Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO is the best overall choice if your priority is seeing and using the widest documented range of Saiyan transformations in battles. Its launch roster had 181 playable characters, a later Bandai Namco corporate release described 182 characters, and its arena fights include forms such as Super Saiyan 2, Ultra Instinct, Broly variants and Gogeta variants.
Choose Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot instead if you want transformations to arrive as part of a story campaign. Choose Dragon Ball XENOVERSE 2 if you want to create a Saiyan avatar and keep expanding it through missions and downloadable content. Choose Dragon Ball FighterZ only when tournament-style 2.5D fighting matters more to you than switching among many forms.

Quick comparison
| Game | Core format | How transformations are used | Documented transformation examples | Best match |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO | 3D arena fighter | Large roster of selectable characters and forms, with battles built around dramatic power changes | Super Saiyan 2, Ultra Instinct, Broly variants and Gogeta variants | The broadest current transformation-focused experience |
| DRAGON BALL Z: KAKAROT | Action RPG story campaign | Transformations are tied to authored story progression and downloadable episodes | Super Saiyan 3, Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Blue) | Players who want a narrative journey through Saiyan milestones |
| DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE 2 | Story missions, avatar play and downloadable content | Your custom Saiyan and the wider cast gain transformation-related options through the long-running content program | Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, Super Saiyan God, Super Saiyan Blue and Super Saiyan 4 characters or forms | Creating and developing a personal Saiyan avatar |
| Dragon Ball FighterZ | 2.5D competitive fighting game | Transformation switching is not the central design; the emphasis is precise team fighting and tournament play | Transformation-focused play is less prominent than in the three games above | Competitive players who value animation, matchups and esports-style combat |
The four games answer different questions. Sparking! ZERO asks which fighter or form you want to bring into a high-impact arena battle. Kakarot asks how transformations fit into Goku’s and the Z warriors’ larger story. Xenoverse 2 asks what kind of Saiyan you want to build. FighterZ asks whether you can outplay another team in a tightly balanced fighting system.
Why Sparking! ZERO is the strongest transformation pick
Bandai Namco Entertainment America announced 181 playable characters at launch on October 8, 2024. A February 4, 2025 corporate release later described a 182-character roster and highlighted battles in which turning Super Saiyan can turn the tide. The two figures refer to different publisher communications, so use 181 as the launch count and 182 as the later corporate description rather than treating them as a contradiction.
#1 Best Overall
- UK PSN Account Requirement: UK PSN account may be required for any online features
- Legendary Budokai Tenkaichi Gameplay: Experience the iconic gameplay of the Budokai Tenkaichi series elevated to new heights with enhanced mechanics and controls
- Extensive Character Roster: Learn and master an incredible roster of playable characters, each with signature abilities, transformations, and techniques
- Authentic Dragon Ball Combat: Harness the destructive power of the strongest fighters ever to appear in DRAGON BALL with faithful recreations of their abilities
- Regional Compatibility: Physical game disc compatible with PlayStation 5 consoles in UK PAL regions
That scale matters because transformation fans usually want more than one version of Goku. They want to see different stages, fusions and rivals represented as distinct combat choices. The documented roster includes Super Saiyan 2, Ultra Instinct, Broly variants and Gogeta variants. The game therefore offers both recognizable forms and the matchup variety that comes from treating those forms as separate playable identities.
How its transformation-focused play feels
Sparking! ZERO is a 3D arena fighter, so transformations belong to an active battle rather than only to a menu or a cutscene. You can select the version of a character that fits your plan, and the game’s battle presentation also supports the dramatic idea of powering up during a fight. Bandai Namco’s own description specifically uses turning Super Saiyan as an example of changing a battle’s momentum.
Its Episode Battle mode adds a story layer without turning the game into a conventional role-playing game. Episodes have branching “What If” paths, allowing alternate outcomes to sit beside the familiar scenes. That combination—large roster, in-fight arena action and branching scenarios—is why this is the best default recommendation for someone who asks for “the most Super Saiyan forms” rather than for a specific campaign.
Who should buy it
- Fans who want the largest documented current roster in this comparison.
- Players who want to choose among forms and versions before a match.
- Groups that prefer spectacular 3D battles over a linear RPG campaign.
- Readers who want alternate story outcomes through Episode Battle’s branching paths.
What it does not replace
Sparking! ZERO is not the best substitute for a full character-building RPG. If your priority is creating one Saiyan, improving that avatar and following a long progression path, Xenoverse 2 is the more direct fit. If you want every transformation to arrive at a particular story beat, Kakarot provides that authored structure more clearly.
Why Kakarot is the best story-led transformation game
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is presented by its official site as an action RPG retelling the Dragon Ball Z story. That format changes the role of a transformation. Instead of starting with a menu full of forms, you move through a campaign in which major power changes are connected to the narrative and to downloadable episodes.
Transformations in the campaign and DLC
The game’s additional content includes Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, commonly called Blue. Official Kakarot news also references Goku’s Super Saiyan 3 transformation. The official site describes a specific Super Saiyan God sequence: train with Whis to awaken the transformation, then test your strength against Beerus in a Boss Battle Episode. That is a useful distinction from an arena roster: the form is presented as a goal inside an episode, not merely as another character icon.
Because Kakarot is an RPG, the surrounding journey matters. Exploration, battles and progression give each new form context. A reader who asks, “Is Kakarot better for the story than Sparking Zero?” should generally choose Kakarot when “better” means a guided retelling with authored milestones. Sparking! ZERO is better when “better” means replayable fights, a large roster and alternate battle outcomes.

