The best cheap VPN of 2026 is Surfshark for most budget buyers: its current U.S. Starter promotion works out to $2.49 per month, but charges $67.23 upfront for 27 months. Private Internet Access is better for privacy-focused torrenting, NordVPN for streaming and speed, PrivadoVPN for the lowest paid price, Proton VPN for free unlimited data, and Mullvad for privacy minimalists.
Cheap VPN pricing is rarely a true month-to-month price. The lowest advertised equivalents usually require paying for 12 to 39 months in advance, and the renewal charge can be substantially higher. The comparison below therefore emphasizes the first-term total, commitment, renewal signal, device limit, refund terms, and practical use case—not the promotional monthly figure alone.
Key takeaways
- Surfshark is the strongest overall budget choice because its observed Starter offer was $67.23 upfront for 27 months, with unlimited simultaneous connections and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
- Private Internet Access is the better bargain for customization and torrenting, with an observed three-year-plus-three-month offer of $79 every three years.
- NordVPN costs more but is the stronger pick for streaming, speed, and a polished interface; its observed Basic offer was $94.23 upfront for 27 months and renews at $139.08 per year.
- PrivadoVPN had the lowest prominent paid equivalent in this comparison at $1.11 per month for two years plus three months, but its smaller infrastructure makes it a less reassuring default.
- Proton VPN Free is the most credible free option because Proton advertises unlimited data and no artificial speed limit, although the free tier has fewer locations and features.
- A VPN changes your network route and masks your public IP address; it does not replace antivirus software, multifactor authentication, software updates, or phishing protection.
What is the best cheap VPN in 2026?
Surfshark is the best cheap VPN overall for most U.S. buyers. The recommendation reflects the combination of a low current long-term price, unlimited simultaneous connections, support for WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2, a strong mainstream streaming reputation, and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Surfshark’s official pricing page showed the Starter plan at $2.49 per month equivalent, billed as $67.23 for the first 27 months.

Surfshark is not automatically the right choice for every reader. The lowest price requires a long upfront commitment, renewal terms need to be checked at checkout, and some security and privacy extras are reserved for higher tiers. “Unlimited devices” means unlimited simultaneous VPN connections under one account; it does not mean unlimited accounts, bandwidth, or a guarantee that every household-sharing arrangement is permitted.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surfshark | Best overall budget choice | $2.49/mo equivalent; $67.23 upfront | 27 months | Unlimited | No comparable full free tier | 30 days | Renewal and tier differences require attention |

Prices and plan details were observed in August 2026 and can change by country, currency, tax, promotion, customer status, device, and checkout path. How were these cheap VPNs evaluated?
The ranking gives price transparency and total first-term cost 25% of the decision, privacy evidence 20%, speed and reliability 15%, streaming and torrenting suitability 15%, device support 10%, apps and support 10%, and refund and cancellation terms 5%. The weighting prevents a $1 promotional equivalent from automatically beating a slightly more expensive service with clearer privacy evidence and better reliability.
The recommendations combine current first-party plan information with published editorial comparisons. They are not claims of hands-on testing by the writer. Speed and streaming results depend on the test location, ISP, device, protocol, server distance, platform, country, and date. Current editorial comparisons place NordVPN among the strongest services for streaming, while Surfshark is commonly positioned as a lower-cost high-performance alternative; see TechRadar’s current VPN comparison.
How much does a cheap VPN really cost?
The real cost is the amount charged today, not the large monthly number displayed in a promotion. Calculate the first-term effective monthly cost as:
Effective monthly cost = total first-term charge ÷ number of service months.
