For most short European holidays, check rail before you check flights. High-speed, conventional and night trains can link city centres without airport transfers; coaches fill gaps or lower the fare; ferries are indispensable for islands and sea crossings; and shared cars, cycling or walking can be better when the group, geography and luggage make them practical. The right choice is the one that works door to door after you count every transfer, change, ticket, cabin, luggage rule and overnight stay.
Why replace a short flight?
Short flights often hide time and environmental costs. A flight may take 60–90 minutes in the air but require a distant airport transfer, an early arrival, security queues, baggage collection and another trip into town. A direct train can therefore be competitive on total journey time even when its timetable shows more hours.
There is also a climate reason to compare modes. The European Commission reported in 2025 that road transport accounts for more than 70% of transport emissions in Europe. Its 2024 overview describes transport as responsible for almost a quarter of Europe’s greenhouse-gas emissions, with more than 70% of EU transport emissions attributed to road transport, and says transport emissions must fall by 90% by 2050. Those figures describe the transport system as a whole, not the footprint of one itinerary, but they explain why mode choice matters.

The European Environment Agency’s EU-27 comparison, covering 2014–2018, found rail to be the most efficient motorised passenger mode on average. Waterborne passenger transport ranked second in the relevant category, while buses and coaches were the strongest road option overall. The result is a mode-level benchmark, not a live carbon calculator: occupancy, vehicle type, electricity mix, route length and the way a service is operated can change the result for a particular trip.

Use a door-to-door test, not an air-time test
Before comparing fares, write down the time and conditions you actually need. Include the journey from home to the departure point, check-in or boarding buffer, every connection, the final transfer to accommodation and any overnight stay. Then compare the complete price rather than the headline ticket.
The six questions that decide the best mode
- Total elapsed time: Count transfers and required arrival buffers, not just the moving time shown in a search result.
- Connection quality: A direct service is simpler than two fast services with a short, unprotected change. Check whether one ticket covers the whole itinerary and what happens after a missed connection.
- Real cost: Add seat reservations, luggage or bicycle fees, port and station transfers, cabin supplements and a hotel night. Subtract a hotel night only when the overnight service genuinely replaces it.
- Access and comfort: Check step-free boarding, lifts, accessible toilets, seating, berth privacy, food and the distance between platforms or terminals.
- Reliability and disruption: Review the operator’s current timetable and notices immediately before departure. Engineering works, strikes, weather and border procedures can change a route.
- Holiday fit: A ferry deck, a cycle route or a sleeper berth may be part of the experience. A long coach journey may be acceptable for a low-cost city break but not for a family with mobility needs.
Rail: the first alternative to investigate
The European Commission’s practical advice is direct: “Consider taking the train if you are only travelling a few hundred kilometres or less.” Rail is particularly persuasive when a direct high-speed service reaches the city centre or when a night train turns transport into accommodation.
High-speed rail
High-speed trains are strongest on busy corridors between large cities. They usually arrive at central stations, avoid airport transfers and offer a predictable working environment with more space than an aircraft cabin. Compare the entire itinerary, however: a cheap connection that requires a cross-city station transfer can erase the advantage of a direct service.

Keep all legs on one booking when possible. If separate tickets are unavoidable, leave a substantial buffer and confirm who is responsible for a missed connection.
Conventional rail
Slower regional and intercity trains can reach smaller destinations that high-speed lines bypass. They are useful for scenic routes, short border crossings and the final leg from a major city. Their weakness is frequency: missing the last connection may add many hours, so inspect the first and last departures as carefully as the headline journey.
Cross-border rail is improving. EU initiatives on interoperability, long-distance services and Europe-wide booking are intended to make international journeys easier, but the quality of connections and the ability to buy one through-ticket remain route-specific. Treat every published timetable as current only for the date shown and recheck it before departure.

Night trains
A sleeper or couchette can replace a daytime journey and potentially one hotel night. Compare the arrival time with accommodation check-in, the price of a private compartment versus a shared couchette, shower and toilet arrangements, and the risk that a late arrival breaks a morning connection. A night train is not automatically cheaper: a basic seat may be poor value if it leaves you needing a hotel or a recovery day.

