The right follow-up to Ultima depends on which part of the series you want to keep: open-ended exploration, a top-down single hero, party-based role-playing, elaborate dialogue, or moral decision-making. Start with Wizardry or Might and Magic for another foundational computer-RPG lineage, Realms of Arkania for a historically suggested companion to Ultima VII, Questron for an early top-down turn-based design, and Exile for party play and dialogue. Keep Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar in mind as the essential reference point if virtues and ethical choices are what you value most.

Choose by the part of Ultima you want more of

“Like Ultima” is not a single mechanical category. The series changes substantially across its eras, so a game that resembles Ultima IV in moral structure may feel nothing like Ultima VII in perspective, party structure, or world interaction. The recommendations below are therefore organized by fit rather than presented as an objective ranking.

Game or series Best fit What the evidence supports Important qualification
Wizardry A neighboring foundational CRPG lineage Identified alongside Ultima as a major classic computer-RPG series; also named as a possible next choice for Ultima VII readers. It is a different lineage, not a promise of the same world simulation or storytelling.
Might and Magic Another major classic CRPG series Presented with Ultima and Wizardry in genre history, and suggested by a historical Ultima VII review. Treat it as a neighboring tradition rather than a one-to-one substitute.
Realms of Arkania trilogy A trail to follow after Ultima VII Explicitly recommended by a classic Ultima VII review. The recommendation is for the trilogy as a companion lead; no entry-by-entry equivalence is established.
Questron Early top-down, turn-based, single-hero play A fan-maintained Ultima-clone taxonomy groups it with that design profile. The taxonomy is a community reference and labels itself a stub, so use this as a lead rather than a definitive critical judgment.
Exile Party play and complex dialogue The same taxonomy groups it with characteristics associated with later, Ultima V-like design. This is a feature-based classification, not a ranking or proof that every system matches Ultima.
Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar Moral and virtue-driven role-playing Its eight virtues make it the clearest touchstone for ethical progression in the series. It is another Ultima game, not an alternative series.

Why the era matters when you want an “Ultima-like” game

Exploration and a reactive world

Some players remember Ultima primarily as a place to investigate: towns, wilderness, dungeons, and systems that reward trying unusual actions. If that is your reference point, do not choose solely by title, age, or the presence of fantasy combat. Ask whether the candidate is being recommended for exploration and world reactivity, or merely because it is an old computer RPG. The available evidence does not establish that Wizardry, Might and Magic, Realms of Arkania, Questron, or Exile reproduces Ultima VII’s exact simulation. They are better understood as neighboring paths into classic role-playing.

Perspective and party size

Perspective changes the rhythm of play. The fan-maintained taxonomy identifies Questron with an early, top-down, turn-based, single-hero pattern. That makes it the most direct lead here for someone who wants the compact viewpoint and personal journey associated with early Ultima. The same taxonomy identifies Exile with party play and complex dialogue associated with later Ultima-like characteristics. If managing several characters and following conversations matters more than playing one avatar, Exile is the more relevant experiment.

Combat and conversation

Turn-based combat is another dividing line, but it should not be treated as a complete definition of “Ultima-like.” A game can share a turn-based structure while differing in party management, exploration, writing, or world rules. Likewise, complex dialogue can point toward later-series interests without guaranteeing the same moral, social, or simulation systems. Use combat and conversation as selection filters, then check the broader fit described for each recommendation.

Virtues and moral play

Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar is the key reference if your favorite feature is role-playing through a code of conduct. A genre history describes its eight virtues as Honesty, Compassion, Valor, Spirituality, Humility, Sacrifice, Justice, and Honor, and notes that the design discouraged indiscriminate looting and killing. None of the non-Ultima recommendations in this list is established by the available sources as an equivalent virtue system. Use Ultima IV to identify what you mean by ethical progression before looking for a substitute.

Wizardry: choose a different foundational lineage

Wizardry is one of the safest first suggestions when “I like Ultima” means “I want another historically important classic computer RPG series.” Genre history treats Wizardry, Ultima, and Might and Magic as major lineages of the form. A historical review of Ultima VII also names Wizardry as a possible next choice.

The reason to pick it is lineage and contrast, not a claim that it recreates Ultima’s world. Go in expecting a different design vocabulary and ask whether you enjoy the kind of structured character-focused challenge that made early computer RPGs distinct. If your priority is a living, highly reactive setting rather than a foundational series with its own identity, the evidence here does not justify promising a direct match.

