The best alternative depends on what you are optimizing: choose a hyperscaler’s managed machine-learning platform for enterprise integration and compliance, a flexible GPU or serverless platform for bursty workloads, a managed model-serving layer for the fastest path to production, Kubernetes with llm-d for portability, or a GPU marketplace when you need capacity from several providers. No provider is universally cheapest; compare the complete cost and operating work for your model, traffic, region and reliability target.
What a neocloud does—and why alternatives matter
Microsoft defines a neocloud as “a cloud provider built specifically for GPU compute and AI workloads rather than general-purpose enterprise applications.” Neoclouds typically emphasize deep accelerator inventory, bare-metal access, high-speed interconnects and predictable GPU-hour pricing. Hyperscalers instead combine accelerators with managed machine-learning services, identity, storage, networking, compliance programs and many global regions.
That distinction is useful, but a GPU-hour price is not a deployment cost. A low rate can be outweighed by engineering time for packaging, autoscaling, monitoring, patching, quota management, data transfer and incident response. A managed endpoint can cost more per accelerator hour while eliminating much of that work. The right comparison is total cost of ownership and operational burden for the service you must run.

That is a secondary quotation rather than an independently verified primary report, but it illustrates why product names, capacity and pricing are changing rapidly.

1. Hyperscaler managed machine-learning platforms
AWS SageMaker, Google Vertex AI and Azure Machine Learning are the most practical neocloud alternatives when your model is part of a larger enterprise system. They connect inference to the cloud’s identity controls, object storage, data warehouses, private networking, audit tooling and regional compliance options.
AWS SageMaker
SageMaker supports deployment patterns such as shadow deployments, multi-model endpoints, multi-container endpoints and batch transform. These features are useful when you need to compare a candidate model against live traffic, consolidate several smaller models or process jobs that do not require a continuously running endpoint.
Google Vertex AI
Vertex AI offers canary traffic splitting for gradual releases, GPU and TPU support, and drift monitoring. It is a strong fit when your data and analytics already run in Google’s cloud and you want deployment, evaluation and monitoring in one control plane.
Azure Machine Learning
Azure Machine Learning provides blue/green deployment, Prompt Flow and integration with Azure OpenAI and Microsoft Entra identity. Those integrations can reduce the work of connecting model serving to an organization’s existing access policies and application estate.
When this lane wins
- Your security team requires established identity, private networking, audit and compliance controls.
- Data already resides in the same cloud, making egress and pipeline integration more important than the lowest advertised GPU rate.
- You need controlled releases, batch jobs, monitoring and support contracts rather than only a virtual machine.
- You operate in several regions or need a documented disaster-recovery design.
The trade-off is platform coupling. Deployment specifications, monitoring APIs and managed-model features differ between clouds, so portability requires deliberate abstraction and testing.
2. Flexible GPU and serverless platforms
Flexible GPU services are closer to the hardware than a fully managed endpoint. They suit research, fine-tuning, custom inference servers and workloads whose demand changes sharply. Some provide a conventional GPU instance; others run a container or Python function only when work arrives.

RunPod
RunPod is positioned for community and serverless GPU capacity. Its documented multi-node option supports clusters of up to 64 H100 GPUs, and shared network volumes can keep model artifacts available across workers. This is useful for distributed jobs or experiments that need more than one accelerator but do not justify owning a permanent cluster.
Modal
Modal provides Python-native serverless GPU workloads with scale-to-zero, burst capacity and per-second billing. Scale-to-zero can avoid paying for idle endpoints, while burst capacity helps when a queue suddenly grows. Cold-start time and model-loading behavior still need to be measured for latency-sensitive applications.
OVHcloud AI Deploy
OVHcloud AI Deploy targets containerized models on European sovereign infrastructure. It is worth considering when the deployment must remain in a particular European jurisdiction or when sovereignty requirements are more important than access to every accelerator type.
DigitalOcean AI inference
DigitalOcean combines GPU infrastructure with an inference stack that includes model routing, bring-your-own-model support and one OpenAI-compatible key for more than 70 models. That can simplify application integration when developers want a common API while retaining a choice of models behind it.

Operational trade-offs
These services give you more control than a managed endpoint, but control transfers responsibility to you. You must build or select the container image, serving engine, health checks, autoscaling policy, logs, metrics, tracing, patch process and recovery procedure. A raw GPU rate is attractive only if your team can operate the resulting system.
3. Managed model-serving layers
A managed serving layer sits between a raw GPU rental and a hyperscaler’s broad machine-learning platform. It is designed to get an open-weight model into production without requiring you to assemble every scheduler, inference engine and capacity-management component.
Hugging Face Inference Endpoints
Inference Endpoints is intended for direct deployment of models from the Hub, with security profiles and automatic pairing with serving engines such as vLLM or SGLang. Confirm the currently supported model formats, regions and accelerator types before committing to a production design.

