There is no single camera phone that wins every test in 2026. Expert verdicts split between the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra for still photography and versatility, the iPhone 17 Pro Max for the safest photo-and-video package, and the OPPO Find X9 Ultra for long-range photography.

For most buyers in the United States, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is the best camera phone for photos. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is the better all-round recommendation if video, sharing, and dependable results matter as much as still images.

Best camera phones of 2026 at a glance

Phone Best for Camera highlights Main drawback
Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra Still photography and versatility 200MP main, 50MP ultrawide, 3x and 5x telephoto cameras, 100x digital zoom Large camera bump; some Privacy Display compromises
Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max Photo-and-video balance Three 48MP rear cameras, 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120fps Less native telephoto reach than Samsung or OPPO
OPPO Find X9 Ultra Long-range photography 200MP main and telephoto cameras, native 10x optical zoom U.S. availability, bands, and warranty need careful checking
Google Pixel 10 Pro XL Computational photography and editing 50MP main, 48MP ultrawide, 5x telephoto, strong AI tools Its strengths rely heavily on software processing
OnePlus 15 Action photography 50MP main, ultrawide and telephoto cameras, 3.5x optical zoom Some camera modes are less proven than those on the top two

1. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra: best for still photography

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is the strongest choice if your priority is taking still photos across many distances and lighting conditions. Its rear camera system includes a 200MP wide camera, 50MP ultrawide, 10MP 3x telephoto, and 50MP 5x telephoto.

That dual-telephoto arrangement is more useful than a headline zoom number. The 3x lens works well for portraits and nearby subjects, while the 5x camera gives you more reach for travel, sports, buildings, and distant details. Samsung also lists 2x and 10x as “optical quality” zoom steps. Those are not separate native optical lenses, so they should not be confused with the phone’s actual 3x and 5x optical cameras.

  • Instead of typing, use Gemini Live to have a natural, free-flowing conversation; point your camera at what you’re curious about – like a sea creature at the aquarium – or chat - Gemini to brainstorm ideas or get things done across apps[4]

Samsung lists up to 100x digital zoom. It can be useful for framing or identifying a distant object, but photos at the extreme end should not be treated as equivalent to images taken with the native telephoto cameras.

Why experts rate it highly

  • Two dedicated telephoto cameras cover more useful focal lengths.
  • The high-resolution main camera provides room to crop in good light.
  • Low-light performance and image processing have improved.
  • Pro Video supports 4K at 120fps, while 8K recording reaches 30fps.
  • Horizontal Lock video helps keep footage level while recording movement.

Tom’s Guide currently ranks the Galaxy S26 Ultra first after head-to-head testing against the iPhone 17 Pro, and PhoneArena also selects it for still photography. The compromises are practical rather than photographic: the phone is large, the camera bump is substantial, and Samsung’s Privacy Display can affect image quality. Qi2 charging is supported, but the phone does not include built-in magnets, so magnetic accessories may require a compatible case.

2. iPhone 17 Pro Max: best overall photo-and-video phone

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is the safest recommendation for buyers who shoot both photos and video. TechRadar currently names it the best overall camera phone, citing its balance of image quality, video performance, and processing.

Its rear system consists of a 48MP Fusion Main, 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, and 48MP Fusion Telephoto. The telephoto camera provides 4x optical zoom and 8x optical-quality zoom, with up to 40x digital zoom for photos.

Apple’s video implementation is one of the phone’s biggest advantages. The main camera records 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 120fps. Apple also supports ProRes at 4K/120fps, but that mode requires external recording. That condition matters if you are buying the phone specifically for professional slow-motion or high-bitrate footage.

The front-facing camera is an 18MP Center Stage camera with autofocus, tap-to-zoom, rotation, and automatic framing features. It is particularly useful for video calls, group selfies, and creators who record themselves without constantly adjusting the phone.

