The right follow-up to an award-winning game depends on which part you want to keep: precise platforming, clever card runs, a character-driven story, or demanding action combat. This guide uses four recent award anchors—Astro Bot, Balatro, Metaphor: ReFantazio, plus the action-focused finalists Black Myth: Wukong and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth—then matches each with alternatives that change one important ingredient without abandoning the genre’s core appeal.

Awards are useful discovery signals, not guarantees that every game will suit you. Use the comparison tables to identify the feature you want to preserve, then verify the current platform, edition, region and availability before buying.

How to choose an alternative instead of a copy

Start by naming the feature that made the original work for you. A player asking “What should I play after Astro Bot?” might mean joyful 3D movement, family-friendly presentation, collectible hunting or a polished PlayStation production. Someone searching for “games like Balatro” may want fast runs and improbable combos, or may actually want a deeper deck-construction campaign. The best recommendation changes with that answer.

  • Keep the movement: choose another platformer, even if its camera, art style or difficulty differs.
  • Keep the run-based loop: choose a deckbuilder with similar randomness and replayability rather than a traditional card battler.
  • Keep the story and character relationships: look for a long-form RPG with party and social systems.
  • Keep the combat challenge: decide whether you prefer a boss-focused action game, a flexible build system or a more cinematic adventure.

The recommendations below are grouped by that kind of promise. They are alternatives, not claims that one game is objectively better than an award winner.

3D platformers and action-adventure: alternatives to Astro Bot

Astro Bot is the clearest recent anchor for polished 3D platforming. GameDeveloper.com reported on December 13, 2024 that Team Asobi’s game won The Game Awards 2024 Game of the Year. It also won Game Direction, Action/Adventure and Family Game. Those wins point to a specific combination: responsive movement, tightly authored stages, playful presentation and broad accessibility.

The alternatives below preserve some of that combination while changing the camera, structure, tone or difficulty. The current Astro Bot release is for PS5, so platform differences matter if you are choosing for a family or a mixed-console household.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder — choose it for inventive platforming in 2D

Super Mario Bros. Wonder replaces Astro Bot’s depth and camera management with side-scrolling precision. Its stages are short, heavily themed and built around surprise transformations, making it a strong choice when you want constant mechanical novelty rather than a three-dimensional collectathon. The Wonder Flower events can radically alter a level, so the game feels more experimental than a traditional run-and-jump platformer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a better fit for local group play and players who prefer readable 2D hazards. It is not a substitute for Astro Bot’s camera-based exploration, environmental scale or PlayStation character cameos. Choose it when accessibility, quick sessions and shared play matter more than 3D movement.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure — choose it for cooperative 3D stages

Sackboy: A Big Adventure keeps a friendly 3D perspective but puts more emphasis on cooperative play and craft-themed worlds. Its levels support teamwork, optional collectibles and straightforward objectives. Compared with Astro Bot, movement is less acrobatic and the challenge curve is gentler, but the structure is easy to understand for younger or less experienced players.

Pick Sackboy when two people want to play together on the same screen or when a softer tone is important. Solo players seeking demanding movement trials may find Astro Bot more precise.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart — choose it for spectacle and combat

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is an action-adventure rather than a pure platformer. It combines jumping and traversal with weapon upgrades, enemy encounters and cinematic set pieces. Rift-based transitions make its worlds feel technically showy, while the arsenal gives combat more weight than Astro Bot’s mostly movement-driven challenges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the alternative for players who enjoyed Astro Bot’s visual polish but want shooting, character progression and a longer narrative campaign. Its combat encounters interrupt platforming more often, and its tone is closer to a family action film than a toy-box platforming showcase.

Psychonauts 2 — choose it for imaginative worlds and story

Psychonauts 2 uses 3D platforming to explore characters’ inner worlds. Levels are more open to interpretation, with double-jump, psychic abilities and environmental puzzles that develop alongside the story. The game addresses anxiety, grief and other difficult subjects with humor, so its family suitability depends on the player’s age and comfort rather than its cartoon appearance.

Choose it when you want platforming attached to character writing and unusual level themes. Its controls and camera can feel less immediately tidy than Astro Bot’s highly controlled stages.

A Hat in Time — choose it for exploration and collectibles

A Hat in Time is a colorful 3D platformer with hub worlds, collectible badges and optional objectives. The stages encourage wandering and replay, so it rewards players who enjoy searching for secrets more than following a tightly choreographed path. Movement abilities alter how you approach each area, giving exploration a light metroidvania flavor without becoming a full action RPG.