Rank #2
- Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero takes the legendary gameplay of the Budokai Tenkaichi series to a whole new level.
- Use the destructive power of the strongest fighters ever competed in Dragon Ball!
- Learn and master an incredible group of playable characters, each with individual skills, transformations and techniques.
Who should buy it
- Players who want to relive the Z storyline rather than assemble a dream roster first.
- Fans who prefer transformations to be introduced by campaign events.
- Anyone interested in Super Saiyan 3, Super Saiyan God and Blue within an action-RPG structure.
- Players who enjoy story DLC that extends the campaign’s transformation arc.
The trade-off
Kakarot is not designed around rapid form comparison in the way an arena fighter is. You should expect progression and episode structure to determine when a transformation becomes available. If your main activity is changing between many forms in head-to-head matches, Sparking! ZERO will feel more immediately focused.
Why Xenoverse 2 is the best custom-Saiyan option
Dragon Ball XENOVERSE 2 is the choice for readers who ask, “Which game lets me create a Saiyan?” Its defining feature in this comparison is avatar play: you build a custom character and take that character through story missions and a long downloadable-content program.
Transformation range
Official pages list transformation-related content involving Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, Super Saiyan God, Super Saiyan Blue and Super Saiyan 4 characters and forms. That list spans several eras of Dragon Ball, which is valuable if you want your avatar experience to sit alongside a broad catalogue of Saiyan power levels.
The important qualification is that Xenoverse 2’s range is distributed across the game’s missions and downloadable content. It is not the same proposition as receiving every documented form in one self-contained story campaign. Check the edition and included add-ons you are buying, because the available content and platform packages can change.
Who should buy it
- Players who want a personal Saiyan instead of only established heroes and villains.
- Fans who expect to keep returning to one avatar over a long period.
- Readers interested in Super Saiyan God, Blue or Super Saiyan 4-related content alongside the earlier Super Saiyan stages.
- Players comfortable with a game whose transformation catalogue has grown through downloadable releases.
The trade-off
Xenoverse 2 offers breadth through customization and continuing content rather than through one headline launch roster. If you want to see a specific form immediately in a cinematic duel, Sparking! ZERO is more direct. If you want a transformation to be tied to a particular dramatic story scene, Kakarot is more structured.
Where FighterZ fits—and where it does not
Bandai Namco classifies Dragon Ball FighterZ as a 2.5D fighting game. Its appeal is competitive combat: carefully constructed teams, precise movement, matchup knowledge and highly animated attacks. Bandai Namco has reported more than 10 million cumulative shipments, showing the scale of its audience, but that success does not make it the best answer to a transformation-collection question.
FighterZ is the right recommendation when the reader’s real priority is tournament-style play. It is the wrong recommendation when the reader specifically wants to switch among a large number of Super Saiyan stages during matches. Its design emphasizes selecting a team and mastering that team’s tools, whereas Sparking! ZERO emphasizes a broad 3D roster and Kakarot emphasizes story progression.

- BREATHTAKING 3D FIGHTS - Engage in heart-pounding, high-speed 3D battles that stay true to the anime and video game series, with breathtaking visuals and authentic combat moves like beam clashes, rush attacks, movements too quick for the eyes to see, and planet-razing ultimate attacks
- THE GROUND WILL SHAKE - Step into an arena that reacts to your every action. As you transform or unleash your most devastating attacks, watch the environment respond with stunning realism. Leave a trail of destruction in your wake as you battle to your heart’s content
Choose FighterZ if
- You want a competitive 2.5D fighter first and a transformation showcase second.
- You enjoy repeated practice, online matchups and learning a team’s exact strengths.
- Animation quality and tournament-oriented combat matter more than avatar creation or RPG exploration.
Choose another game if
Your buying question contains phrases such as “most forms,” “transform during fights,” or “create my own Saiyan.” Those needs point toward Sparking! ZERO, Kakarot or Xenoverse 2 depending on whether you value roster breadth, story or customization.