Do not confuse current Inference Endpoints availability with the earlier HUGS deployment-container offer. A September 2025 update stated that HUGS model-deployment containers were no longer offered and directed users to Dell Enterprise Hub and the Azure AI Foundry collection. Product status has changed, so verify the endpoint or enterprise product you would actually use.

Together AI
Together AI is listed for fine-tuning and serving open models. It can fit a team that wants training and inference workflows from one specialist service rather than managing separate GPU clusters.
Fireworks AI
Fireworks AI focuses on fast serving for open-weight models. It is a candidate when latency and throughput matter more than controlling every layer of the serving stack.
Baseten
Baseten is positioned for compliance-focused open-weight model serving, with self-hosted or hybrid options. Those options can help organizations keep some workloads in their own environment while using a managed layer where policy permits.
Questions to ask before selecting a serving layer
- Can you deploy your exact model revision, tokenizer and custom code?
- Which quantization formats, context lengths, batching modes and accelerators are supported?
- Are streaming responses, tool calls, structured output and an OpenAI-compatible API available?
- How are model weights, prompts, logs and telemetry isolated and retained?
- Can you export the container, configuration or weights if you leave?
4. Portable Kubernetes inference with llm-d
CNCF accepted llm-d as a Sandbox project on March 24, 2026. It treats distributed inference as a first-class cloud-native workload and was launched with the goal of supporting “any model, any accelerator, any cloud.” Its documented capabilities include inference-aware traffic management, Kubernetes LeaderWorkerSet orchestration, prefill/decode disaggregation and hierarchical key-value-cache offload.

You still need to rent or buy accelerators and operate Kubernetes. The benefit is a common orchestration model that can move between clouds or on-premises environments when the underlying drivers and devices are available.
When llm-d is justified
- You have a platform team capable of operating Kubernetes, GPU scheduling and observability.
- Large models require distributed serving, separate prefill and decode stages or advanced KV-cache management.
- Portability is a business requirement, not merely a future preference.
- You can standardize on open interfaces and accept the testing required for each accelerator and cloud.
For a small team serving one model, this stack may create more operational work than it removes. For a multi-cloud platform team, it can reduce dependence on a provider-specific endpoint API.

5. GPU marketplace access
NVIDIA announced DGX Cloud Lepton on May 18, 2025. The marketplace connects developers with tens of thousands of GPUs from partners including CoreWeave, Crusoe, Firmus, Foxconn, GMI Cloud, Lambda, Nebius, Nscale, SoftBank and Yotta. NVIDIA says developers can request capacity in specific regions for on-demand or long-term use and deploy across multi-cloud or hybrid environments.
This model is useful when procurement wants one access layer while engineering needs several GPU suppliers, or when a workload has regional and sovereignty constraints. Marketplace participation, capacity and terms change, so verify that the required region and accelerator are available before designing around them.