It is a good match for discovery-focused players. The presentation is quirkier and the polish less uniform than Astro Bot, but the freedom to revisit areas and experiment with abilities is greater.

3D platformer comparison

Game Movement and camera Structure Difficulty and accessibility Best reason to choose it
Astro Bot Highly controlled 3D movement and camera Linear stages with collectibles and optional challenges Approachable baseline with harder side content Polished, family-friendly 3D platforming
Super Mario Bros. Wonder 2D movement with highly readable hazards World map and replayable stages with surprise events Broadly accessible; local multiplayer friendly Fast, inventive platforming in short sessions
Sackboy: A Big Adventure Accessible 3D movement Stage-based campaign designed for solo or co-op Gentle learning curve Cooperative play and a soft presentation
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Platforming combined with action combat Cinematic campaign with upgrades Adjustable combat challenge Spectacle, weapons and story between platforming sections
Psychonauts 2 Ability-based 3D traversal Story-led worlds with exploration and puzzles Moderate challenge; heavier themes Character-driven writing and imaginative levels
A Hat in Time Exploration-focused 3D movement Hub worlds, collectibles and optional objectives Variable; secrets can be demanding Free-form searching and replay

Card games and deckbuilders: alternatives to Balatro

Balatro is a defensible anchor for modern card-game recommendations. The Game Developers Choice Awards archive lists it as the 2025 Game of the Year winner for games released in 2024, as well as winner of Best Debut, Best Design and the Innovation Award. Its appeal comes from turning familiar poker hands into a highly replayable run system: rules are simple to read, but jokers, modifiers and chance create elaborate combinations.

Its alternatives differ mainly in how much of the experience is planned deck construction, how punishing a failed run feels and how much story surrounds the cards.

Slay the Spire — choose it for deliberate deck construction

Slay the Spire is the reference point for route-based roguelike deckbuilding. You choose a character, select cards and relics, then climb a branching map of fights, events and shops. Runs ask you to remove weak cards, manage resources and build a coherent engine rather than simply chase a high-scoring hand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it when you want more control and tactical planning than Balatro provides. Random encounters still matter, but decisions about archetype, energy and map routing are central. Runs are structured around combat turns, so it feels slower and more methodical.

Monster Train — choose it for layered battles and stronger synergies

Monster Train uses a vertical battlefield with several floors. You combine a primary and secondary clan, place units and cast spells, then upgrade them between battles. The multi-floor layout creates more variables than Balatro’s single-hand resolution and rewards players who enjoy assembling powerful combinations.

Pick it for a higher information load and more explicit unit management. It is less immediately readable than Balatro, but its build variety gives experienced deckbuilders substantial room to experiment.

Inscryption — choose it for atmosphere and surprises

Inscryption begins as a grim cabin card game and gradually expands into a story about the game itself. Sacrifice mechanics, deck manipulation and puzzle elements make each encounter feel distinct. The campaign has a stronger authored narrative than Balatro, so it is less focused on infinite score chasing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Inscryption when tone and discovery are as important as card strategy. Its horror imagery and unsettling themes make it a poor fit for players seeking Balatro’s light, arcade-like presentation.

Monster Train and Wildfrost — choose between power-building and survival pressure

Wildfrost offers compact, turn-based battles in which units have countdown timers and positional relationships. Planning a turn requires watching when allies and enemies will act, so the challenge is more about sequencing than probability-driven hand scoring. The art is cute, but the difficulty can be severe.

Choose Wildfrost for tight tactical puzzles and a demanding learning curve. Choose Monster Train when you prefer larger combinations and a more forgiving ability to scale a build during a run.

Vampire Survivors — choose it for the shortest, most accessible runs

Vampire Survivors is not a traditional deckbuilder, but it scratches the same “one more run” impulse. Movement is largely automatic while you select weapons and passive upgrades, producing dramatic screen-filling combinations. A run asks less of your hands and more of your choices between upgrade options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a strong alternative for players who enjoy Balatro’s escalating power but want real-time action and minimal rules overhead. It offers less control over individual turns and less satisfaction from constructing a card-by-card deck.