When rail is not the best answer
- A route may require several changes where a coach is direct.
- A remote airport can be closer to the final resort than the nearest practical station.
- Peak-period rail fares can exceed a flexible coach or a shared-car cost.
- Large equipment, such as several bicycles, may require reservations that are unavailable on one leg.
These are reasons to compare alternatives, not reasons to skip the rail search.
Coach and bus travel
Coaches are the strongest road option in the EEA’s mode comparison and often cover city pairs that lack a direct train. They can be the practical choice when rail is sold out, expensive or interrupted. Long-distance coaches generally depart from central bus stations, but some use peripheral stops, so check the exact location and the local transport needed to reach it.
What to compare before booking
- Duration and stops: A nominally direct service may make numerous intermediate stops or cross a congested border.
- Luggage allowance: Confirm the number, size and weight of included bags; sports equipment often has separate rules.
- Facilities: Check toilet availability, power sockets, Wi-Fi claims and seat-reservation options rather than assuming every vehicle has them.
- Change and cancellation terms: A cheap restricted ticket may be unusable after a missed local connection.
- Accessibility: Ask whether a lift-equipped coach and assistance must be reserved in advance.
Occupancy and operating conditions affect emissions, just as they affect comfort. A full coach can perform very differently from a lightly loaded vehicle, so the EEA finding should be read as an average rather than a promise for one departure.
Ferries and rail–ferry combinations
For islands and sea crossings, a ferry is not an optional greener substitute; it is often the only practical surface route. It can also create a pleasant holiday rhythm when the sailing is timed as part of the trip. Compare the sailing with the whole alternative, including the transfer to the port and the onward journey from the arrival terminal.

Choose the right sailing
- Frequency: Infrequent sailings make a missed train or coach more consequential.
- Accommodation: A seat, reclining chair, shared cabin and private cabin have very different prices and sleep quality.
- Vehicle carriage: Taking a car may unlock remote destinations but adds booking, fuel, toll, parking and driving costs.
- Sea conditions: Seasickness risk, weather exposure and the ability to remain indoors matter for children and passengers with medical needs.
- Port access: Some terminals are far from the city and require a bus, taxi or shuttle that must be booked separately.
Do not treat every vessel as equivalent. Passenger ferries designed to carry vehicles (often called RoPax) have a different operating profile from cruise ships. The EEA’s waterborne category is therefore useful for comparison but cannot supply one universal emissions figure for every ferry or cruise itinerary.
Building a rail–ferry itinerary
Search the rail leg, port transfer and sailing as one plan where a through-ticket exists. If you must buy separate tickets, allow time for a delayed train, terminal check-in and walking between the station and berth. Print or save boarding details offline because port connectivity can be unreliable. On the return journey, allow the same margin in reverse; a missed sailing can be harder to recover than a missed train.
Shared cars, car hire and electric vehicles
A shared car can beat public transport for a group travelling to a rural destination with weak rail and bus links. Divide the entire cost among occupants and include fuel or charging, tolls, parking, ferry carriage, insurance and the empty return journey. A vehicle carrying four people may compare well with several individual tickets; a single-occupant fossil-fuel car can perform poorly and should not be assumed greener than a flight.
Questions for a car-based holiday
- How many people and how much luggage will travel in both directions?
- Can every driver legally drive in each country, and are low-emission zones or toll permits required?
- Where are reliable charging points on the route, and what happens if one is occupied or out of service?
- What is the parking cost at the destination, and can the car remain unused once you arrive?
- Would taking a train to a regional hub and hiring a car locally reduce distance and cost?
An electric car removes tailpipe emissions but not congestion, tyre wear, parking or the energy used to manufacture and charge it. Evaluate the actual occupancy and route rather than applying a blanket label to “car.”
Walking and cycling as the holiday itself
Walking and cycling are near-zero operational-emission options when they replace motorised travel, but they require a different itinerary. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s 2024 guidance explicitly supports integrating walking, cycling and multimodal information into tourism packages.
Plan the practical details
- Route and terrain: Check gradients, surface, traffic, weather exposure and daylight for every day.
- Luggage: Arrange luggage transfer, use panniers or reduce the load; a route is not practical if bags make it unsafe.
- Bike carriage: Reserve spaces on trains and ferries where required, and confirm whether a bike must be boxed.
- Fallback transport: Identify local buses or trains for illness, storms or mechanical problems.
- Accommodation: Verify secure bike storage, drying space and late check-in after a delayed arrival.
Multimodal travel can combine a train, a local bus and several days on foot or by bicycle. That arrangement often avoids the hardest part of a long-distance ride while keeping the active element central to the holiday.

