If you want the closest follow-up to Street Fighter, start with Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. Choose the 1995 live-action Mortal Kombat for a tournament-martial-arts format, or Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge (2020) for animated lore and a more contemporary action approach. Tekken and DOA: Dead or Alive are optional completist picks rather than essential next stops.
There is no single “best” fighting-game movie
“Best” depends on what you want after Street Fighter: more of the same characters and world, a live-action tournament, or an animated film that leans into another game’s mythology. The recommendations below are organized as a decision guide, not an objective ranking. Secondary roundups from Den of Geek and JustWatch provide the comparison pool; they do not establish a universal score or consensus.
Use five questions when deciding: how closely the film follows the game, whether you want live action or animation, the tone and style of the fights, how much franchise knowledge helps, and whether you want the same franchise or a different one. No shared review metric is available for these titles, so the table and explanations use qualitative descriptions rather than invented ratings.

| If you want… | Watch… | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| More Street Fighter characters and setting | Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie | The most direct franchise-adjacent continuation. |
| A live-action tournament and martial-arts spectacle | Mortal Kombat (1995) | It takes the fighting-game premise into live action and centers a tournament format. |
| Animated Mortal Kombat lore | Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge (2020) | JustWatch describes it as a lore-focused animated adaptation centered on Scorpion, with a contemporary action style. |
| Every major fighting-game adaptation | Tekken and DOA: Dead or Alive | Both appear in broader fighting-game movie roundups; treat them as curiosity or completist choices. |
1. Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie — the closest next watch
Why it is the natural first choice
If your priority is staying inside the Street Fighter universe, this is the clear starting point. It is an animated feature built around the Street Fighter II era rather than a different game’s cast. That makes it the strongest match for a viewer who wants familiar fighters, locations and rivalries instead of a new property.

Capcom’s 2012 annual report records an animated movie titled Street Fighter II in August 1994. The company table does not print the film’s complete title or provide a quality assessment, so the commonly used title Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie should be understood as the film associated with that 1994 entry, not as a claim that the report itself supplies a review. Capcom separately dates the arcade debut of Street Fighter II to 1991 in its official game history at Capcom Town.
What kind of experience to expect
Animation is the reason to choose this over a live-action adaptation. It can present the game’s roster and fighting styles without asking a live-action production to reproduce an arcade presentation literally. The appeal is continuity of world and characters, not a neutral demonstration of every game mechanic. Viewers who mainly want a tournament structure or realistic performers should move to Mortal Kombat instead.
Who should start here
- Fans who want the most direct movie follow-up to Street Fighter.
- Viewers who prefer animation to live action.
- People who already know the game’s cast and want that knowledge to matter.
- Anyone building a franchise-focused double feature rather than sampling unrelated adaptations.
Who should choose something else first
If you are specifically looking for a live-action martial-arts tournament, this is not the format match. If your interest is in the mythology of another fighting-game series, start with one of the Mortal Kombat films below. The recommendation is about proximity to Street Fighter, not a claim that it is objectively superior on every filmmaking measure.

2. Mortal Kombat (1995) — the live-action tournament route
Why it belongs on the list
The 1995 Mortal Kombat film is the choice for viewers who want a live-action fighting-game movie built around tournament martial arts. That distinction matters: you are switching from Street Fighter’s animated, franchise-adjacent option to a different game series and a different production format.

Both the Den of Geek roundup and JustWatch’s fighting-game guide include Mortal Kombat among notable adaptations. Those lists support its place as an editorial recommendation, not a measurable claim that it wins every category or has universal critical approval.
What changes when you move to live action
Live action makes performers, costumes, sets and physical choreography the center of the experience. Choose it when the tactile feel of a tournament is more important to you than staying with Street Fighter characters. The film’s 1995 date also places it in an earlier wave of game adaptations, so it is best approached as a period example of how studios translated arcade combat to the screen.
Prior knowledge and viewing order
You do not need to watch another film before it. A basic awareness that Mortal Kombat is a fighting-game franchise can help you recognize why a tournament structure is central, but the recommendation does not depend on completing a game series first. Watch it immediately after Street Fighter if your next priority is live action; otherwise, save it for a double feature with Scorpion’s Revenge to compare two approaches to the same property.

3. Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge (2020) — animated lore with a modern action emphasis
Why it is a different kind of follow-up
Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge keeps the franchise change but returns to animation. JustWatch presents it as a lore-focused animated adaptation centered on Scorpion, and describes its action style as contemporary. That makes it the best fit here for someone who wants animated storytelling but is ready to leave Street Fighter’s roster behind.