Card-game comparison

Game Core decisions Randomness Run feel Best reason to choose it
Balatro Joker combinations, hand scoring and shop choices High, with luck shaped by deck manipulation Fast, score-focused and highly replayable Immediate rules with explosive synergies
Slay the Spire Cards, relics, route planning and deck thinning Meaningful but managed through long-term choices Methodical combat climb Strategic deck construction
Monster Train Unit placement, clan pairing and upgrades Moderate, with many ways to shape a build Power-building across layered battles Complex combinations and battlefield planning
Inscryption Risky card sacrifices, puzzles and deck manipulation Supports a directed story experience Campaign-led with major surprises Atmosphere and narrative experimentation
Wildfrost Turn order, positioning and countdown management Can sharply change a difficult battle Compact but demanding tactical runs High-pressure sequencing
Vampire Survivors Upgrade choices and movement Build options vary each run Very accessible real-time sessions Simple controls and escalating power

Narrative role-playing games: alternatives to Metaphor: ReFantazio

Metaphor: ReFantazio is the narrative-RPG anchor in this group. GameDeveloper.com reported that it won Best Narrative, Art Direction and Best RPG at The Game Awards 2024. The Game Developers Choice Awards archive also lists it as a Best Narrative finalist. Those recognitions reflect a game built around a substantial story, a party that develops over time and a combat system that asks you to plan around enemy weaknesses.

Its closest alternatives differ in how much time they devote to social links, how freely you explore, and whether battles are turn-based, hybrid or fully tactical. All are substantial commitments; check your available play time before choosing a long campaign.

Persona 5 Royal — choose it for the richest social calendar

Persona 5 Royal is the natural choice when the part you loved was balancing dungeon expeditions with school life, confidants and daily time management. Its turn-based battles use elemental weaknesses and collectible Personas, while the calendar forces trade-offs between improving relationships, stats and combat readiness.

Choose it for a dense urban setting and a more intimate, character-first story. Its calendar pressure and long runtime can feel demanding if you prefer Metaphor’s political journey and more direct expedition structure.

Dragon Quest XI S — choose it for traditional adventure and a warmer tone

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age offers classic party-based turn-based combat, a large questing journey and a brighter fairy-tale tone. Characters are easier to read and the systems are less layered than Metaphor’s archetype approach, making it a comfortable entry point for players who want a long RPG without constant social scheduling.

Pick it for towns, exploration and a traditional hero’s journey. It is less experimental in presentation and less focused on political themes.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth — choose it for character drama and hybrid combat

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth combines a modern character drama with turn-based battles that allow movement around the arena. Positioning, improvised weapons and job changes give fights a more physical, comedic texture than Metaphor’s weakness-driven encounters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it when you want an adult ensemble cast, side activities and a contemporary setting. The story assumes familiarity with earlier Like a Dragon games more than Metaphor assumes knowledge of another series.

Octopath Traveler II — choose it for shorter, self-contained character arcs

Octopath Traveler II presents eight protagonists with individual stories that can be pursued in different orders. Its turn-based combat revolves around exposing weaknesses, saving boost points and breaking defenses. The structure is less centralized than Metaphor’s, so you can sample a character arc without committing to one continuous political narrative.

Pick it for pixel-art presentation, flexible exploration and party experimentation. The separate stories mean relationships may feel less tightly interwoven than Metaphor’s core cast.

Baldur’s Gate 3 — choose it for player-authored choices and tactical freedom

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a party RPG built around turn-based tactical combat, exploration and choices that can radically alter quests. You create a protagonist or use an origin character, combine classes and exploit terrain, objects and status effects. The result is less schedule-driven than Metaphor and more reactive to improvisation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it if you want freedom to solve problems in multiple ways and do not mind a slower, more systems-heavy campaign. Players seeking a tightly paced anime-inspired presentation may prefer Metaphor’s authored rhythm.

Narrative-RPG comparison

Action RPG and visually driven adventure: alternatives to Black Myth: Wukong and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

The Game Developers Choice Awards archive lists Black Myth: Wukong and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth among major finalists for 2024 releases. They represent different ends of action adventure: Black Myth emphasizes demanding real-time battles and mythic spectacle, while Final Fantasy VII Rebirth combines cinematic storytelling, party tactics and broad exploration. Use the feature you want to preserve rather than treating the two as interchangeable.

Elden Ring — choose it for exploration and build freedom

Elden Ring offers a vast interconnected world, optional bosses and a large range of weapons, spells and character builds. Combat is deliberate and punishes careless attacks, but the open map lets you leave a difficult encounter and return with a different approach. Compared with Black Myth: Wukong, it gives you more control over build identity and route; compared with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, it provides less directed cinematic storytelling.

