The best free music downloader for a PC depends on what you are downloading. For artist-authorized files and purchases, JDownloader 2 is the most approachable general-purpose choice. For users comfortable with commands, yt-dlp offers the most control over supported websites and audio formats. Free Download Manager is useful for managing ordinary direct downloads, but it is not a built-in MP3 search service.
Use these tools for music you own, have permission to download, or that the source explicitly offers for download. They do not turn subscription streams into unrestricted music files, and downloading copyrighted music without permission may violate the source’s terms or copyright law.

1. yt-dlp: best for control and automation
yt-dlp is a command-line audio and video downloader supporting thousands of sites. It is not a conventional music app with a search box, catalogue or playlists. You give it a URL, then specify the format, quality, filename and destination.

It is the strongest option here when you regularly download permitted audio and want predictable results. You can save a playlist, embed cover art, preserve metadata, choose a naming scheme and keep an archive so later runs fetch only new items.

Basic audio download
After installing yt-dlp and FFmpeg, open Command Prompt, PowerShell or Terminal and run:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 "VIDEO-OR-TRACK-URL"The -x option extracts audio. It requires both ffmpeg and ffprobe; yt-dlp cannot convert to MP3 by itself. Supported conversion formats include AAC, ALAC, FLAC, M4A, MP3, Opus, Vorbis and WAV.
For higher VBR quality, use:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 --audio-quality 0 "VIDEO-OR-TRACK-URL"For VBR audio, 0 is best and 10 is worst. The default is 5. You can also specify a fixed bitrate such as 128K.

yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 --embed-metadata --embed-thumbnail "VIDEO-OR-TRACK-URL"Metadata and thumbnail embedding are disabled by default. The command above asks yt-dlp to place available tags in the file and use the source thumbnail as cover art.
Choose a music folder and filename
yt-dlp -P "C:UsersYourNameMusic" -o "%(artist)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s" "VIDEO-OR-TRACK-URL"-P sets the download path, while -o defines the output template. If a site does not provide an artist field, the filename may contain a blank or fallback value, so check the result before relying on a large automated job.
Download only new playlist items
yt-dlp --download-archive archive.txt "PLAYLIST-URL"The archive records successfully downloaded identifiers. On later runs, yt-dlp skips those entries and downloads only items not already recorded.
Important yt-dlp problems
- PowerShell or Command Prompt breaks the URL: quote URLs containing
&. For example:yt-dlp "https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=4&v=BaW_jenozKc". Without quotes, the shell may treat the ampersand as a control character. - Audio extraction fails: install FFmpeg and make sure both
ffmpegandffprobeare available to yt-dlp. - A package-manager build behaves strangely: distributions sometimes ship an outdated or broken build. Install the latest official release or report the package problem to its maintainer.
- A login-protected, permitted download needs cookies:
yt-dlp --cookies-from-browser chrome "URL"can read cookies from Chrome. Treat exported cookie files as passwords: they can contain cookies for all sites, not just the URL you supplied. - HTTP Error 400 appears with a cookie file: the file may not be in Mozilla/Netscape format. Its first line must be exactly
# HTTP Cookie Fileor# Netscape HTTP Cookie File, and its line endings must match the operating system.
For release binaries, yt-dlp -U updates the installation within its current release channel. Stable is the default channel; the project describes nightly as the recommended channel for regular users, while master is a canary channel that may contain regressions.

2. JDownloader 2: best graphical downloader
JDownloader 2 is a free, open-source download-management tool. It suits people who do not want to remember command syntax: copy a permitted download URL, let JDownloader collect the link, review the detected files and start the download.
Its useful download-manager features include pause and resume controls where the source supports them, bandwidth limits, automatic archive extraction and an extensible framework. It can be a practical choice for artist download pages, album archives and other sources that expose normal downloadable files.
Installing JDownloader 2
On Windows, the official page currently labels one option Download Alternative Installer (x86, Java 1.8) and describes it as having no optional software offers. The same page lists installers for current macOS releases, legacy macOS downloads, a Linux installer and a multi-operating-system JAR without a dedicated installer.
Check the official download page rather than copying an installer link from a third-party site. The JDownloader team reported that, during May 6–7, 2026 UTC, some installer links on its site pointed to malicious files; those links were removed and the configuration was fixed. The warning specifically concerned users who installed through the Alternative Installer or Linux shell-installer link during that period.