Calculate the renewal cost separately:
Renewal cost per month = renewal charge ÷ renewal-term months.
| Provider | Advertised equivalent | What the current offer actually charges | Renewal information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surfshark Starter | $2.49/month | $67.23 for the first 27 months | Check the renewal amount and term at checkout |
| NordVPN Basic | $3.49/month | $94.23 for the first 27 months | $139.08 per year shown as the renewal signal |
| Private Internet Access | $2.03/month | $79 every three years, with three extra months in the observed offer | Recurring rate shown at checkout |
| PrivadoVPN | $1.11/month | Two years plus three months in the observed promotion | Verify the renewal rate before paying |
| CyberGhost | Promotional long-term rate | First-term price shown at official checkout | $56.94 yearly renewal signal |
| Mullvad | About $5.93/month | Flat monthly pricing | No deep long-term discount |
Taxes or VAT may be added at checkout. App-store purchases can have different prices, cancellation paths, and refund rules. A discounted term can also contain extra months, making the equivalent look lower than a simple 24- or 36-month comparison.

What should you check before buying a cheap VPN?
- Check the upfront charge. Confirm the exact amount charged today, including tax, rather than relying on the monthly equivalent.
- Check the service period. Confirm whether the offer covers 12, 15, 24, 27, 36, or 39 months.
- Check renewal. Record the renewal date, renewal amount, and renewal frequency. NordVPN states that subscriptions renew automatically and that renewal prices can be higher than introductory prices; its pricing information also says refunds for app-store purchases must be requested through the relevant store.
- Check the refund route. Direct purchases and Apple, Google, or Amazon purchases may follow different refund procedures.
- Check simultaneous connections. Confirm that the advertised number means active connections, not merely the number of devices on which the app can be installed.
- Check required features. Verify that the plan includes a kill switch, the protocol you need, router support, split tunneling, port forwarding, or threat-blocking features if those matter to you.
- Check the privacy policy and evidence. Look for what the provider says it logs, whether an audit is public, what the audit covered, and whether the evidence applies to the current apps and infrastructure.
Which cheap VPN is best for privacy?
Private Internet Access is the best mainstream value choice for privacy-focused bargain hunters, while Mullvad is the stronger privacy-first alternative and Proton VPN is the most credible free option. “Privacy” is not one switch: relevant factors include the no-logs policy, independent audits, open-source apps, transparency reports, warrant canaries, company jurisdiction, information required to create an account, anonymous payment options, server design, and real-world legal testing.
PIA combines a low observed long-term price with strong privacy-oriented positioning and customization. PIA is a particularly sensible choice for readers who want torrenting flexibility and do not mind a less streamlined interface. Mullvad uses a flat monthly model rather than deep multi-year discounts, making Mullvad less cheap in conventional promotional terms but attractive to readers who prefer a straightforward privacy-minimalist approach.
An audit does not prove that a VPN can never log data. An audit evaluates a defined scope at a particular time and may not cover every app, server, product, affiliate, or future infrastructure change. Country-of-incorporation labels such as “outside the 14 Eyes” also do not prove superior privacy by themselves.
Which cheap VPN is best for streaming?
NordVPN is the best choice when streaming reliability and speed matter more than the lowest price, with Surfshark as the value alternative. Published comparisons give NordVPN a strong streaming reputation, but no VPN can promise permanent access to every Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, or Max catalog. Streaming platforms actively block known VPN addresses, and results can change by server, country, account, and date.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →NordVPN’s higher price buys a more polished premium experience and stronger positioning for streaming and speed. Surfshark is the better value choice for a household that needs many simultaneous connections. A NordVPN Basic subscription does not include every ad-blocking, password-management, cloud-storage, identity-monitoring, or advanced threat-protection feature available in higher tiers.
If a streaming service stops working, try another server in the same country, sign out and back in, clear the browser or app cache, disable location permissions where relevant, switch protocol, and contact provider support. A dedicated IP may help in some situations but can cost extra and may reduce anonymity; a dedicated IP is not automatically the best streaming solution.
Which cheap VPN is best for torrenting?
Private Internet Access is the best low-cost recommendation for torrenting, with Mullvad as the privacy-focused alternative. Current editorial coverage positions PIA as a strong value torrenting option, and PIA’s low long-term price makes PIA attractive to users who need peer-to-peer support and customization.

