Start with Hogwarts Legacy if what you want is the Wizarding World itself. It is a single-player, open-world action RPG set at Hogwarts in the 1800s, with locations including the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade. If you want the broader feelings behind Harry Potter—learning magic, exploring a fantasy world, building relationships, or making consequential choices—three very different RPGs are stronger matches: Skyrim Special Edition, Baldur’s Gate 3, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

None of these alternatives continues Harry’s story or recreates Hogwarts. The useful question is which part of the experience you want more of: familiar Wizarding World atmosphere, unrestricted fantasy exploration, companion-driven role-playing, or mature monster-hunting adventure.

Quick answer: which game fits the Harry Potter experience you miss?

Game Best match for World and tone Core structure Important content note
Hogwarts Legacy The setting, school atmosphere, spells and Wizarding World lore Hogwarts and surrounding Wizarding World locations in the 1800s Single-player, open-world action RPG A separate pre-Harry adventure rather than a continuation of the novels
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition Freedom to explore, customize a character and shape a fantasy adventure Expansive epic fantasy with magic and dragons Open-ended RPG with additional Creations Steam lists blood and gore, intense violence, sexual themes, alcohol use and language
Baldur’s Gate 3 Companions, relationships, tactical battles and choices that alter the story Story-rich Dungeons & Dragons fantasy in the Forgotten Realms Party-based RPG with turn-based combat and online co-op Steam lists sexual content, nudity and violence
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Large-scale quests, monster lore and a darker fantasy journey War-torn, monster-infested continent Single-player, open-world RPG Steam lists strong language, intense violence, blood and gore, nudity and sexual material

This is an editorial match based on documented features, not a claim that the games are interchangeable. A school-centered magical adventure and a mature monster-hunting RPG can both appeal to a Harry Potter fan for completely different reasons.

What “like Harry Potter” can mean

Readers asking for similar games are often asking for one of two things. The first is a literal setting match: a school of magic, recognizable Wizarding World places and the pleasure of inhabiting that universe. The second is a feature match: casting abilities, exploration, quests, character progression, companions and role-playing decisions, even when the world and tone are unrelated.

Hogwarts Legacy is the only recommendation here that directly supplies the first kind of match. The other three address the second. Thinking in those terms prevents a common disappointment: choosing an excellent fantasy RPG and expecting it to deliver Hogwarts, or choosing a Wizarding World game when what you really wanted was deep party relationships and branching decisions.

Hogwarts Legacy: the closest world match

Hogwarts Legacy is described by Wizarding World as an immersive, open-world RPG set at Hogwarts in the 1800s. The announcement specifically identifies the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade as explorable locations, giving the game a recognizable geographic connection to the books and films while moving the timeline far earlier.

Its official FAQ calls it a single-player, open-world action role-playing game set in the 1800s Wizarding World. That combination matters. You are getting an action-focused solo adventure rather than a multiplayer school simulator, and the historical setting means the plot is a separate story before Harry Potter’s era. Familiar places and lore provide the strongest connection; the narrative is not a retelling of Harry’s years at school.

Choose it when the setting is non-negotiable

  • You want to walk through Hogwarts and travel to named Wizarding World locations.
  • You prefer real-time action-RPG play to turn-based battles.
  • You want a self-contained single-player adventure rather than an online party game.
  • You are happy with a new protagonist and an earlier period of Wizarding World history.

Set expectations before you start

The most important distinction is “world match” versus “story continuation.” The 1800s setting deliberately places the adventure before Harry Potter, so familiar names and places should be understood as setting context rather than evidence that the original characters’ storyline continues. If that is exactly what you want—a new student-era adventure in the same universe—it is the obvious first choice. If you mainly want extensive companion interaction or a tabletop-style decision system, one of the alternatives below may fit better.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition: the broad fantasy sandbox

Steam describes Skyrim Special Edition as an epic fantasy RPG with magic, dragons and character customization. The edition includes the acclaimed game and add-ons, and it supports Creations that can add quests, environments, characters, dialogue, armor and weapons.

