For most buyers, the HyperMegaTech Super Pocket is the best Evercade Nexus alternative: it is the least expensive way to enter the Evercade cartridge ecosystem, fits in a pocket and includes a built-in publisher collection. Choose the Retroid Pocket 5 if you value Android emulation and expandable storage more than physical Evercade games. Choose Analogue Pocket if you already own original Game Boy-family cartridges and want FPGA hardware recreation.

The Nexus remains the better choice when you want a large screen, two analogue sticks and Evercade features such as Wi-Fi 6 and EverSync. It is listed for release on 30 October 2026 at £169.99/$199.99/€199.99, so its price and availability should be checked again when it reaches retailers.

What the Nexus offers—and why you might choose something else

Evercade Info Central lists the Nexus as an Evercade-focused handheld arriving on 30 October 2026. Its 5.89-inch IPS panel runs at 840×512, making it substantially larger than the Super Pocket and Analogue Pocket displays. Two analogue sticks make it suitable for games that use dual-stick or 3D controls, while the 5,000mAh battery is rated for more than five hours. Wi-Fi 6 and EverSync are intended for local multiplayer and synchronisation features. A Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack cartridge is included.

There is no HDMI output on the Nexus. If connecting a handheld to a television is essential, do not assume this model can replace a dockable console; the published specification explicitly omits HDMI.

The appeal is the physical Evercade library. The platform is described as having more than 80 collections and over 750 games, with cartridges starting at £24.99/$29.99/€29.99. Those totals and prices can change as new collections and regional retail pricing appear, so treat them as a snapshot rather than a permanent catalogue.

An alternative therefore involves a real compromise: lower price and portability, broader Android software, or compatibility with cartridges from another ecosystem. The right choice depends more on the games you intend to own than on processor marketing.

1. HyperMegaTech Super Pocket: best budget and pocketable alternative

The Super Pocket is the closest substitute for the Evercade experience because it accepts Evercade cartridges while costing a fraction of the Nexus listing. It also includes a fixed publisher collection, so a new owner can play immediately without buying a cartridge.

Choose the edition by its built-in games

Edition Built-in games Listed launch price
Taito 18 £49.99/$59.99/€59.99
Capcom 12 £49.99/$59.99/€59.99
Atari 50 £49.99/$59.99/€59.99
Technōs 15 £49.99/$59.99/€59.99
Neo Geo 14 £49.99/$59.99/€59.99
Data East 18 £49.99/$59.99/€59.99

The listed launch price applies to most editions; confirm the exact regional price for the edition you want. A Taito unit and an Atari unit are not equivalent purchases because their built-in catalogues are different.

Hardware strengths

  • The 165g body is genuinely pocketable and easier to carry than a large-screen handheld.
  • The 2.8-inch 320×240 display suits the original low-resolution games and keeps the device small.
  • Physical Evercade cartridges let you expand the library without installing an operating system or managing game files.
  • Controls are regarded positively for this class of device, and the built-in games make it suitable as a gift or first retro handheld.

Trade-offs

  • There are no analogue sticks, so games designed around dual-stick or analogue movement are a poor fit.
  • There is no Wi-Fi, which rules out Nexus-style EverSync features and online connectivity.
  • About four hours of battery life is shorter than the Nexus rating and the Analogue Pocket range.
  • The 2.8-inch screen can feel cramped during long sessions, especially for players accustomed to modern phones or the Nexus panel.

Buy a Super Pocket when price, portability and a physical cartridge collection matter most. It is also the safest recommendation for children and casual players who want a simple device with no Android configuration. It is less suitable as a primary handheld for long sessions or for games that need analogue sticks.

2. Retroid Pocket 5: best for broad Android emulation

The Retroid Pocket 5 is not an Evercade replacement in the cartridge sense. It is an Android handheld for owners who want a wide range of apps and emulators, expandable storage and more control over how software is installed.

Published specification

  • Android 13 operating system.
  • 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display.
  • Snapdragon-class CPU/GPU specification.
  • 12GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS storage.
  • TF card slot for additional storage.
  • 5,000mAh battery.
  • Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1.
  • Hall-effect analogue sticks designed to resist the wear associated with conventional potentiometers.
  • Listed price: $179.

Why it can be better than Nexus

Android gives the Pocket 5 a much broader software model. You can add compatible applications, move a library to the TF card and adjust emulator settings rather than being limited to one cartridge format. The 1080p AMOLED screen is sharper than the Nexus resolution on paper, and the analogue sticks suit 3D systems better than a stick-less Super Pocket.

