Choose Titanfall 2 when you want a new, movement-driven campaign; choose Halo: Campaign Evolved when you want the original story modernized; and treat DOOM as a deliberately more distant FPS option. Check current platform, co-op and subscription details on the relevant listing before purchasing or installing.
