There is no developer-verified single “best first skill” in Valor Mortis. The most reliable opening is to increase your survival margin, maintain enough Endurance to complete attack-and-defense sequences, and then specialize around your weapon and timing habits. Treat level-up attributes and Lantern-equipped Ambers as separate decisions: attributes strengthen your baseline, while Ambers can change how combat works.
What to prioritize first
Early fights are primarily a test of timing. A larger health pool gives you more attempts to learn parries, dodges and enemy patterns, while Endurance lets you perform the actions needed to apply that knowledge. Secondary progression guidance recommends Maximum Health first and Maximum Stamina (Endurance) alongside it; this is practical advice, not an official ranking from the developers.
1. Maximum Health: buy a learning margin
Put your first defensive investment into Maximum Health if you are still learning attack timings. More health does not make blocking or dodging optional, but it gives you room to survive a missed read and continue the encounter. That extra margin is especially useful while learning which attacks can be parried and when an animation is too long to safely commit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Endurance: support the complete action cycle
Endurance is spent on attacking, dodging, blocking and sprinting. Blocking reduces incoming damage at an Endurance cost, and a depleted bar can leave you unable to escape the next hit. Raise it enough to perform a normal sequence—such as a dodge, a short attack string and a retreat—without becoming stranded. More Endurance improves your options, but it cannot substitute for recognizing attack timing.
#1 Best Overall
- HARNESS CORRUPTED POWER - Each death is a chance to grow stronger. Master a combat system of parries, dashes, and visceral finishers across a variety of weapons. Channel your power to enhance attacks and unlock new supernatural abilities to inflict upon your enemies.
- SECRETS LITTER THE BATTLEFIELD - Navigate a 19th-century alternate history where the costs of endless war have corrupted the landscape. Use your newfound mobility to outmaneuver the plague-ridden abominations of Napoleon’s Eternal Guard and uncover environmental secrets that may increase your chances of survival.
- UNCOVER A HORRID CONSPIRACY - Witness a compelling story where historical figures and realities intertwine with elements of horror and the supernatural. Explore beyond the dark corners of the world to discover the truth behind the plague and your unholy resurrection.
3. Damage attributes: specialize after the foundation
Once health and Endurance cover your mistakes and normal exchanges, invest in the damage type you actually use. Secondary stat references describe Might as governing health and melee damage, Endurance as tied to maximum Endurance, regeneration and firearm damage, and Sufferance as tied to Transmutation damage and Nephtoglobin tolerance. These descriptions are useful for planning, but they are not a published balance-tier list. Blade-focused players can move toward melee damage; players who frequently exploit weak points can value the firearm-related benefits associated with Endurance; Transmutation users can consider Sufferance.
How the combat loop determines your “best” build
The official launch guidance describes a linked combat loop rather than isolated weapon classes. Blades and parries damage enemy posture. A posture break creates an opening for a heavy attack or powerful finisher. Firearms punish exposed weak points, and a weak-point hit refills Nephtoglobin (also called nephto). Enemy kills often return ammunition, allowing accurate shots to feed further pressure.