Before subscribing, verify that peer-to-peer traffic is allowed on the servers and platform you will use. Check the kill switch, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, port-forwarding availability, supported protocols, and what connection metadata the provider says it retains. Port forwarding is not necessarily available on every platform or protocol.
Recommended Free Tools
A VPN does not make copyright infringement lawful or guarantee anonymity. A VPN can reduce exposure of your public IP address to other peers, but account data, payment records, provider-side information, browser fingerprinting, malware, and legal obligations remain separate issues.
Is a free VPN good enough?
A free VPN can be sufficient for occasional browsing or public-Wi-Fi protection, but a free VPN is usually a poor substitute for paid streaming, heavy downloads, many locations, or advanced features. Free services should be judged by data limits, server access, device restrictions, speed policies, ownership transparency, permissions, and privacy evidence—not just by price.
Proton VPN Free
Proton VPN Free is the strongest free recommendation for users who need unlimited data. Proton says its free plan has no data limit and no artificial speed limit on its pricing page. Proton’s free-versus-paid comparison explains that paid users receive faster access, more locations, streaming support, and advanced features. Proton VPN Free can work for basic browsing and occasional public Wi-Fi, but fewer server locations and free-tier restrictions make Proton VPN Free less suitable for reliable streaming, large downloads, selecting a precise country, or protecting many devices.
PrivadoVPN Free
PrivadoVPN Free is suitable for light, occasional use when a user wants a commercial provider with a defined allowance. PrivadoVPN’s official pricing page lists 10 GB every 30 days, which is not enough for continuous use or heavy streaming. PrivadoVPN is therefore a low-commitment trial-like option rather than a replacement for an unlimited paid plan.
Avoid unknown free VPN apps with aggressive advertising, invasive permissions, unclear ownership, or vague data-collection practices. The warning applies to the category generally and is not an accusation against every named free provider.
What features matter most in a cheap VPN?
| Priority | Features to look for | Why the feature matters |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | WireGuard or a comparable modern protocol, kill switch, DNS leak protection, IPv6 handling, compatible apps, clear refund rules | These features affect connection security, leak resistance, usability, and the ability to recover if the VPN disconnects |
| Useful secondary features | Split tunneling, ad/tracker blocking, multi-hop, obfuscation, router support, dedicated IP, port forwarding | These features solve particular use cases but are not necessary for every buyer |
| Do not rank by itself | Server count, “military-grade encryption,” fastest-VPN slogans, antivirus bundles, country count | Marketing labels and raw counts do not establish privacy, speed, coverage, or value without context |
Modern protocols can reduce the performance cost of encryption and routing, but a VPN usually does not make internet access faster. A nearby, lightly loaded server may minimize the slowdown, while a distant or congested server can make browsing and streaming worse. A VPN might improve routing to a particular service or hide a traffic type from ISP throttling, but neither outcome is guaranteed.

A VPN primarily encrypts traffic between the device and the VPN server and masks the public IP address. A VPN does not replace antivirus software, operating-system updates, a password manager, multifactor authentication, phishing awareness, or secure browser settings. Provider features that block ads, trackers, phishing domains, or malware domains are supplemental DNS or browser protections, not a complete security suite.
How many devices can one cheap VPN account protect?
Device limits refer mainly to simultaneous VPN connections, not the number of devices on which an app can be installed. Surfshark promotes unlimited simultaneous connections; NordVPN’s current Basic comparison lists up to 10 simultaneous devices; and PrivadoVPN advertises 10 connections on its paid offer. Router setups can count as one VPN connection while protecting multiple devices behind the router, but household-sharing rules still depend on the provider’s terms.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the best cheap VPN for a short trip?
A monthly VPN plan is usually the better choice for a trip lasting a few weeks, even though the monthly price is higher. A monthly plan avoids paying a large multi-year charge and avoids the risk of forgetting a renewal after the trip. Current official monthly examples include NordVPN Basic at $14.99, Private Internet Access at $11.95, and PrivadoVPN at $10.99.