That breadth makes Skyrim a good answer for the reader who has finished a school adventure and wants a much larger fantasy playground. You are not attending Hogwarts, and the game does not use the school-story premise. Instead, the appeal is the ability to develop a character and decide what kind of fantasy journey to pursue in a world built around exploration and optional content.

Why it works for fans of magical exploration

Harry Potter often makes magic feel like a gateway to discovery: a spell opens a route, a lesson suggests a new possibility, and the wider world keeps revealing places to investigate. Skyrim’s documented strengths are different but complementary. Magic is one part of an epic fantasy setting that also includes dragons, and character customization lets you approach the adventure through your own build rather than a fixed hero.

Creations extend that flexibility beyond the included game and add-ons. Because they can introduce quests, environments, characters, dialogue, armor and weapons, the edition can support a wide range of additional fantasy scenarios. Treat that as a customization advantage, not as a promise of Wizarding World content or a particular quality level for every creation.

Choose Skyrim when freedom matters more than school atmosphere

  • You want an expansive world instead of a focused school setting.
  • You want to customize a character and decide how that character develops.
  • You enjoy magic as one system among many in an epic fantasy adventure.
  • You value optional additions that can expand quests, locations, dialogue and equipment.

Content warning

The Steam listing discloses blood and gore, intense violence, sexual themes, alcohol use and language. That profile is materially different from a family-friendly interpretation of Harry Potter, so check the current store information and your household’s age requirements before buying.

Baldur’s Gate 3: companions, choices and tactical combat

Steam describes Baldur’s Gate 3 as a story-rich, party-based RPG set in Dungeons & Dragons’ Forgotten Realms. Its documented pillars are turn-based combat, character choices, relationships and online co-op. This is the strongest recommendation for someone who remembers Harry Potter’s friendships, rivalries and personal decisions more vividly than the castle itself.

  • In the final chapter of the FINAL FANTASY VII Remake Series, the scale has never been larger, and the stakes have never been higher. Everything leads here.
  • Explore the World on a Planetary Scale - Soar the skies with your airship—the Highwind—and explore a vast, interconnected world. Choose where to drop and skydive down to areas of interest across a wide variety of biomes, cities, and remote frontiers.
  • An Iconic Ensemble, Fully United - Fight alongside a roster of unique companions, including newly playable party members Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine. Each character brings distinct combat roles and abilities to the fray, greatly expanding your strategic options.
  • Refined Action and Strategy - Experience the series’ iconic hybrid of real time action and command based combat in its most polished form yet. Seamlessly switch between party members, issue commands in Tactical Mode, and unleash powerful abilities and synergies to overcome colossal threats.

The structural difference is significant. Rather than controlling a lone student in an action RPG, you manage a party and make decisions within a role-playing framework. Battles are turn-based, giving you time to consider actions, while relationships and choices make the social side of the adventure a central system rather than background flavor.

What makes it a good “more companions” choice

  • Party-based play puts companions at the center of the adventure.
  • Relationships give character interactions mechanical and narrative importance.
  • Turn-based combat rewards planning rather than reflexes.
  • Character choices provide role-playing agency beyond selecting cosmetic details.
  • Online co-op allows the campaign to be experienced with other players.

Those strengths make it a feature match, not a setting match. The Forgotten Realms is Dungeons & Dragons fantasy, so there is no Hogwarts curriculum or Wizarding World continuity. Pick it when your ideal follow-up to Harry Potter is “a group of memorable characters making difficult choices together,” not “another story at a magical school.”

Content warning

Steam identifies mature content including sexual content, nudity and violence. Readers seeking a lighter or younger-audience fantasy game should treat that disclosure as a deciding factor, not an afterthought.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: open-world monster hunting

Steam presents The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as a single-player, open-world RPG in which Geralt is a mercenary monster slayer exploring a war-torn, monster-infested continent while tracking Ciri. The Complete Edition includes the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions.

This is the recommendation for readers who want the investigative and folkloric side of fantasy: travel through a large world, take on quests and learn about monsters through the perspective of an established professional. Geralt is not a blank-slate student, so the role-playing emphasis differs from both a customizable wizard and a party of player-created characters. The appeal is inhabiting a defined monster hunter in a mature world with a substantial quest framework.

