For most home offices, the Epson EcoTank ET-3850 is the best alternative to the HP OfficeJet Pro 8125. Its refillable ink tanks, automatic document feeder, automatic two-sided printing, Wi-Fi and Ethernet cover everyday office work while reducing the recurring cost of replacement ink. Choose the Canon Color imageCLASS MF753Cdw II if you need fast laser documents and fax, the Brother INKvestment MFC-T780DW for the lowest-cost high-volume ink workflow, the Canon MegaTank Pixma G3290 for inexpensive color photos, or the Epson EcoTank ET-4950 when duplex scanning and larger paper capacity matter most.

Why replace the HP OfficeJet Pro 8125?

The OfficeJet Pro 8125 is a cartridge-based color all-in-one. It prints, scans and copies, using separate HP 923 black, cyan, magenta and yellow cartridges; HP also lists EvoMore versions of those cartridges. That design is convenient when you print intermittently, but every color page depends on replaceable cartridges and their page yields and prices.

An alternative makes sense when your home office has a different priority: lower long-term ink cost, faster text, a larger paper supply, automatic duplex scanning, fax, or better photo handling. No single model wins every category, so match the printer to your actual workload instead of choosing by headline speed or purchase price alone.

Best overall: Epson EcoTank ET-3850

Why it suits a typical home office

The ET-3850 is the broadest replacement for the 8125 when your work mixes invoices, schoolwork, forms, color charts and occasional photos. It combines color printing, scanning and copying with an ADF, so multi-page originals can be fed without placing each sheet on the scanner glass. Automatic two-sided printing cuts paper use for reports and drafts. Wi-Fi supports ordinary home-network printing, while Ethernet gives a more stable wired connection for a desk or small office network.

Its refillable tanks change the economics of regular color work. Instead of replacing a cartridge for each color, you add bottled ink to the corresponding tank. That usually means a larger upfront purchase than a cartridge printer, but fewer and less frequent consumable purchases when you print regularly.

Where it falls short

  • The initial printer price is higher than a basic cartridge all-in-one.
  • There is no fax function, so a fax-dependent workflow needs another model.
  • The configuration described here has an ADF but not duplex scanning. For a two-sided original, you must turn the pages or scan each side separately; an ADF alone does not imply one-pass duplex capture.

Choose it when

Buy the ET-3850 when you want the lowest-friction balance of low running cost, networking, automatic duplex printing and occasional multi-page scanning, and you do not need fax or automatic two-sided scanning.

Best for fast text and fax: Canon Color imageCLASS MF753Cdw II

What the laser workflow changes

The MF753Cdw II is a color laser multifunction printer that prints, copies, scans and faxes. It connects over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or USB-A. Laser printing is particularly useful for a home office that produces many crisp text pages, shipping labels and forms in bursts, because toner does not dry out between jobs in the way liquid ink can.

Tom’s Guide selected this model as its best overall all-in-one and reported rapid speeds. In that guide’s 2026 test context, the calculated consumable cost was approximately 51 cents per color page and 27 cents per mono page. Those are test-specific, time-sensitive figures rather than a guaranteed price: toner yields, street prices, regional supplies and the proportion of color on a page all change the result.

Trade-offs

  • It is heavy, so plan the printer’s permanent location before delivery.
  • Toner is expensive compared with a refillable-tank system, especially for sustained color printing.
  • A laser printer has a higher hardware and consumable commitment if your workload is mostly occasional pages.

Choose it when

Select the MF753Cdw II if speed, dependable text output, fax and a full wired/wireless connection set are more important than the lowest color-page cost or a compact footprint.

Best value and low ink cost: Brother INKvestment MFC-T780DW

Why tank economics matter

The MFC-T780DW is Tom’s Guide’s value pick. It is described as fast for both printing and scanning and as having very low ink costs. Its tank system uses refill bottles rather than conventional cartridges. Bottle yields are generally much higher than cartridge yields, which is why ink-tank printers usually have the lowest running costs among color all-in-ones when they are used regularly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This model is a good fit for a household that prints enough to justify filling tanks but cannot justify a color laser’s toner expense. It is also practical when scanning speed matters as much as printing speed.