Choose the iPhone if you:

  • Record video more often than you use extreme zoom.
  • Want consistent color and exposure between cameras.
  • Use a Mac, iPad, AirDrop, or Apple’s video-editing ecosystem.
  • Need reliable stabilization and a straightforward camera app.
  • Prefer a polished front camera for calls and social video.

The smaller iPhone 17 Pro is also worth considering. Tom’s Guide names it the best iPhone camera in its testing, largely because it offers the same core rear-camera approach and Center Stage selfie camera in a more compact body. Choose the Pro Max mainly for its larger display and battery rather than expecting a completely different camera system.

3. OPPO Find X9 Ultra: best for serious zoom

The OPPO Find X9 Ultra is the specialist option for photographers who regularly shoot distant subjects. It combines a 200MP main camera, 200MP telephoto, 50MP ultrawide, and 50MP ultra-telephoto. Most importantly, the ultra-telephoto camera provides native 10x optical zoom.

That native 10x reach is a meaningful hardware advantage for wildlife, travel, stage performances, architecture, and compressed-background portraits. OPPO also lists up to 20x optical-quality zoom and 30x digital zoom for video. Rear-camera video supports both 8K/30fps and 4K/120fps.

Expert Reviews names the Find X9 Ultra its best camera phone overall, specifically praising its 10x telephoto, lens versatility, portraits, night photography, ultrawide camera, and 50MP selfie camera.

There is an important buying warning for U.S. readers. The Find X9 Ultra received a global launch in April 2026, but that does not guarantee official U.S. retail availability or U.S. warranty coverage. Before importing one, check the exact model number, 5G and LTE band support, Google services, regional software, repair options, and return policy. A cheaper imported phone can become an expensive mistake if it does not work properly on your carrier.

4. Google Pixel 10 Pro XL: best for computational photography

The Pixel 10 Pro XL is the best fit for people who want Google’s automatic processing and editing tools more than a large collection of physical lenses. It has a 50MP wide camera, 48MP ultrawide with Macro Focus, and 48MP 5x telephoto.

Google’s Pro Zoom reaches 100x, with optical-quality steps at 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 5x, and 10x. As with Samsung’s 100x setting, that number describes computational zoom rather than a native 100x optical lens.

The Pixel’s software feature list is unusually broad. Depending on the shot, you can use Night Sight, Astrophotography, Macro Focus, High-Res Portrait Mode, Face Unblur, Auto Unblur, Long Exposure, Action Pan, Best Take, Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, Zoom Enhance, Portrait Light, Camera Coach, and Add Me.

Pick the Pixel if you often need to rescue imperfect photos after taking them. It is especially appealing for family pictures, group shots, low-light scenes, and quick edits. However, buyers who prefer natural-looking output or extensive manual control may prefer Samsung or Apple.

5. OnePlus 15: best for action photography

The OnePlus 15 is a credible alternative for photographing moving subjects. TechRadar ranks it as its best camera phone for action, highlighting its ability to capture moving subjects and its detailed zoom photographs.

Tom’s Guide lists a 50MP main camera, 50MP ultrawide, and 50MP telephoto with 3.5x optical zoom. That combination gives it a useful hardware base, but it does not offer the same long-range flexibility as Samsung’s dual telephoto system or OPPO’s native 10x camera.

OnePlus is worth considering for children, pets, sports, and informal outdoor shooting. Its position is less secure for buyers who need a mature, fully tested set of specialized camera modes; TechRadar’s review notes that some modes still required further testing.

How the experts tested these phones

The rankings are not based on megapixel counts. Different publications emphasize different types of use, which explains why their winners do not match.

