The best authenticator app is the one that can restore your codes when your phone is lost without making account recovery dangerously easy. For most people, that means 2FAS for a simple free app, Aegis for Android users who want a local encrypted vault, Ente Auth for encrypted cross-platform syncing, and Microsoft Authenticator when work or school accounts are involved.

We compared the apps on code generation, backup and restore, cross-device support, account recovery, QR-code handling, and day-to-day friction. Authenticator apps generate time-based one-time passwords (TOTP), usually six-digit codes that change every 30 seconds. They do not replace a strong password manager or a hardware security key, but they are a major improvement over SMS verification.

Best authenticator apps at a glance

App Best for Platforms Main limitation
2FAS Auth Most people who want a straightforward free authenticator Android, iPhone Its smoothest workflow is mobile-first; desktop browser support depends on the companion extension
Aegis Authenticator Android users who want local control and encrypted backups Android No official iPhone version
Ente Auth Encrypted syncing across phones and computers Android, iPhone, Windows, macOS, Linux, web Cloud sync adds another account to protect
Microsoft Authenticator Microsoft 365, Entra ID, and work or school sign-ins Android, iPhone Some features are controlled by an organization rather than the user
Google Authenticator A familiar, minimal option Android, iPhone Fewer vault, organization, and recovery controls than some rivals
Proton Pass Users who already keep passwords in Proton Pass Android, iPhone, browser, desktop The authenticator is part of a broader password manager rather than a dedicated app

Our pick: 2FAS Auth

2FAS is the best default for users who want a dedicated authenticator without building a complicated security system. It handles standard TOTP accounts cleanly, supports biometric or device protection, and offers backup options so a broken or lost phone does not automatically lock you out of every account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its companion browser extension can make sign-in less irritating: when a website asks for a code, you can request the current token from the phone rather than repeatedly switching windows. The extension is a convenience, not a replacement for the protected mobile vault.

#1 Best Overall
Yubico - YubiKey 5C NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
  • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts

How to add an account in 2FAS

  1. Open 2FAS and tap +.
  2. Choose Scan QR code and scan the setup QR code shown by the account provider.
  3. If scanning is unavailable, select the manual option and enter the account name, secret key, and token type supplied by the provider.
  4. Enter the six-digit code displayed by 2FAS on the website to finish enabling two-factor authentication.
  5. Save the provider’s recovery codes in a password manager or another secure location. Do not store them only inside the phone being protected.

Watch for this failure: deleting an entry from the authenticator does not disable two-factor authentication on the online account. You must first turn off or replace 2FA in that account’s security settings, or use its recovery process.

Best Android authenticator: Aegis

Aegis is the strongest choice for Android users who prefer ownership of their data over seamless multi-platform syncing. It stores tokens in an encrypted vault, supports biometric unlocking, and can export an encrypted backup. It also provides useful organization features such as groups and search once the vault contains dozens of accounts.

Aegis is especially suitable for users who do not want their TOTP secrets automatically uploaded to a provider’s cloud. That privacy comes with responsibility: if you lose the phone and never created a usable backup, there may be no recovery shortcut.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set up an Aegis backup

  1. Open Aegis and unlock the vault.
  2. Open the overflow menu and choose Settings.
  3. Open the backup or export section and configure an encrypted backup.
  4. Store the resulting backup file somewhere separate from the phone, such as an encrypted computer drive or a carefully protected cloud-storage folder.
  5. Test the backup on a spare Android device before relying on it. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.

Aegis is not the right choice if you regularly move between Android, iPhone, and desktop devices. Use Ente Auth or a password manager with authenticator support instead.

Best cross-platform authenticator: Ente Auth

Ente Auth is a good middle ground between a dedicated token app and a cloud-synced vault. It encrypts data before syncing and supports phones as well as desktop platforms and the web. That makes it practical for someone who uses an iPhone at home, an Android tablet, or a computer where copying a code from a desktop app is easier than reading it from a phone.

Yubico - YubiKey 5 NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-A or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate.

The tradeoff is account security. Your TOTP secrets are protected by Ente’s encryption design, but the Ente account itself becomes important. Use a strong, unique password and protect the account with an additional sign-in method where available. Keep emergency recovery information offline.

When Ente Auth is the better choice

  • You need the same token vault on Android, iPhone, and desktop.
  • You want encrypted synchronization but do not want a full password manager.
  • You are willing to maintain a separate recovery plan for the sync account.

Best for Microsoft accounts: Microsoft Authenticator

Microsoft Authenticator is the obvious choice for Microsoft 365, Microsoft Entra ID, and many work or school accounts. In addition to TOTP codes, it can support push approvals, passwordless sign-in, and number matching when the organization permits those methods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Number matching is safer than blindly tapping “Approve”: the sign-in page shows a number and the app asks you to enter the same number. Never approve a prompt you did not initiate. Repeated unexpected prompts can indicate that someone has your password and is trying to overcome your second factor through notification fatigue.