JDownloader is a download manager, not a music catalogue. It is best when you already have a legitimate file or page URL. It may detect several downloadable items on a page and let you select what to save, but it does not give you a legal music library or a subscription-stream conversion feature.
There is also an important streaming limitation. JDownloader’s support documentation says interrupted HLS downloads cannot be resumed and HLS downloads cannot use multi-chunk downloading. A message such as Segment XX not loaded generally means the server did not provide one or more media segments. JDownloader normally refuses to silently skip missing segments because that could create an incomplete audio or video file.
3. Free Download Manager: best for direct files
Free Download Manager (FDM) is a general download manager rather than a dedicated music downloader. Its official feature list includes segmented downloads, interrupted-download resumption, browser integration, bandwidth management, torrent and magnet-link support, and add-ons for supported websites.

The official site currently shows Free Download Manager 6.34. It lists Windows, macOS, Android and Linux versions; the site’s current macOS detail identifies FDM 6.34.3 for macOS 13 or later.

FDM is a good choice when an artist, label or website gives you a direct MP3, FLAC, WAV or ZIP link and you want better queueing and bandwidth control than a browser provides. Add the direct URL, choose a destination folder, and let FDM manage the transfer.
It should not be described as a standalone MP3 downloader with a built-in music search catalogue. The current official documentation does not describe a dedicated music-search interface, audio-conversion command or music library. If you need to convert an authorized video URL into MP3, yt-dlp plus FFmpeg is the more appropriate tool.
Best legal source for downloadable music: Bandcamp
Before choosing a downloader, check whether the artist already provides a proper download. Bandcamp says its downloaded audio files are 100% DRM-free. A purchase or artist-authorized free download gives you an ordinary audio file that can be saved and played locally; you do not need a streaming ripper.
For a Bandcamp purchase, use Bandcamp’s own download control first. If the resulting file is large or arrives as an archive, JDownloader 2 or FDM can help manage the transfer. That is a different job from extracting audio from a stream.

Which app should you choose?
- Choose JDownloader 2 if you want a graphical interface and mainly download files from pages you already trust.
- Choose yt-dlp if you are comfortable with Terminal or PowerShell and need MP3/FLAC conversion, metadata, cover art, playlist handling or automation.
- Choose Free Download Manager if you mainly receive direct audio links and want segmented downloads, queues, browser integration and bandwidth controls.
- Use the source’s own download button when purchasing or claiming music from Bandcamp or another artist-authorized service.
What these apps cannot guarantee
No downloader can repair missing source segments, invent unavailable metadata or make a restricted stream legally downloadable. Audio conversion also does not improve the original recording: converting a low-quality source to 320 Kbps MP3 only creates a larger file with the same underlying limitations.
Keep cookie files private, download installers from official sites, scan unexpected files, and check the license or permission attached to each recording. For a simple, legitimate PC music workflow, start with the source’s own download, use JDownloader 2 or FDM to manage direct files, and reserve yt-dlp for cases where command-line control is genuinely useful.

Is yt-dlp a music app?
No. yt-dlp is a command-line audio and video downloader that supports thousands of sites. It does not provide a conventional music catalogue or point-and-click music library.
Can yt-dlp convert a video to MP3 without FFmpeg?

Best for advanced users: yt-dlp, provided you install FFmpeg and understand its command-line model. Best for ordinary direct links: Free Download Manager. None of them is a legal substitute for a music subscription or a licence to download recordings; start with an authorized source such as an artist’s download page or Bandcamp.
