Google Drive is the best general-purpose free choice when you want the largest documented allowance and easy sharing. If several people must edit documents together in a browser while staying close to the LibreOffice ecosystem, use Nextcloud or ownCloud with Collabora Online. OneDrive suits Microsoft-centered households, while Dropbox is a simple synchronization and sharing layer. The right choice depends on whether you need storage, desktop access, browser co-authoring, privacy, or administrative control.

Cloud storage and LibreOffice collaboration are related but separate functions. A storage service can synchronize files without providing simultaneous browser editing, while a browser editor may require a separate integration and a capable server. Understand the four layers before choosing
LibreOffice desktop editing
LibreOffice Writer, Calc and Impress are desktop applications. They open local files directly and can also work with files exposed through a remote-file dialog or a synchronized folder. The application itself does not turn every cloud account into a real-time, browser-based office.

A provider client mirrors a cloud folder on your computer. LibreOffice edits the local copy, and the client uploads changes afterward. This is convenient and works well for one person, but two people changing the same file can create conflicting copies or overwrite one another.

Remote Files and WebDAV
LibreOffice’s Remote Files feature can connect to supported services without first keeping a complete local folder. WebDAV is a common protocol for private-cloud platforms. Labels and available providers vary by LibreOffice version, so use the service list shown in your installation rather than assuming every provider appears.
Browser co-authoring
Simultaneous editing requires an office engine running in the browser. Google Docs, Microsoft web editors, Collabora Online and ONLYOFFICE are separate products from the LibreOffice desktop application. Their handling of styles, fields, macros, spreadsheets and presentations can differ. Keep a format-fidelity test document before adopting a browser workflow for important files.
Best mainstream choices
Google Drive: the capacity leader for a general free account
Google states that a Google Account includes up to 15 GB of cloud storage at no charge. The allowance is pooled across Drive, Gmail and Google Photos, so email and photo usage reduce the space available for LibreOffice documents. It is not a dedicated office-file quota.

Those editors are useful when collaborators are comfortable with Google’s formats, but they are not the LibreOffice desktop interface. A document that travels repeatedly between ODT or other LibreOffice formats and a browser editor should be inspected for layout, formulas, tracked changes and embedded objects after each conversion.

Set up a Google Drive workflow
- Create or use a Google Account and decide whether you will use a synchronized desktop folder or LibreOffice’s remote-file connection.
- In LibreOffice, open File and choose Open Remote (the exact wording can vary by version). Select Google Drive if it is listed, then complete the sign-in and authorization screens.
- If Google Drive is not listed, install the official desktop synchronization client for your operating system, wait for the folder to finish syncing, and open that local folder from LibreOffice.
- Save a test ODT, close it, and confirm that the cloud copy appears before moving active work into the folder.
- For browser collaboration, share a copy with the required permissions and agree which application is the authoritative editor. Do not have one person editing the desktop ODT while another edits a converted browser copy.
OneDrive: practical for Microsoft-centered devices
Microsoft documents 5 GB of free OneDrive storage. Microsoft describes OneDrive as designed for individual use with occasional sharing and recommends a team site for regular team collaboration. That distinction matters: a personal folder can synchronize LibreOffice files, but it is not automatically a managed team workspace.
On Windows, the normal approach is to place the document in the OneDrive folder and let the client synchronize it. On Linux or macOS, confirm that Microsoft’s current client or a supported third-party method covers your edition before promising identical behavior. Browser-based Microsoft editors are separate from LibreOffice, so test documents containing complex styles, pivot tables, macros or presentation effects.
Dropbox: the simplest sharing layer
Dropbox Basic starts with 2 GB of storage. Its strength for LibreOffice users is a familiar synchronized folder and easy file-sharing workflow rather than a LibreOffice-native co-authoring editor. It is a reasonable choice when files are modest in size and recipients need dependable links across operating systems.

Before putting important work there, check the account’s current version-history, deleted-file recovery and sharing-permission limits. Those policies can vary by plan. For simultaneous editing, use a separate browser office integration or establish a one-editor-at-a-time rule.

Private-cloud collaboration with LibreOffice-family tools
Nextcloud plus Collabora Online
Nextcloud’s administration manual identifies Collabora Online as an office solution for collaborative document editing and describes two supported office options. Enterprise users can obtain Collabora Online Enterprise through a support subscription. This combination is the closest documented route to editing LibreOffice-family documents together in a browser.
Nextcloud is a platform, not a universally free hosted drive. You need a hosted instance or your own server, storage, updates, backups and an administrator. The host also needs enough CPU, memory and network capacity for the number of simultaneous editors. Ask the host whether Collabora is already installed, which file formats are supported, how versions are retained and how data is backed up.
ownCloud plus Collabora or another editor
ownCloud documentation lists integrations for Collabora Online, ONLYOFFICE and Microsoft Office Online, along with WebDAV and APIs. Its Collabora integration allows users to create, access, edit and co-author documents inside ownCloud.
The same deployment cautions apply: ownCloud does not imply a particular free quota or a ready-made hosted service. Confirm the office connector, authentication method, storage location, upgrade responsibility and restore process with the administrator. If the instance offers several editors, run the same sample document through each one before choosing a default.