Lies of P — choose it for a focused, demanding campaign

Lies of P is a linear action RPG with precise dodges, parries, weapon assembly and boss fights. Its levels are easier to navigate than an open-world game, so practice and repetition remain the main path forward. Choose it when the appeal of Black Myth is difficult melee combat rather than large-scale exploration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Devil May Cry 5 — choose it for expressive combo combat

Devil May Cry 5 is built around stylish real-time action. Multiple characters use distinct weapons and abilities, and the ranking system rewards variety, timing and aggression. It has less role-playing progression and less world exploration than either award anchor, but its combat ceiling is exceptionally high.

Horizon Forbidden West — choose it for cinematic open-world adventure

Horizon Forbidden West combines a cinematic story with a large world, quests, crafting and ranged combat against machines. It is a better alternative when you want exploration, scenery and a guided narrative rather than boss-focused melee difficulty. Its systems are broader and more gear-oriented, while Final Fantasy VII Rebirth places more emphasis on a party cast and real-time/command combat hybrid.

Monster Hunter: World — choose it for repeatable hunts and equipment mastery

Monster Hunter: World centers on preparing for a hunt, learning a monster’s behavior and crafting equipment from the resulting materials. Battles are slower and more deliberate than a character-action game, and the progression loop is designed for repeated encounters. It suits players who want co-op potential and long-term mastery rather than a one-time cinematic campaign.

Action-RPG comparison

Game Combat identity World structure Progression Best reason to choose it
Black Myth: Wukong Boss-focused real-time action Visually directed areas Abilities and equipment support combat specialization Mythic spectacle and demanding encounters
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Party-based real-time and command hybrid Broad regions with quests and activities Party abilities, equipment and materia-style customization Cinematic story with a large ensemble
Elden Ring Deliberate melee, ranged and magic builds Open world with optional routes Extensive build and equipment freedom Exploration and experimentation
Lies of P Precise parries, dodges and weapon assembly Focused, interconnected campaign areas Weapon and ability upgrades Concentrated challenge without an open world
Devil May Cry 5 Style-driven combo action Linear mission structure Moves and weapons expand expressive options High-skill combat and replayable missions
Horizon Forbidden West Ranged, melee and machine-part targeting Large cinematic open world Crafting, skills and gear upgrades Scenery, quests and accessible exploration
Monster Hunter: World Deliberate weapon-specific hunting Large hunt zones rather than a narrative open world Crafted equipment and repeated mastery Long-term progression and cooperative hunts

Platform, edition and availability checks

Award records identify winners and finalists; they do not provide live retailer inventory or guarantee that every edition is sold in your country. Before purchasing, confirm:

  1. Platform: match the game’s current listing to your console or PC. Astro Bot is a PS5 title, while the other recommendations may have different console, handheld or PC versions.
  2. Edition: check whether a listing is the base game, a complete edition, a bundle or downloadable content. Physical and digital editions can have different contents.
  3. Region and language: packaging, online features and supported languages can vary by market.
  4. Performance requirements: PC versions may require a modern graphics card, sufficient memory and current drivers. Use the publisher’s requirements for the exact edition rather than a generic franchise estimate.
  5. Multiplayer needs: local co-op, online co-op and solo-only modes are different; verify whether a subscription or separate account is required.
  6. Current stock and price: award status does not keep a product in print. Check the live store page immediately before ordering.

A quick decision guide

  • You want the closest family-friendly 3D platforming: start with Sackboy: A Big Adventure; choose A Hat in Time if exploration matters more than polish.
  • You want inventive platforming but own a different console: try Super Mario Bros. Wonder for 2D precision.
  • You want Balatro’s replayable combinations with more planning: choose Slay the Spire or Monster Train.
  • You want Balatro’s short-session energy with almost no rules overhead: choose Vampire Survivors.
  • You want Metaphor’s social and calendar pressure: choose Persona 5 Royal.
  • You want a long RPG with traditional systems: choose Dragon Quest XI S; choose Baldur’s Gate 3 for maximum player choice.
  • You want Black Myth’s combat challenge: choose Lies of P for a focused campaign or Elden Ring for build freedom.
  • You want Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s cinematic exploration: choose Horizon Forbidden West; choose Monster Hunter: World if repeatable hunts and equipment mastery matter more than story.