DigitalOcean’s published comparison gives the following approximate H100 starting snapshots. The table mixes GPU-hour, token, per-second and serverless billing; these are directional figures, not an apples-to-apples total-cost benchmark.
| Provider or service | Approximate starting snapshot | Billing and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| RunPod | $2.69 per GPU-hour | Approximate H100 starting figure; included services and utilization vary |
| Modal | $3.95 per GPU-hour | Approximate H100 starting figure; serverless and per-second behavior affect totals |
| OVHcloud AI Deploy | $2.99 per GPU-hour | Approximate H100 starting figure for a containerized deployment |
| Hugging Face Inference Endpoints | $4.50 per GPU-hour | Approximate H100 starting figure; managed serving features are part of the comparison |
| AWS SageMaker | $2.58 per GPU-hour | Approximate H100 starting figure; managed-service and surrounding cloud charges are separate considerations |
| Google Vertex AI | $3.69 per GPU-hour | Approximate H100 starting figure; platform and related infrastructure costs vary |
| Azure Machine Learning | $1.40 per GPU-hour | Approximate H100 starting figure; the comparison’s billing basis and included services are not identical to every row |
These figures do not establish a universal winner. A realistic estimate adds storage, snapshots, networking and egress, orchestration, support, idle time, replicas for high availability and the engineering cost of operating the endpoint. Serverless billing can be cheaper for sporadic traffic; a reserved or continuously utilized GPU can be cheaper for a steady workload.
How to compare alternatives for your model
- Write the workload envelope. Record model size, precision or quantization, context length, expected requests per second, token rates, concurrency, streaming requirement and maximum acceptable latency.
- Define the reliability target. Specify availability, recovery time, deployment rollback, regional failover and whether a cold start is acceptable.
- List data and policy constraints. Identify allowed regions, data residency, encryption, retention, private networking, identity integration and audit requirements.
- Calculate total monthly cost. Include accelerator time, replicas, storage, checkpoints, network transfer, control-plane services, observability, support and engineering operations.
- Run an identical workload test. Use the same model revision, tokenizer, prompt mix, context lengths, concurrency and output limits. Measure time to first token, tokens per second, tail latency, error rate and startup time.
- Test failure and scaling paths. Force a worker restart, exhaust quota, increase traffic and deploy a new model revision. Record what is automatic and what requires an operator.
- Test exit portability. Export weights, tokenizer, container, configuration and prompts. Recreate the service on a second provider or local cluster before calling the design portable.
Reducing vendor lock-in without giving up managed services
Portability is a set of engineering decisions, not a claim on a product page. Keep your application behind an internal inference interface and use an OpenAI-compatible contract where practical. Store model artifacts and tokenizer files in a location you control, pin exact revisions, and keep prompts and evaluation data outside provider-specific dashboards.
Package custom preprocessing and postprocessing in containers. Emit provider-neutral metrics such as request latency, time to first token, generated tokens, queue time, GPU utilization, cache hit rate and error class. Maintain infrastructure definitions in version control and document the minimum GPU memory, driver and runtime versions.
Kubernetes can provide a common deployment substrate, while llm-d adds inference-aware scheduling and distributed-serving capabilities. Neither removes differences in drivers, accelerator memory, networking and quotas. Portability must therefore be validated with real model loads on each target.

Common failure modes and fixes
The model fits on paper but fails at runtime
Weights may fit while the KV cache, tokenizer, framework overhead and batching do not. Reduce concurrency or context length, use an appropriate quantization, select a larger-memory accelerator, or configure cache offload. Measure peak memory during the target traffic pattern.
The hourly rate is low but the invoice is high
Check idle replicas, attached volumes, snapshots, egress, load balancers, logging and control-plane charges. For intermittent traffic, compare scale-to-zero or per-second billing. For steady traffic, compare committed capacity and utilization rather than the on-demand headline rate.
Latency is acceptable in a single-user test but poor in production
Single-request tests hide queueing, batching and network effects. Re-run with production concurrency, realistic prompt and output lengths, streaming enabled if applicable, and the required geographic distance between users, data and GPUs.
A deployment cannot be moved to another provider
Identify whether the dependency is the model format, a proprietary API, a custom scheduler, a private networking design or an unexportable monitoring configuration. Add a containerized serving path and an internal API, then rehearse migration with a small representative model before the dependency becomes critical.
Capacity is unavailable when the project is ready
Check quota lead times and regional inventory early. Keep a tested secondary region or provider, and avoid assuming that a marketplace listing guarantees immediate access to a particular accelerator.
Recommendations by workload
| Workload | Shortlist | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise application already standardized on one cloud | That cloud’s managed ML platform | Identity, storage, networking, compliance and deployment controls are already integrated |
| Prototype, evaluation or occasional batch job | Modal, RunPod or a managed serving layer | Scale-to-zero, burst capacity or prebuilt serving can minimize idle operations |
| Open-weight model with a small platform team | Inference Endpoints, Together AI, Fireworks AI or Baseten | Less cluster assembly while retaining access to open models |
| European sovereignty requirement | OVHcloud AI Deploy or a compliant regional hyperscaler deployment | Region and data-residency controls take priority over a global lowest price |
| Multi-cloud distributed inference | Kubernetes with llm-d, potentially combined with a GPU marketplace |
Open orchestration and multiple capacity sources reduce dependence on one endpoint API |
| Procurement needs many GPU suppliers through one route | NVIDIA DGX Cloud Lepton | Marketplace access can simplify regional and multi-provider capacity requests |
What to verify before signing up
- Current accelerator model, memory, region and quota—not only a marketing list.
- Whether the quoted price is on-demand, reserved, promotional, serverless, per-second, token-based or a starting estimate.
- Data retention, model-weight handling, prompt logging and support escalation.
- Maximum context length, batching, streaming, tool-call and structured-output behavior for your exact model.
- Export options for weights, containers, configuration, logs and evaluation results.
- Recovery behavior after a host, zone, quota or provider outage.
- Any product-status changes since the provider’s last documentation update.
Pricing, GPU availability, quotas, regions and marketplace participation are volatile. Recheck them immediately before purchase and repeat the workload test after material hardware or software changes. No published snapshot substitutes for a benchmark using your model, traffic and network path.