The film is not included as a substitute for Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. The two solve different problems: one preserves the Street Fighter setting, while the other offers a concentrated look at a Mortal Kombat character and mythology.
When to pick it over the 1995 film
- Choose Scorpion’s Revenge if animation is your preferred format.
- Choose it if character lore matters more than seeing a live-action tournament.
- Choose it if you want a newer-feeling action presentation than a 1990s adaptation provides.
- Choose it for a same-franchise comparison after watching the 1995 film.
How much game knowledge helps
Existing familiarity with Mortal Kombat can make its lore references easier to place, but the available descriptions do not establish a formal prerequisite or a universal accessibility score. Treat prior knowledge as a bonus rather than a requirement, and use the film’s Scorpion-centered premise as your deciding factor.
How the main three choices compare
| Film | Year | Format | Franchise relationship | Best for | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie | 1994 context in Capcom’s annual report | Animated | Closest match to Street Fighter; Capcom’s report lists an animated movie titled Street Fighter II. | More Street Fighter characters and world. | The report does not provide a review, complete title, audience score or performance statistic. |
| Mortal Kombat | 1995 | Live action | Separate fighting-game franchise. | Tournament martial arts in live action. | The supplied editorial roundups do not establish a shared quality ranking or current availability. |
| Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge | 2020 | Animated | Separate fighting-game franchise, focused on Scorpion’s lore. | Animated mythology and contemporary action. | There is no verified common scoring rubric comparing it with the other films. |
4. Tekken and DOA: Dead or Alive — optional completist picks
Broader fighting-game movie lists also include live-action Tekken and DOA: Dead or Alive. Den of Geek’s roundup is the relevant source for their inclusion. The available material does not support detailed plot summaries, reception claims or a case that either should outrank the three core recommendations.
When they make sense
- You are cataloguing major game-to-film adaptations rather than seeking the closest match to Street Fighter.
- You want to compare how different properties handled live-action casting, costumes and fight scenes.
- You have already watched the more direct choices and are curious about the edges of the genre.
How to approach them
Approach both as optional experiments. Do not select them expecting the same franchise continuity as Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, or the same Scorpion-centered lore focus as Scorpion’s Revenge. Their value in this guide is breadth: they show how the fighting-game adaptation category extends beyond the best-known series.

Ready-made watch plans
The closest-franchise plan
- Watch Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie first.
- Stop there if your goal was simply more Street Fighter.
- Add Mortal Kombat (1995) only if you want to see the same broad game-to-film idea in live action.
The format-comparison double feature
- Watch Mortal Kombat (1995) for the live-action tournament approach.
- Follow it with Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge for animated lore and a newer action presentation.
- Compare format, tone and fight presentation rather than declaring one universally better.
The animation-first plan
- Start with Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie.
- Continue with Scorpion’s Revenge if you want another animated fighting-game adaptation.
- Use Mortal Kombat (1995) as an optional live-action contrast.
The completist plan
- Begin with the Street Fighter film for franchise continuity.
- Watch both Mortal Kombat films to compare live action with animation within one property.
- Finish with Tekken and DOA: Dead or Alive as optional entries from broader genre roundups.
A 30-second decision checklist
- “I want the same characters.” Pick Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie.
- “I want a live-action tournament.” Pick Mortal Kombat (1995).
- “I want animated mythology centered on one character.” Pick Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge.
- “I have finished the obvious choices and want more adaptations.” Try Tekken or DOA: Dead or Alive.
- “I need a measurable number-one film.” No reliable shared score is established by the available sources; choose by format and franchise preference instead.
What is known about the upcoming 2026 Street Fighter movie
Capcom’s official promotion lists a new Street Fighter movie for worldwide release on October 16, 2026, directed by Kitao Sakurai: Capcom’s 2026 Street Fighter movie announcement. As of October 13, 2026, that date is still upcoming, so the film should not be described as available to watch or used as an existing entry in this list.
The announcement is useful for planning a future franchise marathon, not for judging the film. No verified rating, plot evaluation, audience survey or performance result is established here.
Check availability before you plan a marathon
Streaming, rental and physical-media catalogues vary by country and change over time. The sources used for these recommendations do not verify a current service listing for any title in a specific territory. Search the exact film title on the services available to you, and confirm whether a result is a subscription stream, a rental, a purchase or an unavailable listing before starting your watch order.
Release year alone is not an availability guarantee. A 1995 film may appear in a different catalogue from a 2020 animated title, while regional licensing can make either one disappear or return without notice. Check again on the day you plan to watch.

How to read these recommendations
The historical facts are narrow but solid: Capcom’s report supplies the August 1994 animated Street Fighter II entry, and Capcom’s game-history page places the arcade game’s first appearance in 1991. The film choices and descriptive framing come from editorial roundups, not from a verified critic-consensus database, personal viewing report or controlled comparison.
That distinction explains the wording throughout this guide. “Closest continuation,” “live-action tournament” and “animated lore focus” describe what each choice is for; they are not claims that one title wins every artistic category. No named statistics were verified for comparing quality or commercial performance, and figures for unrelated films in Capcom’s annual report should not be treated as evidence for this watchlist.
The practical verdict
Start with Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie when continuity is the priority. Switch to Mortal Kombat (1995) for live-action tournament energy, or to Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge for animated, Scorpion-centered lore and a contemporary action style. Save Tekken and DOA: Dead or Alive for the moment when exploration matters more than finding the closest possible follow-up.