Important ADF limitation

The MFC-T780DW has an ADF, but its ADF does not support duplex scanning or duplex copying. It can automate a stack of one-sided originals; it cannot automatically capture both sides of a two-sided stack. You would need to turn the pages and run them again for a double-sided archive or copy job.

Choose it when

Choose the MFC-T780DW for frequent color printing and scanning at low consumable cost, provided your originals are normally single-sided or you are comfortable with manual page turning.

Best budget tank for photos: Canon MegaTank Pixma G3290

What it is designed to do

The G3290 belongs to Canon’s MegaTank family and is positioned as a budget-friendly, photo-friendly printer. A tank system keeps the cost of producing many color pages below a conventional cartridge workflow, while Canon’s consumer-oriented print design is a better match for snapshots, invitations and occasional graphics than a text-only monochrome laser.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the regional specification

Exact G3290 equipment varies by market. The closely related G3270 class is described as a basic print/scan/copy tank model with an 11 ipm mono rating and a 100-sheet capacity. That class does not include automatic duplex printing, a touchscreen or an ADF. Do not assume every G3290 listing has the same features: check the local product sheet for ADF presence, duplex support, tray capacity and the included interface before buying.

Choose it when

The G3290 is the sensible choice for a budget-conscious home that values inexpensive color and photo output more than high-volume document automation. It is less suitable for a desk that routinely scans contracts or prints long two-sided reports.

Best for duplex scanning and heavier color volume: Epson EcoTank ET-4950

Features that distinguish it

The ET-4950 series is a four-in-one home-office and small-business ink-tank printer: print, scan, copy and fax are all included. TechRadar describes an 18 ppm mono speed, a 250-sheet paper capacity, automatic duplex scanning and automatic duplex printing. The touchscreen is intended to make copying, scanning and printer setup more direct than relying on a computer for every task.

Automatic duplex scanning is the key advantage over the ET-3850, MFC-T780DW and the basic G3270-class configuration. With compatible two-sided originals, the document feeder can capture both sides automatically, which is valuable for tax records, signed agreements and multi-page archives.

Ink and connectivity caveats

Epson estimates that the included ink can last about three years, although the real period depends on page coverage and print frequency. In its comparison, TechRadar states that bottled ink costs 95% less than cartridge ink; treat that as a comparison claim under its stated assumptions, not a promise for every country or usage pattern.

The ET-4950 has no USB host port, NFC, Bluetooth or multipurpose tray. If you expect to print from a USB flash drive, tap a phone using NFC, connect over Bluetooth or feed specialty media through a separate multipurpose path, those omissions may matter.

Choose it when

Choose the ET-4950 for a busy color home office that needs fax, a 250-sheet supply, automatic two-sided scanning and printing, and tank-level running costs.

Ink tank, cartridge or laser: which technology fits?

Cartridge ink

The 8125’s cartridge approach is straightforward: install separate black, cyan, magenta and yellow cartridges and replace the depleted color. It works well for low, unpredictable volume because the printer has a lower commitment to a large ink purchase and requires no tank refilling. The trade-off is that recurring cartridge purchases can become expensive as pages accumulate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Refillable ink tanks

ET-3850, MFC-T780DW, G3290 and ET-4950 use refillable tanks. Bottles normally deliver more pages per refill than conventional cartridges, which drives the lowest running costs for sustained color work. Tanks are most economical when you print often enough to use the ink within the manufacturer’s storage and maintenance guidance. Keep bottles upright, use the specified ink, and avoid letting a tank run empty; air in an ink system can create quality problems.

Color laser toner

The MF753Cdw II uses toner. It is a strong fit for fast, sharp text and bursty office work, and toner remains stable during idle periods. The price is higher consumables for color pages, plus a larger and heavier machine. Compare the cost of the colors you actually use rather than relying on a black-only yield when your documents contain logos or highlighted tables.

ADF, automatic duplex printing and duplex scanning are different

  • ADF: loads a stack of originals so you do not place every page on the scanner glass.
  • Automatic duplex printing: prints on both sides of a blank sheet without manually reinserting it.
  • Duplex scanning: captures both sides of a two-sided original automatically. Depending on the feeder design, this may happen in one pass or by turning the sheet internally.