Who should start with Wizardry?

  • Players who want to explore another canonical classic CRPG tradition.
  • Readers who prefer a historical companion to Ultima rather than a clone.
  • Anyone willing to compare design philosophies instead of looking for identical systems.

What to keep in mind

The recommendation comes from genre history and a period review, not from a current consensus ranking or a claim that every installment is equally suitable. Treat “Wizardry” as a series-level direction; the right entry, edition, and interface may vary, and current availability was not verified here.

Might and Magic: another major classic-RPG route

Might and Magic belongs in the same first tier of suggestions for a reader who wants a different foundational series. The genre history places it alongside Ultima and Wizardry, while the historical Ultima VII review also points readers toward it. That makes it a historically grounded follow-up, even though the sources do not establish a feature-by-feature comparison.

Choose this route when you want to broaden your view of classic computer role-playing. The useful question is not “Does it duplicate Ultima?” but “Do I want to learn how another major series solved exploration, character development, and adventure?” The evidence supports that kind of comparison and does not support promising the same reactive world, dialogue model, or virtue framework.

Best reason to try it

It gives an Ultima fan a second major lineage to place beside the original. That is valuable if your interest is historical design, broad exploration of the genre, or finding a long-running classic series with its own assumptions.

When to choose something else

If your defining requirement is a single hero viewed from above, use the Questron lead instead. If you specifically want party play and complex dialogue, Exile is the better match indicated by the available taxonomy. If virtues are central, return to Ultima IV rather than expecting Might and Magic to stand in for it.

Realms of Arkania: a companion trail for Ultima VII fans

The Realms of Arkania trilogy is included for a specific reason: a classic Ultima VII review explicitly points readers toward it, along with Wizardry and Might and Magic. That makes it a useful historical recommendation for someone finishing Ultima VII and asking what to investigate next.

It is important not to overstate the connection. The review suggests the trilogy as a companion, but the available material does not provide an entry-by-entry comparison of perspective, combat, dialogue, world simulation, or moral systems. Think of it as a trailhead, not a guaranteed substitute. The trilogy label also matters: a reader deciding whether to explore one game or the whole sequence should verify the edition and contents available on the platform they intend to use.

Who is most likely to appreciate this lead?

  • Players whose interest was sparked specifically by Ultima VII, rather than only by early top-down games.
  • Readers who want to follow a period recommendation from classic CRPG criticism.
  • Anyone comfortable discovering similarities gradually instead of expecting a mechanical duplicate.

What is not established

No current platform listing, price, or physical edition for the trilogy was verified in the available material. Do not infer availability from the age of the review or from the fact that the trilogy was once commercially discussed.

Questron: the closest lead for an early single-hero profile

Questron is the focused choice for readers who describe their ideal Ultima as top-down, turn-based, and centered on one hero. Those characteristics come from the fan-maintained Ultima-clone taxonomy, which groups games by traits associated with different eras of the series.

This is a precise use of the recommendation: it matches a design profile, not a claim of equal quality or identical content. If you want to test that profile, pay attention to whether the single-character viewpoint and turn-based structure are enough to make the game feel related for you. If what you actually miss is a large party, long conversations, or the ethical structure of Ultima IV, Questron is answering a different question.

How to decide whether Questron is your kind of follow-up

  1. Identify whether the early top-down viewpoint is the feature you remember most.
  2. Confirm that turn-based pacing is more important to you than a later-style party.
  3. Use the taxonomy’s classification as a starting signal, not as a review score.
  4. Keep expectations narrow: the evidence establishes the profile, not a complete account of its story, interface, or modern availability.

Exile: investigate party play and complex dialogue

Exile addresses a different kind of Ultima nostalgia. The fan-maintained taxonomy groups it with characteristics associated with later, Ultima V-like design, particularly party play and complex dialogue. That makes it the most relevant lead here for a reader who wants to control a group and spend more time with conversations rather than recreating an early single-avatar pattern.

The classification should be read as a guide to what to investigate. It is not a critical ranking, and it does not establish that Exile duplicates the later games’ world reactivity, virtue system, or narrative structure. Start with the party-and-dialogue premise, then judge whether that combination supplies the kind of role-playing you wanted.

Choose Exile when

  • Your favorite Ultima period is the later, party-oriented style.
  • Conversation and character interaction matter as much as combat.
  • You want a feature-based lead rather than another famous series chosen only for historical status.