  • Convenient Rechargeable and Long - lasting Battery: The video game console is equipped with an 860mAh lithium - ion battery. It ensures that kids can play games without interruption, because there is no need for frequent battery replacement, which is very suitable for playing portable games outdoors. It is a great addition to the world of handheld games for children and can bring more fun to them.
  • Absolutely Surprising Gift: Our handheld game toy is a surprising gift for kids, teenagers, and even adults. It is the best gift for birthdays, Christmas, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. Customer satisfaction is our top priority. Our customer support team will serve you wholeheartedly.

That flexibility is useful for technically confident owners who already understand Android storage, controller mapping and emulator configuration. It also lets the handheld serve purposes beyond retro gaming, although the exact applications and performance depend on the software you install.

What you give up

  • There is no Evercade cartridge slot, so an existing Evercade collection cannot be inserted.
  • Setup takes longer: Android updates, account configuration, storage organisation, emulator installation and controller mapping are owner tasks.
  • Game legality depends on owning the relevant games and creating or obtaining files lawfully in your region. The device itself does not grant rights to commercial game software.
  • The published specification identifies a Snapdragon-class platform but does not provide a single processor model in the supplied details, so avoid assuming a particular emulator’s performance without testing that title on the current firmware.

Practical setup sequence

  1. Charge the handheld, start Android setup and install available system updates.
  2. Connect to a trusted Wi-Fi network and sign in only to accounts you intend to use on the device.
  3. Insert and format a compatible TF card if you need more than the built-in 128GB; keep a backup of its contents before changing formats.
  4. Install emulators and front-end software from legitimate sources, then read each application’s controller and storage permissions.
  5. Copy only game files you are entitled to use, organise them by system and point each emulator to the appropriate folder.
  6. Test one game at a time, mapping the Hall-effect sticks and buttons before importing a large library. This makes it easier to identify a bad file, an incorrect core or an input-mapping problem.

Choose the Pocket 5 when the phrase “retro gaming” means a configurable Android library. Do not choose it simply because its screen and processor figures look stronger than the Nexus; it changes the ownership model from buying curated cartridges to managing software yourself.

3. Analogue Pocket: best for original handheld cartridges

Analogue Pocket is aimed at collectors who already own cartridges from Nintendo’s original handheld families or want hardware-level recreation rather than software emulation. Analogue states that Pocket is compatible with Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges. Optional adapters add support for Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket and Neo Geo Pocket Color, Atari Lynx, and TurboGrafx-16, PC Engine and SuperGrafx cartridges.

FPGA approach and display

Instead of running a conventional emulator on a general-purpose operating system, Pocket uses FPGA hardware to reproduce the behaviour of the supported systems. Analogue describes the display as a first-class 3.5-inch, 615-pixel-per-inch LCD. The published resolution is 1600×1440, giving integer-friendly sharpness for the handheld systems it targets.

The 4,300mAh battery is rated for six to ten hours. Actual runtime varies with brightness, cartridge and settings, so treat that figure as a vendor range rather than a guarantee for every session.

Costs and limitations

  • The listed price is $239.99, making Pocket the most expensive console in this comparison before adapters or cartridges.
  • Adapters are extra purchases and are required for systems outside the built-in Game Boy-family compatibility.
  • The 3.5-inch screen is smaller than the Nexus display, despite its much higher pixel density.
  • Pocket does not accept Evercade cartridges. Owning an Evercade collection does not make it a substitute for a Nexus or Super Pocket.

Analogue Pocket is the right alternative when cartridge authenticity and FPGA fidelity outweigh price and screen size. It is the wrong choice if your library is primarily Evercade or if you want the least expensive way to sample many publishers.

How the choices differ on the decisions that matter

Physical cartridges versus software libraries

Super Pocket and Nexus use the Evercade cartridge ecosystem. You can buy a cartridge, keep it as a physical object and move it between compatible Evercade hardware. The Nexus includes one Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack cartridge; Super Pocket provides a publisher-specific built-in set and accepts cartridges separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Analogue Pocket uses original handheld cartridges and optional system adapters. Retroid Pocket 5 uses Android applications and owner-managed files instead of either cartridge family. Decide which collection you want to build before comparing screens or batteries.

Analogue controls and game types

Nexus and Pocket 5 include dual analogue sticks, making them the obvious choices for 3D games or systems that expect analogue movement. Super Pocket has no sticks. Analogue Pocket is designed around the button layouts and directional controls of the handheld cartridges it supports rather than the dual-stick layout of the Nexus.