An ADF does not guarantee either type of duplex operation. The ET-3850 has an ADF and automatic duplex printing but no duplex scanning in the cited configuration. The MFC-T780DW’s ADF cannot duplex-scan or duplex-copy. The ET-4950 is the model in this group specifically described with automatic duplex scanning and printing. If your workflow is mostly single-sided invoices, any ADF may be enough; if you digitize two-sided records weekly, require explicit duplex-scan wording.

How to compare the total cost

Start with pages, not the sticker price

Estimate your monthly pages by separating black-text pages, color office pages and photos. A cartridge printer can be reasonable for very light use, while a tank becomes more economical as page count rises. A color laser may justify its higher toner cost when speed and uptime are worth more than the lowest consumable price.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use comparable consumable assumptions

When comparing prices, use the same page-coverage assumption and include every color you normally print. A quoted mono cost cannot predict the cost of a color-heavy report. The MF753Cdw II figures of approximately 51 cents per color page and 27 cents per mono page are useful reference points only within Tom’s Guide’s 2026 test conditions.

Include maintenance and paper

Tank printers reduce ink cost but still need periodic use and cleaning. Laser printers avoid liquid-ink drying concerns but require toner and may occupy more space. Automatic duplex printing can lower paper consumption; duplex scanning can lower labor when archiving two-sided originals. Add paper, replacement parts and the value of your time to a realistic three-year estimate.

Buying checklist

  • Confirm the exact model suffix and regional specification, especially for the G3290 and any ET-4950 listing.
  • Decide whether you need fax; the ET-3850 does not include it, while the MF753Cdw II and ET-4950 do.
  • Check whether you need duplex scanning, not merely an ADF or automatic duplex printing.
  • Compare black and color consumable prices and stated yields for your country.
  • Measure the installation space. The MF753Cdw II is specifically described as heavy.
  • Verify connection options: Wi-Fi and Ethernet are available on the ET-3850 and MF753Cdw II; the ET-4950 lacks USB host, NFC and Bluetooth.
  • Check paper capacity against your refill interval: the G3270 class is 100 sheets, while the ET-4950 is described with 250 sheets.
  • Confirm the return policy and local availability before committing to a model with specialized bottles or toner.

Setup and operating practices that prevent common problems

For any tank printer

  1. Place the printer level and leave clearance for the scanner lid, feeder and ink-tank access.
  2. Fill each tank only with its matching color and the specified bottle type; mixing colors can require service rather than a simple cleaning cycle.
  3. Complete the alignment and nozzle-check routine before judging print quality.
  4. Print a small color page periodically if the printer otherwise sits unused, following the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance.
  5. Keep spare bottles sealed and upright, and record the bottle model so a future refill is not guessed.

For duplex documents

  1. Check the driver or printer panel for a two-sided option before sending the job.
  2. For scanning, verify that the scan dialog explicitly says duplex or two-sided; “ADF” alone is insufficient.
  3. Test a short two-page original first. Confirm page order, orientation and whether blank backs are removed automatically.
  4. If the feeder is simplex-only, scan one side, turn the stack in the documented order and combine the pages in software.

When a job is slower or more expensive than expected

  • Color coverage, photo mode and high-quality settings consume more ink or toner than ordinary draft text.
  • A wireless connection can add delays or failed jobs; use Ethernet or USB where the model supports it and the network is unreliable.
  • For a laser printer, allow the machine’s warm-up and processing time before assuming a fault.
  • For a tank printer, inspect the selected paper type and quality setting before starting repeated head-cleaning cycles.

Which alternative should you buy?

Buy the Epson EcoTank ET-3850 if you want the safest all-round replacement for a home-office 8125: low-cost tank ink, an ADF, automatic duplex printing and both Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Choose the Canon Color imageCLASS MF753Cdw II when rapid laser documents and fax outweigh toner cost and weight. Choose the Brother INKvestment MFC-T780DW for value and very low ink costs when duplex scanning is not required. Choose the Canon MegaTank Pixma G3290 for budget-friendly color and photos after verifying the local specification. Choose the Epson EcoTank ET-4950 when automatic duplex scanning, 250-sheet capacity, fax and heavier color-office use justify its feature set.

Before purchase, verify the regional model suffix, current price, stock and consumable pricing. Those details can change the best choice more than a small difference in advertised print speed.