Long-term plans make more sense when the buyer expects to use the VPN for at least the entire promotional term, has checked the renewal price, and is comfortable paying upfront. A monthly plan is also sensible when the buyer is testing whether a particular streaming service, work network, game, or country location works with the provider.
How should you test a VPN after subscribing?
- Install the official app on the device or operating system you actually use.
- Sign in and select WireGuard or the provider’s recommended modern protocol when available.
- Enable the kill switch.
- Enable DNS leak protection if the app lists the setting separately.
- Connect to a nearby server and verify that ordinary websites load.
- Test a video call, download, or other activity that reflects your normal use.
- Test the required streaming service only if streaming is part of your reason for buying.
- Confirm that the public IP address changes.
- Briefly test what happens when the VPN connection drops, then confirm that normal traffic is blocked if the kill switch is enabled.
- Screenshot the subscription price and renewal terms, record the purchase date, and disable auto-renewal if the subscription is only a trial period.
Exact app labels vary by operating system and app version, so a missing setting should be checked in the provider’s current support documentation rather than assumed to be absent.
How do you avoid cheap VPN renewal surprises?
Save the original purchase receipt, screenshot the checkout terms, check the renewal date in the account dashboard, and disable auto-renewal immediately if you do not want another term. Confirm whether cancellation stops the next renewal or ends access immediately; cancellation commonly prevents a future charge but does not necessarily produce an immediate refund.

- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Buy directly from the provider when the direct price is competitive and the direct refund policy suits you. Apple, Google, and Amazon purchases can use separate cancellation and refund systems, so a provider may not be able to process an app-store refund directly.
Which cheap VPN should you buy?
Choose Surfshark for the best balance of price, household device support, usability, and broad everyday value. Choose Private Internet Access when privacy-oriented features, customization, torrenting, and a low long-term price matter most. Choose NordVPN when streaming reliability, speed, and a polished experience justify paying more. Choose PrivadoVPN when the lowest observed paid price is the deciding factor and its smaller infrastructure is acceptable. Choose Proton VPN Free when you need a credible no-cost service with unlimited data. Choose Mullvad when privacy minimalism matters more than promotional pricing or streaming access. Consider CyberGhost when a streaming-oriented service and a longer money-back period are more important than leading performance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a cheap VPN safe?
A cheap VPN can be safe when the provider offers a modern protocol, kill switch, leak protection, clear privacy documentation, usable apps, and credible independent evidence. Low price alone does not establish safety, and a VPN does not replace updates, antivirus protection, strong passwords, multifactor authentication, or phishing awareness.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat is the cheapest good VPN in 2026?
PrivadoVPN had the lowest prominent paid equivalent in this comparison at $1.11 per month for two years plus three months, but Surfshark is the stronger overall value recommendation because Surfshark combines low pricing with unlimited simultaneous connections and a broader mainstream value proposition.
Is Surfshark better than Private Internet Access?
Surfshark is better for households, many simultaneous devices, ease of use, and a balanced everyday experience. Private Internet Access is better for buyers who prioritize customization, torrenting flexibility, privacy-oriented positioning, and a very low long-term cost.
Is NordVPN worth paying more for?
NordVPN can be worth paying more for streaming, speed, ease of use, and bundled security options. NordVPN is not the best value for a buyer whose only goal is the lowest price or unlimited simultaneous connections.
Should you pay monthly or buy a long-term VPN plan?
Pay monthly for a short trip, compatibility test, or uncertain use case; buy a long-term plan only when you expect to use the VPN throughout the promotional term and have checked the upfront charge, renewal rate, taxes, and refund rules.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Surfshark is the best cheap VPN for most buyers in 2026, but the best choice depends on the trade-off you care about. PIA is the privacy-and-torrenting bargain, NordVPN is the streaming-and-speed upgrade, PrivadoVPN is the price leader, Proton VPN is the strongest free option, Mullvad is the privacy minimalist’s choice, and CyberGhost is worth considering for streaming-focused buyers who value a longer refund period. Treat every promotion as temporary: compare the total upfront charge, not just the monthly equivalent, and set a reminder before automatic renewal.