Where ONLYOFFICE fits
ONLYOFFICE documents connectors for Dropbox, Google Cloud Storage, kDrive, Nextcloud, OneDrive and ownCloud. It can provide browser editing against an existing storage account, which is useful when a team wants one editor in front of several repositories.
Do not treat an ONLYOFFICE connector as proof of identical LibreOffice behavior. Compare style handling, spreadsheet formulas, presentation transitions, comments, tracked changes and macro requirements using copies of your real files. The connector, storage provider and editor each have their own permissions and recovery settings.
Storage alternatives when capacity or privacy is the priority
Proton Drive
Proton lists a 5 GB Proton Free tier. It belongs on a storage shortlist when privacy characteristics matter more than the largest allowance. Confirm whether your operating system has a suitable synchronization client, whether WebDAV is available, and whether the service provides any browser editor before moving a collaborative project.
pCloud
pCloud advertises up to 10 GB free on its current product page. Treat “up to” as the product’s stated maximum rather than a guaranteed dedicated office quota. Verify how the allowance is earned or allocated, then check desktop synchronization, WebDAV and sharing controls for your region and platform.

Koofr
Koofr advertises 10 GB of additional free space and documents connections to Dropbox, OneDrive and Google Drive. That multi-cloud view can reduce the need to migrate existing files. Confirm whether your intended account supports the protocol you need and test opening, saving and restoring an ODT before relying on it for daily work.

Method 1: work in a synchronized folder
- Install the provider’s desktop client and sign in with the account that owns the files.
- Choose a local sync location with enough disk space and mark the project folder for offline availability if that option exists.
- Open the file from that folder in LibreOffice. Wait for the client to report that uploads and downloads are complete before shutting down or switching devices.
- Use clear filenames and a project subfolder rather than placing active work at the root of the drive.
- When another person needs to edit, either hand off ownership explicitly or use a browser editor designed for co-authoring.
Method 2: use LibreOffice Remote Files
- Choose File > Open Remote in LibreOffice.
- Select the provider or protocol supported by your version, enter the endpoint and credentials, and complete any authentication prompt.
- Open a disposable test document first. Save it, close it, and reopen it to confirm that the remote service accepted the change.
- Use Save or Save As within the remote location instead of silently creating a local copy.
- Close the document when finished so the service can release locks and other users can see the final version.
Method 3: connect a private cloud through WebDAV
- Obtain the exact WebDAV URL and an app password or token from the Nextcloud, ownCloud or hosting administrator.
- Add the WebDAV connection through LibreOffice’s remote-file dialog or your operating system’s network-location tool.
- Test read, write, rename and delete permissions with a temporary folder.
- Enable two-factor authentication on the cloud account where available and avoid embedding a primary account password in scripts or shared documents.
- Document the administrator’s backup and restore procedure before storing the only copy of a project on the server.
Co-authoring, file formats and conflict prevention
Choose one authoritative editing path
For a shared project, decide whether the master is an ODT edited in desktop LibreOffice, a browser document managed by Collabora or ONLYOFFICE, or a document maintained in another office suite. Moving the same file between several editors without a rule makes it difficult to identify the current version.
Expect format differences
LibreOffice’s native OpenDocument formats preserve the suite’s feature set best. Microsoft Office formats and browser-suite formats may be necessary for colleagues, but round trips can change pagination, fonts, formulas, comments, fields and presentation effects. Keep the original master, export a PDF for fixed-layout review, and compare the reopened file after any conversion.
Prevent sync conflicts
- Do not open the same synchronized file on two devices while one device is offline.
- Wait for sync completion before renaming, moving or deleting a file.
- Keep temporary lock files and conflict copies until the owner verifies the final document.
- Use separate filenames for major milestones, such as
budget-2026-03-01.odt, instead of relying only on an application’s last-saved state. - For true simultaneous editing, use a supported browser editor rather than attempting to synchronize a file while two desktop applications have it open.
Privacy, control and platform fit
Hosted commercial storage
Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Proton Drive, pCloud and Koofr remove most server administration. You trade that simplicity for dependence on the provider’s account policies, client support, sharing model and recovery limits. Read the current terms for retention, deleted-file recovery and inactive accounts before treating a free account as an archive.
Self-hosted or managed private cloud
Nextcloud and ownCloud provide more control over where data resides and which office integration is enabled. They also make you or your host responsible for updates, TLS certificates, account recovery, backups, storage expansion and abuse protection. A low-cost server that is rarely patched is not automatically more private or safer.
Device coverage
Check support for Linux, Windows and macOS desktop access, plus Android and iOS applications if your team works from phones or tablets. A service can look ideal in a browser and still be impractical if its synchronization client does not support the operating system used for editing. Confirm offline behavior and re-authentication requirements before deployment.

Backup and recovery checklist
- Keep at least one copy outside the synchronized cloud folder.
- Enable the provider’s available version history or snapshots, then perform a real restore test with a disposable file.
- Export milestone documents to PDF when visual fidelity matters.
- Record who owns the account and how access is recovered if that person leaves.
- Review shared links periodically and remove permissions that are no longer needed.
- For a private cloud, verify that backups are encrypted, tested and stored separately from the server being backed up.