- Use melee to create openings: attack and parry to reduce posture, then commit to a heavy attack or finisher after the break.
- Respect commitment: attack animations cannot be canceled into a parry. Start a swing only when you have enough space to finish it.
- Convert defense into recovery: on supported weapons, a clean parry enables a counterattack. A counterattack immediately after blocking restores health lost while blocking.
- Spend bullets deliberately: ammunition is scarce. Aim down sights at glowing weak points, called lambent blisters, and look for explosive barrels carried by some enemies.
- Use firearms for progression as well as damage: glowing red-orange nodes can reveal blocked paths, and weak-point hits return Nephtoglobin.
- Exploit elemental openings: Fire Transmutation sets enemies alight and leaves them open to finishers, but it consumes Nephtoglobin.
Choosing an early Amber
Ambers are equipped at a Lantern, and leveling William increases the number of slots available. The launch guidance does not establish that every named Amber is obtainable in the opening hours or provide a complete unlock order, so treat the following as build directions rather than guaranteed first pickups.
Recommended Free Tools
| Amber | What it changes | Best fit | Trade-off or requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marksman’s Bane | Allows bullet parries; each successful bullet parry grants a Pistol round. | Players who can read ranged attacks and consistently parry them. | Its value depends on reliable ranged timing; missed parries provide no return. |
| Volatile End | A weak-point shot triggers a damaging explosion. | Precise players who already target lambent blisters. | It rewards accuracy and a clear line of sight rather than indiscriminate shooting. |
| Butcher’s Carnage | Melee strikes restore health. | Aggressive melee builds that keep attacking through openings. | Ferrofluid Flasks can no longer heal, so the sustain benefit comes with a permanent healing restriction while equipped. |
Do not assume one Amber or weapon combination solves every boss. If a fight stalls, change the Transmutation, firearm combination or inventory items and return with a different plan.
Spend Catalysts safely at a Lantern
Secondary leveling references state that level-ups use Catalysts at a Lantern and that unspent Catalysts are lost on death until recovered. That makes a Lantern a resource checkpoint, not merely a place to change equipment.
- Reach a Lantern after collecting Catalysts.
- Open the level-up interface and select the attribute that supports your current plan: health for a larger mistake margin, Endurance for more actions, or a damage attribute after your foundation is stable.
- Spend carried Catalysts before attempting a dangerous unexplored route if a Lantern is available.
- After dying, recover the dropped Catalysts before taking another risk; a second death can remove the recovery opportunity.
Demo-derived cost tables found in secondary references should not be treated as current launch prices. The dependable point is the Lantern-and-Catalyst progression loop, not a fixed early-level cost.

Exploration is part of combat progression
Valor Mortis uses metroidvania-like progression. Later abilities can open areas you already visited, and levels may contain combat arenas at different heights, shortcuts, alternate routes, optional rooms, echoes, journal pages and hidden mini-bosses. Revisit earlier spaces after gaining mobility or another traversal ability instead of assuming a blocked route is permanently inaccessible.

Side paths are also a route to build-changing equipment. The official guidance notes that players are unlikely to find every Amber in one playthrough, so explore above and below the obvious route and check newly reachable corners when you return.
Best Value
Match priorities to your combat style
| Your priority | Early emphasis | How to play |
|---|---|---|
| Survive while learning | Maximum Health, then enough Endurance for escapes | Block selectively, counterattack after a block, and avoid long attacks when stamina is low. |
| Blade pressure | Health and Endurance, then melee-oriented damage | Use parries and attacks to break posture, then finish decisively. |
| Firearm precision | Endurance support and an Amber that rewards weak-point accuracy | Save ammunition for lambent blisters and use returned Nephtoglobin to sustain Transmutations. |
| Transmutation control | Health and Endurance before Sufferance-oriented investment | Spend Nephtoglobin when it creates a finisher opening, not merely for incidental damage. |
| Aggressive sustain | Health foundation, then a melee-healing Amber if available | Use restored health from strikes while accepting any stated healing restriction. |
Common early mistakes and fixes
- Trying to parry out of every attack: attacks cannot be canceled into a parry. Stop committing to swings that do not have recovery space.
- Holding block until Endurance is empty: release the guard, reposition and re-enter when your bar can support the next action.
- Firing at armored targets: wait for a glowing weak point, especially when ammunition is limited.
- Spending Nephtoglobin without a purpose: reserve Transmutations for an elemental opening or a finisher setup unless the encounter demands immediate damage.
- Ignoring alternate routes: mark blocked paths and revisit them after unlocking new abilities.
- Assuming a guide’s demo numbers are launch rules: use current in-game costs and descriptions at your Lantern rather than relying on old progression tables.
Bottom line for a first playthrough
Start with Maximum Health, add enough Endurance to complete your preferred attack-and-defense sequence, and only then push the damage attribute that matches your actual play. Learn to break posture with blades and parries, use firearms on exposed weak points to recover Nephtoglobin, and choose Ambers for a specific tradeoff rather than a universal tier list. Exploration, revisiting locked areas and adapting your Transmutation or equipment are as important to mastery as any single level-up.