Useful Microsoft Authenticator paths

For a personal Microsoft account, open account.microsoft.com, choose Security, then Manage how I sign in or the equivalent two-step-verification option, and select the Authenticator app. For a work or school account, the administrator may direct you to mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info. The exact options can be restricted by the organization.

Microsoft’s cloud backup is not a universal restore mechanism for every account type. After moving to a new phone, check each restored entry and be prepared to re-register accounts that require new device enrollment.

Yubico - YubiKey 5C NFC FIPS (140-3) - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • NIST Certification: FIPS 140-3 validated for government and regulated organizations (Overall Level 2, Physical Security Level 3).
  • Works with 1000+ Accounts: Supported by Google and Microsoft accounts, Identity Access Managers, password managers and 1000+ popular services. It works with operating systems and browsers including Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, Linux, Chrome, and Edge.
  • Fast & Convenient Login: Plug in your YubiKey via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • Most Secure Passkey: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it.
  • Built to Last: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Made in Sweden with the highest security standards.

Best simple option: Google Authenticator

Google Authenticator remains a sensible choice when you want a small, familiar app and do not need advanced vault management. It can generate codes offline, and its current ecosystem supports transferring or synchronizing tokens depending on the account and configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its simplicity is also the limitation. Before changing phones, verify whether your tokens are synchronized or whether you need to use the app’s transfer function. If the old phone still works, open the app’s menu and look for Transfer accounts, then export the selected accounts and scan the generated QR code on the new device. Treat that transfer QR code as sensitive: anyone who scans it may obtain the TOTP secrets.

Google Authenticator is not a cure for a missing recovery plan. Save each service’s backup codes and keep at least one alternative recovery method before removing the old phone.

Best if you already use a password manager

Proton Pass

Proton Pass can store TOTP secrets alongside the matching login, so the username, password, and current code are available in one protected item. This is convenient and reduces the number of apps involved. It also means that compromising the password-manager account could expose both the password and the second factor, removing much of the separation between them.

1Password

1Password offers a similar workflow for users already committed to its vault. It is polished for desktop sign-ins and sharing credentials with a household or team, but it should not be selected solely to obtain TOTP codes. The main reason to choose it is the complete password-management system.

For high-value accounts, consider keeping the TOTP code in a separate authenticator or using a FIDO2 security key. Convenience and independence are competing goals here.

Authenticator apps versus SMS and passkeys

Method Strength Weakness
Authenticator app Works without mobile service and resists many SIM-swap attacks Phone loss or a missing backup can cause lockout; phishing sites can still relay codes
SMS code Works on almost any phone and is easy to deploy Vulnerable to SIM swaps, number takeover, and some carrier attacks
Passkey or security key Strong phishing resistance and no six-digit code to copy Support and recovery procedures vary; users still need a backup device or method

Use a passkey or hardware security key where a service supports it, particularly for email, password managers, domain administration, and financial accounts. Keep an authenticator app as a backup only when the service’s recovery design makes that sensible.

How to move authenticator codes to a new phone safely

  1. Do not wipe the old phone yet. Keep it charged and connected until every account has been tested.
  2. Install the same authenticator on the new phone and restore from its encrypted backup or use its official transfer tool.
  3. Test sign-in to each important account in a private browser window. Check the code and confirm that the service accepts the new device.
  4. Regenerate recovery codes if the provider recommends it after a device change.
  5. Remove the old device from the account’s security page only after the new method works.
  6. Erase the old phone securely only when the migration is complete.

Codes can fail after a migration because the phone’s clock is wrong. Enable automatic date and time, then retry. On Android, check Settings → System → Date & time → Set time automatically. On iPhone, check Settings → General → Date & Time → Set Automatically. TOTP depends on the device and server having nearly the same time.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Deleting the code before disabling 2FA: the online account still expects the token.
  • Keeping recovery codes in the same phone: theft or damage can remove both the authenticator and its backup.
  • Taking a screenshot of a setup QR code: the QR code contains the secret used to generate future codes.
  • Approving an unexpected push: reject it and change the account password if suspicious prompts continue.
  • Putting every factor in one vault without considering the risk: a password manager is convenient, but separation can reduce the impact of one compromise.
  • Assuming every restored token works: some employer-managed accounts require fresh enrollment on the new device.

  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

Can I use an authenticator app without internet access?

Yes. TOTP codes are generated on the device and normally work without Wi-Fi or mobile service. Internet access may still be required for push approvals, synchronization, or account enrollment.

What happens if I lose my phone with my authenticator codes?

Restore the authenticator from a backup if available, use the service’s saved recovery codes, or contact the service’s account-recovery team. Do not assume the authenticator provider can recover tokens unless you explicitly configured synchronization or backup.

The Bottom Line

Choose 2FAS Auth for the best uncomplicated dedicated app, Aegis for an Android-only local vault, and Ente Auth for encrypted cross-platform syncing. Use Microsoft Authenticator for Microsoft work and school accounts, and choose Proton Pass or 1Password when TOTP codes belong naturally inside an existing password manager.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Whichever app you choose, save recovery codes, protect the vault with a lock method, and test a restore before your old phone fails. The backup plan is part of two-factor authentication—not an optional extra.