Screen size and aspect ratio

Nexus offers the largest panel at 5.89 inches, with 840×512 resolution. Pocket 5 provides a 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display. Analogue Pocket’s 3.5-inch 1600×1440 LCD prioritises pixel density and integer scaling, while Super Pocket’s 2.8-inch 320×240 panel keeps the device small and matches many older games’ native proportions.

A larger screen is not automatically more authentic: Pocket’s dense square-ish display is designed for handheld-era image quality, whereas Nexus is better for viewing comfort and modern layouts.

Battery, portability and comfort

Super Pocket weighs 165g and is the easiest to carry. Its approximately four-hour rating is the shortest stated runtime. Nexus uses a 5,000mAh battery rated for more than five hours; Pocket 5 also lists 5,000mAh; Analogue Pocket lists 4,300mAh and six to ten hours. Battery capacity alone does not predict runtime because display technology, brightness and software load differ.

Wireless features and television use

Nexus and Pocket 5 list Wi-Fi 6. Nexus uses that connectivity for features including EverSync local multiplayer. Super Pocket has no Wi-Fi. Bluetooth 5.1 is listed for Pocket 5. HDMI output is explicitly absent from Nexus; television-output support is not stated in the published specifications used for Super Pocket, Pocket 5 or Analogue Pocket here, so verify the exact model and accessories before buying for a TV setup.

Ownership cost: compare the ecosystem, not only the console

The console price is only the first purchase. Evercade cartridges are listed from £24.99/$29.99/€29.99, and a Nexus owner may also want a case, screen protector and USB-C charger. A Super Pocket owner may buy cartridges to supplement the built-in publisher set. Analogue Pocket owners need adapters for systems outside Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance, plus the original cartridges. Pocket 5 owners may need a TF card and must budget time for software setup rather than cartridge purchases.

If your priority is… Start with… Why Main compromise
Lowest entry price into Evercade Super Pocket Listed at £49.99/$59.99/€59.99 for most editions and includes built-in games Small display, no sticks and no Wi-Fi
Large Evercade screen and dual sticks Nexus 5.89-inch panel, dual analogue sticks, Wi-Fi 6 and EverSync Much higher price and no HDMI output
Android flexibility Retroid Pocket 5 Android 13, 12GB RAM, 128GB UFS plus TF expansion No Evercade cartridges and more setup responsibility
Original handheld cartridge collection Analogue Pocket FPGA compatibility with Game Boy-family cartridges and optional adapters $239.99 before adapters; no Evercade support

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every Super Pocket edition has the same games

It does not. The Taito, Capcom, Atari, Technōs, Neo Geo and Data East editions have different built-in counts and catalogues. Select the publisher first, then compare the regional price and cartridge availability.

Buying Pocket 5 expecting Evercade compatibility

The Pocket 5 has no Evercade slot. If your priority is using an existing physical Evercade collection, choose Super Pocket or wait for Nexus instead of trying to recreate that library in Android.

Comparing battery numbers as if they were test results

All stated runtimes are ratings or ranges: about four hours for Super Pocket, more than five hours for Nexus, six to ten hours for Analogue Pocket and a 5,000mAh capacity for Pocket 5 without a supplied runtime figure. Brightness, wireless use, emulator load and battery age change real-world endurance.

Overlooking accessories

Adapters for Analogue Pocket, storage for Pocket 5, and cases or screen protection for any handheld can materially change the final cost. Add the accessories required for your intended library before deciding that one console is cheaper.

Expecting a television connection from Nexus

Nexus has no HDMI output in its published specification. If a TV is part of your plan, confirm output support on the exact alternative and accessory combination before purchase; the specifications cited here do not establish TV output for the other three models.

Which Evercade alternative should you buy?

Buy Super Pocket if you want the cheapest, simplest and most portable route into Evercade cartridges. Pick the edition whose built-in publisher library you actually want, and accept the small screen and lack of analogue sticks.

Buy Retroid Pocket 5 if you are comfortable configuring Android, managing lawful game files and using a TF card. It is the most flexible software platform here, but it is not an Evercade product and does not preserve a physical Evercade collection.

Buy Analogue Pocket if your shelves already contain Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance or other supported original cartridges and you value FPGA recreation. Include adapter costs before comparing it with the other choices.

Wait for or buy Nexus if you specifically want the Evercade ecosystem with a 5.89-inch screen, two analogue sticks, Wi-Fi 6 and EverSync. Its listed 30 October 2026 release and regional prices should be reconfirmed at checkout, and the absence of HDMI should be treated as a firm limitation.