A reliable booking workflow
- Set the boundary: Write the destination, dates, travellers, luggage, accessibility needs and maximum acceptable door-to-door time.
- Search rail first: Check high-speed, conventional and night services, plus nearby departure and arrival stations.
- Add surface combinations: Search coach routes and rail–ferry itineraries where rail is incomplete, expensive or impractical.
- Price the whole journey: Include tickets, reservations, luggage, port or station transfers, meals, cabin supplements and any hotel night saved.
- Test resilience: Look at the number of changes, connection buffers, the last service of the day, disruption notices and the rules for missed connections.
- Check access: Confirm step-free routes, assistance booking, toilet access, bicycle rules, child provisions and boarding arrangements.
- Verify immediately before travel: Recheck schedules, border requirements, identity documents, operator notices and terminal changes on the day before departure.
Border crossings and passenger rights
International surface travel can involve more than a ticket. Check the entry requirements for every country, the validity of travel documents, customs limits for food or equipment and any temporary border controls. The fact that a route is normally open does not guarantee that a particular sailing, train or coach is operating on your date.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing a flight with only the train’s moving time
Use a door-to-door spreadsheet or note. Add airport or station transfers, arrival buffers, security, baggage collection and the final trip to accommodation for every mode.
Assuming the cheapest displayed fare is flexible
Open the fare conditions. A restricted ticket may cost more after one date change, seat reservation or extra bag than a flexible alternative.
Leaving the final connection until later
Check the first and last local services, especially after a night train or ferry. A central long-distance arrival does not help if the connecting bus has stopped for the day.

Build a generous buffer, identify a later departure and keep enough money for a replacement ticket. Through-ticket protection is valuable when available.

Ignoring luggage and equipment rules
Measure bags, reserve bicycles and confirm sports-equipment policies before paying. Porters, taxis and last-minute storage can erase a low headline fare.
How to make a fair environmental comparison
Use the EEA’s 2014–2018 EU-27 comparison to understand broad mode differences, not to claim an exact footprint for your itinerary. Ask what kind of train, coach or ferry is operating, how full it is, how far it travels and whether the calculation includes access journeys. A train with several empty legs and a long taxi transfer is not identical to a full direct service from a central station.
For a personal comparison, record the actual distance and occupancy for each leg, then use a reputable, clearly documented calculator if you need a numerical estimate. Treat any result as an estimate with assumptions, not a measurement of the individual passenger’s exact emissions.

Choosing by holiday type
City break
Start with direct high-speed rail. Compare the station-to-hotel walk with the airport transfer, and consider a night train if it preserves a full day at the destination.
Island escape
Build around the ferry timetable. A rail or coach to the port may be simpler than driving, while a car ferry can be justified for a group carrying equipment to a remote island.
Family trip with substantial luggage
Prioritise direct services, reserved seats, accessible toilets and generous luggage rules. A slightly higher fare can be worthwhile if it removes a risky connection.
Active holiday
Use rail or coach for the long approach, then walk or cycle locally. Reserve bike spaces, arrange luggage transfer and keep a weather-day fallback.
Remote rural stay
Compare a train to a regional hub plus local hire car with a fully car-based journey. Include parking and the cost of leaving the vehicle unused.
Bottom line
Make rail your first search for a short-haul European holiday, then test coaches, ferries, shared cars and active travel against the same door-to-door checklist. The best alternative is not the mode with the shortest advertised journey or the lowest headline fare; it is the complete itinerary that meets your time, access, comfort, reliability and budget requirements without treating an average emissions statistic as a guarantee for one particular trip.