Source Testing emphasis Current conclusion
TechRadar Overall photo and video balance, plus category recommendations iPhone 17 Pro Max overall; Pixel 10 Pro XL for AI; OnePlus 15 for action
Tom’s Guide Head-to-head photo comparisons, camera apps, manual controls, video modes, portrait video, and dual capture Galaxy S26 Ultra overall; iPhone 17 Pro as best iPhone
PhoneArena Hundreds of photos and videos, measuring color, sharpness, exposure, usability, and features Galaxy S26 Ultra for still photography
Expert Reviews Low light, night scenes, portraits, ultrawide, zoom, macro, video resolutions, frame rates, and stabilization OPPO Find X9 Ultra overall

Expert Reviews compares each phone with a rival or predecessor instead of testing it in isolation. That is important: a phone can produce excellent images and still lose a comparison because another model handles skin tones, moving subjects, or video stabilization better.

What to check before buying

  1. Identify your most common focal length. For landscapes and interiors, prioritize the ultrawide. For portraits and distant subjects, check the native telephoto specifications. Do not buy based only on a 100x or 200x marketing number.
  2. Separate optical zoom from computational zoom. Native optical cameras use a physical lens. “Optical quality,” “hybrid,” “Pro Zoom,” and “digital zoom” involve cropping, processing, or both.
  3. Check the exact video mode. The iPhone’s ProRes 4K/120fps requires external recording. Samsung places 4K/120fps under Pro Video. OPPO lists 4K/120fps for rear-camera video. These are not identical capabilities.
  4. Consider moving subjects. A phone that produces the sharpest static night scene may not be the best choice for pets, children, or sports. Fast autofocus, shutter behavior, and processing matter more than resolution.
  5. Verify imported-phone support. Check the model number, carrier bands, eSIM behavior, Google services, warranty, and software update policy before buying an overseas model.
  6. Look beyond megapixels. Exposure, autofocus, color accuracy, lens consistency, stabilization, camera-app controls, and the quality of video processing all affect the final image.

Which camera phone should you buy?

Buy the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra if still photos, zoom flexibility, and a broad set of shooting options are your priorities. Its 3x and 5x telephoto cameras make it the most versatile mainstream choice.

Buy the iPhone 17 Pro Max if you want the least-compromised combination of photos and video, especially for recording, editing, and sharing video. It is the best default recommendation for people who do not want to specialize.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy the OPPO Find X9 Ultra if native 10x optical zoom is more valuable than guaranteed U.S. retail support. Confirm regional compatibility before placing an order.

Buy the Pixel 10 Pro XL if automatic enhancement and editing tools are central to how you take pictures. Buy the OnePlus 15 if action photography is your main concern and you are comfortable choosing a less established camera platform.

FAQ

What is the best camera phone of 2026?

The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is the strongest choice for still photography and lens versatility. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is the safer overall photo-and-video recommendation. Expert Reviews selects the OPPO Find X9 Ultra overall, particularly for its native 10x telephoto, so the answer depends on how you shoot.

Is 100x zoom the same as 100x optical zoom?

No. Samsung describes 100x as digital zoom, while Google calls its 100x mode Pro Zoom. Both use computational processing beyond the phones’ physical lenses. The OPPO Find X9 Ultra is different because it has a native 10x optical telephoto camera.

Which phone is best for 4K 120fps video?

The iPhone 17 Pro Max, Galaxy S26 Ultra, and OPPO Find X9 Ultra all list 4K/120fps support, but the conditions differ. Apple’s ProRes 4K/120fps requires external recording, Samsung lists 4K/120fps in Pro Video, and OPPO specifies the mode for rear-camera video.

Is the OPPO Find X9 Ultra available in the United States?

Its global launch does not automatically mean official U.S. retail availability or U.S. warranty coverage. Check the exact model’s carrier bands, Google services, regional software, repair support, and warranty before importing it.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is the best camera phone for most still photographers in 2026, thanks to its 200MP main camera and dual telephoto system. Choose the iPhone 17 Pro Max for the best balanced photo-and-video experience, the OPPO Find X9 Ultra for native 10x zoom, the Pixel 10 Pro XL for AI-powered photography, or the OnePlus 15 for action shots.