Can you transform during fights?
The clearest fit for transformation-in-battle spectacle is Sparking! ZERO. Bandai Namco’s corporate description explicitly presents turning Super Saiyan as a way to turn the tide of a battle, and the game’s arena format is built for that kind of momentum shift. Its selectable roster also lets you begin with different established forms, so “transforming” and “choosing a transformed character” both matter to the experience.
Kakarot treats transformation as part of an authored action-RPG progression. You encounter forms through the campaign and its DLC episodes, including the Whis training sequence for Super Saiyan God and the documented Super Saiyan 3 reference. Xenoverse 2 ties its range to avatar and downloadable-content progression. FighterZ is the least suitable choice if changing forms during a match is your deciding feature.
Which game has the most Super Saiyan forms?
There is no single count that measures all four games on identical terms, because they represent forms differently. Sparking! ZERO has the largest documented current roster in the supplied publisher statements—181 at launch and 182 in the later corporate description—and names Super Saiyan 2, Ultra Instinct, Broly variants and Gogeta variants among its forms and characters.
Xenoverse 2 has the broadest documented spread for a custom-avatar game, with official pages covering Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, Super Saiyan God, Super Saiyan Blue and Super Saiyan 4-related characters or forms. Kakarot documents fewer named transformation milestones in this comparison, but it gives those milestones more story context. Therefore:

Best choice for PS5 buyers
Bandai Namco’s official store lists physical editions of both Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot for PS5. Pick the PS5 edition of Sparking! ZERO if your first question is “How many forms and fighters can I use?” Pick the PS5 edition of Kakarot if your first question is “How do I experience the Z story and its transformation milestones?”
Edition names, stock, regional availability and pricing are changeable. Confirm the exact PS5 package, included downloadable content and delivery region immediately before purchase. The same store also lists physical products for FighterZ and Xenoverse 2, with platform offerings varying by product, so verify the individual listing rather than assuming every edition is available on every system.

Purchase decision framework
Pick Sparking! ZERO when three or more of these are true
- You want many established characters and forms in one arena game.
- You want 3D battles rather than a 2.5D competitive format.
- You want the possibility of a transformation changing a fight’s momentum.
- You want branching What If paths in Episode Battle.
- You want to play as forms such as Super Saiyan 2, Ultra Instinct, Broly variants or Gogeta variants.
Pick Kakarot when three or more of these are true
- You want an action RPG that retells Dragon Ball Z.
- You prefer transformations introduced by story progression.
- You want Super Saiyan 3, Super Saiyan God or Blue in a campaign context.
- You enjoy downloadable story episodes connected to those forms.
Pick Xenoverse 2 when three or more of these are true
- You want to create and keep developing a Saiyan avatar.
- You want missions and customization rather than only fixed heroes.
- You are interested in content covering Super Saiyan 2, 3, God, Blue and Super Saiyan 4-related characters or forms.
- You are comfortable checking which downloadable releases are included in your edition.
Pick FighterZ when three or more of these are true
- You care most about competitive 2.5D fighting.
- You want to practice teams and matchups rather than collect transformations.
- You value tournament-style play and highly animated attacks.
- You are willing to accept that transformation switching is not the game’s central feature.
Sales and longevity context
Commercial figures help explain why these games remain visible, but they do not decide which one fits a transformation fan. Bandai Namco reported more than 3 million Sparking! ZERO units sold worldwide in its first 24 hours and more than 5 million units sold worldwide in a later 2025 release. The same corporate reporting cited more than 10 million cumulative shipments for both Xenoverse 2 and FighterZ in 2023. Those figures describe publisher sales or shipments, not a ranking of transformation quality.
For a buyer, the practical implication is that each game has a substantial audience and a distinct identity. Sparking! ZERO is the current roster-and-arena showcase; Kakarot is the story RPG; Xenoverse 2 is the avatar platform with a long DLC runway; FighterZ is the competitive specialist.
Common mistakes when choosing
Confusing a large roster with a story campaign
A roster-heavy fighter can show more forms quickly, but it may not explain when or why a character gained them. If narrative context matters, Kakarot’s authored progression is a better match even though its documented form list is narrower.
Assuming every Xenoverse 2 form is in every edition
The official material identifies transformation-related characters and forms across the game’s content program. Because downloadable packages and platform editions vary, inspect the product description for the exact version you plan to buy.
Buying FighterZ for the wrong reason
FighterZ can be an excellent Dragon Ball fighting game without being a transformation showcase. Choose it for 2.5D competition, not because you expect it to replace Sparking! ZERO’s roster breadth or Xenoverse 2’s avatar customization.
Treating launch and later roster counts as interchangeable
Use 181 for Sparking! ZERO’s launch announcement and 182 for the later corporate description. Keeping the dates attached prevents an inflated or ambiguous claim about what was available on day one.