Choose it when the fantasy should be darker

  • You want monster lore and contracts rather than school lessons.
  • You prefer an established protagonist with a specific profession and history.
  • You want a large, quest-driven world shaped by war and dangerous creatures.
  • You want the Complete Edition’s two named expansions included in one package.

Content warning

The Steam listing discloses strong language, intense violence, blood and gore, nudity and sexual material. It is therefore a much more mature option than a school-centered magical adventure, even though both belong to the broad fantasy RPG category.

How to choose by the feature you want most

If you want recognizable Wizarding World places

Choose Hogwarts Legacy. It is the only game in this list officially described as being set in the Wizarding World and at Hogwarts. Its 1800s timeline gives you a new story rather than Harry’s, but it supplies the closest setting connection by a wide margin.

If you want maximum freedom to shape a fantasy character

Choose Skyrim Special Edition. Its documented combination of character customization, magic, dragons and optional Creations is aimed at breadth. You decide what kind of fantasy adventure to pursue instead of following a school-year structure.

If you want friends, relationships and decisions to drive the campaign

Choose Baldur’s Gate 3. Its party-based design, relationships, turn-based combat, character choices and online co-op directly address the social and role-playing dimensions many readers associate with Harry Potter’s central group of characters.

Combat and role-playing differences at a glance

The games do not use the same moment-to-moment rhythm. Hogwarts Legacy is identified by its official FAQ as an action RPG, while Baldur’s Gate 3 is explicitly turn-based. Skyrim and The Witcher 3 are both presented as open-ended fantasy RPGs, but their documented selling points emphasize different forms of agency: Skyrim emphasizes customization and world flexibility; The Witcher 3 emphasizes Geralt’s monster-hunting role and open-world questing.

Question Best fit Reason
Do you want real-time action in the Wizarding World? Hogwarts Legacy Its official FAQ identifies it as a single-player open-world action RPG set in the 1800s Wizarding World.
Do you want time to plan every battle? Baldur’s Gate 3 Steam explicitly describes its combat as turn-based.
Do you want to define your own fantasy identity? Skyrim Special Edition Steam highlights character customization and a broad fantasy world.
Do you want to play a defined professional monster hunter? The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Steam centers the game on Geralt, a mercenary monster slayer.

Age, tone and content: do not assume fantasy means family-friendly

The familiar magic-school image can make every fantasy RPG look suitable for the same audience. The store disclosures show otherwise. Skyrim Special Edition lists blood and gore, intense violence, sexual themes, alcohol use and language. Baldur’s Gate 3 lists sexual content, nudity and violence. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt lists strong language, intense violence, blood and gore, nudity and sexual material. These are not interchangeable warnings; review the current store page for the edition and platform you plan to purchase.

Hogwarts Legacy is the setting match for readers looking for a more school-centered magical adventure, but “closest to Harry Potter” does not automatically answer every family’s suitability question. Confirm the current regional rating and content information before letting a younger player start any title.

Buying and availability checks

The cited store pages establish the games’ identities and feature descriptions, but they do not establish current prices, physical-edition stock, regional availability or compatibility with every console and PC configuration. Before purchasing, check the listing for your exact platform and region.

  1. Confirm the platform version you need; a store page for one platform does not guarantee that every edition is available elsewhere.
  2. Read the current regional age rating and content disclosure, especially for Skyrim, Baldur’s Gate 3 and The Witcher 3.
  3. For Skyrim Special Edition, verify which add-ons and Creations support your platform and account.
  4. For The Witcher 3, check that the product is the Complete Edition if you specifically want Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.
  5. Check whether a physical copy is actually offered in your region; availability can differ by platform and retailer.

A practical play order

If you have not played any of these games, begin with Hogwarts Legacy when your priority is the Wizarding World. Move to Skyrim Special Edition when you want a looser, larger fantasy sandbox. Select Baldur’s Gate 3 instead when companions and consequential choices are the main attraction. Save The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for when you are ready for the most explicitly mature, monster-focused tone in this group.

There is no universal “best” substitute for Harry Potter because the four games answer different requests. The best choice is the one whose setting, structure, combat and content profile line up with the part of the original experience you want to continue.