Do not choose it for the wrong reason

Exile is not presented here as “the best” classic RPG overall, and no current store, price, or platform claim is established. Its value in this list is that it targets a particular combination of party play and dialogue.

Use Ultima IV as your moral-choice benchmark

If your favorite Ultima feature is the way actions express a character’s values, revisit Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar before searching for an outside replacement. The game’s eight virtues—Honesty, Compassion, Valor, Spirituality, Humility, Sacrifice, Justice, and Honor—give the series a distinctive moral vocabulary. The genre history also describes a design that discourages indiscriminate looting and killing.

This makes Ultima IV useful as a benchmark even when your eventual choice is another game. Ask whether you want explicit virtues, consequences for behavior, spiritual progression, or simply a setting in which the protagonist is expected to act responsibly. Those are different needs. The available recommendations are not documented as equivalent implementations, so a game selected for party play or exploration should not be sold as a moral-choice replacement.

A practical decision guide

If your priority is… Start with… Why
Another major classic computer-RPG lineage Wizardry It is identified as a foundational series alongside Ultima and is historically suggested to Ultima VII readers.
A second foundational series with its own identity Might and Magic It occupies the same broad genre-history position and was also named in the historical recommendation.
A period-recommended companion after Ultima VII Realms of Arkania trilogy A classic Ultima VII review specifically points to the trilogy.
Top-down, turn-based, one-hero play Questron The fan taxonomy associates it with that early design profile.
Party play and complex dialogue Exile The taxonomy associates it with later, Ultima V-like characteristics.
Virtues and ethical role-playing Ultima IV Its eight-virtue structure is the clearest touchstone for that preference.

This guide deliberately separates “historically neighboring series” from “mechanically similar lead.” Wizardry and Might and Magic answer the first question. Questron and Exile answer narrower questions about viewpoint, party structure, and dialogue. Realms of Arkania answers a historical follow-up question. Ultima IV remains the reference point for virtue-driven play.

How to approach classic RPGs on a modern computer

Verify the exact edition first

Classic games often appear in multiple releases, bundles, or reissues. Before installing, check the product name, included content, operating-system support, save-game behavior, and whether the listing is a digital license or a physical product. Do not assume that a title mentioned in an older review is still sold in the same form.

Expect interface friction

Older computer RPGs may rely on keyboard commands, text-heavy menus, unusual save conventions, or documentation that modern players no longer receive in the box. Set aside time to learn the controls before judging the underlying design. Keep more than one save and label them by location or decision point so experimentation does not erase progress.

Use compatibility tools only when required

A review of Ultima VII warns, in the context of the system it examined, that playing it required DOSBox or computer knowledge. That is a historical setup observation, not a universal requirement. A current storefront build may include compatibility work, while an old disk image or manually installed release may not. Check the exact edition you own before installing an emulator, and do not generalize the review’s warning to every modern system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate setup problems from design preferences

  • If the game will not launch, investigate the edition’s compatibility instructions before deciding that the game itself is unsuitable.
  • If the interface feels slow, try a short session focused on one system rather than forcing a full campaign immediately.
  • If the game lacks the feature you expected, return to the fit table: a lineage recommendation is not necessarily a mechanical match.

What is currently verified about Ultima availability

EA’s official product page lists Ultima VII: The Complete Edition as a PC RPG available through the EA app. The page describes a digital license, shows a price “starting from $4.99” when accessed, and gives April 16, 1992, as the release date. Price and availability can change, so treat those details as a time-sensitive listing rather than a permanent cost. EA’s catalog also lists multiple other Ultima entries.

Current official listings for Wizardry, Might and Magic, Realms of Arkania, Questron, and Exile were not established here. Their inclusion is therefore a recommendation by fit and history, not a claim that a particular edition is currently sold, supported on a particular platform, or available at a stated price. The same caution applies to physical editions and marketplace stock.

How to set expectations before you start

The strongest way to use this list is to name the feature you are chasing. If you want a new classic lineage, begin with Wizardry or Might and Magic. If you want a historically suggested companion after Ultima VII, investigate Realms of Arkania. If you want the early top-down, turn-based, single-hero profile, Questron is the targeted lead. If you want a party and complex dialogue, try the Exile direction. If you want virtues and ethical progression, use Ultima IV as the benchmark instead of assuming another series will reproduce it.

That approach is more reliable than treating “best” as a universal ranking. Ultima covers several different kinds of role-playing, and each recommendation earns its place by serving a particular one.
